RESUMO

Four new natural chemical entities, including 2-hydroxy-α-truxillic acid (2), (3R,4S)-2,2-dimethyl-3-hydroxy-4-(1-angeloyloxy)-6-acetyl-7-methoxychromane (3), N-tricosanoyltyramine (4), and grandifolamide (5), were isolated along with 11 known compounds (1, 6-15) from the aerial parts of Ageratina grandifolia. The chemical structures were elucidated using chemical derivatization and HR-MS, NMR, and DFT-calculated chemical shifts, combined with DP4+ statistical analysis. It was found that 2 decomposed into its biogenetic precursor, o-coumaric acid, upon standing at room temperature for a few weeks. 3,5-Diprenyl-4-hydroxyacetophenone (8), O-methylencecalinol (10), encecalin (11), and encecalinol (12) bound to calmodulin (CaM) with higher affinity than chlorpromazine, a well-known CaM inhibitor. Molecular dynamics studies revealed that the complexes of these compounds with CaM remained stable during the simulation. Altogether these results revealed the therapeutic and research tool potential of compounds 8, 10, 11, and 12.

Dihydrolevoglucosenone (DLG or Cyrene™) solvent is a green dipolar solvent produced from cellulose waste. Different studies have demonstrated that it can successfully replace dipolar solvents, such as N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMA) and N-methylpyrrolidinone (NMP), in a variety of chemical reactions. In this paper, the first application of DLG in organic electrosynthesis is described, with results of its use in the electrochemical reduction of benzophenone derivatives (ca. E = -1.75 V vs. Ag/AgCl), as a greener alternative to other dipolar solvents with environmental concerns. Conductivity measurements show that the solvent presents conductivity and viscosity limitations that can be overcome by using EtOH as a cosolvent. The DLG/EtOH mixture resulted in a convenient solvent to carry out galvanostatic electroreductions of starting materials that exhibit high potential value. Furthermore, the reaction pathway (1e- or 2e-) was found to be dependent on the supporting electrolyte used; TBABF4 favored 2e- reduction to the corresponding alcohol (52-85%), whereas LiClO4 promoted C-C pinacolic coupling (47-70%).

Neurotuberculosis (neuroTB) is a devastating disease, and is difficult to diagnose. The aim of this study was to analyze the clinical and imaging characteristics, and outcomes of a retrospective cohort (2000-2022) of hospitalized patients diagnosed with intraspinal and intracranial neuroTB. This work was designed through clinical, laboratory and imaging findings. Variables included: demographic data, history of tuberculosis, neurological complications, comorbidities and outcomes. Morbi-mortality risk factors were identified by univariate analysis. The cohort included: 103 patients with intraspinal and 82 with intracranial neuroTB. During the study period, in-hospital mortality of 3% for intraspinal and 29.6% for intracranial neuroTB was estimated. Motor deficit was found in all patients with intraspinal neuroTB. Risk factors for the unfavorable outcome of patients with intraspinal neuroTB were: age ≥ 40 years, diabetes mellitus (DM), diagnostic delay, kyphosis and spondylodiscitis ≥ 3 levels of involvement. Among the patients with intracranial neuroTB, 79/82 (96.3%) had meningitis and 22 patients had HIV infection (10 of them died). Risk factors for mortality from intracranial neuroTB were: HIV infection, hydrocephalus, stroke, lymphopenia and disseminated and gastrointestinal TB. Patients with intraspinal neuroTB had a significant number of destroyed vertebrae that determined their neurological deficit status. The mortality burden in intracranial neuroTB was conditioned by HIV infection and renal transplantation patients.

BACKGROUND: Ageratina is an American genus of the tribe Eupatorieae (Asteraceae), comprising about 320 species. In Mexico, some species of this genus are highly valued for their medicinal properties, particularly A. pichinchensis, A. petiolaris, and A. grandifolia. Furthermore, herbal preparations of A. pichinchensis are available for treating several mycoses. AIMS AND OBJECTIVE: The present review is aimed to summarize the chemical and pharmacological properties of 37 species of the Ageratina genus up to April, 2022. METHODS: Data were recorded using online scientific databases, including Scopus, PubMed, Google Scholar, Taylor and Francis Imprints, National Center for Biotechnology Information, Science Direct, JSTOR, and SciFinder. The information was gathered from research articles, relevant books on herbal medicinal plants and the history of medicinal plants from Mexico, theses, reports, and web pages. RESULTS: The specialized metabolites present in the Ageratina genus belong to different chemical classes, including flavonoids, benzyl benzoates, benzofurans, chromenes, and terpenoids. The chromenes, benzofurans, and benzyl benzoates are the metabolites most widespread in the genus. So far, the species more thoroughly investigated is A. adenophora. Ageratina has received little attention from the pharmacological point of view. The studies are limited to 10 species. Biological studies have been conducted on extracts and/or compounds isolated from plants collected mainly from China and Mexico. The results revealed that the extracts and metabolites possess several biological activities, including antiviral, antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antinociceptive, antifeedant, larvicidal, acaricidal, antidiabetic, antiprotozoal, and wound-healing properties. In the case of A. pichinchensis, A. petiolaris, and A. grandifolia, the pharmacological studies provided evidence for their use for treating gastrointestinal complaints and diabetes. Furthermore, herbal preparations of A. pichinchensis are now widely used for alleviating onychomycosis. A. adenophora, is the most investigated species, chemically and biologically; however, some hepatotoxicity effect has been recorded. CONCLUSION: This review recapitulates information on the Ageratina genus, highlighting the phytochemistry and biological activities of the species investigated. It is important to point out that the pharmacological potential of this large genus remains largely unexplored.

The aim of this study was to study and model the bioleaching of abandoned mine tailings at different pulp densities 1-20% w/v by using an autochthonous mesophilic microbial culture. Because of the importance of the ferrous-iron oxidation as sub-process on the bioleaching of sulphide mineral ores, the ferrous-iron oxidation process by the autochthonous microbial culture was studied at different ferrous-iron concentrations. A mathematical model fitted to the experimental results and the main kinetic and stoichiometric parameters were determined, being the most relevant the maximum ferrous-iron oxidation rate 5.1 (mmol Fe2+/mmol C·h) and the biomass yield, 0.01 mmol C/mmol Fe2+, values very similar to that of mixed cultured dominated by Leptospirillum strains. This autochthonous culture was used in the bioleaching experiment carried out at different pulp densities, obtaining a maximum metal recovery in the tests carried out at 1% w/v, recovering a 90% of Cd, 60% of Zn, 30% of Cu, 25% Fe and 6% of Pb. Finally, the different leaching mechanisms were modelled by using the pyrite as ore model obtaining a bioleaching rate of 0.316 mmol Fe2+/(L·h) for the direct mechanisms and a bioleaching rate for the indirect and cooperative leaching mechanisms of 0.055 Fe2+/(L·h).

Regional species assemblages have been shaped by colonization, speciation and extinction over millions of years. Humans have altered biogeography by introducing species to new ranges. However, an analysis of how strongly naturalized plant species (i.e. alien plants that have established self-sustaining populations) affect the taxonomic and phylogenetic uniqueness of regional floras globally is still missing. Here, we present such an analysis with data from native and naturalized alien floras in 658 regions around the world. We find strong taxonomic and phylogenetic floristic homogenization overall, and that the natural decline in floristic similarity with increasing geographic distance is weakened by naturalized species. Floristic homogenization increases with climatic similarity, which emphasizes the importance of climate matching in plant naturalization. Moreover, floristic homogenization is greater between regions with current or past administrative relationships, indicating that being part of the same country as well as historical colonial ties facilitate floristic exchange, most likely due to more intensive trade and transport between such regions. Our findings show that naturalization of alien plants threatens taxonomic and phylogenetic uniqueness of regional floras globally. Unless more effective biosecurity measures are implemented, it is likely that with ongoing globalization, even the most distant regions will lose their floristic uniqueness.

Human akna encodes an AT-hook transcription factor whose expression participates in various cellular processes. We conducted a scoping review on the literature regarding the functional role of AKNA according to the evidence found in human and in vivo and in vitro models, stringently following the "PRISMA-ScR" statement recommendations. METHODS: We undertook an independent PubMed literature search using the following search terms, AKNA OR AKNA ADJ gene OR AKNA protein, human OR AKNA ADJ functions. Observational and experimental articles were considered. The selected studies were categorized using a pre-determined data extraction form. A narrative summary of the evidence was produced. RESULTS: AKNA modulates the expression of CD40 and CD40L genes in immune system cells. It is a negative regulator of inflammatory processes as evidenced by knockout mouse models and observational studies for several autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. Furthermore, AKNA contributes to the de-regulation of the immune system in cancer, and it has been proposed as a susceptibility genetic factor and biomarker in CC, GC, and HNSCC. Finally, AKNA regulates neurogenesis by destabilizing the microtubules dynamics. CONCLUSION: Our results provide evidence for the role of AKNA in various cellular processes, including immune response, inflammation, development, cancer, autoimmunity, and neurogenesis.

Regionalization through the analysis of species groups offers important advantages in conservation biology, compared to the single taxon approach in areas of high species richness. We use a systematic framework for biogeographic regionalization at a regional scale based on species turnover and environmental drivers (climate variables and soil properties) mainly of herbaceous plant species richness. To identify phytogeographic regions in the Balsas Depression (BD), we use Asteraceae species, a family widely distributed in Seasonally Dry Tropical Forest (SDTF) and the most diverse of the vascular plants in Mexico. Occurrence records of 571 species were used to apply a quantitative analysis based on the species turnover, the rate of changes in their composition between sites (ß-Simpson index) and the analysis of the identified environmental drivers. Also, the environmental predictors that influence species richness in the SDTF were determined with a redundancy analysis. We identified and named two phytogeographic districts within the SDTF of the BD (Upper Balsas and Lower Balsas). According to the multi-response permutation procedure, floristic composition of the two districts differs significantly, and the richness of exclusive species in Upper Balsas was higher (292 species) than in the Lower Balsas (32 species). The proportion of Mg and Ca in the soil and the precipitation of the driest three-month period were the environmental factors with greatest positive influence on species richness. The division of geographic districts subordinated to the province level, based on diverse families such as Asteraceae, proved to be appropriate to set up strategies for the conservation of the regional flora, since at this scale, variation in species richness is more evident. Our findings are consistent with a growing body of biogeographic literature that indicates that the identification of smaller biotic districts is more efficient for the conservation of biodiversity, particularly of endemic or rare plants, whose distribution responds more to microhabitats variation.

The aim of this work is to compare three biological strategies for the in situ remediation of a 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) polluted clayey soil by coupling electrokinetics (EK) and bioremediation (technology named as electrobioremediation, EBR). The first option (i) is EK-biostimulation, in which the activity of microorganisms already present in soil is enhanced by EK phenomena. The second and third options are EK-bioaugmentation, which consist of addition of microorganisms to soil through the inclusion of permeable biological barriers: (ii) using a microbial fixed biofilm reactor as biobarrier (BB1), and (iii) using a mixture of clean soil and a microbial suspension as biobarrier (BB2). Thus, three batch experiments at bench scale were conducted under a constant electric field of 1 V cm-1, and electrode polarity was periodically reversed every 12 h (2 d-1). The duration of each test was 10 days. Two additional tests using only biodegradation or only EK were performed as auxiliary reference tests. A microbial consortium acclimated to 2,4-D biodegradation was employed. Results showed that EK-biostimulation strategy offered the best pollutant removal efficiency (reaching up almost 100%) while biobarriers offered pollutant removal rates between 75 and 85%. Permeable biobarriers allowed the introduction of microorganism but caused a decrease in the electro-osmotic flow which, in turn, reduced the mobilization and contact between microorganisms and pollutants. These results can contribute to the knowledge and understanding of electrobioremediation of polluted soil and to the feasibility of delivering microorganism to the soil by using biobarriers. Despite biostimulation was found to be the best option, results show that permeable reactive biobarriers may result in a successful alternative for in-situ EK-bioaugmentation when acclimated microbial population is not already present in soil.

Little attention has been paid in Mexico to species' geographical distribution, particularly documenting geographic ranges, as a tool to estimate their conservation status. The objective of this study was to review known species distribution and propose potential and conservation status for Salvia species in Michoacán sState using Ecological Niche Models (ENM). We reviewed taxonomic studies for Salvia in Michoacán to compile an initial species checklist, built upon with recently-described species; all the specimens deposited in the National Herbarium were reviewed. The collection data allowed us to build niche models of Salvia species reported for Michoacán. ENM were generated for the species listed using Maxent. In order to minimise collinearity, environmental variables were selected using a Pearson correlation test. Individual models were statistically evaluated and the potential distribution models for each individual species were stacked to obtain the map of richness potential distribution in the State. A total of 66 species of Salvia are listed for Michoacán; however, ENM could only be constructed for 42 of those with ≥ 5 specimens. The environmental variable that most strongly contributed to the models was annual average temperature. The models estimated that Salvia species occupy an area of 23,541 km2 in the State, 72% in the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt and a second richest ecoregion is the Sierra Madre del Sur. Although only 3% of the potential distribution area for Salvia in Michoacán is within Protected Areas (PAs), nonetheless, no PA includes rare species. It will therefore be necessary to consider new protection areas or expand existing ones in order to adequately conserve Salvia richness and rarity in the State.

Plant genomes vary greatly in composition and size mainly due to the diversity of repetitive DNAs and the inherent propensity for their amplification and removal from the host genome. Most studies addressing repeatome dynamics focus on model organisms, whereas few provide comprehensive investigations across the genomes of related taxa. Herein, we analyze the evolution of repeats of the 13 species in Melampodium sect. Melampodium, representing all but two of its diploid taxa, in a phylogenetic context. The investigated genomes range in size from 0.49 to 2.27 pg/1C (ca. 4.5-fold variation), despite having the same base chromosome number (x = 10) and very strong phylogenetic affinities. Phylogenetic analysis performed in BEAST and ancestral genome size reconstruction revealed mixed patterns of genome size increases and decreases across the group. High-throughput genome skimming and the RepeatExplorer pipeline were utilized to determine the repeat families responsible for the differences in observed genome sizes. Patterns of repeat evolution were found to be highly correlated with phylogenetic position, namely taxonomic series circumscription. Major differences found were in the abundances of the SIRE (Ty1-copia), Athila (Ty3-gypsy), and CACTA (DNA transposon) lineages. Additionally, several satellite DNA families were found to be highly group-specific, although their overall contribution to genome size variation was relatively small. Evolutionary changes in repetitive DNA composition and genome size were complex, with independent patterns of genome up- and downsizing throughout the evolution of the analyzed diploids. A model-based analysis of genome size and repetitive DNA composition revealed evidence for strong phylogenetic signal and differential evolutionary rates of major lineages of repeats in the diploid genomes.

Finding a sound ecological-based approach for the removal of petroleum hydrocarbons (PHCs) from petroleum oily sludge (POS) generated in oil refinery plants is still a challenge. This study investigated the removal of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) using bioaugmentated composting (BC) by hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria (HDB) and vermicomposting (VC) by Eisenia fetida, individually and in combination (BCVC). After isolating two native bacterial strains from POS prepared from an oil refinery plant in Iran, the degradation capability of their consortium was initially assessed in mineral Bushnell-Haas medium (MBHM). Then, the biodegradation rates of POS in the BC, VC, and BCVC treatments containing different concentrations of TPHs (5, 10, and 20 g/kg) were determined by measuring TPHs before and after the biodegradation. The results showed that the consortium degraded 20-62% of TPHs contents of Kerosene (1-5%) in the MBHM after 7 days. After 12 weeks, the TPHs removal percentages in the BC, VC, and BCVC treatments were respectively found to be 81-83, 31-49, and 85-91 indicating the synergistic effect of bacteria and worms in bioremediation of POS. The PHCs biodegradation in the BC, VC, and BCVC experiments was fitted to 1st order model kinetics. The results of toxicity tests indicated that the values of the no observed lethal concentration (NOLC) and median lethal concentration (LC50) of TPHs were 2-5 and 14.64 g/kg, respectively after 28 days of earthworm exposure. Morphological impairments such as swelling, coiling, and curling were observed when TPHs concentration was even lower than NOLC. The study verified the effectiveness of vermicomposting bioaugmentated with the indigenous bacterial consortium for POS bioremediation.

The effect of competition between isolated petroleum-degrading bacteria (PDB) and indigenous compost microorganisms (ICM) on the efficiency of composting process in bioremediation of petroleum waste sludge (PWS) was investigated. After isolating two native PDB (Acinetobacter radioresistens strain KA5 and Enterobacter hormaechei strain KA6) from PWS, their ability for growth and crude oil degradation was examined in the mineral-based culture (MBC). Then, the PDB isolate were inoculated into the composting experiments and operated for 12 weeks. The results showed that the PDB degraded 21.65-68.73% of crude oil (1-5%) in the MBC after 7 days. The PDB removed 84.30% of total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPHs) in the composting bioreactor containing the initial TPH level of 20 g kg-1. Removal of petroleum hydrocarbons (PHCs) in the composting experiments proceeded according to the first-order kinetics. The computed values of degradation rate constants and half-lives showed a better performance of the PDB than ICM for TPHs removal. This finding suggests that simultaneous application of the PDB and ICM in the composting reactors resulted in a decline in the effectiveness of the PDB which is due to competition between them. The study also verified that the capability of PDB in degrading PHCs can be successfully scaled-up from MBC to composting process.

INTRODUCTION: Previous studies report the isolation mainly of terthiophene derivatives and flavonoids from Dyssodia species. Terthiophenes are known as photosensitizers by their capacity to generate singlet oxygen (1 O2 ), and flavonoid antioxidant activity is recognized. These opposite properties could represent interesting options in photodynamic therapy. OBJECTIVE: To determine the antioxidant and photosensitizer activities of extracts and isolates of Dyssodia pinnata by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). METHODOLOGY: Extracts and isolates were evaluated as antioxidants by the interactions with copper ion (Cu2+ ) observed in EPR, and by the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH) and the thiobarbituric reactive substances (TBARS) methods. Their abilities as 1 O2 producers were also estimated by EPR. RESULTS: Terthiophenes were obtained from hexane (DPH) and acetone (DPA) extracts, and flavonoids from DPA and methanol (DPM) extracts. The interaction with Cu2+ of extracts and isolated compounds of Dyssodia pinnata showed two effects in EPR: reduction and chelation; flavonoids exhibited both effects, while terthiophenes showed only reduction. DPA, DPM, and flavonoids were active in DPPH and TBARS assays. Quercetagetin-7-O-ß-glucoside showed the highest antioxidant and chelating activities, 3-glycosidated flavonoids were less active. Upon irradiation extracts and terthiophenes induced 1 O2 formation. CONCLUSION: Flavonoid reducing activity on Cu2+ and free radical scavenging capacity were related to the number of hydroxy groups and to the conjugation between the B and C rings. All tested flavonols showed a major complex with Cu2+ , with the most probable site of chelation between the 5-hydroxy and 4-oxo groups. Extracts and terthiophene derivatives showed photosensitizer activity. Thus, EPR is useful to evaluate free radical scavenging and pro-oxidant properties.

This paper focuses on the removal of lindane from soil washing effluents (SWEs) using combined electrochemical -biological processes. In particular, it has been evaluated the influence of the anodic material used in the electrolysis of the SWE on the biodegradability and toxicity of the effluents. Four anode materials were tested: Boron Doped Diamond (BDD), Carbon Felt (CF), and Mixed Metal Oxides Anodes with iridium and ruthenium (MMO-Ir and MMO-Ru). These materials were tested at different current densities and electric current charges applied. Lindane, TOC, sulphate, and chlorine species concentrations were monitored during electrochemical experiments, showing important differences in their evolution during the treatment. In spite of reaching a good removal of lindane with all the materials tested, results showed that Boron Doped Diamond working at 15 mA cm-2 achieved the best biodegradability results in the electrolyzed effluents, because the ratio BOD5/COD increased from 0.2 to 0.5, followed by Carbon Felt anode. Regarding toxicity, Carbon Felt decreased toxicity by 80%. Opposite to what it was expected, MMO anodes did not achieve biodegradability improvement and they only showed reduction in toxicity at high electrical charges.

Electrokinetic-assisted phytoremediation (EKPR) has been recently proposed for the removal of pesticides from polluted soils. In this work, we report the results from an EKPR experiment that was carried out in a mesocosm mock-up of 0.386 m3 using ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) and a low permeability soil spiked with atrazine. Plants were initially grown for 35 days; then, the soil was spiked with atrazine at a dose of 2 mg kg-1 soil. A DC electrical field of 0.6 V cm-1 was applied 24 h every day, switching polarity daily. Another identical mock-up with the same experimental conditions but without plants was used for comparison purposes. The duration of the EKPR test was 19 days during which some operational parameters were registered (electric current intensity, soil pH and temperature) and soil porewater samples were taken and analysed. Plant tissues and soil samples from the different sections in which the mock-ups were divided, were also collected and analysed at the end of the experiment. 3-D profiles of soil pH, water content and atrazine residues concentration in plants and soil were obtained and discussed. The results of this experiment were compared with others previously reported by us from a similar EKPR pot test. In spite of the difficulties to get an adequate geometric and operational similarity between setups of different scale, the main output parameters of the EKPR process (electric current, specific current charge, overall atrazine removal, specific atrazine removal efficiency, root biomass:soil weight ratio) were discussed. It was shown that, although the processes carried out are essentially the same in both scales, their extent may be quite different; it highlights the limitations of small-scale experiments to predict the results at field conditions.

Toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) is an extremely rare condition characterized by separation of dermoepidermal junctions, necrosis, and subsequent detachment of the epidermis over large cutaneous areas. TEN can emerge after exposure to certain medications such as allopurinol, aromatic anticonvulsants, NSAIDs, nevirapine, and antibacterial sulfonamides. There is no standard protocol for TEN, and the therapy of choice varies from one patient to another. Some of these therapies include silver-releasing wraps/dressings, glucocorticoids, antibodies to inhibit Fas-mediated keratinocyte apoptosis, and cyclosporine A. A 35-year-old male with an allergy to antibacterial sulfonamides who was being treated for arterial hypertension and hyperuricemia with captopril and allopurinol, respectively, was admitted to hospital. The patient showed skin detachment affecting approximately 95% of his surface area, including his face, upper and lower extremities, trunk, back, oropharyngeal mucosa, anal mucosa, ocular mucosa, and genital mucosa. Intravenous methylprednisolone at a dosage of 40 mg/day for 7 days along with abrasive cures was found to be an appropriate treatment in this case.

Oxyfluorfen is a non-polar herbicide that may cause severe soil pollution. The present work studies the possible improvement due to surfactant addition in the efficiency of electro-bioremediation of a clay soil polluted which such a non-polar, low-mobility pollutant. Two-week-long batch electro-bioremediation experiments were performed in a bench-scale device. Oxyfluorfen-polluted soil (20 mg kg-1) was inoculated with an acclimated microbial culture, and several experiments were performed using different surfactant concentrations in the electrode wells (0.0, 2.5, 5.0, 10.0 and 20.0 g L-1 of SDS, sodium dodecyl sulphate). Experiments were performed under 1.0 V cm-1 and electrode polarity reversal. It was observed that the electro-osmotic flow (EOF) increased with SDS concentration and that SDS was successfully distributed across the soil, probably improving the oxyfluorfen mobility. Additionally, microbiological activity was fully maintained during the experiments. Electro-bioremediation without SDS removed 14% of the oxyfluorfen, while under 2.5 g L-1 SDS, the efficiency increased to 22% because of an expected improvement in the contact between the different species in the soil. However, higher SDS concentrations (between 10.0 and 20.0 g L-1) caused a decrease in the oxyfluorfen removal efficiency, as SDS is an easily biodegradable compound and was preferably used as substrate by the microbial culture instead of oxyfluorfen. Additionally, the use of high concentrations of SDS was clearly inefficient, as high amounts of the surfactant were lost through the EOF, and even low amounts of oxyfluorfen were removed to the electrode wells, which means that ex situ treatment of the polluted water would be needed.

Fluoxil-24 is a commercial herbicide based on oxyfluorfen (a hazardous non-soluble organochlorinated compound) and additional compounds used as solvents. The aim of this work is to study the biotreatability of this commercial herbicide in water through batch experiments performed at different temperatures (15, 20, 25 and 30 °C) and initial concentrations (85, 150, 300 and 500 mg L-1 of oxyfluorfen). Activated sludge from an oil refinery wastewater treatment plant was acclimated and used for biodegradation experiments. Two main mechanisms, volatilization and biodegradation, were observed to be responsible of the herbicide removal. Fluoxil-24 removal efficiencies between approximately 40% and 80% were reached after 70 h, depending on the conditions used, and oxyfluorfen was not completely removed. Regarding the influence of the temperature, thermal inhibition problems appeared at 30 °C, and the volatilization rate of solvents increased, causing oxyfluorfen to become unavailable for microorganisms. An increase of herbicide initial concentration did not clearly affect the herbicide removal efficiency, whereas it negatively affected the biological mechanism. The experimental results were fitted to a mathematical model that included both simultaneous mechanisms of volatilization and Monod biodegradation kinetics. The model was able to predict the experimental results, and the calculated model parameters confirmed the effect of the variables under study.
