Introduction The inguino-scrotal/labial region, anatomically defined as the juncture where the thigh meets the lower abdomen, encompassing the ipsilateral scrotal area in men and the inguino-labial area in women, exhibits a broad spectrum of masses. Traditionally, these swellings were clinically diagnosed with high accuracy, primarily due to the prevalence of simple hernias and hydroceles. However, contemporary observations reveal a surge in complex inguino-scrotal/labial swellings, particularly in referral hospitals, necessitating additional radiological and imaging modalities for precise diagnosis. Our interest in this subject was sparked by the escalating numbers of intricate inguino-scrotal/labial masses encountered in our medical setting, posing challenges for clinical diagnosis in both pediatric and adult populations. Materials and methods A prospective, observational study was conducted over two years (August 2021 to March 2023) involving 210 patients presenting with inguino-scrotal/labial swellings at our institute. Clinical data were meticulously collected using a designed pro forma, following informed consent procedures. Results Among the 210 patients with inguino-scrotal/labial swellings, males predominated (194) compared to females (16). The paediatric age group comprised 84 patients, while 126 were adults. Radiological investigations played a crucial role in diagnosing 40 patients and provided significant additional information in 12 cases. Radiological investigations contributed to the diagnosis in 52 patients (24.76%). The study revealed a spectrum of new entities in the inguino-scrotal/labial region, including malignancies, lymph nodal masses in the groin, and vascular, inflammatory, and congenital lesions, which might have been overlooked if solely relying on clinical parameters for diagnosis. Conclusion Inguino-scrotal/labial swelling patients, especially those facing diagnostic dilemmas or harbouring complex lesions, should undergo radiological assessment as an indispensable criterion, particularly when such facilities are readily accessible.

Triple-negative breast cancer is the most aggressive form of breast cancer with limited intervention options. Moreover, a number of belligerent therapeutic strategies adopted to treat such aggressive forms of cancer have demonstrated detrimental side effects. This necessitates exploration of targeted chemotherapeutics. We assessed the efficacy of a novel indenone derivative (nID) [(±)-N-(2-(-5-methoxy-1-oxo-3-(2-oxo-2-phenylethyl)-2,3-dihydro-1H-inden-2-yl)ethyl)-4-methylbenzenesulfonamide], synthesized by a novel internal nucleophile-assisted palladium-catalyzed hydration-olefin insertion cascade; against triple-negative breast cancer cells (MDA-MB-231). On 24 h treatment, the nID caused decline in the viability of MDA-MB-231 and MDA-MB-468 cells, but did not significantly (P < 0.05) affect WRL-68 (epithelial-like) cells. In fact, the nID demonstrated augmentation of p53 expression, and consequent p53-dependent senescence in both MDA-MB-231 and MDA-MB-468 cells, but not in WRL-68 cells. The breast cancer cells also exhibited reduced proliferation, downregulated p65/NF-κB and survivin, along with augmented p21Cip1/WAF1 expression, on treatment with the nID. This ensued cell cycle arrest at G1 stage, which might have driven the MDA-MB-231 cells to senescence. We observed a selectivity of the nID to target MDA-MB-231 cells, whereas WRL-68 cells did not show any considerable effect. The results underscored that the nID has potential to be developed into a cancer therapeutic.

RESUMO

An in-silico system to encode structure, bonding and properties of coordination complexes is developed. The encoding is achieved through a semantic XML markup frame. Composition of the coordination complexes is captured in terms of central atom and ligands. Structural information of central atom is detailed in terms of electron status of valence electron orbitals. The ligands are encoded with specific reference to the electron environment of ligand centre atoms. Behaviour of ligands to form low or high spin complexes is accomplished by assigning a Ligand Centre Value to every ligand based on the electronic environment of ligand centre atom. Chemical ontologies are used for categorization purpose and to control different hybridization schemes. Complexes formed by the central atoms of transition metal, non-transition elements belonging to s-block, p-block and f-block are encoded with a generic encoding platform. Complexes of homoleptic, heteroleptic and bridged types are also covered by this encoding system. Utility of the encoded system to predict redox electron transfer reaction in the coordination complexes is demonstrated with a simple application.

RESUMO

Hemophagocytic syndrome (HPS) has been associated with infections, hematological malignancies and autoimmune conditions. Malaria is rarely reported to cause HPS. We report a case of an 11-month-old infant with fever, hepatosplenomegaly, pancytopenia, high serum ferritin, hypertriglyceridemia, and bone marrow hemophagocytosis, consistent with hemophagocytic syndrome. Gametocytes of plasmodium falciparum were identified on bone marrow aspiration. Rapid recovery was observed after treatment with antimalarials.

RESUMO

Aicardi syndrome is a genetic disorder characterized by the triad of infantile spasm in flexion, callosal agenesis and ocular abnormalities (chorioretinal lacunae, coloboma of optic disc). We report a typical case of Aicardi syndrome with all the classical features.
