RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To evaluate whether the prevalence of traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) in permanent anterior teeth among school children is associated with sleep behaviours and disorders. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out with a representative sample of schoolchildren aged 8 to 10 years (n = 1402) from Florianopolis, Brazil. Clinical examinations for TDIs were performed according to the classification proposed by Andreasen. Parents/caregivers completed a questionnaire addressing sociodemographic characteristics and sleep behaviours/disorders (sleep duration, insomnia, sleep rhythmic movement, snoring, and signs of sleep apnoea). Descriptive analysis and Poisson regression were performed. RESULTS: The prevalence of TDIs was 10.9%. Insomnia was observed in 3.0% of the children, snoring in 42.8%, sleep rhythmic movement in 27.9%, and signs of obstructive sleep apnoea in 33.6% of the schoolchildren. Most children (75.2%) slept less than eight hours a day. The prevalence of TDIs was higher among schoolchildren with an increased overjet (PR: 1.65; 95% CI: 1.15-2.35; P < 0.01), after adjusting for monthly family income, caregiver's schooling, and sleep behaviours. The prevalence of TDIs was not associated with sleep behaviours/disorders. CONCLUSIONS: Parent-reported sleep disorders such as insomnia, sleep rhythmic movement, snoring and signs of sleep apnoea were not associated with the prevalence of TDIs in schoolchildren. © 2024 Australian Dental Association.

RESUMO

In recent decades, the connections between academic skills, such as reading, writing, and calculation, and motor skills/capacities have received increasing attention. Many studies provided evidence for motor difficulties in children and adolescents with dyslexia, prompting the need for a meta-analysis to combine these multiple findings. Therefore, we conducted a meta-analysis using PsycINFO, Pubmed, and SportDiscus as scientific databases. A total of 572 studies were analyzed following several stringent inclusion criteria, resulting in the inclusion of 23 peer-reviewed studies in the final analysis. Our results showed that children and adolescents with dyslexia displayed significant different performances in multiple motor tasks and these differences persisted also when the type of motor task was considered as moderator in the analysis. The present findings are in accordance with the literature that supports a close connection between reading disabilities and difficulties in motor skills/capacities.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) in medial displacement calcaneus osteotomy (MDCO) has been proposed for surgical correction of adult-acquired flat foot deformity (AAFD) to reduce complications of open approaches. The aim of our study is to systematically analyze complications and the clinical and radiological results of MIS- MDCO. METHODS: A systematic review of the English literature was performed on 30th October 2023. Randomized controlled trials and non-randomized trials, cohort studies, case-control studies and case series concerning surgical correction of AAFD with MIS-MDCO and with at least 15 patients were included. Case reports, technical notes, animal or cadaveric studies were excluded. The quality and risk of bias of the studies included were evaluated using GRADE and MINORS systems. Complications rate, clinical and radiological results were inferred from the studies included. RESULTS: Nine articles were included. A total of 501 cases treated with MIS-MDCO were analysed with a mean follow-up of 11.9 ± 5.1 months. The reported wound infection rate was about 3% and sural neuropathy was rated about 1%. Only 4% of the cases required removal of the screw for pain. In the comparative studies (MIS versus Open MDCO), comparable clinical results but with significant differences (P < 0.001) in infection rates (1% versus 14%) and sural neuropathy (2% versus 1%) were observed. CONCLUSION: AAFD correction performed with MIS-MDCO, with the limitation of a poor quality and high risk of bias of the included studies, seems to provide good clinical results and high subjective satisfaction with a lower complication rate compared to open approach. Further high-quality long-term comparative studies could better clarify complications and clinical and radiological outcomes of the MIS technique in the treatment of AAFD. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level IV.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Adult spinal deformity (ASD) surgery gives good clinical outcomes but has a high rate of mechanical complications (MC). In 2016, Lafage described the age-adjusted alignment thresholds (AAAT) to adapt the correction in relation to patient's age proposing less aggressive corrections for the elderly population. The aim of this review was to clarify the effectiveness of AAAT to achieve good health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and their relationship with post-operative MC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a review of the literature, including articles reporting data on post-operative HRQoL and MC rates in relation to the AAAT. Data were stratified according to whether they matched the AAAT, dividing the population in undercorrected (U), matched (M) and overcorrected (O). The quality of the included studies was assessed using the GRADE and MINORS systems. RESULTS: Six articles reporting data from 1,825 patients were included. The different categories (U, M and O) had homogeneous pre-operative sagittal parameters (p > 0.05) that became statistically different after surgeries (p < 0.05). Proximal junctional kyphosis (PJK) was more frequent in the O group compared to U (p = 0.05). Post-operative HRQoL parameters were similar in the 3 groups (p > 0.05). The quality of the included studies was generally low with a high bias risk. CONCLUSION: The results extrapolated from this review are interesting, as for the same HRQoL the U group had a lower MC rate. Unfortunately, the results are inconsistent, mainly because of the low quality of the included studies and the lack of reporting of some important patient- and surgery-related factors.

RESUMO

Hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis (ATTRv) is a genetic, autosomal dominant, severe disease characterized by progressive sensory-motor polyneuropathy, cardiomyopathy, dysautonomia, renal and eyes involvement, provoked by the deposition of the mutated and unstable transthyretin protein. In past decades, liver transplant, avoiding the synthesis of the pathologic protein, has been a good, even if not resolutive, treatment. In this report we describe two siblings affected with ATTRv, who developed first symptoms of disease at a young age and underwent a liver transplant with prompt resolution of clinical manifestations. After several years, central nervous system and eyes symptoms relapsed despite treatment, considering that the synthesis of mutated protein continues in choroid plexus, a locum where current therapies are unable to act. In our opinion, these cases represent a long-term prognostic model for the novel gene-silencers approved for ATTRv, because they share a similar therapeutic effect with liver transplant: the block of mutated protein synthesis limited only in the main transthyretin (TTR) production organ is able to prevent the progression of disease only for some years, but not to avoid long-term clinical worsening due to extra-hepatic production of TTR. Novel future therapeutic strategies are demanded to guarantee a better long-term stabilization of symptomatology.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: In 2017, the GAP score was proposed as a tool to reduce mechanical complications (MC) in adult spinal deformity (ASD) surgery: the reported MC rate for the GAP proportioned category was only 6%, which is clearly lower to the MC rate reported in the literature. The aim of this study is to analyse if the most recent literature confirms the promising results of the original article. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using the PRISMA flow chart, we reviewed the literature to analyse GAP score capacity in predicting MC occurrence. We included articles clearly reporting ASD surgery MC stratified by GAP categories and the score's overall capacity to predict MC using the area under the curve (AUC). The quality of the included studies was evaluated using GRADE and MINORS systems. RESULTS: Eleven retrospective articles (1,517 patients in total) were included. The MC distribution per GAP category was as follows: GAP-P, 32.8%; GAP-MD, 42.3%; GAP-SD, 55.4%. No statistically significant difference was observed between the different categories using the Kruskal-Wallis test (p = 0.08) and the two-by-two Pearson-Chi square test (P Vs MD, p = 0.300; P Vs SD, p = 0.275; MD Vs SD, p = 0.137). The global AUC was 0.68 ± 0.2 (moderate accuracy). The included studies were of poor quality according to the GRADE system and had a high risk of bias based on the MINORS criteria. CONCLUSION: The actual literature does not corroborate the excellent results reported by the original GAP score article. Further prospective studies, possibly stratified by type of MC and type of surgery, are necessary to validate this score.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The microbiome is emerging as a crucial player of the immune checkpoint in cancer. Melanoma is a highly immunogenic tumour, and the composition of the gut microbiome has been correlated to prognosis and evolution of advanced melanoma and proposed as a biomarker for immune checkpoint therapy. OBJECTIVES: We investigated the gut fungal and bacterial compositions in early-stage melanoma and correlated microbial profiles with histopathological features. METHODS: Sequencing of bacterial 16S rRNA and the fungal internal transcribed spacer region was performed on faecal samples of patients with stage I and II melanoma, and healthy controls. A meta-analysis with gut microbiota data from patients with metastatic melanoma was also carried out. RESULTS: We found a combination of gut fungal and bacterial profiles significantly discriminating patients with melanoma from controls. In patients with melanoma, we observed an abundance of Prevotella copri and yeasts belonging to the order Saccharomycetales. We found that the bacterial and fungal community correlated to melanoma invasiveness, whereas the specific fungal profile correlated to melanoma regression. Bacteroides was identified as general marker of immunogenicity, being shared by regressive and invasive melanoma. In addition, the bacterial communities in patients with stage I and II melanoma were different in structure and richer than those from patients with metastatic melanoma. CONCLUSIONS: The composition of the gut microbiota in early-stage melanoma changes along the gradient from in situ to invasive (and metastatic) melanoma. Changes in the microbiota and mycobiota are correlated to the histological features of early-stage melanoma, and to the clinical course and response to immune therapies of advanced-stage melanoma, through direct or indirect immunomodulation.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED) infection is a major complication that increases morbidity and mortality after the procedure. Several infection risk scores have been suggested to identify patients at higher pre-procedural risk of infection OBJECTIVE: this study sought to evaluate rates of infection, potential risk factors and the role of a modified "Shariff" score as predictor of infection in high-risk patients undergoing de novo CIED implantation. METHODS AND RESULTS: We retrospectively analysed 1391 patients underwent a de novo CIED procedure during the study period. At the median follow-up of 48 months, 20 patients of 1391 (1.4%) developed a CIED-related infective event. In our population, we studied a modified version of the "Shariff" score for only first-time implant patients. At multivariate regression analysis, three factors were independent predictors of infection: previous pocket hematoma [RR 27.2 (8.30-54.02), p = 10-10], a Shariff Score ≥ 4 [RR 3.20 (1.29-12.59), p= 0.029]. and reintervention for catheter malfunction or dislocation [RR 3.57 (1.2-37.4), p= 0.048]. CONCLUSIONS: a "Shariff" score > 4 is suggested as a predictor of higher risk of infection in patients after de novo device implantation. The use of an infection risk score may help to improve tailored pre-operatory strategies to prevent infection.

RESUMO

Arrhythmic sudden cardiac death (SCD) represents a major worldwide public health problem accounting for 15-20% of deaths. Risk stratification to identify patients at risk of SCD is crucial in order to implement preventive measures in the general population. Several biomarkers have been tested exploring different pathophysiological mechanisms of cardiac conditions. Conflicting results have been described limiting so far their use in clinical practice. The use of new biomarkers such as microRNAs and sex hormones and the emerging role of genetic on risk prediction of SCD is a current research topic showing promising results. This review outlines the role of plasma biomarkers to predict ventricular arrhythmias and SCD in non coronary artery disease with a special focus on their relationship with the genetic biomarkers.

RESUMO

The paper presents the main steps in the development of the strongly nonlinear wave dynamics of discrete systems. The initial motivation was prompted by the challenges in the design of barriers to mitigate high-amplitude compression pulses caused by impact or explosion. But this area poses a fundamental mathematical and physical problem and should be considered as a natural step in developing strongly nonlinear wave dynamics. Strong nonlinearity results in a highly tunable behaviour and allows design of systems with properties ranging from a weakly nonlinear regime, similar to the classical case of the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam lattice, or to a non-classical case of sonic vacuum. Strongly nonlinear systems support periodic waves and one of the fascinating results was a discovery of a strongly nonlinear solitary wave in sonic vacuum (a limiting case of a periodic wave) with properties very different from the Korteweg de Vries solitary wave. Shock-like oscillating and monotonous stationary stress waves can also be supported if the system is dissipative. The paper discusses the main theoretical and experimental results, focusing on travelling waves and possible future developments in the area of strongly nonlinear metamaterials. This article is part of the theme issue 'Nonlinear energy transfer in dynamical and acoustical systems'.

RESUMO

One of the largest surveys in Europe about energy consumption in Italian wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is presented, based on 241 WWTPs and a total population equivalent (PE) of more than 9,000,000 PE. The study contributes towards standardised resilient data and benchmarking and to identify potentials for energy savings. In the energy benchmark, three indicators were used: specific energy consumption expressed per population equivalents (kWh PE-1 year-1), per cubic meter (kWh/m3), and per unit of chemical oxygen demand (COD) removed (kWh/kgCOD). The indicator kWh/m3, even though widely applied, resulted in a biased benchmark, because highly influenced by stormwater and infiltrations. Plants with combined networks (often used in Europe) showed an apparent better energy performance. Conversely, the indicator kWh PE-1 year-1 resulted in a more meaningful definition of a benchmark. High energy efficiency was associated with: (i) large capacity of the plant, (ii) higher COD concentration in wastewater, (iii) separate sewer systems, (iv) capacity utilisation over 80%, and (v) high organic loads, but without overloading. The 25th percentile was proposed as a benchmark for four size classes: 23 kWh PE-1 y-1 for large plants > 100,000 PE; 42 kWh PE-1 y-1 for capacity 10,000 < PE < 100,000, 48 kWh PE-1 y-1 for capacity 2,000 < PE < 10,000 and 76 kWh PE-1 y-1 for small plants < 2,000 PE.

RESUMO

AIM: To evaluate acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI) shear-wave velocities of the bowel wall in patients with Crohn's disease (CD). MATERIAL AND METHODS: ARFI shear-wave elastography was analysed within the wall of the stomach, terminal ileum, and sigmoid, and correlated with ultrasound signs of activity in CD patients both retrospectively and in a prospective cohort. RESULTS: A total of 77 retrospective and 21 prospective CD patients were included. ARFI elastography in the stomach, the normal ileum, and sigmoid was lower than in ileitis or sigmoiditis. Retrospectively, the ARFI values correlated with the bowel wall thickness and Limberg vascularisation score. Prospectively, there was no correlation between ARFI and bowel wall thickness, Limberg score, clinical activity, or C-reactive protein. A cut-off analysis of 105 ileal ARFI measurements showed a cut-off value of 1.92 m/s for the diagnosis of ileal inflammation with 75.3% sensitivity and 87.5% specificity. CONCLUSION: In patients with CD, ARFI shear-wave velocities show a trend to higher values in inflamed bowel wall thickening on B-mode ultrasound; however, the differences appear small and may not be clinically significant. The factors influencing ARFI measurements of the bowel wall require further investigation.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Computing patients' similarity is of great interest in precision oncology since it supports clustering and subgroup identification, eventually leading to tailored therapies. The availability of large amounts of biomedical data, characterized by large feature sets and sparse content, motivates the development of new methods to compute patient similarities able to fuse heterogeneous data sources with the available knowledge. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this work, we developed a data integration approach based on matrix trifactorization to compute patient similarities by integrating several sources of data and knowledge. We assess the accuracy of the proposed method: (1) on several synthetic data sets which similarity structures are affected by increasing levels of noise and data sparsity, and (2) on a real data set coming from an acute myeloid leukemia (AML) study. The results obtained are finally compared with the ones of traditional similarity calculation methods. RESULTS: In the analysis of the synthetic data set, where the ground truth is known, we measured the capability of reconstructing the correct clusters, while in the AML study we evaluated the Kaplan-Meier curves obtained with the different clusters and measured their statistical difference by means of the log-rank test. In presence of noise and sparse data, our data integration method outperform other techniques, both in the synthetic and in the AML data. DISCUSSION: In case of multiple heterogeneous data sources, a matrix trifactorization technique can successfully fuse all the information in a joint model. We demonstrated how this approach can be efficiently applied to discover meaningful patient similarities and therefore may be considered a reliable data driven strategy for the definition of new research hypothesis for precision oncology. CONCLUSION: The better performance of the proposed approach presents an advantage over previous methods to provide accurate patient similarities supporting precision medicine.

RESUMO

Given the crucial role of microbiota in host development, health, and environmental interactions, genomic analyses focusing on host-microbiota interactions should certainly be considered in the investigation of the adaptive mechanisms to environmental stress. Recently, several studies suggested that microbiota associated to digestive tract is a key, although still not fully understood, player that must be considered to assess the toxicity of environmental contaminants. Bacteria-dependent metabolism of xenobiotics may indeed modulate the host toxicity. Conversely, environmental variables (including pollution) may alter the microbial community and/or its metabolic activity leading to host physiological alterations that may contribute to their toxicity. Here, 16s rRNA gene amplicon sequencing has been applied to characterize the hepatopancreas microbiota composition of the Manila clam, Ruditapes philippinarum. The animals were collected in the Venice lagoon area, which is subject to different anthropogenic pressures, mainly represented by the industrial activities of Porto Marghera (PM). Seasonal and geographic differences in clam microbiotas were explored and linked to host response to chemical stress identified in a previous study at the transcriptome level, establishing potential interactions among hosts, microbes, and environmental parameters. The obtained results showed the recurrent presence of putatively detoxifying bacterial taxa in PM clams during winter and over-representation of several metabolic pathways involved in xenobiotic degradation, which suggested the potential for host-microbial synergistic detoxifying actions. Strong interaction between seasonal and chemically-induced responses was also observed, which partially obscured such potentially synergistic actions. Seasonal variables and exposure to toxicants were therefore shown to interact and substantially affect clam microbiota, which appeared to mirror host response to environmental variation. It is clear that understanding how animals respond to chemical stress cannot ignore a key component of such response, the microbiota.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) is a valuable tool in the diagnostic approach of focal liver lesions, but occasionally subjective and observer-dependent. Semiquantitative evaluation of dynamic CEUS (DCEUS) with standardised software programmes such as Dynamic Vascular Pattern (DVP) could help to improve diagnostic accuracy and objectivity in liver tumour assessment. OBJECTIVES: The present study aimed at evaluation of diagnostic accuracy of DVP in a clinical setting. MATERIALS AND METHODS: DVP images of 52 focal liver lesions [30 hepatocellular carcinomas (HCCs), 15 intrahepatic cholangiocellular carcinomas (ICCs), 7 focal nodular hyperplasias (FNHs)] were analysed by four blinded observers with different levels of CEUS-experience. Diagnostic accuracies for the assessment of dignity and entity were evaluated. RESULTS: Mean sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive value for detection of malignancy with DVP were 48.4% /67.8% /92.7% and 29.3%, respectively. Total diagnostic accuracies for dignity/entity were 63.9% /38.5% (HCC: 58.3% /25.8%; ICC: 73.3% /50%; FNH: 67.9% /67.9%). Interreader-agreement was moderate (κ= 0.42-0.58). Differential diagnosis between ICC and HCC was most challenging. CONCLUSION: Although developed to improve diagnostic accuracy and objectivity in the assessment of focal liver lesions, DVP alone seems insufficient for differential diagnosis of HCC, ICC and FNH and cannot replace the skills of an experienced observer.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Acute gastrointestinal (GI) wall defects contain a high risk of morbidity and mortality and may be closed endoscopically by a full-thickness over-the-scope clip (OTSC). METHODS: Unselected consecutive patients presenting with acute non-surgical perforations or postoperative anastomotic leaks or perforations underwent attempted OTSC placement as primary closure method after interdisciplinary consensus in three tertiary referral centres. Their clinical data and intervention characteristics were evaluated in an intention to treat analysis during a 24-month period to assess closure rates, 30-day mortality, hospitalization and comorbidity. RESULTS: In total, 34 patients (16 females, 18 males, 69.5 years) were included with 22 non-surgical perforations and 12 postoperative anastomotic leaks or perforations. Definitive closure of the perforations and leaks was achieved in 26/34 patients (76.5 %). Successful closure of the GI wall defect resulted in a significantly shorter hospital stay (8 days, p = 0.03) and was significantly correlated with comorbidity (r = 0.56, p = 0.005). In the group with OTSC failure, hospitalization was 18 days and 6 of 8 patients (75 %) required immediate surgery. Three deaths occurred in the group with successful OTSC closure due to comorbidity, while one death in the OTSC failure group was related to a refractory perforation. Favourable indications and locations for a successful OTSC procedure were identified as PEG complications, endoscopic or postoperative leaks of stomach, colon or rectum, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: In unselected patients, OTSC was effective for closure of acute GI wall defects in more than 75 % of all patients. Clinical success and short hospitalization were best achieved in patients without comorbidity, but closure of the perforation or the anastomotic leak was found to be not the only parameter relevant for patient outcome and mortality.

RESUMO

The shock waves generated by a plate impact are numerically investigated in Al-W laminates with different mesostructures. The main characteristic time scales (and the corresponding spatial scales) related to the formation of the stationary shock are identified: the duration (width) of the leading front, the time (distance) from the impact required to establish a stationary profile, and the shock front width, identified as a time span (distance) from the initial state to the final quasiequilibrium state. It is demonstrated that the width of the leading front and the maximum strain rates are determined by the dispersive and the nonlinear parameters of the laminate and not by the dissipation, as is the case for uniform solids. The characteristic spatial scale of the leading front is related to the spatial scale observed on solitarylike waves, which are satisfactorily described by the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) approximation, as well as the speed of the wave and the ratio of maximum to final strain. The dissipation affects the width of the transition distance (shock front width) where multiple loading-unloading cycles bring the laminate into the final quasiequilibrium state. This spatial scale is of the same order of magnitude as the distance to form stationary shock wave. The period of fast decaying oscillations is well described by the KdV approach and scales linearly with the cell size. The rate of the decay of the oscillations in the numerical calculations does not scale with the square of the cell size as expected from the dissipative KdV approach that assumes a constant viscosity. This is due to the different mechanisms of dissipation in high-amplitude compression pulses.

RESUMO

In the work-up of focal pancreatic lesions autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP) is a rare differential diagnosis to pancreatic cancer (PC) with similar clinical constellations. The aim of our study was to compare differences between proven AIP and PC using transabdominal dynamic contrast enhanced ultrasound (DCE-US). Therefore we recorded 3-minute-clips of CEUS examinations and analyzed perfusion parameters with VueBox®-quantification software. To obtain DCE-US Parameters, Regions-of-Interest were selected within the lesions and the surrounding pancreas parenchyma, serving as reference tissue. We compared 3 patients with AIP (mean age: 58 years; lesion mean size: 40 mm) to 17 patients with PC (mean age: 68 years; lesion mean size: 35.9 mm). Significant differences between PC and parenchyma could be found in the following parameters: Peak-Enhancement (PE), Wash-in-and-Wash-out-AUC, Wash-in Perfusion-Index. PE of AIP was comparable to normal parenchyma. The relation of PE between parenchyma and lesion (ΔPE) AIP and PC was significantly different [AIP: 0.21 (±0.06); PC: 0.81 (±0.1); p<0.01]. PE of neoplastic lesions was significantly lower as AIP and normal parenchyma (p<0.01). Therefore perfusion analysis in DCE-US can help to differentiate hypovascular PC from AIP presenting nearly isovascular time intensity curves. Diagnostic accuracy of DCE-US in this setting has to be validated in future prospective studies in comparison to CT and MRI.

RESUMO

Energy audits in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) reveal large differences in the energy consumption in the various stages, depending also on the indicators used in the audits. This work is aimed at formulating a suitable methodology to perform audits in WWTPs and identifying the most suitable key energy consumption indicators for comparison among different plants and benchmarking. Hydraulic-based stages, stages based on chemical oxygen demand, sludge-based stages and building stages were distinguished in WWTPs and analysed with different energy indicators. Detailed energy audits were carried out on five small WWTPs treating less than 10,000 population equivalent and using continuous data for 2 years. The plants have in common a low designed capacity utilization (52% on average) and equipment oversizing which leads to waste of energy in the absence of controls and inverters (a common situation in small plants). The study confirms that there are several opportunities for reducing energy consumption in small WWTPs: in addition to the pumping of influent wastewater and aeration, small plants demonstrate low energy efficiency in recirculation of settled sludge and in aerobic stabilization. Denitrification above 75% is ensured through intermittent aeration and without recirculation of mixed liquor. Automation in place of manual controls is mandatory in illumination and electrical heating.

RESUMO

We study the evolution of high-amplitude stress pulses in periodic dissipative laminates taking into account the nonlinear constitutive equations of the components and their dissipative behavior. Aluminum-tungsten laminate was selected due to the large difference in acoustic impedances of components, the significant nonlinearity of the aluminum constitutive equation at the investigated range of stresses, and its possible practical applications. Laminates with different cell size, which controls the internal time scale, impacted by plates with different thicknesses that determine the incoming pulse duration, were investigated. It has been observed that the ratio of the duration of the incoming pulse to the internal characteristic time determines the nature of the high-amplitude dissipative propagating waves-a triangular oscillatory shock-like profile, a train of localized pulses, or a single localized pulse. These localized quasistationary waves resemble solitary waves even in the presence of dissipation: The similar pulses emerged from different initial conditions, indicating that they are inherent properties of the corresponding laminates; their characteristic length scale is determined by the scale of mesostructure, nonlinear properties of materials, and the stress amplitude; and a linear relationship exists between their speed and amplitude. They mostly recover their shapes after collision with phase shift. A theoretical description approximating the shape, length scale, and speed of these high-amplitude dissipative pulses was proposed based on the Korteweg-de Vries equation with a dispersive term determined by the mesostructure and a nonlinear term derived using Hugoniot curves of components.
