AIMS: Psychotherapy is a widely used treatment for mental disorders, but whether it also improves employment and other labour market outcomes remains inconclusive. This study examined the effectiveness of a nationwide subsidized psychotherapy programme using extensive register-based data. METHODS: The sample consisted of individuals who applied for rehabilitative psychotherapy in Finland in 2009-2012 (n = 35,083). Prior to 2011, some applications were rejected due to the limited budget that the central government provided for the programme. From 2011, all eligible applicants were granted rehabilitation. We used propensity score matching to create balanced samples of those who received a negative decision in 2009-2010 (n = 2047) and those who were granted rehabilitative psychotherapy in 2011-2012 (n = 12,046) in terms of their sociodemographic background characteristics, prior labour market attachment and health status. RESULTS: We found that compared to the applicants who were not accepted to the programme, the granted applicants with similar background characteristics had, on average, a six-percentage-point higher employment rate, €2100 higher annual earnings and a six-percentage-point lower probability of becoming a disability benefit recipient five years after their first application. Further sensitivity analyses confirmed that these results were not biased, for example, by differences in macroeconomic conditions during the follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: Quasi-experimental research design showed that rehabilitative psychotherapy was significantly associated with better labour market outcomes. Although several relevant background factors were included in the matching analysis, it is possible that some unobserved factors explain both access to psychotherapy and subsequent labour market outcomes.

ABSTRACT: Mastitis causes significant economic losses to the dairy cattle industry. The present study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial properties of 39 heterocyclic derivatives (1,3-thiazoles and 4-thiazolidinones) against clinical mastitis isolates from dairy cows. Milk samples were collected from cows with clinical mastitis and the bacterial species were identified by PCR. Antibacterial activity was assessed using the broth microdilution method. First, 39 heterocyclic compounds were tested against four bacterial isolates (Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus agalactiae, Corynebacterium bovis and Escherichia coli) randomly chosen from those recovered from the milk samples (Study 1). Subsequently, the compounds with the strongest antibacterial activity were tested against all the bacterial isolates recovered from the milk samples (Study 2). 1,3-thiazoles showed the strongest antibacterial activity, specially compounds 30 and 38, which also showed bactericidal properties according to their minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimal bactericidal concentration (MBC) values. Corynebacterium spp. and Enterobacteriaceae isolates were the most susceptible to compounds 30 and 38. Compounds 30 and 38 are promising targets for new antimicrobial agents.


RESUMO: A mastite causa significativas perdas econômicas à indústria leiteira bovina. O presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar as propriedades antibacterianas de 39 derivados heterocíclicos (1,3-tiazóis e 4-tiazolidinonas) contra isolados clínicos de mastite em vacas leiteiras. Amostras de leite foram coletadas de vacas com mastite clínica e as espécies bacterianas isoladas foram identificadas por PCR. A atividade antibacteriana foi avaliada pelo método de microdiluição em caldo. Primeiramente, os 39 compostos heterocíclicos foram testados contra quatro isolados bacterianos (Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus agalactiae, Corynebacterium bovis e Escherichia coli) escolhidos aleatoriamente dentre os recuperados das amostras de leite (Estudo 1). Posteriormente, compostos com atividade antibacteriana mais forte foram testados contra todos os isolados bacterianos recuperados das amostras de leite (Estudo 2). Os compostos 1,3-tiazóis apresentaram a maior atividade antibacteriana, principalmente os compostos 30 e 38, que também apresentaram propriedades bactericidas de acordo com seus valores de concentração inibitória mínima (CIM) e concentração bactericida mínima (CBM). Os isolados Corynebacterium spp. e Enterobacteriaceae foram os mais suscetíveis aos compostos 30 e 38. Os compostos 30 e 38 mostraram-se promissores como novos agentes antimicrobianos.

Abstract Inflammatory bowel diseases, which include Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, are characterized by chronic and relapsed gut inflammation. Caulerpa mexicana is a type of green marine algae that can be found in tropical areas, such as the Brazilian Coastland. These macrophytes exhibit in vitro and in vivo anti-inflammatory properties such as the ability to reduce both cell migration to different sites and edema formation induced by chemical irritants. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of the C. mexicana methanolic extract on the treatment of colitis induced by dextran sodium sulfate. Acute experimental colitis was induced in BALB/c mice by treatment with 3% dextran sodium sulfate orally for 14 days. During this 14-day period, C. mexicana methanolic extract (2 mg/kg/day) was given intravenously on alternate days. Treatment with the methanolic extract significantly attenuated body weight loss and severe clinical symptoms. This was associated with a remarkable amelioration of colonic architecture disruption and a significant reduction in pro-inflammatory cytokine production. These results suggest that the anti-inflammatory action of C. mexicana methanolic extract on colorectal sites may be a useful therapeutic approach for inflammatory bowel diseases.

The effect of an adventure sprint race (ASR) on T-cell proliferation, leukocyte count and muscle damage was evaluated. Seven young male runners completed an ASR in the region of Serra do Espinhaço, Brazil. The race induced a strong leukocytosis (6.22±2.04×103 cells/mm3 before vs 14.81±3.53×103 cells/mm3 after the race), marked by a significant increase of neutrophils and monocytes (P<0.05), but not total lymphocytes, CD3+CD4+ or CD3+CD8+ cells. However, the T-cell proliferative response to mitogenic stimulation was increased (P=0.025) after the race, which contradicted our hypothesis that ASR, as a high-demand competition, would inhibit T-cell proliferation. A positive correlation (P=0.03, r=0.79) was observed between the proliferative response of lymphocytes after the race and the time to complete the race, suggesting that the proliferative response was dependent on exercise intensity. Muscle damage was evident after the race by increased serum levels of aspartate amino transferase (24.99±8.30 vs 50.61±15.76 U/L, P=0.003). The results suggest that humoral factors and substances released by damaged muscle may be responsible for lymphocyte activation, which may be involved in muscle recovery and repair.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Synergistetes is a novel bacterial phylum consisting of gram-negative anaerobes. Increasing lines of evidence demonstrate that this phylum is associated with periodontal diseases. This study aimed to compare the presence and levels of Synergistetes clusters A and B, in saliva of patients with chronic periodontitis (CP), generalized aggressive periodontitis (G-AgP) and non-periodontitis subjects, and investigate their correlation with clinical parameters. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Saliva was collected from patients with CP (n = 20), G-AgP (n = 21) and non-periodontitis subjects (n = 18). Full mouth clinical periodontal measurements were recorded. The numbers of Synergistetes cluster A and cluster B or the associated species Jonquetella anthropi were quantified by fluorescent in situ hybridization and microscopy. RESULTS: Synergistetes cluster A bacteria were detected more frequently, and at higher numbers and proportions in the two periodontitis groups, than the non-periodontitis control group. The prevalence was 27.7% in the control group, 85% in CP and 86% in G-AgP. Compared to the control group, the numbers were significantly higher by 12.5-fold in CP and 26.5-fold in G-AgP, whereas the difference between the two forms of periodontitis was not statistically significant. Within the total bacterial population, the proportion of this cluster was increased in CP and G-AgP compared to the control group, with the difference between the two forms of periodontitis being also significant. There was a positive correlation between the levels of Synergistetes cluster A in saliva and all full mouth clinical periodontal parameters. Nevertheless, Synergistetes cluster B bacteria and J. anthropi species were detected infrequently and at low levels in all the three subject groups. CONCLUSION: Synergistetes cluster A, but not cluster B, bacteria are found at higher prevalence, numbers and proportions in saliva from patients with periodontitis, than non-periodontitis subjects. These findings support the association of this cluster with periodontitis.

BACKGROUND: Phantom pain is a well known and extensively documented complication after limb amputation. Nearly all surgical disciplines have to deal with phantom symptoms related to different anatomical regions and organs but limited data is available about phantom eye pain (PEP) after enucleation. Only one pilot study is present in literature. It was the aim of this study to analyze a group of patients with a standardized surgical procedure of enucleation concerning the incidence of PEP and its relation to further preoperative and postoperative data. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A standardized questionnaire was sent to all enucleation patients with primary orbital implant performed between 1/1/1986 and 12/31/1995 at Münster University. Data of 94 patients could be analyzed with regard to PEP, perioperative pain symptoms and further ophthalmological and surgical data. RESULTS: 24 of 94 patients reported PEP after enucleation. The frequency of PEP was less than once per month in the majority of patients (71%). 2 of 24 patients suffered from PEP on more than 4 days/month. Perioperative pain symptoms (ocular pain [OP], preoperative and postoperative headache) were reported with a higher proportion (each p<0.0025) in patients with PEP compared to those not affected by PEP. All patients with a preoperative history of OP longer than 5 years and 75% of patients with OP longer than 12 months of pre-enucleation OP were affected by PEP. CONCLUSIONS: Phantom eye pain is present in nearly 1/4 of patients after enucleation and is significantly related to other perioperative pain symptoms.

RESUMO

This study presents data on the clinical characteristics and possible mechanisms of the phantom eye syndrome in 112 patients after removal of one eye. The prevalence of phantom eye pain was 26%, nonpainful phantom sensations 29%, and visual hallucinations 31%. Headaches and preoperative eye pain were associated with the presence of phantom experiences. These results suggest that pain is an important cofactor for the development of phantom eye phenomena.

Since chemotherapy is presently the primary strategy of malaria control in the world, and some malaria parasites are developing resistance to the commonly used antimalarial drugs, new antimalarial compounds are required. Therefore, it is important to test antimalarial activities of medicinal plant extracts which most herbalists claim to cure malaria. We evaluated the antimalarial activities of extracts of Albizia gummiffera, Aspilia mossambicensis, Melia azedar and Azadirahchta indica against laboratory adapted isolates of Plasmodium falciparum using an in vitro radioisotopic uptake technique. Chloroquine was used as a reference antimalarial drug. Al. gummifera had the highest antimalarial activity (mean fifty percent inhibitory concentration {IC(50)S} in ug/ml of test culture =3.5 +1.6SD, n=3) followed by As. mossambicensis (mean IC(50)=29.3+11.8SD, n=4) and Me. Azedarach (mean IC(50) =299.7+202.0SD, n=4). And lastly Az. Indica (mean IC(50)=349.9+213.1 SD, n=4). The antimalarial activities of the reference drug, chloroquine, was far much higher (mean IC(50)=0.065+0.057SD, n=)4). These findings show that Al. gummifera and As. mossambicensis plant extracts have potent antimalarial compounds. Phytochemical analyses should be done on these two plants to isolate the compound(s) containing he active principles(s).
