RESUMO

Global crises caused by the pandemic of COVID-19, since early 2020, can compromise the world commitment to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This study discusses critical aspects of the global pandemic for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). More precisely, we analyze how the new circumstances created by the pandemic have affected the interdependencies between SDGs. Following a synopsis of the current literature, we focus on effects regarding SDG3 (Health & Well-Being), SDG4 (Quality Education), SDG8 (Decent Work & Economic Growth), SDG12 (Consumption & Production) and SDG13 (Climate Action). Following a qualitative research approach, we based our analysis on moderated focus group discussions (FGD). Our observations reveal a unique pattern of interconnectedness between SDGs that can be related to COVID-19 consequences. Qualitative interpretations of focus group discussions also depict, that additional spillover effects can be obstacles for achieving SDG 5 (Gender Equality), SDG 9 (Infrastructure & Innovation) and SDG 10 (Reducing Inequalities), SDG 17 (partnerships for the goals), SDG 11 (sustainable cities). Therefore, we consider the interdependent implications and recent trends in international development related to sustainability as a useful framework in the post-pandemic recovery period.

AbstractObjective: Long-term psychodynamic psychotherapy for children aims not only at improving symptoms but also at changing the quality of life. To our knowledge, no studies exist to date that focused on both aspects. In this paper, we investigated changes in problem behavior and health-related quality of life based on long-term psychodynamic psychotherapy with children suffering from emotional and behavioral disorders. Method: We investigated 76 children in the treatment group and analyzed pre- and post-treatment symptoms. Furthermore, we compared the outcome data with a control group of 27 children of similar age and diagnoses who received no psychotherapy, both under routine care conditions. The children included in the study were treated on average for 66 sessions. Parent and adolescent ratings on the Achenbach Scales and the Quality of Life Inventory for Adolescents were compared before and after treatment. Results: We found a highly significant improvement of internalizing symptomatology based on parent ratings with a large effect. Different from prior investigations based on short-term psychodynamic psychotherapy we found changes in quality of life with large effects. Conclusion: These findings indicate that long-term psychodynamic treatment can improve life quality in children beyond symptom change.

OBJECTIVES: The discussion about the effectivity of psychodynamic psychotherapy is being renewed by recent meta-analyses. Although some well-designed studies have been presented, there is still a dearth of research in this field. METHODS: In a controlled prospective field study we investigated the outcome of outpatient psychodynamic psychotherapy in a pre-post design. This evaluation includes data from the symptom inventories VDS90, VDS30, and HEALTH for 90 patients with different mental disorders before therapy and after the regular end of therapy, compared to a waiting list control group. RESULTS: We found a significant improvement in symptoms, dysfunctional personality features, and quality of life. Rates of statistically and clinically significant improvement were markedly higher after therapy than in the waiting list condition. CONCLUSIONS: Psychodynamic psychotherapy shows an effect on symptoms, dysfunctional personality features, and quality of life.

QUESTION: The effectiveness of psychodynamic psychotherapy for children and adolescents has yet to be studied sufficiently in Germany. Because psychodynamic psychotherapy aims to reduce symptoms in both the short and long term - besides achieving other long-term goals - in this paper we present results focusing on whether symptoms and problem behavior can be improved within 25 h of outpatient psychodynamic psychotherapy taking place in a practice. Moreover, it addresses whether a positive change of life quality can be achieved in the same timeframe. METHOD: Thirty children and juveniles with emotional, behavioral, and adjustment disorders who had received 25 h of psychodynamic psychotherapy were investigated. Parental reports on the Child Behavior Checklist and parental and expert opinions on the DISYPS-KJ were compared before and after therapy. RESULTS: We found significant improvement on almost all measured CBCL scales, but not on the syndrome scales measured with the DISYPS. Predominantly medium-size effects were calculated. But parents did not report an improvement of general life quality of their children during the course of psychotherapy. CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicate that there is an effective reduction of childhood emotional and behavioral symptoms following psychodynamic psychotherapy. The measured timeframe, however, seems to be too short to ensure significant improvements in specific childhood disorders from both parental and expert perspectives.

Conventional linear and time-resolved spectroscopic techniques are often not appropriate to elucidate specific pigment-pigment interactions in light-harvesting pigment-protein complexes (LHCs). Nonlinear (laser-) spectroscopic techniques, including nonlinear polarization spectroscopy in the frequency domain (NLPF) as well as step-wise (resonant) and simultaneous (non-resonant) two-photon excitation spectroscopies may be advantageous in this regard. Nonlinear spectroscopies have been used to elucidate substructure(s) of very complex spectra, including analyses of strong excitonic couplings between chlorophylls and of interactions between (bacterio)chlorophylls and "optically dark" states of carotenoids in LHCs, including the major antenna complex of higher plants, LHC II. This article shortly reviews our previous study and outlines perspectives regarding the application of selected nonlinear laser-spectroscopic techniques to disentangle structure-function relationships in LHCs and other pigment-protein complexes.

Photosynthetically active pigments are usually organized into pigment-protein complexes. These include light-harvesting antenna complexes (LHCs) and reaction centers. Site energies of the bound pigments are determined by interactions with their environment, i.e., by pigment-protein as well as pigment-pigment interactions. Thus, resolution of spectral substructures of the pigment-protein complexes may provide valuable insight into structure-function relationships. By means of conventional (linear) and time-resolved spectroscopic techniques, however, it is often difficult to resolve the spectral substructures of complex pigment-protein assemblies. Nonlinear polarization spectroscopy in the frequency domain (NLPF) is shown to be a valuable technique in this regard. Based on initial experimental work with purple bacterial antenna complexes as well as model systems NLPF has been extended to analyse the substructure(s) of very complex spectra, including analyses of interactions between chlorophylls and "optically dark" states of carotenoids in LHCs. The paper reviews previous work and outlines perspectives regarding the application of NLPF spectroscopy to disentangle structure-function relationships in pigment-protein complexes.

Aggregation of photosynthetic light-harvesting complexes strongly influences their spectroscopic properties. Fluorescence yield and excited state lifetimes of the main light-harvesting complex (LHC II) of higher plants strongly depend on its aggregation state. Detergents are commonly used to solubilize membrane proteins and/or to circumvent their aggregation in aqueous environments. Nonlinear polarization spectroscopy in the frequency domain (NLPF) was performed with LHC II over a wide concentration range of the mild detergent n-dodecyl beta-D: -maltoside (beta-DM). Additionally, conventional absorption-, fluorescence- and circular dichroism-spectra were measured.The results indicate that: (i) conventional spectroscopic techniques are not well suited to investigate aggregation effects. NLPF provides a novel approach to overcome this problem: NLPF spectra display dramatic alterations upon even minor beta-DM concentration changes. (ii) Commonly used detergent concentrations (around or slightly above the critical micellar concentration) apparently do not lead to complete trimerization of LHC II. A long-wavelength species in the NLPF spectra (peaking at about 685 nm), indicative of residual aggregation, persists up to DM-concentrations of 0.06%. (iii) High-resolution NLPF spectra indicate the existence of a species with a considerably shortened excited state lifetime. (iv) No indication of denaturation was found even at the highest beta-DM concentrations used. (v) A specific change in interaction between certain chlorophyll(s) b and a xanthophyll molecule, probably neoxanthin, was detected upon aggregation as well as at higher beta-DM concentrations. The results are discussed with respect to the still elusive mechanism of nonradiative dissipation of excess excitation energy in the antenna system.

Peridinin-chlorophyll a-protein (PCP) is a unique antenna complex in dinoflagellates that employs peridinin (a carotenoid) as its main light-harvesting pigment. Strong excitonic interactions between peridinins, as well as between peridinins and chlorophylls (Chls) a, can be expected from the short intermolecular distances revealed by the crystal structure. Different experimental approaches of nonlinear polarization spectroscopy in the frequency domain (NLPF) were used to investigate the various interactions between pigments in PCP of Amphidinium carterae at room temperature. Lineshapes of NLPF spectra indicate strong excitonic interactions between the peridinin's optically allowed S(2) (1Bu(+)) states. A comprehensive subband analysis of the distinct NLPF spectral substructure in the peridinin region allows us to assign peridinin subbands to the two Chls a in PCP having different S(1)-state lifetimes. Peridinin subbands at 487, 501, and 535 nm were assigned to the longer-lived Chl, whereas a peridinin subband peaking at 515 nm was detected in both clusters. Certain peridinin(s), obviously corresponding to the subband centered at 487 nm, show(s) specific (possibly Coulombic?) interaction between the optically dark S(1)(2A(g)(-)) and/or intramolecular charge-transfer (ICT) state and S(1) of Chl a. The NLPF spectrum, hence, indicates that this peridinin state is approximately isoenergetic or slightly above S(1) of Chl a. A global subband analysis of absorption and NLPF spectra reveals that the Chl a Q(y)-band consists of two subbands (peaking at 669 and 675 nm and having different lifetimes), confirmed by NLPF spectra recorded at high pump intensities. At the highest applied pump intensities an additional band centered at S(1)/ICT transition of peridinin.

Occurrence of excitonic interactions in light-harvesting complex II (LHC II) was investigated by nonlinear polarization spectroscopy in the frequency domain (NLPF) at room temperature. NLPF spectra were obtained upon probing in the chlorophyll (Chl) a/b Soret region and pumping in the Q(y) region. The lowest energy Chl a absorbing at 678 nm is strongly excitonically coupled to Chl b.

CP29 (the lhcb4 gene product), a minor photosystem II antenna complex, binds six chlorophyll (Chl) a, two Chl b, and two to three xanthophyll molecules. The Chl a/b Q(y) absorption band substructure of CP29 (purified from spinach) was investigated by nonlinear polarization spectroscopy in the frequency domain (NLPF) at room temperature. A set of NLPF spectra was obtained at 11 probe wavelengths. Seven probe wavelengths were located in the Q(y) spectral region (between 630 and 690 nm) and four in the Soret band (between 450 and 485 nm). Evaluation of the experimental data within the framework of global analysis leads to the following conclusions: (i) The dominant Chl a absorption (with a maximum at 674 nm) splits into (at least) three subbands (centered at 660, 670, and 681.5 nm). (ii) In the Chl b region two subbands can be identified with maxima located at 640 and 646 nm. (iii) The lowest energy Q(y) transition (peaking at 681.5 nm) is assigned to a Chl a which only weakly interacts with other Chl aor b molecules by incoherent Förster-type excitation energy transfer. (iv) Pronounced excitonic interaction exists between certain Chl a and Chl b molecules, which most likely form a Chl a/b heterodimer. The subbands centered at 640 and 670 nm constitute a strongly coupled Chl a/b pair. The findings of the study indicate that the currently favored view of spectral heterogeneity in CP29 being due essentially to pigment-protein interactions has to be revised.

Manifestation and extent of excitonic interactions in the red Chl-absorption region (Q(y) band) of trimeric LHC-II were investigated using two complementary nonlinear laser-spectroscopic techniques. Nonlinear absorption of 120-fs pulses indicates an increased absorption cross section in the red wing of the Q(y) band as compared to monomeric Chl a in organic solution. Additionally, the dependence of a nonlinear polarization response on the pump-field intensity was investigated. This approach reveals that one emitting spectral form, characterized by a 2.3(+/-0.8)-fold larger dipole strength than monomeric Chl a, dominates the fluorescence spectrum of LHC-II. Considering available structural and spectroscopic data, these results can be consistently explained assuming the existence of an excitonically coupled dimer located at Chl-bindings sites a2 and b2 (referring to the original notation of W. Nühlbrandt, D.N. Wang, and Y. Fujiyoshi, Nature, 1994, 367:614-621), which must not necessarily correspond to Chls a and b). This fluorescent dimer, terminating the excitation energy-transfer chain of the LHC-II monomeric subunit, is discussed with respect to its relevance for intra- and inter-antenna excitation energy transfer.
