RESUMO
In four cases of retinoblastoma examined with the method of Golgi we have only found vessels and glial elements at different stages of differentiation. Moreover, in the areas containing typical rosettes, Golgi method revealed some isolately impregnated elements resembling photoreceptors in evolution. Within the retina abuting on the tumor were found only normal retinal nervous elements. Some nervous elements were found also in areas where the tumor tissue intermingled with infiltrated neighbouring retina.

Specular microscopic and histopathologic findings in the corneal endothelium were compared after the injection of liquid silicone into the anterior chamber of both eyes in 15 rabbits. The findings demonstrated serious damage to the endothelium in the area of contact of liquid silicone with the posterior surface of the cornea and disclosed some problems in the interpretation of specular microscopic findings. An abnormal endothelial mosaic can be probably found even in a zone of preserved intercellular borders or in a zone with a relief of the bases of extinct endothelial cells.

Several kinds of nerve cells in the vertebrate retina can be found in retinal layers other that to which they belong. The present paper discusses all such cells within the human retina, as the author was able to stain them selectively using different neurohistological methods.

The authors present a detailed report on the histological findings in the anterior and posterior segments in Wegener's granulomatosis. Histopathologically the granuloma is nonspecific, usually consisting of histiocytes and lymphocytes. There were no giant cells in the cellular infiltrations. The granulomas were mainly located perivascularly; in some locations they had central necrosis.

A series of retinas from 30 human embryos, ranging in total length from 10 to 40 mm (i.e., to the end of gestation month 2), were successfully stained by the Golgi method and then examined and compared with routinely stained specimens from pertinent stages. Two more series impregnated with other silver methods were used as controls. In the results we try to clarify some difficult points in the literature on the subject.

Following preliminary studies on human optic nerve head lesions in the aged, 109 optic nerve heads were examined to determine the frequency, localisation, and time of appearance of the two types of senile degenerative lesions described in these initial studies. Frequency curves are presented, and results discussed and compared with data reported in the published literature.

Axonal and myelin changes of the degenerative type were found in the extra-ocular muscles of 21 out of 23 diabetics of all ages (30--74 years). In all these 21 cases both axonal and myelin changes were observed; they did not correlate with the duration, degree of severity or treatment of diabetes. In 19 of the 23 cases (82.6%) nervous changes were accompanied by vascular changes. In 10 controls (50--80 years) nervous and vascular changes were of a slight degree. The findings of the alteration of peripheral nerve endings in the extra-ocular muscle corroborate and complete the description of the central nervous changes in diabetics with ophthalmoplegia given by several authors. We agree with Domínguez et al. that ophthalmoplegia may appear in the preclinical stage of diabetes and may be the first manifestation of the disease.

Sixteen uveal melanomas in celloidin sections and eight other fresh cases of melanoma were examined using different clinical and histological methods. A recession of the lateral border of the anterior chamber angle was found in most of them. The grade of this distortion varied from very deep to insignificant, but was apparent in most cases. Seven fresh cases were gonioscopically examined and some recession was seen in five of them.

Eleven human optic nerves from subjects in different decades ranging from the fifth to the ninth were investigated with the silver carbonate method to establish the pattern and frequency of age changes within the optic nerve head and their relationship with the glaucomatous excavation. It has been found that despite the occurrence of age degeneration at the same level of the cribriform lamina, there are definite anatomical differences as compared with glaucoma changes, especially regarding the distribution of axonal damage.
