RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Surgeons have a reputation for decisiveness and self-confidence, which suggests that they may tolerate uncertainty poorly and therefore be less capable than other doctors of experiencing clinical equipoise. Their 'typical' behaviour is characteristic of the stable extrovert personality and so they may prefer spontaneous clinical judgement over randomized trials. The aim of this study was to compare personality dimensions and tolerance of uncertainty among surgeons and hospital physicians, to determine whether differences in either property might help to explain the apparently poor performance of surgeons in conducting randomized controlled trials. METHODS: This was a postal questionnaire study of 1000 consultant general surgeons and 1000 consultant physicians. Respondents completed a short self-assessment of Eysenck personality dimensions, Budner's Intolerance of Ambiguity scale and a short questionnaire about attitudes to randomized trials. Correlation and multiple regression analyses were performed. RESULTS: The response rate was 36.5 per cent. Physicians were more likely to be women (P < 0.001) and had spent 1 more year in academic posts than surgeons (P < 0.030). Surgeons were significantly more extrovert (P < 0.001) and less neurotic (P < 0.001) than physicians. Surgeons were significantly more intolerant of uncertainty than physicians (P = 0.007). Multivariate analysis identified age (P < 0.030) and sex (P = 0.015) as independent predictors of intolerance of uncertainty. The attitudes of surgeons and physicians to randomized trials were no different. CONCLUSION: Surgeons are not prejudiced against randomized trials, but their intolerance of uncertainty may inhibit them from deciding that an individual patient is suitable for trial entry. If more surgeons were female, this difference between surgeons and physicians might disappear.

RESUMO

It has been suggested that hypnosis techniques may have the potential to enhance eyewitness memory in forensic investigations. However, laboratory research shows that increases in recall with hypnosis techniques are often associated with decreases in accuracy, false confidence in incorrect information, and increased suggestibility to leading questions and misleading post-event information. These problems limit the usefulness of hypnosis as an interviewing procedure. However, in practical investigations, many factors associated with hypnosis, apart from the hypnotic induction itself, might lead to memory enhancement compared with standard police interviews. For example, hypnotic interviewers, because of their psychological, clinical, and interpersonal skills, may be better interviewers than police officers. They may use effective interviewing strategies such as those associated with the "cognitive interview"; a procedure which has the potential to enhance recall by approximately 35% without the problems of memory distortion associated with hypnosis. It is concluded, therefore, that a cognitive interview procedure should be used in preference to hypnosis.

RESUMO

A scale was developed to test the hypotheses that stoicism would be more prevalent in British men (n = 30) than in British women (n = 32) and that stoicism would be related to negative attitudes toward the poor. It was also hypothesized that stoics would exhibit a weaker emotional reaction to stories that had emotive content. All three hypotheses were supported. There was evidence that the Stoicism Scale had internal consistency and some external validity.

RESUMO

Survey data from several countries indicate that many people believe that hypnosis may increase the accuracy of an eyewitness's memory; most experimental research, however, suggests that this belief is inaccurate. This study examined whether the belief could influence judgments of guilt and innocence in a simulated criminal trial. The results indicated that British undergraduates were more likely to find a male defendant guilty when told that the testimony against him had been elicited under hypnosis. Results concerning a nonhypnotic memory facilitation technique were found to be inconclusive, and the salience of hypnotically elicited testimony was ruled out as a contributory element.

RESUMO

13 hypnotically susceptible subjects were given a hypnotic induction procedure with suggestions to facilitate recognition of a target face shown 7 days earlier. Their accuracy was compared with that of 12 subjects in an untreated control condition. There was no support for the hypothesis that hypnosis improves facial recognition; indeed, there was evidence that hypnosis may serve to increase the number of false positive identifications.

RESUMO

A procedure was devised to test the hypothesis that the traditional measure of post-hypnotic amnesia, which involves determining the number of items recalled before and after a 'release' signal, may be significantly biased by compliance. One group of subjects (group B) was given an opportunity to 'own-up' to compliant behaviour before being tested for post-hypnotic amnesia. Another group (group A) was only given the opportunity to own-up after being tested for amnesia. Results indicated a very strong compliance effect, group A showed significantly more post-hypnotic amnesia than group B.
