RESUMO

Bones of the flightless sea duck (Chendytes lawi) from 14 archaeological sites along the California coast indicate that humans hunted the species for at least 8,000 years before it was driven to extinction. Direct (14)C dates on Chendytes bones show that the duck was exploited on the southern California islands as early as approximately 11,150-10,280 calendar years B.P., and on the mainland by at least 8,500 calendar years B.P. The youngest direct date of 2,720-2,350 calendar years B.P., combined with the absence of Chendytes bones from hundreds of late Holocene sites, suggests that the species was extinct by approximately 2,400 years ago. Although the extinction of Chendytes clearly resulted from human overhunting, its demise raises questions about the Pleistocene overkill model, which suggests that megafauna were driven to extinction in a blitzkrieg fashion by Native Americans approximately 13,000 years ago. That the extermination of Chendytes was so protracted and archaeologically visible suggests that, if the terminal Pleistocene megafauna extinctions were primarily the result of human exploitation, there should also be a long and readily detectable archaeological record of their demise. The brief window now attributed to the Clovis culture ( approximately 13,300-12,900 B.P.) seems inconsistent with an overhunting event.

RESUMO

In a previous report, we showed that nutritional status and especially serum albumin had great predictive value for death in chronic hemodialysis patients, whereas blood pressure did not. In the present study, we analyzed the causes of death in consideration of the relationship between serum albumin and blood pressure. A total of 1,243 Okinawan patients (719 males, 524 females) undergoing hemodialysis in January 1991 were followed up through the end of 1995. Three hundred forty-two of the patients died, 45 received transplants, and 12 were transferred by the end of the follow-up period. The total duration of observation was 5,110.3 patient-years. Blood pressure as well as clinical and laboratory variables were determined immediately prior to the first dialysis session in January 1991. The crude death rate was 40.0% when the diastolic blood pressure (DBP) <70 mm Hg, 35.0% at 70 to 79 mm Hg, 25.0% at 80 to 89 mm Hg, 25.0% at 90 to 99 mm Hg, and 13.0% at >100 mm Hg. The death rate showed an inverse correlation with DBP. DBP showed a significant positive correlation with serum albumin (r = 0.137, P < 0.001) and age (r = -0.325, P < 0.0001). The adjusted odds ratio (95% confidence interval) of death was 0.84 (0.71 to 0.99) with 10 mm Hg increments in DBP when the reference DBP was less than 69 mm Hg. Low DBP may be a manifestation of malnutrition and/or cardiovascular disease in chronic hemodialysis patients. Target DBP levels may be higher levels in chronic hemodialysis patients than the general population.

RESUMO

Parathyroidectomy (PTX) is one of the treatments of choice for secondary hyperparathyroidism in chronic dialysis patients. Due to the large increase in long-term dialysis patients, hyperparathyroidism is becoming a common clinical problem. Several studies on PTX have reported various surgical procedures, but limited information is available on the incidence and risk factors of the surgery. The Okinawa Dialysis Study (OKIDS) registry is a community-based dialysis registry. It covers the entire area of Okinawa from when the use of chronic dialysis began in 1971. By the end of 1990, a total of 1,986 chronic dialysis patients were registered and 128 of these had undergone PTX by the end of 1993. The cumulative incidence of PTX was 4.3 in DM and 15.2 in non-DM per 1,000 patient-years. About half of the PTX patients underwent the surgery within 10 years of dialysis. By logistic analysis, the risk of PTX was seen to increase significantly with the duration of dialysis, P < 0.0001. Other clinical variables such as sex, age at the start of dialysis and the presence of diabetes mellitus were not significant predictors of PTX. The probability of PTX increased linearly with the duration of dialysis (r = 0.83, p < 0.0001). After the introduction of active vitamin D in 1981, the probability of PTX was significantly decreased (p < 0.05) compared to the pre-vitamin D period ('71-'80). With prolongation of the duration of dialysis, the risk of PTX increased steadily and was estimated to be 10 percent in 10 years and 20 percent in 20 years. Other uremic factors determining a pathological transformation of parathyroid tissue from reactive to autonomous growth remained to be investigated.

RESUMO

A computer-controlled vibrotactile display against the abdomen was used to investigate recognition performance of Katakana characters as a function of 3 display modes. The superior performance (about 95% correct) is achieved when the letter is presented sequentially as if it were being written. The other two modes (the entire letter is presented at once, the letter is moved horizontally across the display) allow only 20 to 40% correct recognition.

RESUMO

Tactile sensitivity to shifts of a point stimulus was determined at the forehead for spatially filled (continuous) and spatially separated (discrete) stimulation. The minimal limen was between 12 and 30 mm/sec. for continuous stimulation and at a 200-msec. interstimulus interval for discrete stimulation. The continuous thresholds were always lower than the discrete thresholds at the examined time rates. Furthermore, the continuous thresholds were slightly higher for oblique directions than for both vertical and horizontal directions, while the discrete thresholds were quite low for both vertical and horizontal directions.

RESUMO

1. The Nagel anomaloscope, neutral points and dichromatic matches to a spectral green light identified a population of seventy red-green dichromats. 2. The anomaloscope settings allow the calculation of the relative action spectrum of the match at the wave-length of the red (645 nm) and green (535 nm) primaries. The distribution of this ratio is bimodal; there are two clusters with a gap of about 0-75 long units between. Among the thirty-eight deuteranopes there are wide differences in anomaloscope matches; similar differences appear among the thirty-two protanopes. 3. Retinal densitometry of the foveas of fifteen of the deuteranopes is compared and contrasted with measurements on trichromats. In the former, only one photolabile pigment is found in the red-green region of the spectrum; normals always have two. The view of Rushton (1965a) that deuteranopes have erythrolabe but no measurable chlorolabe is confirmed for each member of this group. 4. Simple deuteranomalous show two red-green cone pigments. The difference spectra of extreme deuteranomalous are very similar to those found in deuteranopia. 5. Individual differnce in kinetics (photosensitivity, time constant of regeneration) and in the density and lambdamax of the difference spectrum of erythrolabe in deuteranopia are appreciable; the reasons for these differences are not clear.
