RESUMO

PURPOSE: The aim of our work is to present clinical and histological data of the case of severe sympathetic ophthalmia (SO). Sympathetic ophthalmia is a rare, bilateral, non-necrotizing granulomatous panuveitis that follows penetrating injury to one eye. SO is a potentially blinding condition. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A 40-year-old man sustained a penetrating injury to his right eye. He refused to be treated surgically. A few days later, he developed bacterial endophthalmitis. After 5 months the patient came to our hospital with clinical manifestations suggesting SO. His right eye was removed. Unfortunately, despite the intensive pharmacological treatment the uveitis of the left eye intensified. RESULTS: Generalized uveitis with optic nerve oedema, secondary cataract and glaucoma resulted in total blindness. CONCLUSIONS: Although, SO is a rare disease, ophthalmologists should be aware of its devastating effect on vision.

RESUMO

The paper presents the coexistence of a nevus flammeus and basal cell carcinoma affecting the left upper lid of 61-year-old farmer with Sturge-Weber syndrome. The occurrence of basal cell carcinoma in nevus flammeus is extremely rare. The etiology of the malignancy in this situation is unknown. It is difficult to diagnose neoplastic transformations that could arise in the nevus flammeus. Radiotherapy followed by complete surgical excision were used as a treatment in the described patient.

RESUMO

The eye signs of sarcoidosis may be observed in patients with no evidence of any other symptoms. In this paper a patient with diagnosis of sarcoidosis was presented. The proper diagnosis and treatment were possible after results of conjunctival biopsy. Conjunctival biopsy could be a useful method in the diagnosis of many systemic diseases, including sarcoidosis.

RESUMO

UNLABELLED: The aim of this paper is to describe the prospective 10-year follow-up study of prognostic value of p53 protein accumulation in cancer cells in relation to the localisation of tumour in colorectum. METHODS: The p53 protein accumulation has been assessed immunohistochemically in tumour tissue samples obtained from 80 selected sporadic colorectal cancer patients. RESULTS: p53 protein accumulation was detected more often in rectum than in colon tumours. Lower survival rates were observed in patients with p53 protein accumulation in cancer cells independent of primary tumour site. Significantly lower cumulative survival rate was detected in the group of patients with left-sided colon cancer. The p53 protein accumulation was an independent prognostic factor in the left-sided colon tumours. CONCLUSIONS: The right-sided colon tumours may be developed in p53-independent manner and p53 protein accumulation in cancer cells has prognostic value only in the left-sided colorectal tumours.
