RESUMO

The demands of the modern office are thought to contribute to the development of musculoskeletal disorders. For upper body and lower back disorders, these effects are hypothesized to be mediated by psychological strain. A study of 936 employees from 22 call centers supports this hypothesis. Using logistic regression and structural equation modeling, the authors found that the relationship of workload to upper body and lower back musculoskeletal disorders was largely accounted for by job-related strain. This mediating effect was less evident for arm disorders. Contrary to expectation, job autonomy had neither a direct nor a moderating effect on any musculoskeletal disorder.

RESUMO

This article examines the proposition that the traditional scoring method of the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ) underestimates the number of respondents classified as "cases." A revised "chronic" scoring method (the CGHQ) is used and demonstrates superior construct validity and greater sensitivity. A comparison of the CGHQ and GHQ also shows the CGHQ to be a superior criterion measure. These claims are demonstrated by survey data gathered from 3 occupational samples (Ns=11,637, 2,253, and 2,124). Results show that the CGHQ is more appropriate as a screening instrument for psychological morbidity. Tests of construct validity also favor the CGHQ with only a slight advantage for predictive validity in terms of variance explained. The more desirable statistical properties of the CGHQ result in a reduction of significant interaction terms and are strongly recommended in future studies as a means of controlling Type I errors when tests of moderation are examined.

RESUMO

The relationship between organizational networks and employees' affect was examined in 2 organizations. In Study 1, social network analysis of work ties and job-related affect for 259 employees showed that affect converged within work interaction groups. Similarity of affect between employees depended on the presence of work ties and structural equivalence. Affect was also related to the size and density of employees' work networks. Study 2 used a 10-week diary study of 31 employees to examine a merger of 2 organizational divisions and found that negative changes in employees' affect were related to having fewer cross-divisional ties and to experiencing greater reductions in network density. The findings suggest that affect permeates through and is shaped by organizational networks.

RESUMO

The literature has ignored the fact that the demand-control (DC) and demand-control-support (DCS) models of stress are about jobs and not individuals' perceptions of their jobs. Using multilevel modeling, the authors report results of individual- and job-level analyses from a study of over 6,700 people in 81 different jobs. Support for additive versions of the models came when individuals were the unit of analysis. DC and DCS models are only helpful for understanding the effects of individual perceptions of jobs and their relationship to psychological states. When job perceptions are aggregated and their relationship to the collective experience of jobholders is assessed, the models prove of little value. Role set may be a better unit of analysis.

RESUMO

The aims of this study were to examine the impact of psychological distress on absence from work; to compare psychological distress and job satisfaction as predictors of absence; and to compare the relative effects of 2 components of psychological distress, depression and anxiety, on absence. Organizational records of absence over a 3-year period were obtained for 323 health service staff in the United Kingdom, who also completed self-report measures of psychological distress and job satisfaction at the beginning of the study and 2 years later. Psychological distress, particularly depression, was found to predict absence, with higher levels of distress predicting a greater number of days and number of times absent. Job satisfaction and psychological distress independently predicted levels of absence. The psychological distress-absence relationship was not moderated by demographic variables.

RESUMO

Direct effect, mediated, and moderated models of the relationship among work characteristics (job control, job demands), learning-related outcomes (skill utilization, self-efficacy), and strain (anxiety, depression) were compared. Three independent samples of call center employees were used, 2 cross-sectional (Ns = 427 and 203) and 1 longitudinal (N = 144). Initial analysis of the cross-sectional samples using structural equation modeling revealed that mediated models provided the best fit to the data. Skill utilization mediated the effect of control on depression, and depression partially mediated the effect of control on skill utilization. Longitudinal hierarchical regression analysis confirmed these findings. Results indicate that, in this occupational context, learning reduces strain, strain inhibits learning, and job control is an important precursor of both these relationships.
