BACKGROUND: Exertional heatstroke (EHS), a fatal illness, pronounces multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) and high mortality rate. Currently, no ideal factor prognoses EHS. Decreased monocyte human leukocyte-DR antigen (mHLA-DR) has been observed in critically ill individuals, particularly in those with sepsis. While most research focus on the pro-inflammatory response exploration in EHS, there are few studies related to immunosuppression, and no report targeted on mHLA-DR in EHS. The present study tried to explore the prognostic value of mHLA-DR levels in EHS patients. METHODS: This was a single-center retrospective study. Clinical data of EHS patients admitted to the intensive care unit of the General Hospital of Southern Theatre Command between January 1, 2008, and December 31, 2020, were recorded and analyzed. RESULTS: Seventy patients with 54 survivors and 16 nonsurvivors were ultimately enrolled. Levels of mHLA-DR in the nonsurvivors (41.8% [38.1-68.1]%) were significantly lower than those in the survivors (83.1% [67.6-89.4]%, p < 0.001). Multivariate logistic regression indicated that mHLA-DR (odds ratio [OR] = 0.939; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.892-0.988; p = 0.016) and Glasgow coma scale (GCS) scores (OR = 0.726; 95% CI: 0.591-0.892; p = 0.002) were independent risk factors related with in-hospital mortality rate in EHS. A nomogram incorporated mHLA-DR with GCS demonstrated excellent discrimination and calibration abilities. Compared to the traditional scoring systems, the prediction model incorporated mHLA-DR with GCS had the highest area under the curve (0.947, 95% CI: [0.865-0.986]) and Youden index (0.8333), with sensitivity of 100% and specificity of 83.33%, and a greater clinical net benefit. CONCLUSION: Patients with EHS were at a risk of early experiencing decreased mHLA-DR early. A nomogram based on mHLA-DR with GCS was developed to facilitate early identification and timely treatment of individuals with potentially poor prognosis.

BACKGROUND: Exertional heatstroke (EHS) is a life-threatening disease without ideal prognostic markers for predicting hospital mortality. METHODS: This is a single-center retrospective study. Clinical data from EHS patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the General Hospital of Southern Theatre Command between January 1, 2008, and December 31, 2020, were recorded and analyzed. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression were used to identify the factors for mortality. The prediction model was developed with the prognostic markers, and a nomogram was established. RESULTS: The study ultimately enrolled 156 patients, and 15 (9.6%) of patients died before discharge. The lymphocyte count (Lym) and percentage (Lym%) were significantly lower in non-survivors (P<0.05). The univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses indicated that Lym% at the third day of admission (Lym% D3) (OR=0.609, 95%CI: 0.454-0.816) and hematocrit (HCT) (OR=0.908, 95%CI: 0.834-0.988) were independent protective factors for hospital mortality. A nomogram incorporating Lym% D3 with HCT was developed and demonstrated good discrimination and calibration ability. The comparison between the prediction model and scoring systems revealed that the prediction model had the largest area under the curve (AUC) (0.948, 95%CI: 0.900-0.977), with 100.00% sensitivity and 83.69% specificity, and a greater clinical net benefit. CONCLUSION: Severe EHS patients had a higher risk of experiencing prolonged lymphopenia. A nomogram based on Lym% D3 and HCT was developed to facilitate early identification and timely treatment of patients with potentially unfavorable prognoses.

Insights into the relationship between the crystal structure and activity of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are meaningful to investigate the potential properties of pristine MOFs for targeted catalytic reactions. Herein, we develop a high-efficiency method for boosting the oxidative desulfurization (ODS) activity of Ti-MOF in the presence of H+. The ODS activity of pristine Ti-MOF prepared via a solvothermal approach is very poor at a low reaction temperature but can be enhanced in the presence of H+. Ti-MOF in the presence of H+ shows ultrahigh ODS activity that can eliminate 1000 ppm sulfur after 7 min at 30 °C with no catalytic activity loss after recycling 11 times. The turnover frequency value reaches 12.4 h-1 at 30 °C, surpassing all the previously reported Ti-MOFs as ODS catalysts even at high temperatures. Characterization and quenching experimental results indicate that more uncoordinated Ti sites can be formed from slight damage to the structure of Ti-MOF during the catalytic reaction, and such exposed Ti sites can easily react with H+ and H2O2 to form Ti-hydroperoxo active species that determine the upgradation of ODS activity. This work provides a significant way to upgrade the catalytic activity of pristine Ti-MOFs for future application.

BACKGROUND Coma has been considered as a valuable symptom of heatstroke. This study aimed to evaluate the role of the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) as an indicator of prognosis of patients with heatstroke. MATERIAL AND METHODS From Jan 1st, 2013 to Dec 31st, 2020, the clinical courses of 257 heatstroke patients from 3 medical centers in Guangdong, China, were observed. Diagnosis of heatstroke was made according to Expert Consensus in China. GCSs were calculated on the 1st, 3rd, and 5th days after admission to intensive care units (ICUs). GCS £8, as a coma criterion, was employed to predict the outcomes. RESULTS Seventy-five patients (29.18%) were comatose at admission. Twenty-seven (10.50%) patients, including 24 (24/75, 32.00%) coma patients and 3 (3/182,1.65%) non-coma patients died during ICU stay (P<0.0001). Patients with GCS ≤8 had a 2-fold higher risk of death as compared with those with GCS >8. The area under curves (AUCs) of GCSs on the 1st, 3rd, and 5th days to predict mortality were 0.81 (0.70-0.91), 0.91 (0.84-0.98), and 0.91 (0.82-0.99), respectively. Each additional 1 year of age, 1/min of respiratory rate (RR), and 1% of hematocrit (HCT) increased the risk of death of coma patients by 3%, 6%, and 4%, respectively (all P≤0.05). Patients with improving GCSs had lower mortality rates than non-improving patients (5.71% vs 55.00%, P<0.0001) within 5 days after admission. CONCLUSIONS GCS ≤8 at admission predicted worse outcomes in heatstroke patients, which possibly enhanced the risks of death for other factors, including age, RR, and HCT.

Functionalized metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been used in a wide range of applications. Although the development of functionalized MOFs with plentiful open metal sites (defects) provides an avenue for targeted reactions, creating such defects remains challenging. Herein, a UiO-type MOF with hierarchical porosity and plentiful Zr-OH/OH2 sites (capping 35% Zr coordination sites) was synthesized within 40 min by a solid-phase synthesis route without the use of solvent and template. The optimal sample converted 5.7 mmol benzaldehyde to (dimethoxymethyl)benzene within 2 min at 25 °C. The turnover frequency number and activity per unit mass reached 2380 h-1 and 8568 mmol g-1 h-1, respectively, outperforming all previously reported catalysts at room temperature. This excellent catalytic activity was correlated with the defect density in functionalized UiO-66(Zr) and the accessibility of plentiful Zr-OH/OH2 sites as acid sites.

Heatstroke (HS), a severe condition, can develop multiple organ dysfunction syndrome and death. However, at present, no early reliable index exists for risk stratification and prognosis. von Willebrand factor (vWF), a marker of vascular endothelial injury, is a key regulatory target of inflammation and coagulation, which is closely associated with the pathogenesis of HS. vWF was reported as a prognostic marker in several infectious and noninfectious severe illness such as COVID-19, sepsis, and trauma. Although early increased level of vWF is seen in HS, the relationship between vWF and mortality is to be elucidated. Clinical data of patients with HS in a tertiary hospital were recorded and analyzed. It was shown that plasma vWF concentrations at admission were significantly increased in the nonsurvivors (351% ± 105%) compared with survivors (278% ± 104%, p = 0.021). After multivariate logistic regression analysis it was shown that vWF (odds ratio [OR] = 1.010; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.002-1.18; p = 0.017), hemoglobin (Hb) (OR = 0.954; 95% CI, 0.931-0.979; p < 0.001), and hematocrit (HCT) in blood (OR = 0.859; 95% CI, 0.790-0.934; p < 0.001) were independent factors of in-hospital mortality in HS. The nomogram based on vWF and Hb was constructed in patients with HS. The area under curve under the receiver operating characteristic of this prediction model was 0.860 (95% CI, 0.773-0.923) and cutoff was 0.15, with Youden index 0.5840, which were not significantly different to sequential organ failure assessment (p = 0.0644), Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II (APACHE II) (p = 0.7976), and systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) scores (p = 0.3274). The prediction model that integrated vWF and Hb showed a better predicting efficiency than single variable, and a higher specificity (81.48%) than APACHE II (72.84%) and SIRS (72.84%) scores. In summary, vWF, as an independent risk factor for in-hospital mortality, combined with Hb, could effectively prognosis the mortality in HS patients at early stage.

Creation of rich open metal sites (defect) on the nodes of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is an efficient approach to enhance their catalytic performance in heterogeneous reactions; however, direct generation of such defects remains challenging. In this contribution, we developed an in situ green route for rapid fabrication of defective MOF-808(Zr) with rich Zr-OH/OH2 sites (occupying 25% Zr coordination sites) and hierarchical porosity without the assistance of formic acid and solvent. The optimal MOF-808(Zr) not only displayed superior activity in oxidative desulfurization (ODS) for removing 1000 ppm sulfur at ambient temperature within 20 min but also could convert 3.8 mmol of benzaldehyde to (dimethoxymethyl)benzene within 90 s at 30 °C. The turnover frequencies reached 45.4 h-1 for ODS and 3451 h-1 for acetalization, outperforming the most reported MOF-based catalysts. Theoretical calculation and experimental results show that the formed Zr-OH/OH2 can react with H2O2 to generate peroxo-zirconium species, which readily oxidize the sulfur compound. Our work provides a new approach to the synthesis of defect-rich MOF-808(Zr) with the accessibility of active sites for target reactions.

Microbial electrosynthesis (MES) and other bioprocesses such as syngas fermentation developed for energy storage and the conversion of carbon dioxide into valuable chemicals often employs acetogens as microbial catalysts. Acetogens are sensitive to molecular oxygen, which means that bioproduction reactors must be maintained under strict anaerobic conditions. This requirement increases cost and does not eliminate the possibility of O2 leakage. For MES, the risk is even greater since the system generates O2 when water splitting is the anodic reaction. Here, we show that O2 from the anode of a MES reactor diffuses into the cathode chamber where strict anaerobes reduce CO2. To overcome this drawback, a stepwise adaptive laboratory evolution (ALE) strategy is used to develop the O2 tolerance of the acetogen Sporomusa ovata. Two heavily-mutated S. ovata strains growing well autotrophically in the presence of 0.5 to 5% O2 were obtained. The adapted strains were more performant in the MES system than the wild type converting electrical energy and CO2 into acetate 1.5 fold faster. This study shows that the O2 tolerance of acetogens can be increased, which leads to improvement of the performance and robustness of energy-storage bioprocesses such as MES where O2 is an inhibitor.

Poor recognition of other-race faces is ubiquitous around the world. We resolve a longstanding contradiction in the literature concerning whether interracial social contact improves the other-race effect. For the first time, we measure the age at which contact was experienced. Taking advantage of unusual demographics allowing dissociation of childhood from adult contact, results show sufficient childhood contact eliminated poor other-race recognition altogether (confirming inter-country adoption studies). Critically, however, the developmental window for easy acquisition of other-race faces closed by approximately 12 years of age and social contact as an adult - even over several years and involving many other-race friends - produced no improvement. Theoretically, this pattern of developmental change in plasticity mirrors that found in language, suggesting a shared origin grounded in the functional importance of both skills to social communication. Practically, results imply that, where parents wish to ensure their offspring develop the perceptual skills needed to recognise other-race people easily, childhood experience should be encouraged: just as an English-speaking person who moves to France as a child (but not an adult) can easily become a native speaker of French, we can easily become "native recognisers" of other-race faces via natural social exposure obtained in childhood, but not later.

Microbial electrosynthesis is a bioprocess where microbes reduce CO2 into multicarbon chemicals with electrons derived from the cathode of a bioelectrochemical reactor. Developing a highly productive microbial electrosynthesis reactor requires excellent electrical connection between the electrochemical setup, the cathode, and the microbes. Copper is a highly conductive cathode material widely employed in electrochemical apparatuses. However, the antimicrobial properties of copper limit its usage for bioelectrochemistry. Here, biocompatible reduced graphene oxide coated on copper foam is synthesized as a cathode material for the microbial electrosynthesis of acetate from CO2. Dense and electroactive Sporomusa ovata biofilms form on the surface of reduced graphene oxide-coated copper foam electrodes while only scattered and damaged cells cover uncoated copper electrodes. Besides the formation of metabolically-active biofilms, acetate production rate from CO2 is 21.3 and 43.5-fold higher with this novel composite cathode compared with an uncoated copper foam cathode and a reversed cathode made of reduced graphene oxide foam coated with copper, respectively. The results demonstrate that reduced graphene oxide can be employed as a biocompatible and conductive buffer between microbes and bactericidal electrode materials with excellent electrochemical property to enable highly performant microbial electrosynthesis.

The Cambridge Face Memory Test (CFMT) is widely accepted as providing a valid and reliable tool in diagnosing prosopagnosia (inability to recognize people's faces). Previously, large-sample norms have been available only for Caucasian-face versions, suitable for diagnosis in Caucasian observers. These are invalid for observers of different races due to potentially severe other-race effects. Here, we provide large-sample norms (N = 306) for East Asian observers on an Asian-face version (CFMT-Chinese). We also demonstrate methodological suitability of the CFMT-Chinese for prosopagnosia diagnosis (high internal reliability, approximately normal distribution, norm-score range sufficiently far above chance). Additional findings were a female advantage on mean performance, plus a difference between participants living in the East (China) or the West (international students, second-generation children of immigrants), which we suggest might reflect personality differences associated with willingness to emigrate. Finally, we demonstrate suitability of the CFMT-Chinese for individual differences studies that use correlations within the normal range.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between NK cell count/activity and acute graft-versus-host disease (aGVHD) in patients receiving allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT). METHODS: A total of 26 patients who had undergone allo-HSCT from January to July 2015 were enrolled in this study. The NK cell count/activity in the peripheral blood of recipients on day 30 after allo-HSCT were monitored by using 4-color flow cytometry. The incidence of aGVHD in patients was evaluated by clinical manifestation combinating with related pathologic indicators, and the relationship between NK cell count/activity and aGVHD were analyzed. RESULTS: In the aGVHD group and the no-aGVHD group, the NK cell count and activity on days 30 after allo-HSCT were 655±216 cells/µl vs 1169±372 cells/µl(P=0.002) and 7.3±3.6% vs 9.0±3.6% (P=0.008). In the II-IV grade aGVHD group and the 0-I grade aGVHD group, the NK cell count/activity were 617±220 cells/µl vs 1081±399 cells/µl (P=0.001) and 4.2±1.7% vs 8.3±3.5%(P=0.001). As compared with the 0-I grade aGVHD group, patients in the II-IV grade aGVHD group had higher relapse rate (57% vs 5%)(P=0.010) , lower 1-year progression-free survival(PFS) rate (43% vs 84%)(P=0.010). CONCLUSION: NK cell count/activity on day 30 after allo-HSCT were closely relates with aGVHD, which may be a potential marker for aGVHD and can provide a new target for aGVHD therapy.

We report the existence of a previously undescribed group of people, namely individuals who are so poor at recognition of other-race faces that they meet criteria for clinical-level impairment (i.e., they are "face-blind" for other-race faces). Testing 550 participants, and using the well-validated Cambridge Face Memory Test for diagnosing face blindness, results show the rate of other-race face blindness to be nontrivial, specifically 8.1% of Caucasians and Asians raised in majority own-race countries. Results also show risk factors for other-race face blindness to include: a lack of interracial contact; and being at the lower end of the normal range of general face recognition ability (i.e., even for own-race faces); but not applying less individuating effort to other-race than own-race faces. Findings provide a potential resolution of contradictory evidence concerning the importance of the other-race effect (ORE), by explaining how it is possible for the mean ORE to be modest in size (suggesting a genuine but minor problem), and simultaneously for individuals to suffer major functional consequences in the real world (e.g., eyewitness misidentification of other-race offenders leading to wrongful imprisonment). Findings imply that, in legal settings, evaluating an eyewitness's chance of having made an other-race misidentification requires information about the underlying face recognition abilities of the individual witness. Additionally, analogy with prosopagnosia (inability to recognize even own-race faces) suggests everyday social interactions with other-race people, such as those between colleagues in the workplace, will be seriously impacted by the ORE in some people. Competing approaches to the other-race effect (ORE) see its primary cause as either a lack of motivation to individuate social outgroup members, or a lack of perceptual experience with other-race faces. Here, we argue that the evidence supporting the social-motivational approach derives from a particular cultural setting: a high socio-economic status group (typically US Whites) looking at the faces of a lower status group (US Blacks) with whom observers typically have at least moderate perceptual experience. In contrast, we test motivation-to-individuate instructions across five studies covering an extremely wide range of perceptual experience, in a cultural setting of more equal socio-economic status, namely Asian and Caucasian participants (N = 480) tested on Asian and Caucasian faces. We find no social-motivational component at all to the ORE, specifically: no reduction in the ORE with motivation instructions, including for novel images of the faces, and at all experience levels; no increase in correlation between own- and other-race face recognition, implying no increase in shared processes; and greater (not the predicted less) effort applied to distinguishing other-race faces than own-race faces under normal ("no instructions") conditions. Instead, the ORE was predicted by level of contact with the other-race. Our results reject both pure social-motivational theories and also the recent Categorization-Individuation model of Hugenberg, Young, Bernstein, and Sacco (2010). We propose a new dual-route approach to the ORE, in which there are two causes of the ORE-lack of motivation, and lack of experience--that contribute differently across varying world locations and cultural settings.

It is commonly held that implicit learning is based largely on familiarity. It is also commonly held that familiarity is not affected by intentions. It follows that people should not be able to use familiarity to distinguish strings from two different implicitly learned grammars. In two experiments, subjects were trained on two grammars and then asked to endorse strings from only one of the grammars. Subjects also rated how familiar each string felt and reported whether or not they used familiarity to make their grammaticality judgment. We found subjects could endorse the strings of just one grammar and ignore the strings from the other. Importantly, when subjects said they were using familiarity, the rated familiarity for test strings consistent with their chosen grammar was greater than that for strings from the other grammar. Familiarity, subjectively defined, is sensitive to intentions and can play a key role in strategic control.
