RESUMO

The regulation of seed development is critical for determining crop yield. Auxins are vital phytohormones that play roles in various aspects of plant growth and development. However, its role in amino acid biosynthesis and metabolism in seeds is not fully understood. In this study, we identified a mutant with small seeds through forward genetic screening in Medicago truncatula. The mutated gene encodes MtPIN4, an ortholog of PIN1. Using molecular approaches and integrative omics analyses, we discovered that auxin and amino acid content significantly decreased in mtpin4 seeds, highlighting the role of MtPIN4-mediated auxin distribution in amino acid biosynthesis and metabolism. Furthermore, genetic analysis revealed that the three orthologs of PIN1 have specific and overlapping functions in various developmental processes in M. truncatula. Our findings emphasize the significance of MtPIN4 in seed development and offer insights into the molecular mechanisms governing the regulation of seed size in crops. This knowledge could be applied to enhance crop quality by targeted manipulation of seed protein regulatory pathways.

RESUMO

Rapid identification of pathogens is critical for early and appropriate treatment of bloodstream infections. The various culture-independent assays that have been developed often have long turnaround times, low sensitivity and narrow pathogen coverage. Here, we propose a new multiplex PCR assay, MeltArray, which uses intact microbial cells as the source of genomic DNA (gDNA). The successive steps of the MeltArray assay, including selective lysis of human cells, microbial cell sedimentation, microbial cellular DNA extraction, target-specific pre-amplification and multiplex PCR detection, allowed the detection of 35 major bloodstream infectious pathogens in whole blood within 5.5 h. The limits of detection varied depending on the pathogen and ranged from 1 to 5 CFU/mL. Of 443 blood culture samples, including 373 positive blood culture samples and 70 negative blood culture samples, the MeltArray assay showed a sensitivity of 93.8% (350/373, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 90.7%-96.0%), specificity of 98.6% (69/70, 95% CI = 91.2%-99.9%), positive predictive value of 99.7% (95% CI = 98.1%-99.9%), and negative predictive value of 75.0% (95% CI = 64.7%-83.2%). The MeltArray detection results of 16 samples differed from MALDI-TOF and were confirmed by Sanger sequencing. Further testing of 110 whole blood samples from patients with suspected bloodstream infections using blood culture results revealed that the MeltArray assay had a clinical sensitivity of 100% (9/9, 95% CI = 62.8%-100.0%), clinical specificity of 74.5% (70/94, 95% CI = 64.2%-82.7%), positive predictive value of 27.3% (95% CI = 13.9%-45.8%), and negative predictive value of 100.0% (95% CI = 93.5%-100.0%). Compared with metagenomic next-generation sequencing, the MeltArray assay displayed a positive agreement of 85.7% (6/7, 95% CI = 42.0%-99.2%) and negative agreement of 100.0% (4/4, 95% CI = 39.6%-100.0%). We conclude that the MeltArray assay can be used as a rapid and reliable tool for direct identification of pathogens in bloodstream infections.

RESUMO

ß-Glucosidase is a biological macromolecule that catalyzes the hydrolysis of various glycosides and oligosaccharides. It may also be used to catalyze the synthesis of glycosides under suitable conditions. Carrier-bound ß-glucosidase can enhance the enzymatic activity in the synthesis of glycosides in organic solvent solutions, although the molecular mechanism regulating activity is yet unknown. This study investigated the impact of utilizing montmorillonite (Mmt), attapulgite (Attp), and kaolinite (Kao) as carriers on the activity of ß-glucosidase from Prunus dulcis (PdBg). When Attp was used as carriers, the molecular dynamic (MD) simulations found the distance between pNPG and the active site residues E183 and E387 was minimally impacted by the adsorptions, hence PdBg maintained about 81.3 ± 0.89 % of its native activity. Out of the three clay minerals, the relative activity of PdBg loaded on Mmt was the lowest because of the highest electrostatic energy. The substrate channel of PdBg on Kao is directed towards the surface, limiting the accessibility of substrates. Secondary structure and conformation studies revealed that the conformational stability of PdBg in solvent solutions was enhanced by coupling to Attp. Unlike dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) and 1,2-dimethoxyethane (DME), tert-butanol (t-BA) did not penetrate into the active site of PdBg interfering with its binding to the substrate. The maximum yield of n-octyl-ß-glucoside (OGP) synthesis catalyzed by Attp-immobilized PdBg reached 48.3 %.

RESUMO

Gastric cancer stem cells (GCSCs) are strongly associated with the refractory characteristics of gastric cancer, including drug resistance, recurrence, and metastasis. The prognosis for advanced gastric cancer patients treated with multimodal therapy after surgery remains discouraging. GCSCs hold promise as therapeutic targets for GC patients. We obtained 26 sets of stem cell-related genes from the StemChecker database. The Consensus clustering algorithm was employed to discern three distinct stemness subtypes. Prognostic outcomes, components of the tumor microenvironment (TME), and responses to therapies were compared among these subtypes. Following this, a stemness-risk model was formulated using weighted gene correlation network analysis (WGCNA), alongside Cox regression and random survival forest analyses. The C2 subtype predominantly showed enrichment in negative prognostic CSC gene sets and demonstrated an immunosuppressive TME. This specific subtype exhibited minimal responsiveness to immunotherapies and demonstrated reduced sensitivity to drugs. Four pivotal genes were integrated into the construction of the stemness model. Gastric cancer patients with higher stemness-risk scores demonstrated poorer prognoses, a greater presence of immunosuppressive components in TME, and lower rates of treatment response. Subset analysis indicated that only the low-stemness risk subtype derives benefit from 5-fluorouracil-based adjuvant chemotherapy. The model's effectiveness in immunotherapeutic prediction was further validated in the PRJEB25780 cohort. Our study categorized gastric cancer patients into three stemness subtypes, each demonstrating distinct prognoses, components of TME infiltration, and varying sensitivity or resistance to standard chemotherapy or targeted therapy. We propose that the stemness risk model may help the development of well-grounded treatment recommendations and prognostic assessments.

RESUMO

Recently, supershear Rayleigh waves (SRWs) have been proposed to characterize the biomechanical properties of soft tissues. The SRWs propagate along the surface of the medium, unlike surface Rayleigh waves, SRWs propagate faster than bulk shear waves. However, their behavior and application in biological tissues is still elusive. In brain tissue elastography, shear waves combined with magnetic resonance elastography or ultrasound elastography are generally used to quantify the shear modulus, but high spatial resolution elasticity assessment in 10 µm scale is still improving. Here, we develop an air-coupled ultrasonic transducer for noncontact excitation of SRWs and Rayleigh waves in brain tissue, use optical coherent elastography (OCE) to detect, and reconstruct the SRW propagation process; in combing with a derived theoretical model of SRWs on a free boundary surface, we quantify the shear modulus of brain tissue with high spatial resolution. We first complete validation experiments using a homogeneous isotropic agar phantom, and the experimental results clearly show the SRW is 1.9649 times faster than the bulk shear waves. Furthermore, the propagation velocity of SRWs in both the frontal and parietal lobe regions of the brain is all 1.87 times faster than the bulk shear wave velocity. Finally, we evaluated the anisotropy in different brain regions, and the medulla oblongata region had the highest anisotropy index. Our study shows that the OCE system using the SRW model is a new potential approach for high-resolution assessment of the biomechanical properties of brain tissue.

RESUMO

High-resolution quantification of heterogeneous brain biomechanical properties has long been an important topic. Longitudinal shear waves (LSWs) can be used to assess the longitudinal Young's modulus, but contact excitation methods have been used in most previous studies. We propose an air-coupled ultrasound transducer-based optical coherence elastography (AcUT-OCE) technique for noncontact excitation and detection of LSWs in samples and assessment of the nonuniformity of the brain's biomechanical properties. The air-coupled ultrasonic transducer (AcUT) for noncontact excitation of LSWs in the sample has a center frequency of 250 kHz. Phase-resolved Doppler optical coherence tomography (OCT) was used to image and reconstruct the propagation behavior of LSWs and surface ultrasound waves at high resolution. An agar phantom model was used to verify the feasibility of the experimental protocol, and experiments with ex vivo porcine brain samples were used to assess the nonuniformity of the brain biomechanical properties. LSWs with velocities of 0.83 ± 0.11 m/s were successfully excited in the agar phantom model. The perivascular elastography results in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) of the ex vivo porcine brains showed that the Young's modulus was significantly higher in the longitudinal and transverse directions on the left side of the cerebral vessels than on the right side and that the Young's modulus of the PFC decreased with increasing depth. The AcUT-OCE technique, as a new scheme for LSW applications in in vivo elastography, can be used for noncontact excitation of LSWs in brain tissue and high-resolution detection of heterogeneous brain biomechanical properties.

RESUMO

In this study, 86 new seco-lupane triterpenoid derivatives were designed, synthesized, and characterized, and their protective activities against ischemia-reperfusion injury were investigated in vitro and in vivo. Structure-activity relationship studies revealed that most target compounds could protect cardiomyocytes against hypoxia/reoxygenation-induced injury in vitro, with compound 85 being the most active and exhibiting more potent protective activity than clinical first-line drugs. Furthermore, all thiophene derivatives exhibited stronger protective activity than furan, pyridine, and pyrazine derivatives, and the protective activity gradually increased with the extension of the alkyl chain and changed in the substituent. The data from the in-vitro and in-vivo experiments revealed that compound 85 protected mitochondria from damage by inhibiting excessive production of oxidative stressors, such as intracellular ROS, which in turn inhibited the apoptosis and necrotize of cardiomyocytes and reduced infarct size, thereby protecting normal cardiac function. It was associated with enhanced activation of the PI3K/AKT-mediated HIF-1α signaling pathway. Therefore, compound 85 acts as an oxidative stress inhibitor, blocks ROS production, protects mitochondria and cells from myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (MI/R) injury, and represents an effective new drug for treating MI/R injury.

RESUMO

In this study, folate polyethylene glycol CTr albumin nanoparticles (FA-PEG-CTr-NPs) targeting hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) were prepared. The nanoparticle preparation method was optimized using single-factor and response surface analysis. The prepared nanoparticles were characterized for their particle size, zeta potential, and morphology. The particle size and zeta potential were also determined. Additionally, drug loading, encapsulation efficiency, and in vitro drug release of the nanoparticles were determined. Using the Cell Counting Kit-8 method, their cytotoxicity and their cell-targeted uptake were determined using confocal microscopy and flow cytometry. Finally, the in vivo antitumor impact and tumor-targeting ability of the nanoparticles were evaluated by determining tumor volume inhibition and drug biodistribution and performing hematoxylin-eosin (H&E) staining. It was found that CTr could be effectively encapsulated into albumin nanoparticles and functionalized. The drug loading of the two nanoparticles was 67.12 ± 2.4% and 69.33 ± 2.8%, respectively. Regarding drug release, FA-PEG-CTr-NPs (89.0%) exhibited a superior release rate to CTr-NPs (70.5%) in an acidic environment. The in vitro experiments confirmed that FA-PEG-CTr-NPs yielded better cytotoxicity and faster drug uptake results than CTr and CTr-NPs. In vivo experiments confirmed that FA-PEG-CTr-NPs exhibited markedly better tumor inhibitory activity (inhibition rate was 80.21%), drug safety, and targeting than CTr and CTr-NPs. In conclusion, functionalized nanoparticles (FA-PEG-CTr-NPs) can specifically inhibit the malignant proliferation of HCC cells and are thus a promising nanoagent for the treatment of HCC.

RESUMO

In order to qualitatively evaluate the impact of urea-in-water solution on the particle number emission, five different urea types were chosen under diesel engine bench test. The results show that compared to the instantaneous particle concentrations without injection, the instantaneous particle concentrations with injection increase distinctly, which are larger around 0.3-1.2 times than that without urea-in-water solution. At high speed phase, the instantaneous particle concentrations with urea-in-water solution injection rise obviously, especially for C and E solutions. In addition, the particle size distribution characteristic does not change with the urea-in-water solution dosing. The PN emission factors follow the sequence of C solution > E solution > A solution > B solution > D solution. It is deduced that the metallic element contents in the urea-in-water solution play a key role for the PN emission factor. In the future, the particle formation due to urea-in-water solution injection should be given more attention.

RESUMO

Utilizing sewage sludge (SS) to calcinate sulphoaluminate cement (SAC) is a promising technology for low-carbon transition of cement industry, but the unclear effects of SS-contained heavy metals limit the application of this technology. In this study, the effects of SS addition on the calcination of SAC clinker and the transformation of heavy metals were studied from the aspects of mineral phase change, microstructure evolution and heavy metal speciation respectively, covering the mineral formation temperature 900-1250 °C. The results show that the added SS will reduce the formation temperature and change the reaction pathways of mineral phases. When the content of SS increases from 10% to 25%, the compositions of mesophases CaO·Al2O3 and 4CaO·2SiO2·CaSO4 increase by 6.33% and 9.73%, respectively. Meanwhile, the formation of minerals will solidify Zn, Ni, Mn, Cu, Cr, and convert them into a more stable fraction (residual fraction), indicating a lower probability to harm the environment. Moreover, heavy metals present different migration behaviors. After calcination, Mn migrates from SS to 4CaO·Al2O3·Fe2O3 (52.48%), while Zn prefers to enter 3CaO·3Al2O3·CaSO4 (43.74%) and 4CaO·Al2O3·Fe2O3 (38.06%). This study offers new insights into the mineral formation mechanism and heavy metal transition behaviors of sewage sludge-based SAC.

RESUMO

The majority of patients with human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (Her2)-positive gastric cancer develop refractory to Her2-targeted therapy, where upregulation of immune checkpoints plays an essential role. Herein, a recombinant fully human IgG1 bispecific antibody IBI315 targeting both PD-1 and Her2 is developed  and its antitumor efficacy as well as the underlying mechanism is investigated. IBI315 crosslinks the physical interaction between Her2-positive tumor cells and PD-1-positive T cells, resulting in significantly enhanced antitumor effects compared to each parent antibody or their combination, both in vitro and in vivo mouse tumor models reconstituted with human immune cells using patient-derived xenografts and organoids. Moreover, IBI315 treatment also induces the recruitment and activation of immune cells in tumors. Mechanistically, IBI315 triggers gasdermin B (GSDMB)-mediated pyroptosis in tumor cells, leading to the activation and recruiments of T cells. The activated T cells secret IFNγ, enhancing GSDMB expression and establishing a positive feedback loop of T cell activation and tumor cell killing. Notably, GSDMB is found to be elevated in Her2-positive gastric cancer cells, providing a rationale for IBI315's efficacy. IBI315 is supported here as a promising bispecific antibody-based immunotherapy approach for Her2-positive gastric cancer in preclinical studies, broadening the therapeutic landscape of this patient population.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this review is to comprehensively summarize the state-of-the-art developments of quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) in the prevention and treatment of oral diseases. By discussing the structural diversity and the potential killing mechanism, we try to offer some insights for the future research of QACs. DATA, SOURCES & STUDY SELECTION: A literature search was conducted in electronic databases (Web of Science, PubMed, Medline, and Scopus). Publications that involved the applications of QACs, especially those related to the prevention and treatment of oral diseases, are included. RESULTS: We have reviewed the relevant research on QACs over the past two decades. The research results indicate that the current applications are mainly focused on dental material modification and direct pharmacological interventions. Concurrently, challenges such as potential risks to normal tissues and impediments in drug resistance and microbial persistence present certain application constraints. The latest studies have encompassed the exploration of smart materials and nanoparticle formulations. CONCLUSIONS: The killing mechanism may possess a threshold related to charge density. However, the exact process remains enigmatic. The structural diversity and the exploration of intelligent materials and nanoparticle formulations provide directions in development of novel QACs. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The intricate oral anatomy, combined with the multifaceted oral microbiome, necessitates specialized materials for the targeted prevention and treatment of oral pathologies. QACs represent a cohort of compounds distinguished by potent anti-infective and anti-tumor attributes. Innovations in intelligent materials and nanoparticle formulations amplify their potential in significantly advancing the prevention and therapeutic interventions for oral diseases.

RESUMO

Under challenging oral environments, the overall performance of resin composites is affected by bio-aging. This study investigated the effects of saliva biofilm-induced bio-aging on the mechanical properties and microbial behavior of composites with different filler types. Microhybrid, nanohybrid, nano-filled and nano-filled flowable composites were bio-aged with saliva biofilm for 30 days. Surface morphology, roughness, mechanical and aesthetic properties were determined. A 48 h saliva biofilm model was used to evaluate the microbial behavior of different composites in vitro. Biofilm metabolic activity, lactic acid production and live/dead bacterial staining were tested. Six volunteers were selected to wear intra-oral appliances with composite slabs for 24 h and biofilms were collected and analyzed using 16S rRNA sequencing to assess the biofilm formation over those materials in situ. Although there were increasing trends, surface roughness, water resorption and material solubility had no significant changes for all groups after bio-aging (p > 0.05). There were no significant changes in elastic modulus for all groups after aging (p > 0.05). However, a decrease in flexural strength in all groups was observed (p < 0.05), except for the nanoflow composite group (p > 0.05). The Vickers hardness remained stable in all groups after aging (p > 0.05), except for the nano-filled group (p < 0.05). The nanoflow composite showed distinct color changes compared to the micro-hybrid group after aging (p < 0.05). Biofilm metabolic activity and lactic acid production in vitro increased slightly after bio-aging in all groups, but with no statistical significance (p > 0.05). The Shannon index diversity of biofilms in situ decreased after aging (p < 0.05), while no significant difference was shown in species composition at the genus level in all groups (p > 0.05). Resin composites with different sized fillers displayed a relatively stable mechanical performance and uncompromised microbial behavior both in vitro and in situ after 30 days of bio-aging. Based on the results, composites with different filler types can be selected flexibly according to clinical needs. However, a longer time for bio-aging is still needed to confirm the mechanical properties and microbial behaviors of composites in the long run.

RESUMO

Two pink-pigmented bacterial strains, designated NBU2971T and NBU2972T, were isolated from the pit mud of a Chinese liquor. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences suggested that strains NBU2971T and NBU2972T formed a distinct lineage within the family Hymenobacteraceae and were closely related to members of the genus Pontibacter. 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain NBU2971T showed highest similarity of 97.9 % to Pontibacter arcticus 2b14T, and strain NBU2972T showed the highest similarity of 96.9 % to Pontibacter deserti JC215T. The 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, average nucleotide identity (ANI) and digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH) values between the two novel strains were 95.2, 73.8 and 19.6 %, respectively, suggesting that they represent different species. The ANI and dDDH values between two novel strains and related species of genus Pontibacter were well below the threshold limit for prokaryotic species delineation. The genomic DNA G+C contents of strains NBU2971T and NBU2972T were 51.3 and 44.5 mol%, respectively. The major cellular fatty acids of the two novel strains were iso-C15 : 0 and summed feature 4 (iso-C17 : 1 I and/or anteiso-C17 : 1 B). The major polar lipid of both novel strains was phosphatidylethanolamine. The only respiratory quinone was MK-7. Combining results of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and genotypic data, strains NBU2971T and NBU2972T are considered to be two representatives in the genus Pontibacter, which the name Pontibacter liquoris sp. nov. and Pontibacter vulgaris sp. nov. are proposed. The type strains of the new species are NBU2971T (=KCTC 82916T=MCCC 1K06395T) and NBU2972T (=KCTC 82917T=MCCC 1K06396T), respectively.

RESUMO

In this work, high-performance two-dimensional (2D) graphene-based single-atom electrocatalysts (ZZ/ZA-MNxCy) for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) were screened out using machine learning (ML). A model was built for the fast prediction of electrocatalysts and two descriptors valence electron correction (VEc) and degree of construction differences (DC) were proposed to improve the accuracy of the model prediction. Two evaluation criteria, high-performance catalyst retention rate rR and high-performance catalyst occupancy rate rO, were proposed to evaluate the accuracy of ML models in high-performance catalyst screening. The addition of VEc and DC in the model could change the mean absolute error (MAEtest) of the test set, the coefficient of determination (R2test) of the test set, rO, and rR from 0.334 V, 0.683, 0.222, and 0.360 to 0.271 V, 0.774, 0.421, and 0.671, respectively. The partially screened potential high-performance ORR electrocatalysts such as ZZ-CoN4 and ZZ-CoN3C1 were also further investigated using a Density Functional Theory (DFT) method, which confirmed the accuracy of the ML model (MAE = 0.157 V, R2 = 0.821).

RESUMO

Tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) is a potential phytoremediator that can reduce soil cadmium (Cd) contamination. Pot and hydroponic experiments were conducted to investigate the difference in absorption kinetics, translocation patterns, accumulation capacity, and extraction amounts between two leading tobacco cultivars in China. We studied the chemical forms and subcellular distribution of Cd in the plants to understand the diversity of the detoxification mechanism of the cultivars. The concentration-dependent kinetics of Cd accumulation in leaves, stems, roots, and xylem sap for cultivars Zhongyan 100 (ZY100) and K326, fitted well with the Michaelis-Menten equation. K326 exhibited high biomass, Cd tolerance, Cd translocation, and phytoextraction abilities. The acetic acid, sodium chloride, and water-extractable fractions accounted for > 90% of Cd in all ZY100 tissues but only in K326 roots and stems. Moreover, the acetic acid and NaCl fractions were the predominant storage forms, while the water fraction was the transport form. The ethanol fraction also contributed significantly to Cd storage in K326 leaves. As the Cd treatment increased, more NaCl and water fractions were found in K326 leaves, while only NaCl fractions increased in ZY100 leaves. For subcellular distribution, > 93% Cd proportions were primarily stored in both cultivars' soluble or cell wall fraction. The proportion of Cd in the cell wall fraction of ZY100 roots was less than that of K326, while that proportion in the soluble fraction in ZY100 leaves was higher than in K326 leaves. These findings demonstrate that Cd accumulation patterns, detoxification, and storage strategies differ between the cultivars, providing a deeper understanding of Cd tolerance and accumulation mechanism in tobacco plants. It also guides the screening of germplasm resources or gene modification to improve the Cd phytoextraction efficiency of tobacco.

RESUMO

It is well known that the physicochemical properties of nanocarriers, which are closely related to the surface modification of nanoparticles, have crucial impacts on their biological effects. Herein, the interaction between functionalized degradable dendritic mesoporous silica nanoparticles (DDMSNs) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) was investigated for probing into the nanocarriers' potential toxicity using multi-spectroscopy such as ultraviolet/visible (UV/Vis), synchronous fluorescence, Raman and circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy. BSA, owing to its structural homology and high sequence similarity with HSA, was employed as the model protein to study the interactions with DDMSNs, amino-modified DDMSNs (DDMSNs-NH2) and hyaluronic acid (HA) coated nanoparticles (DDMSNs-NH2-HA). It was found that the static quenching behavior of DDMSNs-NH2-HA to BSA was accompanied by an endothermic and hydrophobic force-driven thermodynamic process, which was confirmed by fluorescence quenching spectroscopic studies and thermodynamic analysis. Furthermore, the conformational variations of BSA upon interaction with nanocarriers were observed by combination of UV/Vis, synchronous fluorescence, Raman and CD spectroscopy. The microstructure of amino residues in BSA changed due to the existence of nanoparticles, for example, the amino residues and hydrophobic groups exposed to microenvironment and the alpha helix (α-helix) content of BSA decreased. Specially, through thermodynamic analysis, the diverse binding modes and driving forces between nanoparticles and BSA were discovered because of different surface modifications on DDMSNs, DDMSNs-NH2 and DDMSNs-NH2-HA. We believe that this work can promote the interpretation of mutual impact between nanoparticles and biomolecules, which will be in favor of predicting the biological toxicity of nano-DDS and engineering functionalized nanocarriers.

RESUMO

Catalyzing polysulfide conversion is a promising way toward accelerating complex and sluggish sulfur redox reactions (SRRs) in lithium-sulfur batteries. Reasonable alteration of an enzyme provides a new means to expand the natural enzyme universe to catalytic reactions in abiotic systems. Herein, we design and fabricate a denatured hemocyanin (DHc) to efficiently catalyze the SRR. After denaturation, the unfolded ß-sheet architectures with exposed rich atomically dispersed Cu, O, and N sites and intermolecular H-bonds are formed in DHc, which not only provides the polysulfides for a strong spatial confinement effect in microenvironment via S-O and Li···N interactions but also activates chemical channels for electron/Li+ transport into the Cu active center via H/Li-bonds to catalyze polysulfide conversion. As expected, the charge/discharge kinetics of DHc-containing cathodes is fundamentally improved in cyclability with nearly 100% Coulombic efficiency and capacity even under high sulfur loading (4.3 mg cm-2) and lean-electrolyte (8 µL mg-1) conditions.

RESUMO

Zn-ion capacitors are attracting great attention owing to the abundant and relatively stable Zn anodes but are impeded by the low capacitance of porous carbon cathodes with insufficient energy storage sites. Herein, using ball-milled graphene with different defect densities as the models, we reveal that the self-doping defects of carbon show a capacitive energy storage behavior with robust charge-transfer kinetics, providing a capacitance contribution of ca. 90 F g-1 per unit of defect density (AD/AG value from Raman spectra) in both aqueous and organic electrolytes. Furthermore, a simple NaCl-assisted ball-milling method is developed to prepare novel graphene blocks (BSG) with abundant self-doping defect density, enriched pores, balanced electric conductivity, and high compact density (0.83 g cm-3). The optimized ion and electron transfer paths promote efficient utilization of the self-doping defects in BSG, contributing to improved gravimetric and volumetric capacitance (224 F g-1/186 F cm-3 at 0.5 A g-1) and remarkable rate performance (52.2% capacitance retention at 20 A g-1). The defect engineering strategy may open up a new avenue to improve the capacitive performance of dense carbons for Zn-ion capacitors.

RESUMO

A novel electrochemical method for detecting fluoride was developed based on gold electrode modified by layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly of poly(3-aminophenylboronic acid)-reduced graphene oxide (PAPBA-RGO) multilayers. The PAPBA-RGO multilayer-modified gold electrode was constructed by using alternating LBL assembly of RGO and PAPBA on a bare gold electrode by one-step electrodeposition. Fluoride was electrochemically determined based on the proposed modified electrode by evaluating the changes in peak current for potassium ferricyanide reduction caused by the conjunction of fluoride and boronic acid groups of PAPBA. The results indicated that the peak current for potassium ferricyanide reduction obviously decreased with the increasing fluoride concentration. The response range of our method for fluoride was 1 × 10-8 to 1 × 10-1 M with a detection limit of 6 × 10-10 M and high sensitivity and selectivity. This method was applied to detect fluoride in tap water, rice, apple, and edible fungi samples.
