In this study, mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) composed of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and porous ZSM-5 zeolite are thoroughly investigated for concentrating alcohols of ethanol and n-propanol via dewatering pervaporation. The effects of the zeolite content (10-30 wt.%), feed composition (5-30 wt.% water), and feed temperature (50-90 °C) on the pervaporation flux/separation factor and component permeance/selectivity of these MMMs are examined in detail. These MMMs achieve higher separation efficiency and pervaporation flux than their pure PVA counterparts as expected, even if the dehydration results strongly depend on the pervaporation conditions. The disparity in pervaporation performances acquired for different alcohol solutions may be understood in terms of polarity and molecular size, which differ among these alcohol molecules. The PVA/zeolite MMM of 20 wt.% ZSM-5 zeolite content performs substantially stably at 60 °C for the feed with 80 wt.% alcohol while maintaining separation factors of 660 or 820 and total fluxes of 970 or 825 g/m2h for dewatering water/ethanol and water/n-propanol, respectively. Thus, our membranes appear to be technically feasible for practical alcohol dehydration uses.

The study aimed to explore the effects of rosiglitazone on glucose metabolism of GIFT tilapia based on the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway. The experiment was divided into five groups: normal starch group (32%, LC), high starch group (53%, HC), high starch +rosiglitazone group 1 (10 mg/kg, R1), high starch + rosiglitazone group 2 (20 mg/kg, R2), and high starch + rosiglitazone group 3 (30 mg/kg, R3). The results showed that a high starch diet supplemented with 10-20 mg/kg rosiglitazone had a better specific growth rate and protein efficiency that was beneficial for the growth of the tilapia. Rosiglitazone had no significant effect on the contents of crude lipid, crude protein, crude ash, and moisture of the whole fish body (p > 0.05). The contents of triglycerides and total cholesterol in the R1, R2, and R3 groups were lower than those in the HC group. The levels of glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT) and glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT) in R1 and R2 groups were significantly lower than those in the HC groups (p < 0.05). However, the GOT and GPT levels in the R3 groups were significantly higher than those in the R1 and R2 groups (p < 0.05). With an increase in the rosiglitazone concentration, the contents of serum glucose, insulin, and hepatic glycogen in the R1, R2, and R3 groups decreased gradually. Meanwhile, the muscle glycogen content in the R1, R2, and R3 groups increased gradually. The mRNA expression of the IRS-1, PI3K, GLUT-4, and Akt proteins in the R1, R2, and R3 groups was significantly higher than that in the HC group (p < 0.05). Compared with the HC group, the expression of the GSK-3 mRNA in the R1, R2, and R3 groups was significantly reduced (p < 0.05). The protein expression of p-Akt in the R1 and R2 groups was higher than that in the HC group (p > 0.05). The protein expression of p-GSK-3ß in the R1 and R2 groups was significantly higher than that in the HC group (p < 0.05). In conclusion, a high starch diet supplemented with rosiglitazone can improve growth, enhance the serum biochemical indices, and increase the muscle glycogen content in the GIFT tilapia. It benefits in upregulating the IRS-1, PI3K, and GLUT-4 mRNA levels in the skeletal muscle and promotes glucose uptake. Meanwhile, the phosphorylation of Akt and GSK-3ß increased significantly and resulted in the inactivation of GSK-3ß and alleviation of insulin resistance.

Vacuum sealing drainage (VSD) is a noninvasive adjunctive therapy to help patients with diabetic foot ulcers by reducing edema and promoting wound healing and formation of granulation tissue. Multiple databases were searched for relevant studies, and full-text articles comparing VSD and conventional therapy were reviewed. Meta-analyses were conducted with Review Manager 5.0 software to estimate the results of the selected articles. Forest plots, sensitivity analysis, and bias analysis were also performed on the included articles. In total, 10 studies satisfied the inclusion criteria and were selected in this study. The meta-analysis suggested that the duration of therapy, decrease of wound size, and efficacy rate showed statistically significant differences between the 2 groups (mean difference = -12.86; 95% confidence interval [CI] -12.86 to -8.52; p < .00001; mean difference = 8.71; 95% CI 3.25 to 14.17; p = .002; relative risk = 1.41; 95% CI 1.22 to 1.62; p < .00001, respectively) although the complication rate between the 2 groups was comparable (relative risk = 0.83; 95% CI 0.60 to 1.16; p = .28). Publication bias was not assessed because only a few articles were included. In conclusion, VSD is a more effective therapy and is associated with a greater decrease in wound size and shorter time to wound healing, compared to the conventional method.

To assess the efficacy and safety of endovenous laser treatment (EVLT) and high ligation (HL) for limb varicosity using meta-analysis. Multiple databases including PubMed, Springer, Excerpta Medica Database, Ovid Technologies, and China Journal Full-text database were searched for relevant studies in English or Chinese, and full-text articles were used to compare EVLT and HL for limb varicosity. Review Manager 5.0 was used to estimate the effects of the results among eligible articles. Forest plots, sensitivity analysis, and bias analysis of the included articles were also conducted. Initial screening yielded 1031 studies, 11 randomised controlled trials involving 1145 limb varicosity patients met the inclusion criteria in this study. The results of the heterogeneity test suggested that intraoperative blood loss mean difference (MD) = -6.31[-9.03, -3.60], P < 0.00001), operative time (MD) = -39.76[-42.27, -37.24], P < 0.00001), rate of complications (odds ratio [OR] = 0.37[0.22, 0.61], P < 0.0001), and recurrence (OR = 0.28[0.16, 0.49], P < 0.0001) were significantly different. Although both EVLT and HL have their own merits and demerits, EVLT is a more effective and safe method to treat limb varicosity.
