RESUMO

Environmental credit rating (ECR) is a new policy that deeply integrates the construction of ecological civilisation and the social credit system in China; however, there is a paucity of research on the response of external auditors to the ECR. This study takes the environmental credit evaluation policy implementation as a quasi-natural experiment, using China's A-share listed companies in heavily polluting industries from 2008 to 2019 as samples. We construct a heterogeneous timing difference-in-differences model to empirically explore the impact of ECR on audit fees. The results show that the ECR significantly reduces companies' audit fees. Importantly, our analysis suggests that the ECR improves environmental information transparency and enhances sustainable operation ability, thereby reducing audit fees. Further analysis shows that the negative correlation between the ECR and audit fees is more obvious in non-state enterprises, in poor legal environments and low levels of trust. Our study provides scientific evidence for the economic consequences of the environmental credit evaluation policy and enriches the literature on the factors affecting audit fees. It has revelatory significance for China and other developing countries to implement and improve the environmental credit evaluation policies and better guide enterprises to fulfil their environmental responsibilities.

RESUMO

Lacticaseibacillus paracasei SMN-LBK, which was isolated in Xinjiang, has been shown to be a probiotic strain and used as the auxiliary starter for dairy fermentation. Comparative genomic analysis was performed to investigate the metabolic preference and ethanol tolerance mechanisms of L. paracasei SMN-LBK. The results of comparative genomics showed that L. paracasei strains had high conservation and genetic diversity. SMN-LBK encoded various genes related to carbohydrate and amino acid metabolism pathways, which endow this strain with good fermentation potential. In addition, 6 CRISPR sequences and 8 cas proteins were found in SMN-LBK, and these could play vital roles in the immune system. Furthermore, a unique cluster of potential secondary metabolism genes related to bacteriocins was detected in the genome of SMN-LBK, and this could be important for the preservation of fermented foods. Multiple genes related to alcohol tolerance were also identified. In conclusion, our study explained the traits that were previously demonstrated for SMN-LBK as phenotypes and provided a theoretical basis for the application of SMN-LBK in the food industry.

RESUMO

Mixed fermentation improves the flavor quality of food. Untargeted metabolomics were used to evaluate the impact of mixed fermentation and single-strain fermentation on the volatile and non-volatile compound profiles of Kazak cheese. Lacticaseibacillus paracasei SMN-LBK and Kluyveromyces marxianus SMN-S7-LBK were used to make mixed-fermentation cheese (M), while L. paracasei SMN-LBK was applied in single-strain-fermentation cheese (S). A higher abundances of acids, alcohols, and esters were produced via mixed fermentation. Furthermore, 397 differentially expressed non-volatile metabolites were identified between S and M during ripening. The flavor compounds in mixed-fermentation cheese mainly resulted from ester production (ethyl butanoate, ethyl acetate, ethyl octanoate, and ethyl hexanoate) and amino acid biosynthesis (Asp, Glu, Gln, and Phe). The metabolites were differentially expressed in nitrogen metabolism, D-glutamine and D-glutamate metabolism, phenylalanine metabolism, D-alanine metabolism, and other metabolic pathways. The amount of flavor compounds was increased in M, indicating that L. paracasei SMN- LBK and K. marxianus SMN-S7-LBK had synergistic effects in the formation of flavor compounds. This study comprehensively demonstrated the difference in metabolites between mixed-fermentation and single-strain-fermentation cheese and provided a basis for the production of Kazak cheese with diverse flavor characteristics.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Molasses is a wildly used feedstock for fermentation, but it also poses a severe wastewater-disposal problem worldwide. Recently, the wastewater from yeast molasses fermentation is being processed into fulvic acid (FA) powder as a fertilizer for crops, but it consequently induces a problem of soil acidification after being directly applied into soil. In this study, the low-cost FA powder was bioconverted into a value-added product of γ-PGA by a glutamate-independent producer of Bacillus velezensis GJ11. RESULTS: FA power could partially substitute the high-cost substrates such as sodium glutamate and citrate sodium for producing γ-PGA. With FA powder in the fermentation medium, the amount of sodium glutamate and citrate sodium used for producing γ-PGA were both decreased around one-third. Moreover, FA powder could completely substitute Mg2+, Mn2+, Ca2+, and Fe3+ in the fermentation medium for producing γ-PGA. In the optimized medium with FA powder, the γ-PGA was produced at 42.55 g/L with a productivity of 1.15 g/(L·h), while only 2.87 g/L was produced in the medium without FA powder. Hydrolyzed γ-PGA could trigger induced systemic resistance (ISR), e.g., H2O2 accumulation and callose deposition, against the pathogen's infection in plants. Further investigations found that the ISR triggered by γ-PGA hydrolysates was dependent on the ethylene (ET) signaling and nonexpressor of pathogenesis-related proteins 1 (NPR1). CONCLUSIONS: To our knowledge, this is the first report to use the industry waste, FA powder, as a sustainable substrate for microbial synthesis of γ-PGA. This bioprocess can not only develop a new way to use FA powder as a cheap feedstock for producing γ-PGA, but also help to reduce pollution from the wastewater of yeast molasses fermentation.

RESUMO

The 2-hydroxyglutarate (2-HG) has been reported to result from mutations of isocitrate dehydrogenase 1 and 2 (IDH1 and IDH2) genes and to function as an "oncometabolite." To evaluate the clinical significance of serum 2-HG levels in hematologic malignancies, acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in particular, we analyzed this metabolite in distinct types of human leukemia and lymphoma and established the range of serum 2-HG in appropriate normal control individuals by using gas chromatograph-time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Aberrant serum 2-HG pattern was detected in the multicenter group of AML, with 62 of 367 (17%) patients having 2-HG levels above the cutoff value (2.01, log2-transformed from 4.03 µg/mL). IDH1/2 mutations occurred in 27 of 31 (87%) AML cases with very high 2-HG, but were observed only in 9 of 31 (29%) patients with moderately high 2-HG, suggesting other genetic or biochemical events may exist in causing 2-HG elevation. Indeed, glutamine-related metabolites exhibited a pattern in favor of 2-HG synthesis in the high 2-HG group. In AML patients with cytogenetically normal AML (n = 234), high 2-HG represented a negative prognostic factor in both overall survival and event-free survival. Univariate and multivariate analyses confirmed high serum 2-HG as a strong prognostic predictor independent of other clinical and molecular features. We also demonstrated distinct gene-expression/DNA methylation profiles in AML blasts with high 2-HG compared with those with normal ones, supporting a role that 2-HG plays in leukemogenesis.
