RESUMO

Bioelectrochemical systems (BES) have emerged as a dual-function technology for treating wastewater and recovering energy. A vital element of BES is the rapid formation and maintenance of electroactive biofilms (EABs). Previous attempts to accelerate EAB formation and improve electroactivities focused on enhancing the bacterial adhesion process while neglecting the rate-limiting step of the bacterial transport process. Here, we introduce membrane filtration into BES, establishing a dynamic membrane filtration system that enhances overall performance. We observed that optimal membrane flux considerably reduced the startup time for EAB formation. Specifically, EABs established under a 25 L m-2 h-1 flux (EAB25 LMH) had a formation time of 43.8 ± 1.3 h, notably faster than the 51.4 ± 1.6 h in the static state (EAB0 LMH). Additionally, EAB25 LMH exhibited a significant increase in maximum current density, approximately 2.2 times higher than EAB0 LMH. Pearson correlation analysis indicated a positive relationship between current densities and biomass quantities and an inverse correlation with startup time. Microbial analysis revealed two critical findings: (i) variations in maximum current densities across different filtration conditions were associated with redox-active substances and biomass accumulation, and (ii) the incorporation of a filtration process in EAB formation enhanced the proportion of viable cells and encouraged a more diverse range of electroactive bacteria. Moreover, the novel electroactive membrane demonstrated sustained current production and effective solid-liquid separation during prolonged operation, indicating its potential as a viable alternative in membrane-based systems. This approach not only provides a new operational model for BES but also holds promise for expanding its application in future wastewater treatment solutions.

Background: Recurrent of local kyphosis after percutaneous kyphoplasty (PKP) is rarely reported and discussed. Literatures reported that re-kyphosis is usually a consequence of refractures of augmented or adjacent vertebra. However, whether re-kyphosis should be considered as a complication of refractures and has an impact on clinical efficacy of PKP during follow-up time is unknown. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the related risk factors and clinical significance of the recurrent of local kyphosis in osteoporotic vertebral fracture (OVF) patients without refractures. Patients and Methods: A total of 143 patients who underwent single-level PKP were recruited and assigned into the re-kyphosis group and non-re-kyphosis group. Clinical and radiographic data were collected and compared between the two groups. Then, multivariate logistic regression analyses were conducted to identify the related risk factors. Results: During follow-up, 16 of the 143 patients presented postoperative re-kyphosis. The average local kyphosis angle increased from 11.81±8.60° postoperatively to 25.13±8.91° at the final follow-up which showed a statistically significant difference (p<0.05). Both groups had significant improvements in postoperative visual analogue scale (VAS) and Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) scores compared to their preoperative values (p<0.05). However, in the re-kyphosis group at final follow-up, the VAS and ODI scores showed worsening compared to the postoperative scores. Logistic regression analysis showed that disc-endplate complex injury (OR=17.46, p=0.003); local kyphosis angle correction (OR=1.84, p<0.001); and vertebral height restoration (OR=1.15, p=0.003) were risk factors for re-kyphosis. Conclusion: Re-kyphosis is not rare in patients with osteoporotic vertebral fracture and tends to have an inferior prognosis following PKP surgery. Patients with disc-endplate complex injury and more correction of vertebral height and kyphosis angle are at a higher risk for re-kyphosis after PKP surgery than others.

BACKGROUND: Thoracolumbar fascia injury (FI) is rarely discussed in osteoporotic vertebral fracture (OVF) patients in previous literature and it is usually neglected and treated as an unmeaning phenomenon. We aimed to evaluate the characteristics of the thoracolumbar fascia injury and further discuss its clinical significance in the treatment of kyphoplasty for osteoporotic vertebral fracture (OVF) patients. METHODS: Based on the presence or absence of FI, 223 OVF patients were divided into two groups. The demographics of patients with and without FI were compared. The visual analogue scale and Oswestry disability index scores were compared preoperatively and after PKP treatment between these groups. RESULTS: Thoracolumbar fascia injuries were observed in 27.8% of patients. Most FI showed a multi-level distribution pattern which involved a mean of 3.3 levels. Location of fractures, severity of fractures and severity of trauma were significantly different between patients with and without FI. In further comparison, severity of trauma was significantly different between patients with severe and non-severe FI. In patients with FI, VAS and ODI scores of 3 days and 1 month after PKP treatment were significantly worse compared to those without FI. It showed the same trend in VAS and ODI scores in patients with severe FI when compared to those patients with non-severe FI. CONCLUSIONS: FI is not rare in OVF patients and presents multiple levels of involvement. The more serious trauma suffered, the more severe thoracolumbar fascia injury presented. The presence of FI which was related to residual acute back pain significantly affected the effectiveness of PKP in treating OVFs. TRIAL REGISTRATION: retrospectively registered.

An electroactive dynamic membrane (EADM), which enabled simultaneous solid-liquid separation and contaminants removal, has been developed by electrostimulation using domestic wastewater as inoculum. Results showed that both the control dynamic membrane (CDM), without electrical stimulation, and the EADM systems exhibited stable removal performance with chemical oxygen demand (COD), and a robustness in responding to a fluctuating organic load. With the introduction of a weak electrical field, the EADM transmembrane pressure (TMP) was significantly reduced (0.02 kPa/d) compared with the control (0.20 kPa/d). In the treatment of methyl orange (MO), the EADM system achieved a decolorization efficiency of 85.87 %, much higher than the control dynamic membrane (CDM) system (58.84 %), which can be attributed to electrical stimulation and H2 production on cathode. Microbial analysis has established that electrostimulation enriched the electroactive bacteria in the dynamic biofilm, and shaped the microbial structure, with improved contaminant removal. The results of this study highlight the potential of regulating the microbial community and creating a beneficial biofilm as a dynamic layer to facilitate contaminant removal.

The union of Plant Growth-Promoting Bacteria (PGPB) and rhizosphere confers a series of functions beneficial to plant. However, the lack of an opearable in situ method limits the further understanding on the mechanism. In this study, a weak electric field was designed to regulate rhizospheric microflora in a constructed root-splitting reactor. Compared with the control, the aboveground and underground biomass of rice seedling increased by 17 % and 18 % (p < 0.05) respectively under the exist of weak electric field of 0.14 V/cm. The joint action of rhizosphere and PGPB displayed the detoxification ability in the condition of soluble petroleum hydrocarbons, where the height, stem diameter, biomass and root vigor of the plant was increased by 58 %, 32 %, 43 % and 48 % respectively than the control. The selective reproduction of endophytes and ectophytes (denitrifying, auxin-producing, hydrocarbon-degrading and electroactive bacteria) was observed under applied weak electric field, which enhanced the nitrogen utilization, cellular metabolic activity and resistance to toxic organics of plant. This was further confirmed by the up-regulated OTUs related to the hydrocarbon degradation function, tryptophan metabolism and metabolism of nicotinate and nicotinamide. Moreover, the weak electric field also enhanced the transfer ability of partial endophytes grown in the root to improve plant stress resistance. The results in this work inspired an exercisable method for in situ enrichment of PGPB in the rhizosphere to cope with food crisis and provided a new way to deal with sudden environmental events.

The outbreak of novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has resulted in changes in productivity and daily life patterns, and as a result electricity consumption (EC) has also shifted. In this paper, we construct estimates of EC changes at the metropolitan level across the continental U.S., including total EC and residential EC during the initial two months of the pandemic. The total and residential data on the state level were broken down into the county level, and then metropolitan level EC estimates were aggregated from the counties included in each metropolitan statistical area (MSA). This work shows that the reduction in total EC is related to the shares of certain industries in an MSA, whereas regardless of the incidence level or economic structure, the residential sector shows a trend of increasing EC across the continental U.S. Since the MSAs account for 86% of the total population and 87% of the total EC of the continental U.S., the analytical result in this paper can provide important guidelines for future social-economic crises.

Purpose: To assess the efficacy and complications of anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) with ROI-C device vs. conventional anterior plate and cage system (APCS) in managing traumatic central cord syndrome (TCCS). Methods: A total of 37 patients diagnosed with TCCS who underwent ACDF with ROI-C implant and APCS were recruited in this retrospective study from June 2012 to February 2020. Radiological parameters and clinical results were recorded and compared through follow-up time. Characteristics of patients and complications were also recorded. Results: All patients tolerated the procedure well. The average follow-up time was 25.00 ± 7.99 months in the ROI-C group, and 21.29 ± 7.41 months in the APCS group. The blood loss and operation time were significantly lower in the ROI-C group than in the APCS group. Radiological parameters and clinical results were all improved postoperatively and maintained at the final follow-up. Fusion was achieved in all patients. ROI-C group had a lower incidence of postoperative dysphagia than the APCS group. Only 1 case of ALD was observed at the final follow-up in the APCS group. Conclusions: Both ROI-C device and APCS demonstrated satisfactory clinical effects and safety in managing symptomatic single-level traumatic central cord syndrome with underlying instability. Both techniques could improve and maintain cervical lordosis and disc height. ROI-C device was related to a lower incidence of postoperative dysphagia, shorter operation time, and less blood loss.

A microwave scattering model is a powerful tool for determining relationships between vegetation parameters and backscattering characteristics. The crown shape of the vegetation canopy is an important parameter in forestry and affects the microwave scattering modeling results. However, there are few numerical models or methods to describe the relationships between crown shapes and backscattering features. Using the Modified Tor Vergata Model (MTVM), a microwave scattering model based on the Matrix Doubling Algorithm (MDA), we quantitatively characterized the effects of crown shape on the microwave backscattering coefficients of the vegetation canopy. FEKO was also used as a computational electromagnetic method to make a complement and comparison with MTVM. In a preliminary experiment, the backscattering coefficients of two ideal vegetation canopies with four representative crown shapes (cylinder, cone, inverted cone and ellipsoid) were simulated: MTVM simulations were performed for the L (1.2 GHz), C (5.3 GHz) and X (9.6 GHz) bands in fully polarimetric mode, and FEKO simulations were carried out for the C (5.3 GHz) band at VV and VH polarization. The simulation results show that, for specific input parameters, the mean relative differences in backscattering coefficients due to variations in crown shape are as high as 127%, which demonstrates that the crown shape has a non-negligible influence on microwave backscattering coefficients of the vegetation canopy. In turn, this also suggests that investigation on effects of plant crown shape on microwave backscattering coefficients may have the potential to improve the accuracy of vegetation microwave scattering models, especially in canopies where volume scattering is the predominant mechanism.

Lodging, a commonly occurring rice crop disaster, seriously reduces rice quality and production. Monitoring rice lodging after a typhoon event is essential for evaluating yield loss and formulating suitable remedial policies. The availability of Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 open-access remote sensing data provides large-scale information with a short revisit time to be freely accessed. Data from these sources have been previously shown to identify lodged crops. In this study, therefore, Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 data after a typhoon event were combined to enable monitoring of lodging rice to be quickly undertaken. In this context, the sensitivity of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) features (SF) and spectral indices (SI) extracted from Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 to lodged rice were analyzed, and a model was constructed for selecting optimal sensitive parameters for lodging rice (OSPL). OSPL has high sensitivity to lodged rice and strong ability to distinguish lodged rice from healthy rice. After screening, Band 11(SWIR-1) and Band 12(SWIR-2) were identified as optimal spectral indices (OSI), and VV, VV + VH and Shannon Entropy were optimal SAR features (OSF). Three classification results of lodging rice were acquired using the Random Forest classification (RFC) method based on OSI, OSF and integrated OSI-OSF stack images, respectively. Results indicate that an overall level of accuracy of 91.29% was achieved with the combination of SAR and optical optimal parameters. The result was 2.91% and 6.05% better than solely using optical or SAR processes, respectively.

Detailed mapping of landfast ice deformation can be used to characterize the rheological behavior of landfast ice effectively and to improve sea ice modeling subsequently. In order to analyze the characteristics, trends and causes of deformation comprehensively and accurately, the Sentinel-1A ascending and descending orbits data were used to detect the horizontal and vertical deformation of the fast ice in the Baltic Sea. Firstly, the fast ice edge lines were acquired through feature extraction with interferometric coherence images and SAR amplitude images. Then, the deformation transformed model was constructed according to the geometric relationship of multi-orbits deformation measurements. Finally, the landfast ice deformations were resolved and the horizontal and vertical deformations were obtained. The results showed that the maximum deformation was-44 cm in horizontal direction and 16 cm in vertical direction within the fast ice region of 960 km2 during the time from 2 to 16 February 2018. The southwest wind was the principal reason for the deformation, which made the deformation mainly occur in the horizontal direction from east to west. Moreover, the inner fast ice kept stable due to the protection of outer consolidated ice. The results showed that the deformation trend and characteristics can be better understood by using InSAR technology that was combined with multi-orbits SAR data to resolve and analyze the landfast ice deformation.

High brittleness and lack osteogenesis are two major limitations of calcium phosphate cement (CPC) in application in bone defect reconstruction. Here we prepared a composite calcium phosphate cement by mixing N-acetyl cysteine loaded silk fibroin solution with α-tricalcium phosphate. In vitro cytology experiment revealed that SF-NAC/α-TCP could significantly increase the activity of exocrine ALP and up-regulated expression of bone-related genes. However, NAC up-regulated gene expression could be significantly suppressed by DKK1. We propose that NAC functioning as osteogenic factor by activating the Wnt/ß-catenin signaling pathway may be the possible mechanism of up-regulation of osteogenic genes. Bone regeneration in vivo shown in a rat femur defect was enhanced by the addition of NAC in SF/α-TCP. In addition, the combination intensity of cement-bone interface was improved. The combination SF-NAC/α-TCP might be developed into a promising tool for bone tissue repair in the clinic.
