A review of platelet-rich plasma for enteric fistula management.

Enteric fistula (EF), a serious complication after abdominal surgery, refers to unnatural communication between the gastrointestinal tract and the skin or other hollow organs. It is associated with infection, massive fluid/electrolyte loss, and malnutrition, resulting in an unhealed course. Despite advances in surgical techniques, wound care, infection control, and nutritional support, EF remains associated with considerable morbidity and mortality. Autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) containing elevated platelet concentrations has been proposed to promote healing in many tissues. However, the mechanism of action of PRP in EF treatment remains unclear owing to its complicated clinical manifestations. In this review, we summarized the clinical approaches, outlined the principal cytokines involved in the healing effects, and discussed the advantages of PRP for EF therapy. In addition, we defined the mechanism of autologous PRP in EF management, which is essential for further developing EF therapies.

Application of platelet-rich-plasma in the postoperative treatment of perianal abscess pseudohealing: A case report.

RATIONALE: Perianal abscess is a common disease of the anus and intestine. Surgery is an important treatment option for perianal abscess. However, some patients have a long healing time, poor healing effect after surgery, or even pseudo-healing. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is rich in platelets that can release a large number of factors when activated and promote wound healing. Moreover, there are few reports on the use of PRP for wounds that are difficult to heal after perianal abscess surgery. PATIENT CONCERNS: The patient had reported a complaint of perianal swelling and discomfort associated with anal pain, which was considered a perianal abscess. Ceftriaxone, fumigation, and sitz bath were administered after mixed hemorrhoid and perianal abscess surgeries were performed; however, the wound remained unhealed for more than 3 months, and there was a fistula under the skin. DIAGNOSIS: Perianal color ultrasonography revealed perianal abscess. INTERVENTIONS: Autologous PRP treatment was performed 5 times for each patient. OUTCOMES: The postoperative wound healed within 15 days after 5 times PRP treatments. LESSONS: PRP is a novel treatment option for pseudo-healing.

Synthesis of highly twinned ZnSe nanorods for enhancing N2 electrochemical conversion to NH3.

In this work, we report an atomistic understanding of the hydrogenation behavior of a highly twinned ZnSe nanorod (T-ZnSe) with a large density of surface atomic steps and the activation of N2 molecules adsorbed on its surface. Theoretical calculations suggest that the atomic steps are essential for the hydrogenation of T-ZnSe, which greatly enhances its catalytic activity. As a result, the T-ZnSe nanorods exhibit a significantly enhanced NH3 production rate of 13.3 µg h-1 mg-1 and faradaic efficiency of 5.83% towards the NRR compared with the pristine ZnSe nanorods. This report offers an important pathway for the development of efficient catalysts for the NRR, and a versatile anion-exchange strategy for efficiently manipulating materials' functionalities.

Platelet-rich plasma for the treatment of chronic rectal ulcer: A case report.

RATIONALE: Rectum ulcer is a disease of the digestive system, the main symptoms of which includes bloody diarrhea, abdominal pain, hematochezia, etc. At present, drug therapy and surgery are the most common treatments. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) contains high concentrations of platelets and has been used to promote wound healing. However, the utilization of PRP in rectal ulcers has rarely been reported. PATIENT CONCERNS: The patient had reported a complaint of blood dripping from the stool for more than 4 months. She had a history of surgery for rectal cancer with postoperative chemotherapy and radiotherapy 19 years prior. Mesalazine suppository was given to her for about 4 months, and glutamine capsules for 2 months, but the rectal ulcer remained unhealed. DIAGNOSIS: A rectal ulcer was observed on colonoscopy, and the biopsy result was tubular adenoma. INTERVENTIONS: Autologous PRP treatment was performed for the patient under an anorectal scope together with basic supportive care. OUTCOMES: The ulcer nearly healed within 9 days after twice PRP treatments. LESSONS: PRP treatment may bring about novel treatment options for rectal ulcers.
