OBJECTIVE: Both exposure to heavy metals and alcohol intake have been related to the risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D). In this study, we aimed to assess the potential interactions between metal exposure and alcohol intake on the risk of T2D and prediabetes in a cohort of Chinese male workers. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 26,008 Chinese male workers in an occupational cohort study from 2011 to 2013. We assessed metal exposure and alcohol consumption at baseline in these workers who were aged ≥20 years. Based on occupations which were categorized according to measured urine metal levels, multiple logistic regression analyses were used to evaluate the independent and joint effects of metal and alcohol exposure on the risk of T2D and prediabetes. RESULTS: Risks of T2D (P trend = 0.001) and prediabetes (P trend = 0.001) were significantly elevated with increasing number of standard drinks per week, years of drinking, and lifetime alcohol consumption. An adjusted odds ratio (OR) of 6.1 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 4.8-7.8) was observed for the smelting/refining workers (highest metal exposure levels) who had the highest lifetime alcohol consumption (>873 kg) (P interaction = 0.018), whereas no statistically significant joint effect was found for prediabetes (P interaction = 0.515). CONCLUSIONS: Both exposures to metal and heavy alcohol intake were associated with the risk of diabetes in this large cohort of male workers. There was a strong interaction between these two exposures in affecting diabetes risk that needs to be confirmed in future studies.

Soil moisture is an important component of the soil-vegetation-atmosphere continuum (SPAC). It is a key factor to determine the water status of terrestrial ecosystems, and is also the main source of water supply for crops. In order to estimate soil moisture at different soil depths at a station scale, based on the energy balance equation and the water deficit index (WDI), a soil moisture estimation model was established in terms of the remote sensing data (the normalized difference vegetation index and surface temperature) and air temperature. The soil moisture estimation model was validated based on the data from the drought process experiment of summer maize (Zea mays) responding to different irrigation treatments carried out during 2014 at Gucheng eco-agrometeorological experimental station of China Meteorological Administration. The results indicated that the soil moisture estimation model developed in this paper was able to evaluate soil relative humidity at different soil depths in the summer maize field, and the hypothesis was reasonable that evapotranspiration deficit ratio (i.e., WDI) linearly depended on soil relative humidity. It showed that the estimation accuracy of 0-10 cm surface soil moisture was the highest (R2=0.90). The RMAEs of the estimated and measured soil relative humidity in deeper soil layers (up to 50 cm) were less than 15% and the RMSEs were less than 20%. The research could provide reference for drought monitoring and irrigation management.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is primarily thought of as a disease of aging. However, recent evidence points to the potential for exposure to xenobiotics during development to increase risk of PD. Here, we report that developmental exposure to the organochlorine pesticide heptachlor alters the dopamine system and increases neurotoxicity in an animal model of PD. Exposure of pregnant mice to heptachlor led to increased levels of the dopamine transporter (DAT) and vesicular monoamine transporter 2 (VMAT2) levels at both the protein and mRNA level in their offspring. Increased DAT and VMAT2 levels were accompanied by alterations of mRNA levels of nuclear transcription factors that control dopamine neuron development and regulate DAT and VMAT2 levels in adulthood. At 12 weeks of age, control and heptachlor-exposed offspring were administered a moderate dose (2 x 10mg/kg) of the parkinsonism-inducing agent MPTP. Greater neurotoxicity as evidenced by a greater loss of striatal dopamine and potentiation of increased levels of glial fibrillary acidic protein and alpha-synuclein was observed in heptachlor-exposed offspring. The neurotoxicity observed was greater in the male offspring than the female offspring, suggesting that males are more susceptible to the long-term effects of developmental heptachlor exposure. These data suggest that developmental heptachlor exposure causes long-term alterations of the dopamine system thereby rendering it more susceptible to dopaminergic damage in adulthood.
