RESUMO

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 is a highly contagious positive-sense, single-stranded RNA virus that has rapidly spread worldwide. As of December 17, 2023, 772838745 confirmed cases including 6988679 deaths have been reported globally. This virus primarily spreads through droplets, airborne transmission, and direct contact. Hospitals harbor a substantial number of confirmed coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients and asymptomatic carriers, accompanied by high population density and a larger susceptible population. These factors serve as potential triggers for nosocomial infections, posing a threat during the COVID-19 pandemic. Nosocomial infections occur to varying degrees across different countries worldwide, emphasizing the urgent need for a practical approach to prevent and control the intra-hospital spread of COVID-19. This study primarily concentrated on a novel strategy combining preventive measures with treatment for combating COVID-19 nosocomial infections. It suggests preventive methods, such as vaccination, disinfection, and training of heathcare personnel to curb viral infections. Additionally, it explored therapeutic strategies targeting cellular inflammatory factors and certain new medications for COVID-19 patients. These methods hold promise in rapidly and effectively preventing and controlling nosocomial infections during the COVID-19 pandemic and provide a reliable reference for adopting preventive measures in the future pandemic.

RESUMO

Routine pediatric vaccination is one of the most effective public health inter-ventions for the control of a number of fatal diseases. However, during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, routine pediatric vaccination rates were severely affected by disruptions of health services and vaccine confidence issues. Governments and the United Nations have taken measures to re-establish routine pediatric vaccination, while additional efforts are needed to catch up and develop plans to ensure routine vaccination services for the future pandemics.

The proliferation of toxic organisms caused by changes in the marine environment, coupled with the rising human activities along the coastal lines, has resulted in an increasing number of stinging incidents, posing a serious threat to public health. Here, we evaluated the systemic toxicity of the venom in jellyfish Chrysaora quinquecirrha at both cellular and animal levels, and found that jellyfish tentacle extract (TE) has strong lethality accompanied by abnormal elevation of blood biochemical indicators and pathological changes. Joint analysis of transcriptome and proteome indicated that metalloproteinases are the predominant toxins in jellyfish. Specially, two key metalloproteinases DN6695_c0_g3 and DN8184_c0_g7 were identified by mass spectrometry of the red blood cell membrane and tetracycline hydrochloride (Tch) inhibition models. Structurally, molecular docking and kinetic analysis are employed and observed that Tch could inhibit the enzyme activity by binding to the hydrophobic pocket of the catalytic center. In this study, we demonstrated that Tch impedes the metalloproteinase activity thereby reducing the lethal effect of jellyfish, which suggests a potential strategy for combating the health threat of marine toxic jellyfish.

The marine environment can be extremely dangerous, and the harm caused by marine organisms when they contact the human body can be especially harmful, even deadly. Contact includes stings, bites, wounds, and consumption as food. In this article, the characteristics of the common marine biological injuries are summarized, the major marine organisms causing damage in China's marine waters are described, and injury prevention and treatment methods are discussed.

With the development of English education, translation scoring has gradually become a time-consuming and energy-consuming task, and it is difficult to ensure objectivity because of the subjective factors in manual correcting. Due to the similarity between the quality evaluation of responses generated by the dialogue system and the translation results submitted by students, we selected two metrics of dialogue to automatically score the translations, which are applied in a case study. The experiments show that the hybrid scores of two metrics are close to human scores. In conclusion, the method is feasible to apply the evaluation metrics of dialogue systems to translation scoring, and it can provide an improvement idea for the automatic scoring of translations in the future.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 has brought serious challenges for the medical field. Patients with COVID-19 usually have respiratory symptoms. However, liver dysfunction is not an uncommon presentation. Additionally, the degree of liver dysfunction is associated with the severity and prognosis of COVID-19. Prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of malnutrition should be routinely recommended in the management of patients with COVID-19, especially in those with liver dysfunction. Recently, a large number of studies have reported that nutrition therapy measures, including natural dietary supplements, vitamins, minerals and trace elements, and probiotics, might have potential hepatoprotective effects against COVID-19-related liver dysfunction via their antioxidant, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and positive immunomodulatory effects. This review mainly focuses on the possible relationship between COVID-19 and liver dysfunction, nutritional and metabolic characteristics, nutritional status assessment, and nutrition therapy to provide a reference for the nutritionists while making evidence-based nutritional decisions during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 has become a worldwide public health crisis. Studies have demonstrated that diabetes and dyslipidaemia are common comorbidities and could be high-risk factors for severe COVID-19. Vitamin D, a group of fat-soluble compounds responsible for intestinal absorption of calcium, magnesium, and phosphate, has been widely used as a dietary supplement for the prevention and treatment of numerous diseases, including infectious and non-infectious diseases, due to its high cost-effectiveness; safety; tolerability; and anti-thrombotic, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and immunomodulatory properties. In this letter to the editor, we mainly discuss the potential role of vitamin D in patients with diabetes, dyslipidaemia, and COVID-19.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) is spreading at an alarming rate, and it has created an unprecedented health emergency threatening tens of millions of people worldwide. Previous studies have indicated that SARS-CoV-2 ribonucleic acid could be detected in the feces of patients even after smear-negative respiratory samples. However, demonstration of confirmed fecal-oral transmission has been difficult. Clinical studies have shown an incidence rate of gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms ranging from 2% to 79.1% in patients with COVID-19. They may precede or accompany respiratory symptoms. The most common GI symptoms included nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. In addition, some patients also had liver injury, pancreatic damage, and even acute mesenteric ischemia/thrombosis. Although the incidence rates reported in different centers were quite different, the digestive system was the clinical component of the COVID-19 section. Studies have shown that angiotensin-converting enzyme 2, the receptor of SARS-CoV-2, was not only expressed in the lungs, but also in the upper esophagus, small intestine, liver, and colon. The possible mechanism of GI symptoms in COVID-19 patients may include direct viral invasion into target cells, dysregulation of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2, immune-mediated tissue injury, and gut dysbiosis caused by microbiota. Additionally, numerous experiences, guidelines, recommendations, and position statements were published or released by different organizations and societies worldwide to optimize the management practice of outpatients, inpatients, and endoscopy in the era of COVID-19. In this review, based on our previous work and relevant literature, we mainly discuss potential fecal-oral transmission, GI manifestations, abdominal imaging findings, relevant pathophysiological mechanisms, and infection control and prevention measures in the time of COVID-19.

To understand the nanoscale pore development characteristics of closed coal under the combined influence of temperature and confined pressure, a series of experiments at different temperatures and pressures were carried out using a custom closed coal temperature and pressure experimental system. The lean coal samples were taken from a mining area in Qinshui Basin, North China. In these experiments, the temperature was 200 °C or 300 °C, the pressure was 14 MPa or 23 MPa, respectively, and the experiment duration was 12 h. The CH4/N2/CO2 isothermal adsorption tests were carried out on all samples. The results show that the custom experimental system can be used to effectively study the effect of mechanical-thermal interaction on the nanoscale pores in closed coal. Before and after the experiment, the Langmuir volume increases, and the methane adsorption capacity increases. The specific surface area and pore volume of the micropores (<1 nm) decrease, but the specific surface area and pore volume of the pores (6-100 nm) increase. The specific surface area and pore volume of the micropores (<1 nm) are negatively correlated with the temperature and decrease with increasing temperature. Fractal analysis results show that under the influence of temperature and pressure, the heterogeneity of the nanoscale pore structure and the roughness of the pore surface increase. This research is of important theoretical significance for the safe mining of deep coal seams and for the development of coalbed methane resources.

BACKGROUND: The Solitaire AB stent is one of many assistant stents used for treating wide-necked cerebral aneurysm, and has been used since 2003. However, large sample studies on its safety and effectiveness are lacking. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of the Solitaire AB stent in the coil embolization of wide-necked cerebral aneurysms. METHODS: Retrospective review of the clinical and image data of 116 patients with wide-necked cerebral aneurysms who had been enrolled at six interventional neuroradiology centers from February 2010 to February 2014 and had been treated by coil embolization; in total, 120 Solitaire AB stents were used. The degree of aneurysm occlusion was examined using digital subtraction angiography (DSA) immediately after the procedure and during follow-up, and was graded using the modified Raymond classification. We also observed complications to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of this therapy. RESULTS: The 120 Solitaire AB stents (4 mm × 15 mm, four stents; 4 mm × 20 mm, 16 stents; 6 mm × 20 mm, 36 stents; 6 mm × 30 mm, 64 stents) were inserted to treat 120 wide-necked cerebral aneurysms. All stents were inserted successfully. DSA immediately post-surgery revealed 55 cases of complete occlusion, 59 cases of neck remnant, and six cases of aneurysm remnant. Perioperatively, there were four cases of hemorrhage and four cases of stent thrombosis. The follow-up spanned 3-37 months; of 92 patients examined by DSA at the 6-month follow up, 12 had disease recurrence. CONCLUSIONS: The Solitaire AB stent is effective with a good technical success rate and short-term effect for assisting coil embolization of wide-necked cerebral aneurysms.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of simulated nitrogen-oxygen saturation exposure at a water depth of 50 m on the expression of inflammatory mediators including interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-10 (IL-10), and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) in the external auditory canal (EAC) of rabbits. METHODS: Two batches of New Zealand rabbits were exposed to nitrogen-oxygen saturated at a water depth of 50 m. After exposure, the epithelial tissue in the EAC was analyzed using hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining, and the changes in expression of inflammatory mediators including IL-6, IL-10, and TNF-α in the EAC of rabbits were determined by real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). RESULTS: According to the result of HE staining, more inflammatory cell infiltration, small vascular congestion, and mucosal edema in the EAC of rabbits were observed in the exposure group than in the control group. Additionally, compared with the control group, the exposure group had increased expression of IL-6 and TNF-α and reduced expression of IL-10 in the EAC of rabbits according to the result of real-time PCR. CONCLUSION: The nitrogen-oxygen saturation exposure at a water depth of 50 m can cause inflammatory injuries in the EAC of rabbits. The mechanism may be associated with increased expression of IL-6 and TNF-α and reduced expression of IL-10.

Stem cells are a population of cells that has infinite or long-term self-renewal ability and can produce various kinds of descendent cells. Transforming growth factor ß (TGF-ß) family is a superfamily of growth factors, including TGF-ß1, TGF-ß2 and TGF-ß3, bone morphogenetic proteins, activin/inhibin, and some other cytokines such as nodal, which plays very important roles in regulating a wide variety of biological processes, such as cell growth, differentiation, cell death. TGF-ß, a pleiotropic cytokine, has been proved to be differentially involved in the regulation of multi-lineage differentiation of stem cells, through the Smad pathway, non-Smad pathways including mitogen-activated protein kinase pathways, phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase/AKT pathways and Rho-like GTPase signaling pathways, and their cross-talks. For instance, it is generally known that TGF-ß promotes the differentiation of stem cells into smooth muscle cells, immature cardiomyocytes, chondrocytes, neurocytes, hepatic stellate cells, Th17 cells, and dendritic cells. However, TGF-ß inhibits the differentiation of stem cells into myotubes, adipocytes, endothelial cells, and natural killer cells. Additionally, TGF-ß can provide competence for early stages of osteoblastic differentiation, but at late stages TGF-ß acts as an inhibitor. The three mammalian isoforms (TGF-ß1, 2 and 3) have distinct but overlapping effects on hematopoiesis. Understanding the mechanisms underlying the regulatory effect of TGF-ß in the stem cell multi-lineage differentiation is of importance in stem cell biology, and will facilitate both basic research and clinical applications of stem cells. In this article, we discuss the current status and progress in our understanding of different mechanisms by which TGF-ß controls multi-lineage differentiation of stem cells.

Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) have attracted the attention of scientists and clinicians due to their self-renewal, capacity for multipotent differentiation, and immunomodulatory properties. Some essential problems remain to be solved before the clinical application of MSC. Platelet lysate (PL) has recently been used as a substitute for FBS in MSC amplification in vitro to achieve clinically applicable numbers of MSC. In addition to promising trials in regenerative medicine, such as in the treatment of major bone defects and myocardial infarction, MSC have shown therapeutic effect other than direct hematopoiesis support in hematopoietic reconstruction. It has been confirmed that MSC promote hematopoietic cell engraftment and immune recovery after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, probably through the provision of cytokines, matrix proteins, and cell-to-cell contacts. Their suppressive effects on immune cells, including T cells, B cells, NK cells and DC cells, suggest MSCs as a novel therapy for GVHD and other autoimmune disorders. These cells thus present as promising candidates for cellular therapy in the fields of regenerative medicine, allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, and autoimmune disorders.
