Background: Red cell distribution width (RDW) may be related to the prognosis of hip fractures. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between (RDW) and all-cause mortality in elderly hip fractures. Materials and Methods: Elderly patients aged ≥65 years who had a hip fracture were screened between January 1, 2015, and September 30, 2019. The age, gender of patients and other demographics, as well as history of allergy, injury mechanism, underlying illnesses at the time of admission, fracture classification, time from admission to operation, RDW, operation time, blood loss, infusion, transfusion, treatment strategy, and length in hospital stay and follow-up and other clinical characteristics were collected. Linear and nonlinear multivariate Cox regression models were used to identify the association between RDW and mortality in these patients. Analyses were performed using EmpowerStats and the R software. Results: A total of 2587 patients were included in this retrospective cohort study. The mean follow-up period was 38.92 months. A total of 873 (33.75%) patients died due to all-cause mortality. The RDW was linearly associated with mortality in elderly patients with hip fractures. Linear multivariate Cox regression models showed that RDW was associated with mortality (hazard ratio [HR]=1.03, 95% confidence interval [CI]:1.02-1.05, P < 0.0001) after adjusting for confounding factors. The mortality risk increased by 3% when RDW increased by 1 fL. Conclusion: RDW is associated with mortality in elderly patients with hip fractures, and RDW could be considered a predictor of mortality risk. Registration: ChiCTR2200057323.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to assess the feasibility and outcomes of standardized three-dimensional (3D)-printed trabecular titanium (TT) cups and augments to reconstruct most acetabular defects. METHODS: We included 58 patients with Paprosky type II and III acetabular bone defects who underwent revision hip arthroplasty between 2015 and 2018. Patients who were revised without 3D-printed augments, and cases who were lost to follow-up and died during follow-up were excluded. Radiographic and clinical outcomes were evaluated. A Kaplan-Meier survivorship curve was generated. The mean follow-up was 64.5 (range 49-84) months. RESULTS: In total, 48 (82.8%) acetabular revisions were performed using standardized 3D-printed TT cups and augments, and a retrospective review was conducted on 43 revisions. The average position of the vertical center of rotation and leg length discrepancy were significantly decreased from 42.4 ± 9.1 mm and 38.4 ± 10.7 mm to 22.8 ± 3.4 mm and 4.1 ± 3.0 mm, respectively. Non-progressive radiolucent lines were observed in 3 (7.5%) acetabular components with no indications for revision. The mean Harris hip score, Oxford hip score and EuroQol five-dimensional questionnaire score increased from 33.0 ± 10.7, 11.4 ± 3.4 and 0.29 ± 0.09 to 80.3 ± 8.8, 35.8 ± 2.4 and 0.71 ± 0.10, respectively. The revision-free survival rate of the acetabular component was 93.0% (40/43), with a rate of revision for aseptic loosening of 2.3% (1/43). CONCLUSION: Standardized 3D­printed TT augments and cups could be used to reconstruct the majority of Paprosky type II and III acetabular defects in revision hip arthroplasty and demonstrated encouraging results at mid-term follow-up.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the molluscicidal effect of black plastic mulching in mountainous areas of Yunnan Province. METHODS: In Leqiu Village, Nanjian County, Yunnan Province, the terraced fields with Oncomelania hupensis snails were divided into A, B, C, D, E groups, and of which, A, B, C, D groups, as the experimental groups, were administered with simple black plastic mulching for 30 days, 60 days, 90 days and 120 days respectively; Group E, as the control group, was administered with 50% niclosamide ethanolamine salt wettable powder spraying. RESULTS: In Group C and D (simple black film mulching for 90 days and 120 days), no snails were found after the administration, the average density of living snails decreased by 100%, and the cost of one year was similar to that of the control group. CONCLUSION: The molluscicidal effect of black plastic mulching is good in mountainous areas.
