RESUMO

Biochar is a by-product of thermochemical conversion of biomass or other carbonaceous materials. Recently, it has garnered extensive attention for its high application potential in microbial fuel cell (MFC) systems owing to its high conductivity and low cost. However, the effects of biochar on MFC system performance have not been comprehensively reviewed, thereby necessitating the evaluation of the efficacy of biochar application in MFCs. In this review, biochar characteristics were outlined based on recent publications. Subsequently, various applications of biochar in the MFC systems and their probable processes were summarized. Finally, proposals for future applications of biochar in MFCs were explored along with its perspectives and an environmental evaluation in the context of a circular economy. The purpose of this review is to gain comprehensive insights into the application of biochar in the MFC systems, offering important viewpoints on the effective and steady utilization of biochar in MFCs for practical application.

RESUMO

Species of the genus Russula are key components of ectomycorrhizal ecosystems worldwide, some of which are famous edible fungi. Although many new species have been described in China, their diversity in North China is still poorly known. Based on the morphology observation of specimens and molecular phylogenetic analyses, combined with the current classification frame of Russula, six new species of Russula subgenus Russula are proposed from the Yanshan Mountains in northern Beijing and northern Hebei Province of China in this study: viz. Russula miyunensis (subsection Chamaeleontinae), R. plana (subsection Chamaeleontinae), R. sinoparva (subsection Puellarinae), R. sinorobusta (subsection Puellarinae), R. subversatilis (subsection Roseinae), and R. yanshanensis (subsection Puellarinae). This is the first report of the species of Russula subgenus Russula from the Yanshan Mountains. This study enriches the species diversity of Russula in North China and provides new data support for the systematic study of Russula in subsequent research, including research and development on edibility.

Authentic leadership is essential for predicting employee resilience. However, despite fruitful findings, more adapted models of authentic leadership - employee resilience based on empirical findings can serve as a guide to understand the complex mediators and moderators in different industries such as in construction engineering project organizations during the turbulent pandemic. This study, therefore, based on the organizational identification theory and flow theory through the lens of positive organizational psychology, aims to disentangle the authentic leadership-employee resilience association by investigating their underlying mechanism and their boundary condition. To test our hypothetical model, we applied a cross-sectional design with data collected from a large sample of 884 employees from a big enterprise in China. Findings from confirmatory factor analysis, structural equation modeling analysis, and Hayes's conditional process model indicated that: authentic leadership positively predicted employee resilience through the partial mediation effect of organizational identification, and such a mediation model was moderated by the experience of flow. In other words, flow moderated the relationships between authentic leadership, organizational identification, and employee resilience. Findings provide evidence for cultivating leaders' authenticity in promoting their subordinates' resilience; findings also highlight the significance of organizational identification in bridging authentic leadership and employee resilience and the essential role of flow experience in supporting the relationships mentioned above.

BACKGROUND: At present, "Belt and Road" ("B&R") member states (accounting for about 61.78% of the world's population) face different types of cancer threats to varying degrees. We analyzed the incidence and mortality and risk factors of cancer in the member countries of the "B&R" to explore the basis of health and medical cooperation between countries and provide a foundation for formulating cancer prevention and control policies for building a healthy "B&R." METHODS: Data were derived from the Global Cancer Observatory and Cancer Country Profiles in 2020. Incidence and mortality were age-standardized rates (ASRs). Population attributable fractions (PAFs) was applied to measure risk factors of cancers in the "B&R" countries. The mortality-to-incidence ratio (MIR) was calculated by dividing the mortality rate by the incidence rate. RESULTS: A total of 26 cancers were included in the study. Lung, breast, colorectal, stomach, liver, prostate, cervical, esophageal, thyroid, and uterine cancers were the most common and highest in age-standardized mortality in the "B&R" countries. For men, Hungary had the highest cancer age-standardized incidence and mortality (ASR, 289.3 per 100,000 and ASR, 235.7 per 100,000, respectively), followed by Latvia (ASR, 288.6 per 100,000 and ASR, 196.5 per 100,000, respectively). In females, the highest incidence rates were estimated in Greece (ASR, 238.7 per 100,000), and the highest mortality rate was Brunei (ASR, 192.3 per 100,000). All countries were in the middle or high HDI range, with about half (46.88%) of countries achieving high HDI, mostly in Central and Eastern Europe (13 countries) and West Asia (10 countries). The United Arab Emirates had the highest MIR in male and female (1.59 vs 2.19). Tobacco products, infectious factors, and ultraviolet rays were the three main cancer risk factors in the "B&R" countries. CONCLUSION: The overall burden of cancer in the countries along the "B&R" remains substantial, while the corresponding cancer prevention and control policies need to be improved. Strengthening health cooperation among member countries will contribute to a joint response to the risks and challenges posed by cancer.

Introduction: Cancer is a major health problem in China. Integrated interventions have been implemented in key areas of Anhui, Henan, Jiangsu, and Shandong provinces with historically higher than average cancer mortality. Assessing the cancer mortality trend and its impact on life expectancy (LE) could help evaluate the effectiveness of interventions in these regions. Methods: Based on the National Cause-of-Death Surveillance, we analyzed the standardized mortality rate (SMR) of cancer, cause eliminated life expectancy (CELE), potential gains in life expectancy (PGLEs), and rate of life lost in key areas of 4 provinces from 2008 to 2018. Joinpoint program was used to compute the average annual percentage change (AAPC) of cancer mortality. Arriaga's decomposition method was used to estimate the contribution of cancer to LE in each age group. Results: From 2008 to 2018, cancer SMR decreased in the study region (AAPC=-3.09%, P<0.001), which increased LE. The positive effect was the greatest in the 75-79 age group (0.120 years, 2.90%), and the negative effect was the greatest in the 50-54 age group (-0.094 years, -2.20%). Compared to 2008, cancer CELE increased by 3.95 years, PGLEs increased by 0.32 years, and rate of life lost increased by 0.21% in 2018. Conclusions: Cancer SMR decreased in key areas of 4 provinces from 2008 to 2018. This change had a positive effect on the increase of LE. However, the rate of life lost due to cancer increased. Integrated interventions should continue to further reduce the cancer burden.

The residues of organophosphorus pesticides have caused the potential risk in environment and human health, arousing worldwidely great concern. Herein, we fabricated a robust gold nanoclusters/MnO2 composites-based hydrogel portable kit for accurate monitoring of paraoxon residues and degradation in Chinese cabbages. With the immobilization of gold nanoclusters/MnO2 composites into a hydrogel, a ratiometric fluorescent signal is generated by catalyzing the oxidation of o-phenylenediamine, which possesses a built-in correction with low background interference. Coupling with acetylcholinesterase catalytic reactions and pesticide inhibition effect, the portable kit can sensitively detect paraoxon residues with a detection limit of 5.0 ng mL-1. For on-site quantification, the fluorescent color variations of portable kit are converted into digital information that exhibits applicative linear range toward pesticide. Notably, the hydrogel portable kit was successfully applied for precisely monitoring the residue and degradation of paraoxon in Chinese cabbage, providing a potential pathway toward practical point-of-care testing in food safety monitoring.

The construction of new-type urbanization with the theme of innovation, green, and smart development is becoming the endogenous driving force of China's economic transformation and upgrading, and green technological innovation is a key factor in cracking the problems of development motivation and environmental constraints in urbanization construction. This paper investigates the impact of green technology innovation on urbanization based on a panel dataset covering 30 provinces in China from 2005 to 2019. First, we use the entropy method and the super-efficiency DEA method to measure the level of urbanization and green technology innovation, respectively. Moreover, on this basis, we use panel regression model and FGLS model to estimate the direct impact of green technological innovation on urbanization and its three dimensions-population urbanization, industrial urbanization, and ecological urbanization. Then, the mediating effect model is used to further study the indirect impact of green technological innovation on urbanization. The results indicate that green technological innovation is the most effective way to promote the development of new urbanization currently. In addition, green technology innovation can indirectly affect urbanization through the effects of foreign capital, energy consumption and information development, while the effect of industrial structure optimization effects is not significant. Finally, some policy suggestions are discussed to better promote the development of urbanization in China.

Nagrajomyces (incertae sedis, Ascomycota) is a monotypic genus with a previously unknown systematic position. In this report, two new species are proposed, Nagrajomycesfusiformis and Nagrajomyceslaojunshanensis. These new taxa are proposed based on morphological characteristics evident via light microscopy and molecular data. Multi-locus phylogenetic analyses (ITS rDNA, nrLSU rDNA, RPB2, and TEF1-α) show that specimens recently collected in Yunnan Province, China are closely related to Gnomoniaceae. Both new species and known species were discovered repeatedly in their asexual developmental form exclusively on twigs of Rhododendron spp. (Ericaceae). This indicates a host specificity of Nagrajomyces spp. for species of Rhododendron.

The main active ingredients of the fruiting bodies of Shiraia bambusicola and Rubroshiraia bambusae are Hypocrellins, belonging perylenequinones with potential photodynamic activity against cancer and microbial diseases. However, the strains of S. bambusicola and R. bambusae do not produce hypocrellins in culture, so resource exploitation of natural products was seriously restricted. In this study, a series of novel Shiraia-like fungal endophyte strains, with varying sporulation ability and synthesizing diverse secondary metabolites, was isolated from different bamboos. Based on phylogenetic analyses and morphological characteristics of the endophytes, Pseudoshiraia conidialis gen. et sp. nov. is proposed. The secondary metabolites of different fruiting bodies and strains have been comprehensively analyzed for the first time, finding that the endophytic strains are shown not only to produce hypocrellins, but also other perylenequinonoid compounds. It was noteworthy that the highest yield of total perylenequinone production and hypocrellin A appeared in P. conidialis CNUCC 1353PR (1410.13 mg/L), which was significantly higher than any other wild type P. conidialis strains in published reports. In view of these results, the identification of Shiraia-like endophytes not only confirm the phylogenetic status of similar strains, but will further assist in developing the production of valuable natural products.

Twenty-seven Colletotrichum isolates associated with asymptomatic tissues of bamboo (Bambusoideae, Gramineae) were isolated from Anhui, Beijing, and Guangxi in China. Based on multilocus (internal transcribed spacer [ITS], glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase [GAPDH], chitin synthase [CHS], actin [ACT], beta-tubulin [TUB2]) phylogenetic analyses and morphological characteristics, three species were distinguished, including two novel species, C. bambusicola and C. guangxiense, and one known species, C. metake, which is a first report for China. These species have hitherto only been discovered on Bambusoideae, indicating that they probably have host preference.

Chitooligosaccharides (COS) have a variety of biological activities due to their positively charged amino groups. Studies have shown that COS have antidiabetic effects, but their molecular mechanism has not been fully elucidated. The present study confirmed that COS can reduce hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia, prevent obesity, and enhance histological changes in the livers of mice with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Additionally, treatment with COS can modulate the composition of the gut microbiota in the colon by altering the abundance of Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, and Proteobacteria. Furthermore, in T2DM mice, treatment with COS can upregulate the cholesterol-degrading enzymes cholesterol 7-alpha-hydroxylase (CYP7A1) and incretin glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) while specifically inhibiting the transcription and expression of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase (HMGCR), the key enzyme in cholesterol synthesis. Furthermore, using an oleic acid-induced hepatocyte steatosis model, we found that HMGCR can be directly transactivated by SET and MYND domain containing 3 (SMYD3), a transcriptional regulator, via 5'-CCCTCC-3' element in the promoter. Overexpression of SMYD3 can suppress the inhibitory effect of COS on HMGCR, and COS might regulate HMGCR by inhibiting SMYD3, thereby exerting hypolipidemic functions. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first to illustrate that COS mediate glucose and lipid metabolism disorders by regulating gut microbiota and SMYD3-mediated signaling pathways.

TMPOP2 was previously suggested to be an oncogenic long noncoding RNA which is excessively expressed in cervical cancer cells and inhibits E-cadherin gene expression by recruiting transcription repressor EZH2 to the gene promoter. So far, the function and regulation of TMPOP2 in cervical cancer remain largely unknown. Herein, we found that TMPOP2 expression was correlated with human papillomavirus 16/18 (HPV16/18) E6 and E7 in cervical cancer cell lines CaSki and HeLa. Tumor suppressor p53, which is targeted for degradation by HPV16/18, was demonstrated to associate with two p53 response elements in the TMPOP2 promoter to repress the transcription of the TMPOP2 gene. Reciprocally, ectopic expression of TMPOP2 was demonstrated to sequester tumor repressor microRNAs (miRNAs) miR-375 and miR-139 which target HPV16/18 E6/E7 mRNA and resulted in an upregulation of HPV16/18 E6/E7 genes. Thereby, HPV16/18 E6/E7 and the long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) TMPOP2 form a positive feedback loop to mutually derepress gene expression in cervical cancer cells. Moreover, results of RNA sequencing and cell cycle analysis showed that knockdown of TMPOP2 impaired the expression of cell cycle genes, induced cell cycle arrest, and inhibited HeLa cell proliferation. Together, our results indicate that TMPOP2 and HPV16/18 E6/E7 mutually strengthen their expression in cervical cancer cells to enhance tumorigenic activities.IMPORTANCE Human papillomaviruses 16 and 18 (HPV16/18) are the main causative agents of cervical cancer. Viral proteins HPV16/18 E6 and E7 are constitutively expressed in cancer cells to maintain oncogenic phenotypes. Accumulating evidences suggest that HPVs are correlated with the deregulation of long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) in cervical cancer, although the mechanism was unexplored in most cases. TMPOP2 is a newly identified lncRNA excessively expressed in cervical cancer. However, the mechanism for the upregulation of TMPOP2 in cervical cancer cells remains largely unknown and its relationship with HPVs is still elusive. The significance of our research is in revealing the mutual upregulation of HPV16/18 E6/E7 and TMPOP2 with the molecular mechanisms explored. This study will expand our understandings of the oncogenic activities of human papillomaviruses and lncRNAs.

Sulforaphane (SFN), a natural compound derived from cruciferous vegetables, has been proved to possess potent anti-cancer activity. SMYD3 is a histone methyltransferase which is closely related to the proliferation and migration of cancer cells. This study showed that SFN could dose-dependently induce cell cycle arrest, stimulate apoptosis, and inhibit proliferation and migration of gastric carcinoma cells. Accompanied with these anti-cancer effects, SMYD3 and its downstream genes, myosin regulatory light chain 9, and cysteine-rich angiogenic inducer 61, was downregulated by SFN. Furthermore, overexpression of SMYD3 via transfection could abolish the effects of SFN, suggesting that SMYD3 might be an important mediator of SFN. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report describing the role of SMYD3 in the anti-cancer of SFN. These findings might throw light on the development of novel anti-cancer drugs and functional food using SFN-rich cruciferous vegetables.

Magnetic-fluorescent bifunctional materials have received global attention owing to their potential in many fields. Herein, we reported a novel magnetic-fluorescent bifunctional Janus nanofiber membrane (NFM) by adding the as-prepared magnetic CoFe2O4 nanoparticles into the polyacrylonitrile (PAN) side (m-PAN) and the fluorescent molecules of 1,8-naphthalene anhydride (1,8-NAD) into the polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) side (f-PVP) via electrospinning method. The obtained m-PAN/f-PVP Janus NFM exhibited excellent magnetic performance and high fluorescent properties due to the unique structure. Compared with the m-PAN/f-PVP composite NFM, the Janus NFM showed higher fluorescent performance because the fluorescent molecules were isolated from the magnetic nanoparticles. In addition, the Janus NFM not only maintain the good self-supporting state in water but also realize a directional movement attracted by a magnet. The unique structure of Janus nanofiber is of great importance and demonstrates great potential applications.

PURPOSE: We previously found that the histone methyltransferase suppressor of variegation, enhancer of zeste, trithorax and myeloid-nervy-deformed epidermal autoregulatory factor-1 domain-containing protein 3 (SMYD3) is a potential independent predictive factor or prognostic factor for overall survival in gastric cancer patients, but its roles seem to differ from those in other cancers. Therefore, in this study, the detailed functions of SMYD3 in cell proliferation and migration in gastric cancer were examined. MATERIALS AND METHODS: SMYD3 was overexpressed or suppressed by transfection with an expression plasmid or siRNA, and a wound healing migration assay and Transwell assay were performed to detect the migration and invasion ability of gastric cancer cells. Additionally, an MTT assay and clonogenic assay were performed to evaluate cell proliferation, and a cell cycle analysis was performed by propidium iodide staining. Furthermore, the expression of genes implicated in the ataxia telangiectasia mutated (ATM) pathway and proteins involved in cell cycle regulation were detected by polymerase chain reaction and western blot analyses. RESULTS: Compared with control cells, gastric cancer cells transfected with si-SMYD3 showed lower migration and invasion abilities (P<0.05), and the absence of SMYD3 halted cells in G2/M phase and activated the ATM pathway. Furthermore, the opposite patterns were observed when SMYD3 was elevated in normal gastric cells. CONCLUSIONS: To the best of our knowledge, this study provides the first evidence that the absence of SMYD3 could inhibit the migration, invasion, and proliferation of gastric cancer cells and halt cells in G2/M phase via the ATM-CHK2/p53-Cdc25C pathway. These findings indicated that SMYD3 plays crucial roles in the proliferation, migration, and invasion of gastric cancer cells and may be a useful therapeutic target in human gastric carcinomas.

Materials with Janus structures have attracted significant attention in recent years. Here, we fabricated a novel type of Janus ultrafine fiber membrane (UFM) by designing a spinneret via electrospinning and polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) Janus ultrafine fibers were successfully obtained at a large scale. The morphology, chemical composition, and solubility of the PAN/PVP Janus UFM in water were studied in detail via scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Compared to a PAN/PVP composite UFM, the Janus UFM exhibited significant self-supporting properties when the PVP side was dissolved in water, which was attributed to the PAN side still maintaining the required net structure. Two fluorescent molecules were added to the Janus UFM to enable further characterization. The applicability of this PAN/PVP Janus UFM as a drug carrier was investigated. The results indicated ideal biphasic drug release features in the Janus UFM and that the addition of fluorescent dyes can be used to track the process of drug release. The good self-supporting properties and the biphasic drug release feature indicate the broad applicability of the PAN/PVP Janus UFM.

Hawthorn is a berry-like fruit from the species of Crataegus. In China, it has another more famous name, Shan-Zha, which has been used to improve digestion as a traditional Chinese medicine or food for thousands of years. Moreover, during the last decades, hawthorn has received more attention because of its potential to treat cardiovascular diseases. However, currently, only fruits of C. pinnatifida and C. pinnatifida var. major are included as Shan-Zha in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia. In this study, our results showed that the ethanol extract of Zhongtian hawthorn, a novel grafted cultivar of C. cuneata (wild Shan-Zha), could markedly reduce body weight and levels of serum total cholesterol, triglyceride, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and liver cholesterol of hyperlipidemia mice. It could suppress the stimulation effect of high-fat diet on the transcription of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA reductase (HMGCR) and p65, and counteract the downregulation of CYP7A1 and LDLR. In addition, the results of luciferase reporter assay and Western blot showed that the transcriptional activity of HMGCR promoter was inhibited by Zhongtian hawthorn ethanol extract in a dose-dependent manner, while overexpression of p65 could reverse this transcriptional repression effect. These results suggested that Zhongtian hawthorn could provide health benefits by counteracting the high-fat diet-induced hypercholesteolemic and hyperlipidemic effects in vivo, and the mechanism underlying this event was mainly dependent on the suppressive effect of Zhongtian hawthorn ethanol extract on the transcription of HMGCR via nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) signal pathway. Therefore, this novel cultivar of hawthorn cultivar which has much bigger fruits, early bearing, high yield, cold resistance, and drought resistance, might be considered as a good alternative to Shan-Zha and has great value in the food and medicine industry. In addition, to our best knowledge, this is also the first report that the extract of Crataegus could suppress the transcription of HMGCR via NF-κB signal pathway.
