RESUMO

Offshore areas are particularly important in recognizing microplastics pollution because they are sinks of land imports and sources of ocean microplastics. This study investigated the pollution and distribution of microplastics in the offshore Sea, rivers and wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Jiangsu coastal area in China. Results showed that microplastics were widely present in the offshore area, with an average abundance of 3.1-3.5 items/m3. Significantly higher abundance was present in rivers (3.7-5.9 item/m3), municipal WWTPs (13.7 ± 0.5 item/m3), and industrial WWTPs (19.7 ± 1.2 item/m3). The proportion of small-sized microplastics (1-3 mm) increased from WWTPs (53%) to rivers (64%) and the offshore area (53%). Polyamide (PA), polyethylene (PE), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS), and rayon (RA) were dominant types of microplastics. Both living and industrial sources contributed to the prevalent microplastics in the offshore Sea. Redundancy analysis showed that small-sized microplastics (1-3 mm) were positively correlated to total phosphorus (TP), while large-sized microplastics (3-5 mm) were positively correlated to TP and NH3-N. The abundance of PE, PP and PVC microplastics were positively correlated to TP and total nitrogen (TN), thus nutrients could be indicators of microplastics pollution in the offshore area.

RESUMO

Although people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) are known to be vulnerable to psychological distress (PD), little is known about the prevalence of PD among PLWHA. A systematic literature search of several databases was conducted from inception to August 2021 focusing on studies reporting on PD symptoms among PLWHA. The overall prevalence estimates were pooled using a random-effects meta-analysis. Differences according to study-level characteristics were examined using stratified meta-analysis. We pooled and analyzed data from 15 studies comprising 5593 PLWHA. The prevalence rate of PD among PLWHA was 43.7% (95% Confidence Interval: 29.9-57.5%). Subgroup analyses by gender, country, CD4 count, employment status and ever attended school found no statistically significant differences in the prevalence of PD. Heterogeneity in the prevalence of PD among PLWHA was partially explained by the assessment tool. Further large-scale studies of high quality are warranted to identify risk factors of PD in PLWHA in their respective socio-cultural contexts.

RESUMO

Despite severe threats of extracellular antibiotic resistance genes (eARGs) towards public health in various environments, advanced studies have been hindered mainly by ineffective extracellular DNA (exDNA) extraction methods, which is challenged by trace levels of exDNA and inference from abundant coexisting compounds. This study developed a highly selective exDNA extraction method based on molecular imprinting technology (MIT) by using adenine as the template for the first time. Results suggested that adenine imprinted beads were rough spheres at an average size of 0.39 ± 0.07 µm. They effectively adsorbed DNA in the absence of chaotropic agents, with superior capacity (796.2 mg/g), rate (0.0066/s) and regarding DNA of variable lengths, even the ultra-short DNA (<100 bp). They were also highly selective towards DNA, circumventing the interference of competitive compounds' interference. These properties contribute to efficient exDNA extraction (71 %-119 %) from various environmental samples. Specifically, adenine imprinted beads enabled significantly higher extraction rates of eARGs from river, air and vegetable samples (69 %-95 %) compared to that by commercial DNA extraction products (16 %-62 %). The adenine imprinted beads-based method reveals underestimated eARG levels in the environment and the corresponding risks, and thus will thus be a powerful tool for advanced exDNA research.

RESUMO

Microplastics (MPs) are an emerging global concern as they are abundant in the environment and can act as vectors of various contaminants. However, whether and how MPs can be vectors of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), especially extracellular ARGs (eARGs), remains far from explicit. This study addresses the adsorption of both intracellular ARGs (iARGs) and eARGs by four types of MPs in municipal wastewater, and then explores the potential horizontal gene transfer of iARGs and eARGs exposed to MPs. Results indicate that though MPs significantly adsorbed both iARGs and eARGs, eARGs were adsorbed with a significantly higher fold enrichment (2.0-5.0 log versus 2.0-3.3 log) and rate (0.0056 min-1 versus 0.0037 min-1) than iARGs. While all four types of MPs adsorbed ARGs, polypropylene MPs showed the highest adsorption capacity for ARGs. Background constituents such as humic acid and antibiotics significantly inhibited adsorption of iARGs, but not eARGs on MPs. The presence of sodium chloride didn't significantly affect adsorption of iARGs or eARGs. The adsorption of ARGs was well explained by the extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (XDLVO) interaction energy profile. Higher eARG adsorption was attributed to a lower energy barrier between MPs and eARGs than that between MPs and iARGs. Exposure to MPs enhanced horizontal gene transfer of both iARGs and eARGs by 1.5 and 2.0 times, respectively. The improved contact potential between donors and recipients, as well as the increased cell permeability of recipients induced the improved horizontal gene transfer by MPs. This study underscores the need to address ARG propagation through adsorption to MPs.
