RESUMO

Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a crucial technique for extracting high­throughput information from various sources, including medical images, pathological images, and genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics data. AI has been widely used in the field of diagnosis, for the differentiation of benign and malignant ovarian cancer (OC), and for prognostic assessment, with favorable results. Notably, AI­based radiomics has proven to be a non­invasive, convenient and economical approach, making it an essential asset in a gynecological setting. The present study reviews the application of AI in the diagnosis, differentiation and prognostic assessment of OC. It is suggested that AI­based multi­omics studies have the potential to improve the diagnostic and prognostic predictive ability in patients with OC, thereby facilitating the realization of precision medicine.

RESUMO

The substantial production of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) products, coupled with high abandonment rates, results in significant environmental pollution and resource wastage. This has prompted global attention to the development of rational strategies for PET waste treatment. In the context of renewability and sustainability, catalytic chemical technology provides an effective means to recycle and upcycle PET waste into valuable resources. In this review, we initially provide an overview of strategies employed in the thermocatalytic process to recycle PET waste into valuable carbon materials, fuels and typical refined chemicals. The effect of catalysts on the quality and quantity of specific products is highlighted. Next, we introduce the development of renewable-energy-driven electrocatalytic and photocatalytic systems for sustainable PET waste upcycling, focusing on rational catalysts, innovative catalytic system design, and corresponding underlying catalytic mechanisms. Moreover, we discuss advantages and disadvantages of three chemical catalytic strategies. Finally, existing limitations and outlook toward controllable selectivity and yield enhancement of value-added products and PET upvaluing technology for scale-up applications are proposed. This review aims to inspire the exploration of waste-to-treasure technologies for renewable-energy-driven waste management toward a circular economy.

Stem cells have self-renewal, replication, and multidirectional differentiation potential, while progenitor cells are undifferentiated, pluripotent or specialized stem cells. Stem/progenitor cells secrete various factors, such as cytokines, exosomes, non-coding RNAs, and proteins, and have a wide range of applications in regenerative medicine. However, therapies based on stem cells and their secreted exosomes present limitations, such as insufficient source materials, mature differentiation, and low transplantation success rates, and methods addressing these problems are urgently required. Ultrasound is gaining increasing attention as an emerging technology. Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) has mechanical, thermal, and cavitation effects and produces vibrational stimuli that can lead to a series of biochemical changes in organs, tissues, and cells, such as the release of extracellular bodies, cytokines, and other signals. These changes can alter the cellular microenvironment and affect biological behaviors, such as cell differentiation and proliferation. Here, we discuss the effects of LIPUS on the biological functions of stem/progenitor cells, exosomes, and non-coding RNAs, alterations involved in related pathways, various emerging applications, and future perspectives. We review the roles and mechanisms of LIPUS in stem/progenitor cells and exosomes with the aim of providing a deeper understanding of LIPUS and promoting research and development in this field.

Chronic intrauterine hypoxia (ICH) may lead to permanent alterations in the offspring's body structure, function, and metabolism through the "developmental programming" pathway, resulting in lasting changes in physiology and metabolism, as well as the onset of adult-onset diseases. The aim was to investigate intrauterine growth restriction caused by ICH and its effect on ovarian reserve function in female offspring at different developmental stages after birth. Healthy female Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 20) were pregnant by normal mating, and the rats in the ICH group were treated with chronic intrauterine hypoxia twice a day for 04 h00 each time from day 4 to 21 of gestation. After the first hypoxic treatment, four pregnant rats were randomly selected from the ICH and natural control groups for arterial blood gas analysis. In the ICH group, birth weight and body weight on the 5th day after birth were less than in the control group, the total number of follicles and the number of primordial follicles in the offspring of the ICH group were significantly reduced on postnatal days 5, 20, and 40 (p < 0.05). ICH decreases ovarian reserve function in female offspring rats and programmatically regulates the differential expression of ovarian miRNAs in female offspring rats.

This meta-analytical study compared the efficacy of cryoablation and radiofrequency ablation (RFA) in treating non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). We searched PubMed, Cochrane, Embase, and Web of Science™ for all relevant articles published until April 2022 that compared the efficacy of RFA and cryoablation in treating NSCLC. We used the Cochrane evaluation tool to assess the risk of bias. The fixed- or random-effects models were used, when appropriate. The primary outcome was a 3-year disease-free survival, whereas recurrence rate and complication rates were secondary outcomes. There were 340 patients divided across the seven studies we included in our meta-analysis. Based on the continuous-type variable analysis, cryoablation was superior to RFA in terms of 3-year disease-free survival (P = 0.003) and complication (P < 0.00001) rates. Similarly, significant reductions in cryoablation were found for recurrence rates (P = 0.05) compared with RFA. Overall, cryoablation was superior to RFA in terms of prognosis and lifespan, regardless of whether systemic metastases occurred in non-small cell lung cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Adenomyosis prevalence among women with infertility is increasing; their management during in vitro fertilization is usually based on ultrasound diagnosis alone. Herein, we summarize the latest evidence on the impact of ultrasound-diagnosed adenomyosis on in vitro fertilization outcomes. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was registered with The International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (CRD42022355584). We searched PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases from inception to January 31, 2023, for cohort studies on the impact of adenomyosis on in vitro fertilization outcomes. Fertility outcomes were compared according to the presence of adenomyosis as diagnosed by ultrasound, concurrent endometriosis and adenomyosis, and MRI-based or MRI- and ultrasound-based adenomyosis diagnosis. Live birth rate was the primary outcome while clinical pregnancy and miscarriage rates were secondary outcomes. RESULTS: Women diagnosed with adenomyosis by ultrasound had lower live birth (odds ratio [OR] = 0.66; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.53-0.82, grade: very low), lower clinical pregnancy (OR = 0.64; 95% CI: 0.53-0.77, grade: very low), and higher miscarriage (OR = 1.81; 95% CI: 1.35-2.44, grade: very low) rates than those without adenomyosis. Notably, symptomatic and diffuse, but not asymptomatic adenomyosis as diagnosed by ultrasound, adversely affected in vitro fertilization outcomes, with lower live birth (OR = 0.57; 95% CI: 0.34-0.96, grade: very low), clinical pregnancy (OR = 0.69; 95% CI: 0.57-0.85, grade: low), and miscarriage (OR = 2.48, 95% CI: 1.28-4.82, grade: low) rates; and lower live birth (OR = 0.37; 95% CI: 0.23-0.59, grade: low) and clinical pregnancy (OR = 0.50; 95% CI: 0.34-0.75, grade: low), but not miscarriage rate (OR = 2.18; 95% CI: 0.72-6.62, grade: very low), respectively. Concurrent adenomyosis in endometriosis is associated with a significantly lower live birth rate (OR = 0.44; 95% CI: 0.26-0.75, grade: low) than endometriosis alone. Finally, the use of MRI-based or MRI- and ultrasound-based adenomyosis diagnosis showed no significant association with in vitro fertilization outcomes (grade: very low for all outcomes). CONCLUSIONS: Considering ultrasound findings, symptoms, and different subtypes of adenomyosis may aid in offering personalized counseling, improving treatment decisions, and achieving better outcomes of in vitro fertilization.

Changes in tissue stiffness by physiological or pathological factors in tissue structure are identified earlier than their clinical features. Pathological processes such as uterine fibrosis, adenomyosis, endometrial lesions, infertility, and premature birth can manifest as tissue elasticity changes. In clinical settings, elastography techniques based on ultrasonography, optical coherence tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging are widely used for noninvasive measurement of mechanical properties in patients, providing valuable tool and information for diagnosis and treatment. Ultrasound elastography (USE) plays a critical role in obstetrics and gynecology clinical work because of its simplicity, non-invasiveness, and repeatability. This article reviews the recent progress of USE in uterine tumor diagnosis (especially early diagnosis and treatment effect evaluation), prediction of preterm birth, and intrauterine insemination. We believe that USE, especially shear wave elastography, may serve as a potential means to assess tissue stiffness, thereby improving the diagnosis and treatment of adenomyosis, fibroids, endometrial lesions, cervical cancer, and precise management of preterm birth and intrauterine insemination monitoring.

Triclocarban (TCC), an antimicrobial ingredient in personal care products, is associated with immunosuppression and physiological dysfunctions of aquatic organisms. The aim of this study was to investigate whether TCC can induce common carp NETosis (neutrophil death by neutrophil extracellular trap (NET) release) and then to attempt to identify the potential molecular mechanisms. Herein, scanning electron microscopy and flow cytometric assays showed that revealed that TCC triggers DNA-containing web-like structures and increases extracellular DNA content. In the proteomic analysis, we observed that NET-related proteins, extracellular regulated protein kinase (Mapk1, Mapk14, Jak2) and apoptotic protein (caspase3) were significantly increased, and defender against cell death 1 (Dad1) was significantly decreased after TCC treatments. Meanwhile, we confirmed that TCC stress can trigger NETosis in common carp by activating the reactive oxygen species (ROS)/ERK1/2/p38 signaling. We think that the upregulated NDUFS1 expression is closely related to oxidative stress induced by TCC. Importantly, we discovered that SIRT3 expression was significantly decreased in the process of TCC-induced NETs. Importantly, pretreatment with the SIRT3 agonist honokiol (HKL) effectively suppressed TCC-induced NET release. In contrast, the SIRT3 antagonist 3-TYP escalated TCC-induced NET formation. Mechanistically, SIRT3 degradation serves as a potential mediator for regulating oxidative stress crosstalk between ERK1/2/p38 signals in the process of TCC-induced NET formation. These findings unveil new insights into the TCC-evoked health risk of fish and other aquatic organisms and suggest that SIRT3 is a potential pharmacological intervention target to alleviate TCC-induced common carp NETosis.

Background: Recently, circulating microRNAs (miRNAs) from maternal blood and amniotic fluid have been used as biomarkers for ventricular septal defect (VSD) diagnosis. However, whether circulating miRNAs are associated with fetal myocardium remains unknown. Methods: Dimethadione (DMO) induced a VSD rat model. The miRNA expression profiles of the myocardium, amniotic fluid and maternal serum were analyzed. Differentially expressed microRNAs (DE-microRNAs) were verified by qRT-PCR. The target gene of miR-1-3p was confirmed by dual luciferase reporter assays. Expression of amniotic fluid-derived DE-microRNAs was verified in clinical samples. Results: MiRNAs were differentially expressed in VSD fetal rats and might be involved in cardiomyocyte differentiation and apoptosis. MiR-1-3p, miR-1b and miR-293-5p were downregulated in the myocardium and upregulated in amniotic fluid/maternal serum. The expression of amniotic fluid-derived DE-microRNAs (miR-1-3p, miR-206 and miR-184) was verified in clinical samples. Dual luciferase reporter assays confirmed that miR-1-3p directly targeted SLC8A1/NCX1. Conclusion: MiR-1-3p, miR-1b and miR-293-5p are downregulated in VSD myocardium and upregulated in circulation and may be released into circulation by cardiomyocytes. MiR-1-3p targets SLC8A1/NCX1 and participates in myocardial apoptosis. MiR-1-3p upregulation in circulation is a direct and powerful indicator of fetal VSD and is expected to serve as a prenatal VSD diagnostic marker.

Photothermal therapy (PTT) has emerged as a promising cancer therapeutic method. In this study, Arg-Gly-Asp (RGD) peptide-conjugated polydopamine-coated gold nanostars (Au@PDA-RGD NPs) were prepared for targeting PTT of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). A polydopamine (PDA) shell was coated on the surface of gold nanostars by the oxidative self-polymerization of dopamine (termed as Au@PDA NPs). Au@PDA NPs were further functionalized with polyethylene glycol and RGD peptide to improve biocompatibility as well as selectivity toward the HCC cells. Au@PDA-RGD NPs showed an intense absorption at 822 nm, which makes them suitable for near-infrared-excited PTT. Our results indicated that the Au@PDA-RGD NPs were effective for the PTT therapy of the αVß3 integrin receptor-overexpressed HepG2 cells in vitro. Further antitumor mechanism studies showed that the Au@PDA-RGD NPs-based PTT induced human liver cancer cells death via the mitochondrial-lysosomal and autophagy pathways. In vivo experiments showed that Au@PDA-RGD NPs had excellent tumor treatment efficiency and negligible side effects. Thus, our study showed that Au@PDA-RGD NPs could offer an excellent nanoplatform for PTT of HCC.

Extensive use of neonicotinoids insecticides (NNIs) rapidly garnered widespread attention in the toxicology, since they have been found in human samples, including urine, blood, breast milk and hair. However, the precise mechanism is not completely clear regarding the NNIs-induced hepatotoxicity. In this study, we exposed male mice to three neonicotinoids (dinotefuran (DIN), nitenpyram (NIT) and acetamiprid (ACET) for 30 days. Our results showed that NNIs remarkably induced morphological damage in the liver. Simultaneously, we found that three neonicotinoids could activate the store operated Ca2+ entry (SOCE) in the liver. Further results confirmed that reactive oxide species (ROS) scavenger n-acetylcysteine (NAC) attenuated DIN-induced calcium ion (Ca2+) overload and S-phase arrest via restoring protein expression of SOCE and S phase related genes in L02 hepatocytes. Moreover, we found that NAC obviously combated mitochondrial dysfunction caused by DIN via restoring mitochondrial membrane potential. Meanwhile, DIN treatment significantly increased pyruvate content, impaired the activities of tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle rate-limiting enzymes and inhibited adenosine triphosphate (ATP) generation, but these effects were reversed by Serca specific activator CDN1163. Collectively, perturbation of redox states can be recognized as the center of S-phase arrest and Ca2+ overload after NNIs exposure. In this regard, Ca2+ homeostasis dysregulation is a causative event of mitochondrial bioenergetic dysfunction in the liver. These data provides a new perspective for understanding NNI-induced hepatotoxicity mechanisms.

Mercury is a naturally occurring element and highly toxic to humans even at a low dosage. Curcumin is a polyphenol found in turmeric (Curcuma longa), widely used as a treatment strategy to improve antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The purpose of this study was to investigate the potential protective mechanisms of curcumin in spleen damage induced by HgCl2. The mice were given curcumin by intragastric administration 2 h before HgCl2 injection for 24 h. At first, splenic transcriptome analysis showed that 3334 genes (2134 up and 1200 down) were differently expressed in HgCl2-induced spleen damage model. Notably, KEGG enrichment showed phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)-AKT might be a key signaling pathways in HgCl2-induced spleen damage. Furthermore, our data demonstrated that HgCl2 could induce autophagic cell death, evidenced by increases the protein expression of PI3K, AKT, LC3-II and p62 and the number of apoptotic cells. Furthermore, we found that curcumin significantly combated autophagic cell death, sodium overload and calcium leak induced by HgCl2. Simultaneously, further studies demonstrated that curcumin significantly activated nuclear factor (erythroid-derived-2)-like 2 (Nrf2) signaling pathway, and subsequent enhancing antioxidant defenses. Taken together, our data indicated that inorganic mercury could result in autophagic cell death, which may be related to the regulation of PI3K-AKT signaling cascades. Furthermore, Nrf2-mediated antioxidant defenses may be the target of curcumin to confers an adaptive survival response to resist spleen damage induced by HgCl2. The present study perfects the mechanism theory of HgCl2-induced spleen damage and provides a way for pharmacological intervention to prevent spleen injury.

Environmental mercury is a concern for coastal ecosystem health, and exerts adverse effects on human health. Despite the growing body of evidence showing the hepatoprotective roles of curcumin on mercury, the knowledge between the macroscopic descriptions and the actual mechanism(s) underlying these processes is getting larger remains elusive. Herein, mice received single injection of mercuric chloride (HgCl2) (5 mg/kg body weight) and/or curcumin (50 mg/kg, body weight, p.o.). Firstly, the results showed curcumin could decline HgCl2-induced up-regulated the levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST). Additionally, we also found that curcumin could suppress inflammatory damage, unbalance of trace elements (including sodium, magnesium, kalium, calcium overload), oxidative burst induced by HgCl2, which could be associated with cytochrome P450 (CYP450) signaling. Secondly, we found that curcumin could prevent HgCl2-induced cell death both in vivo and in vitro. Furthermore, curcumin significantly increased the nuclear translocation of nuclear factor E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) and consequently upregulated the expression of heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1) under HgCl2 treatment. Meanwhile, inhibition of HO-1 by zinc protoporphyria could abolish the cytoprotective effects of curcumin in HgCl2-treated L02 hepatocytes. In conclusion, our data identify that curcumin could enhance Nrf2-mediated HO-1 to upregulate antioxidant ability, which might be associate with CYP450 signaling to suppress liver damage induced by HgCl2. The present study further enriches and perfects the mechanism theory of HgCl2 toxicity and suggest that the CYP450 signaling and Nrf2/HO-1 pathway is important in shedding light on curcumin's hepatoprotective effects in HgCl2 toxicity.

To investigate the feasibility of lung ultrasound in evaluating coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and distinguish the sonographic features between COVID-19 and community-acquired pneumonia (CAP), a total of 12 COVID-19 patients and 20 CAP patients were selected and underwent lung ultrasound. The modified Buda scoring system for interstitial lung disease was used to evaluate the severity and treatment effect of COVID-19 on ultrasonography. The differences between modified lung ultrasound (MLUS) score and high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) Warrick score were analyzed to evaluate their correlation. COVID-19 showed the following sonographic features: thickening (12/12), blurred (9/12), discontinuous (6/12) pleural line; rocket sign (4/12), partially diffused B-line (12/12), completely diffused B-line (10/12), waterfall sign (4/12); C-line sign (5/12); pleural effusion (1/12) and pulmonary balloon (Am line, 1/12). The last two features were rarely seen. Differences of ultrasonic features, including lesion range, lung signs and pneumonia-related complications, between COVID-19 and CAP were statistically significant (p˂ 0.05 or 0.001). MLUS scores (p = 0.006) and HRCT Warrick scores (p = 0.015) increased as the severity of COVID-19 increased. The differences between moderate (29.00 [25.75-37.50]) and severe (43.00 [38.75-47.25]) (p = 0.022) or between moderate and critical (47.50 [44.25-50.00]) (p = 0.002) type COVID-19 were statistically significant, compared with those between severe and critical types. Correlation between MLUS scores and HRCT Warrick scores was positive (r = 0.54, p = 0.048). MLUS scores (Z = 2.61, p = 0.009) and HRCT Warrick scores (Z = 2.63, p = 0.009) of five severe or critical COVID-19 patients significantly decreased as their conditions improved after treatment. The differences of sonographic features between COVID-19 and CAP patients were notable. The MLUS scoring system could be used to evaluate the severity and treatment effect of COVID-19.

AIM: The aim of this study is to investigate if three-dimensional (3D) ultrasonography is a reliable diagnosis method for prenatal tethered cord syndrome (TCS) by measuring fetal conus distance (CD) in comparison to two-dimensional (2D) ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). METHODS: This retrospective study included 468 normal fetuses as control group and 14 TCS fetuses as tethered group. CD were measured by 2D, 3D ultrasonography and MRI, and the reliability and repeatability of CD measurement was compared between two experienced ultrasound specialists or among the multiple measurements for each specialist. RESULTS: The results showed that 3D ultrasonography was superior to 2D ultrasonography in the repeatability of measuring CD. The CD were positively correlated to gestational ages in control group (P < 0.05). The CD of TCS group (-1.342 ± 0.124) was significantly shorter than that of normal control group (0.013 ± 0.965) (P < 0.01). There were no significant differences in the effectiveness of locating conus medullaris and measuring CD between 3D ultrasonography and MRI.Conclusion Measurement of fetal CD with 3D ultrasonography can serve as a reliable and cost-effective prenatal diagnosis method for TCS.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of the combination of gynecologic imaging reporting and data system (GI-RADS) ultrasonographic stratification and three-dimensional contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (3D-CEUS) in order to distinguish malignant from benign ovarian masses. METHODS: In this study, 102 patients with ovarian masses were examined by both two-dimensional ultrasound(2D-US) and 3D-CEUS. Sonographic features of ovarian masses obtained from 3D-CEUS were analyzed and compared with 2D-US. All patients with ovarian masses were confirmed by operational pathology or long-term follow-up results. RESULTS: (1)The Chi-square test and multiple Logistic regression analysis confirmed that there were only eight independent predictors of malignant masses, including thick septa (≥3mm), thick papillary projections(≥7mm), solid areas, presence of ascites, central vascularization, contrast enhancement, distribution of contrast agent, and vascular characteristics of the solid part and their odds ratios which were 5.52, 5.39, 4.94, 4.34, 5.92, 7.44, 6.09, and 7.67, respectively (P<0.05). (2)These eight signs were used to combine the GI-RADS with 3D-CEUS scoring system in which the corresponding value of the area under the curve (AUC) was 0.969, which was superior to using GI-RADS lonely (Z-value=1.64, P<0.025). Using 4 points as the cut-off, the scoring system showed the performance was clearly better than using GI-RADS alone (P<0.05). (3) The Kappa value was 0.872 for two different clinicians with equal experience. CONCLUSIONS: The combination of GI-RADS and 3D-CEUS scoring system would be a more effective method to distinguish malignant from benign ovarian masses.

RESUMO OBJETIVO O objetivo deste estudo é avaliar a eficácia da combinação da estratificação por ultrassonografia usando o Sistema de Relatórios e Dados de Imagem Ginecológica (GI-RADS) e ultrassonografia 3D com contraste (3D-CEUS) para diferenciar massas ovarianas benignas de malignas. METODOLOGIA Neste estudo, 102 pacientes com massas ovarianas foram examinadas usando ultrassonografia bidimensional (2D-US) e 3D-CEUS. As características ultrassonográficas das massas ovarianas obtidas com 3D-CEUS foram analisadas e comparadas com de 2D-US. Todos os pacientes com massas ovarianas tiveram o diagnóstico confirmado pelos resultados de patologia cirúrgica ou acompanhamento de longo prazo. RESULTADOS (1) O teste qui-quadrado e a regressão logística múltipla confirmaram a existência de apenas oito preditores independentes de massas malignas, incluindo septos espessos (≥3mm), projeções papilares espessas (≥7mm), áreas sólidas, presença de ascite, vascularização central, aumento de contraste, distribuição do agente de contraste e características vasculares da parte sólida e suas razões de possibilidades (OR), que foram 5,52, 5,39, 4,94, 4,34, 5,92, 7,44, 6,09 e 7.67, respectivamente (P< 0,05). (2) Esses oito preditores foram utilizados para combinar o GI-RADS com o sistema de escores da 3D-CEUS, para o qual o valor correspondente da área sob a curva (AUC) foi de 0,969, superior ao uso exclusivo do GI-RADS (valor de Z = 1,64, P < 0,025). Usando 4 pontos como corte, o sistema de escores mostrou que o desempenho foi muito melhor do que com o uso exclusivo do GI-RADS (P < 0,05). (3) O valor de Kappa foi 0,872, obtido por dois médicos diferentes com igual experiência. CONCLUSÃO A combinação do GI-RADS e do sistema de pontuação da 3D-CEUS é um método mais eficaz para distinguir massas ovarianas benignas de malignas.
