RESUMO

Social cooperation is fundamentally important for group animals but rarely studied in mice because of their natural aggressiveness. Here, we present a new water-reward assay to investigate mutualistic cooperative behavior in mice. We describe the construction of the apparatus and provide details of the procedures and analysis for investigators to characterize and quantify the mutualistic cooperative behavior. This protocol has been validated in mice and can be used for investigating mechanisms of cooperation. For complete details on the use and execution of this protocol, please refer to Zhang et al. and Wang et al.1,2.

RESUMO

Owing to their excellent elasticities and adaptability as sensing materials, ionic hydrogels exhibit significant promise in the field of intelligent wearable devices. Nonetheless, molecular chains within the polymer network of hydrogels are susceptible to damage, leading to crack extension. Hence, we drew inspiration from the composite structure of the human dermis to engineer a composite hydrogel, incorporating dopamine-modified elastic fibers as a reinforcement. This approach mitigates crack expansion and augments sensor sensitivity by fostering intermolecular forces between the dopamine on the fibers, the hydrogel backbone, and water molecules. The design of this composite hydrogel elevates its breaking tensile capacity from 35 KJ to 203 KJ, significantly enhancing the fatigue resistance of the hydrogel. Remarkably, its electrical properties endure stability even after 2000 cycles of testing, and it manifests heightened sensitivity compared to conventional hydrogel configurations. This investigation unveils a novel method for crafting composite-structured hydrogels.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT: 99m Tc-DTPA dynamic renal scintigraphy for evaluating glomerular filtration rate was performed in a 29-year-old woman with hyperuricemia and Graves disease. Subsequently, 99m Tc-DTPA orbital scintigraphy was conducted to determine the activity of Graves ophthalmopathy. Thyroid accumulation of 99m Tc-DTPA was incidentally identified. This should be cautiously distinguished from 99m Tc-pertechnetate uptake, considering that the salivary glands, oral cavity, and stomach were not visualized. Our case demonstrates that augmentation of blood supply, enhancement of capillary permeability, and accumulation of inflammatory exudate may be involved in the pathological process of Graves disease.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the clinical outcomes of morphology-guided surgical treatment for adult laryngeal and hypopharyngeal hemangioma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients diagnosed with adult laryngeal and hypopharyngeal hemangioma by outpatient laryngoscopy and received surgical treatments were retrospectively included. Size and morphology were classified to guide the choose of surgical procedures including CO2 laser excision, CO2 coagulation + bleomycin injection and potassium-titanyl-phosphate (KTP) laser + bleomycin injection. The baseline information and pre-, postoperative laryngoscopies were collected, the outcomes were followed up and analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 68 patients were included, 7 cases with exophytic and non-bulky hemangioma received CO2 laser excision, 20 cases received CO2 laser coagulation + bleomycin injection and 25 cases with KTP + bleomycin injection, another 16 cases with pure bleomycin injection were included as comparison. There was no difference of baseline analysis among the groups (P > = 0.05). Positive outcomes were achieved in most cases of CO2 excision (100%), CO2 coagulation + bleomycin (90.0%) and KTP + bleomycin (84.0%) groups, which were better than pure bleomycin (56.3%, p = 0.001). CO2 or KTP, associated to Bleomycin, gave same results on same lesions (P = 0.132). CONCLUSIONS AND SIGNIFICANCE: Morphology of hemangioma may help in the selection of surgical procedures. CO2 coagulation can be used as a potential substitute for KTP in the treatment of adult laryngeal and hypopharyngeal hemangioma.

RESUMO

Intelligent video surveillance based on artificial intelligence, image processing, and other advanced technologies is a hot topic of research in the upcoming era of Industry 5.0. Currently, low recognition accuracy and low location precision of devices in intelligent monitoring remain a problem in production lines. This paper proposes a production line device recognition and localization method based on an improved YOLOv5s model. The proposed method can achieve real-time detection and localization of production line equipment such as robotic arms and AGV carts by introducing CA attention module in YOLOv5s network model architecture, GSConv lightweight convolution method and Slim-Neck method in Neck layer, add Decoupled Head structure to the Detect layer. The experimental results show that the improved method achieves 93.6% Precision, 85.6% recall, and 91.8% mAP@0.5, and the Pascal VOC2007 public dataset test shows that the improved method effectively improves the recognition accuracy. The research results can substantially improve the intelligence level of production lines and provide an important reference for manufacturing industries to realize intelligent and digital transformation.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Previously, we demonstrated that the combined mode of carboplatin (CBDCA) and photodynamic therapy (PDT) based on 9-hydroxypheophorbide (9-HPbD) enhanced cytotoxicity and apoptosis on AMC-HN-3 laryngeal cancer cells. The present study aimed to investigate anti-tumor effect of the combined therapy in vivo and the potential role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in these enhanced apoptotic pathways initiated by the combined therapy in AMC-HN-3 cells. METHODS: Mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) and intracellular Ca2+were detected under confocal microscopy. Various apoptotic pathways were detected by western blots. In vivo study with the combined regimen was also performed on AMC-HN-3 cells-xenograft nude mice. RESULTS: In vitro study showed that the combined treatment could decrease the level of MMP, increase intracellular Ca2+ and AIF translocation, and activate the expression of caspase-12. Mechanismly, the augmented apoptotic effect was mediated by ROS. The synergistic antitumor effect was also observed in vivo. CONCLUSIONS: The mechanism of CBDCA and 9-HPbD-PDT combination involves ROS-mediated mitochondrial and endoplasmic reticulum apoptosis pathways. This combination may be a promising treatment strategy for laryngeal cancer.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Pre-Descemet corneal dystrophy (PDCD) is characterized by the presence of numerous, tiny, polymorphic opacities immediately anterior to Descemet membrane, which is a rare form of corneal stromal dystrophy and hard to be diagnosed. In vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM) is a useful tool to examine the minimal lesions of the cornea at the cellular level. In this article, we report a rare case of PDCD associated with X-linked ichthyosis and evaluate IVCM findings. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a 34-year-old male Chinese patient with PDCD associated with X-linked ichthyosis. Slit-lamp biomicroscopy showed the presence of tiny and pleomorphic opacities in the posterior stroma immediately anterior to Descemet membrane bilaterally. IVCM revealed regular distributed hyperreflective particles inside the enlarged and activated keratocytes in the posterior stroma. Hyperreflective particles were also observed dispersedly outside the keratocytes in the anterior stroma. Dermatological examination revealed that the skin over the patient's entire body was dry and coarse, with thickening and scaling of the skin in the extensor side of the extremities. PCR results demonstrated that all ten exons and part flanking sequences of STS gene failed to produce any amplicons in the patient. CONCLUSIONS: IVCM is useful for analyzing the living corneal structural changes in rare corneal dystrophies. We first reported the IVCM characteristics of PDCD associated with X-linked ichthyosis, which was caused by a deletion of the steroid sulfatase (STS) gene, confirmed by gene analysis.
