RESUMO

Currently, platinum (Pt)/carbon support composite materials have tremendous application prospects in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, one of the primary challenges for boosting their performance is designing a substrate with the desired microstructure. Herein, the intact hollow carbon spheres (HCSs) were prepared via template method. Based on the morphology variation of the as-prepared HCSs-x, we conjectured that the polydopamine (PDA) core was generated first and then slowly grew into a complete overburden (SiO2@PDA). Afterward, Pt atomic clusters were anchored on the outer shells of HCSs-4 to construct composite electrocatalysts (Pty/HCSs-4) by a chemical reduction method. Due to the low charge-transfer resistance, the HCSs have a large electrochemical surface area and provide a continuous electron transport pathway, boosting the atom utilization efficiency during hydrogen production and release. The synthesized Pt2.5/HCSs-4 electrocatalysts exhibit excellent HER activity in acidic media, which can be ascribed to the compositional modulation and delicate structural design. Specifically, when the overpotential is 10 A g-1, the overpotential can achieve 92 mV. This work opens a new route to fabricate Pt-based electrocatalysts and brings a new understanding of the formation mechanism of HCSs.

Achieving an optimal balance between strength and ductility in advanced engineering materials has long been a challenge for researchers. In the field of material strengthening, most approaches that prevent or impede the motion of dislocations involve ductility reduction. In the present study, we propose a strengthening approach based on spinodal decomposition in which Cu and Al are introduced into a ferrous medium-entropy alloy. The matrix undergoes nanoscale periodic spinodal decomposition via a simple one-step aging procedure. Chemical fluctuations within periodic spinodal decomposed structures induce spinodal hardening, leading to a doubled strengthening effect that surpasses the conventional precipitation strengthening mechanism. Notably, the periodic spinodal decomposed structures effectively overcome strain localization issues, preserving elongation and doubling their mechanical strength. Spinodal decomposition offers high versatility because it can be implemented with minimal elemental addition, making it a promising candidate for enhancing the mechanical properties of various alloy systems.

Piperidines are widely present in small molecule drugs and natural products. Despite many methods have been developed for their synthesis, new approaches to polysubstituted piperidines are highly desirable. This work presents a radical (4+2) cycloaddition reaction for synthesis of piperidines featuring dense substituents at 3,4,5-positions that are not readily accessible by known methods. Using commercially available diboron(4) compounds and 4-phenylpyridine as the catalyst precursors, the boronyl radical-catalyzed cycloaddition between 3-aroyl azetidines and various alkenes, including previously unreactive 1,2-di-, tri-, and tetrasubstituted alkenes, has delivered the polysubstituted piperidines in generally high yield and diastereoselectivity. The reaction also features high modularity, atom economy, broad substrate scope, metal-free conditions, simple catalysts and operation. The utilization of the products has been demonstrated by selective transformations. A plausible mechanism, with the ring-opening of azetidine as the rate-limiting step, has been proposed based on the experimental and computational results.

Carbonized polydopamine (cPDA) exhibits a nitrogenous graphite-like structure with n-type semiconductor property. However, the low electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient of cPDA cannot meet the needs of flexible thermoelectric devices. In this study, a series of metal ions were coordinated with cPDA to enhance n-type thermoelectric properties. At 300 K, all metal-coordination cPDA (metal-cPDA) samples obtain lower thermal conductivity compared to cPDA. Mn-cPDA exhibits the greatest Seebeck coefficient of -25.94 µV K-1, which is almost six times higher than cPDA. Fe-cPDA shows the best electrical conductivity of 2.45 × 105 S m-1. An optimal power factor (PF) value of 11.93 µW m-1 K-2 is achieved in Ca-cPDA with the enhanced electrical conductivity of 9.5 × 104 S m-1 and Seebeck coefficient of -11.24 µV K-1. Using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), we revealed the structural characterization of metal-cPDA. Our results indictate that the different metal ions (Mn2+, Zn2+, Mg2+, Al3+, Ca2+, and Fe3+) exert varying influences on the growth of graphite-like structure within metal-cPDA, which lead to the evolution of electrical conductivity. We observe that the carrier density and carrier mobility depend on both the degree of graphitization and the metal-ion coordination, which work together on electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient. These findings and understanding of the thermoelectric properties of PDA-based materials will help to realize high-performance n-type thermoelectric materials for flexible electronic device applications.

An unprecedented VCP-CP (vinylcyclopropane-cyclopentene) rearrangement approach has been established herein by virtue of the pyridine-boronyl radical catalyzed intramolecular ring expansions. This metal-free radical pathway harnesses readily available catalysts and unactivated vinylcyclopropane starting materials, providing an array of cyclopentene derivatives chemoselectively under relatively mild conditions. Mechanistic studies support the idea that the boronyl radical engages in the generation of allylic/ketyl radical species, thus inducing the ring opening of cyclopropanes and the following intramolecular cyclization processes.

BACKGROUND: Selenium is essential for livestock and human health. The traditional way of adding selenium to livestock diets has limitations, and there is a growing trend to provide livestock with a safe and efficient source of selenium through selenium-enriched pasture. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate the effects of selenium enrichment on fermentation characteristics, selenium content, selenium morphology, microbial community and in vitro digestion of silage alfalfa by using unenriched (CK) and selenium-enriched (Se) alfalfa as raw material for silage. RESULTS: In this study, selenium enrichment significantly increased crude protein, soluble carbohydrate, total selenium, and organic selenium contents of alfalfa silage fresh and post-silage samples, and it significantly decreased neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent fiber contents (p < 0.05). Selenium enrichment altered the form of selenium in plants, mainly in the form of SeMet and SeMeCys, which were significantly higher than that of CK (p < 0.05). Selenium enrichment could significantly increase the lactic acid content, reduce the pH value, change the diversity of bacterial community, promote the growth of beneficial bacteria such as Lactiplantibacillus and inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria such as Pantoea, so as to improve the fermentation quality of silage. The in vitro digestibility of dry matter (IVDMD), in vitro digestibility of acid detergent fibers (IVADFD) and in vitro digestibility of acid detergent fibers (IVNDFD) of silage after selenium enrichment were significantly higher than those of CK (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: This study showed that the presence of selenium could regulate the structure of the alfalfa silage bacterial community and improve alfalfa silage fermentation quality. Selenium enrichment measures can change the morphology of selenium in alfalfa silage products, thus promoting the conversion of organic selenium.

Understanding farmers' future residential preferences and the factors affecting these choices is crucial for tackling the issues related to hollow village management and rural planning. Despite limited research on the role of the family life cycle, this study explores how the family life cycle, characteristics of the household head, livelihood strategies, and resource availability shape farmers' future residential preferences. Data were collected from 777 households in China's main grain-producing area. The findings reveal that 52.90% of households prefer to stay in their current rural residences. Other favored options are elderly care facilities (13.90%), living with children in the village (12.36%), and ancestral homes (11.68%). The family life cycle significantly affects these preferences (p < 0.01), with changes in family structure and age leading to different living choices. Specifically, households in the initial (71.29%), burden (70.32%), and stable stages (40.14%) prefer their current rural residences, while those in the maintenance and empty-nest stages opt for living with their children's residences (22.22% and 16.96%, respectively) or in elderly care facilities (30.00% and 33.93%). Meanwhile, age, health, income, livelihood strategies, and land ownership also markedly influence the choice of residence. Recommendations include educational programs for elderly rural residents, improving older individuals' adaptability to rural changes, creating more rural employment opportunities, and enhancing medical and infrastructural services for the sustainable rural development.

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (L. plantarum) and propionic acid (PA) on fermentation characteristics and microbial community of amaranth (Amaranthus hypochondriaus) silage with different moisture contents. Methods: Amaranth was harvested at maturity stage and prepared for ensiling. There were two moisture content gradients (80%: AhG, 70%: AhS; fresh material: FM) and three treatments (control: CK, L. plantarum: LP, propionic acid: PA) set up, and silages were opened after 60 d of ensiling. Results: The results showed that the addition of L. plantarum and PA increased lactic acid (LA) content and decreased pH of amaranth after fermentation. In particular, the addition of PA significantly increased crude protein content (p < 0.05). LA content was higher in wilted silage than in high-moisture silage, and it was higher with the addition of L. plantarum and PA (p < 0.05). The dominant species of AhGLP, AhSCK, AhSLP and AhSPA were mainly L. plantarum, Lentilactobacillus buchneri and Levilactobacillus brevis. The dominant species in AhGCK include Enterobacter cloacae, and Xanthomonas oryzae was dominated in AhGPA, which affected fermentation quality. L. plantarum and PA acted synergistically after ensiling to accelerate the succession of dominant species from gram-negative to gram-positive bacteria, forming a symbiotic microbial network centred on lactic acid bacteria. Both wilting and additive silage preparation methods increased the degree of dominance of global and overview maps and carbohydrate metabolism, and decreased the degree of dominance of amino acid metabolism categories. Conclusion: In conclusion, the addition of L. plantarum to silage can effectively improve the fermentation characteristics of amaranth, increase the diversity of bacterial communities, and regulate the microbial community and its functional metabolic pathways to achieve the desired fermentation effect.

The earlobe is a featherless, exposed thickening located beneath the ear canal of chickens, which plays a visual signaling role in age, performance, mental vitality, reproduction, and other aspects. However, despite its importance, there have been few studies on the color differences and formation mechanisms of chicken earlobes, particularly the structurally blue earlobes characteristic of the Jiangshan black-bone chicken. In this study, we explored the physiological mechanisms that may influence the formation of differently colored earlobes using 3 types of earlobes from Jiangshan black-bone chickens: light peacock green (Green group), dark peacock green (Blue group), and dark reddish purple (Black group). All 3 earlobe colors exhibited positive melanin Masson-Fontana staining, and the thickness of collagen fibers in the dermis decreased in the order of Green, Blue, and Black groups. A total of 1,953 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were detected in the 3 earlobes through mRNA sequencing, among which the GO term "collagen trimer" was significantly enriched in DEGs between groups. Additionally, 716 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) were identified in the 3 earlobes using 4D-DIA proteomics, with the term "collagen fibril organization" being significantly enriched in DEPs between the Green and Black groups. Integrated analysis of transcriptome and proteome data revealed that 12 DEGs and DEPs were commonly differentially expressed between the Green and Black groups, including the gene LUM (corneal keratan sulfate proteoglycan), which was significantly enriched in the "collagen fibril organization" GO term. In conclusion, our study suggests that LUM plays a crucial role in the formation of peacock green earlobes in Jiangshan black-bone chickens. The high level of LUM in peacock green (Green and Blue groups) may affect collagen nanostructures, leading to a stronger effect of melanin-supported dermal collagen on the production of non-iridescent structural colors through coherent scattering, resulting in a bright structural blue color in Jiangshan black-bone chickens. In contrast, the low expression of LUM in dark reddish purple (Black group) reduces the reflection of non-iridescent structural colors, making the earlobe color appear almost black, similar to melanin.

We investigate the effect of ultrasound on the evaporation and crystallization of sessile NaCl solution droplets which were positioned in traveling or standing wave ultrasound field. The experimental results indicated that the ultrasound field can significantly accelerate the evaporation rate of the sessile droplets and refine the crystal grains. By adjusting the distance between the sessile droplets and the ultrasound emitter, it is found that, in traveling wave ultrasound field, the sessile droplet evaporation time and the time for the appearance of NaCl grains exhibited a fluctuating increase as the droplet-emitter distance increased. While in the standing wave ultrasound, the sessile droplet evaporation rate increases with the increasing droplet-emitter distance. Overall, the traveling wave ultrasound field has a stronger effect on grain refinement of the sessile droplets than the standing wave ultrasound field. The grain refinement is attributed to the decrease of critical nucleation radius caused by ultrasound energy and the increase of the nucleation rate caused by the accelerated evaporation rate. In addition, the breakage of grains caused by ultrasonic cavitation would also lead to grain refinement.

PURPOSE: This study aims to examine the relationship between excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) and attention impairment in Chinese individuals with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). METHODS: A total of 1996 OSA patients with an apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) of ≥ 5 events per hour were included in this study. EDS was measured using the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), while cognitive function was assessed using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). RESULTS: OSA patients with EDS demonstrated higher body mass index (BMI), comorbidities of hypertension and diabetes, decreased N3 sleep, increased AHI and ODI, as well as lower minimum oxygen saturation. Despite no significant differences in total cognitive scores assessed by MMSE and MoCA, individuals with comorbid sleepiness exhibited more evident attention deficits in the subdomains of MoCA. Stratified analysis indicated that regardless of age, educational level was the primary factor influencing attention in the AHI < =20 group. In the AHI > 20 group, attention impairment in patients younger than 40 remained significantly associated with education level, whereas for individuals aged 40 and above, attention deficits were associated with education level, age, and daytime sleepiness. The interaction analysis indicated that OSA severity modulated the impact of sleepiness on attention in patients aged 40 and above. CONCLUSION: A significant correlation was observed between EDS and attention deficits in Chinese individuals diagnosed with OSA, with a particular emphasis on patients aged 40 and above. The severity of OSA modulates the impact of sleepiness on attention in patients aged 40 and above.

The chicken comb is an essential secondary sexual characteristic to measure sexual maturity and is closely related to reproductive performance. Pendulous comb (PC) and upright comb (UC) are 2 common comb phenotypes in hens, which have been highly associated with egg production performance. However, the reasons for the formation of PC remain undetermined. In this study, we first characterized the PC and UC chicken at start (at 175 d age), peak (at 217 d age), and postlaying (at 300 d age) and found that PC and UC could transform for each other. Furthermore, we suggested that PC chicken demonstrated better egg production performance than UC chicken, especially characterizing comb type in the start-laying period. Moreover, we performed histological evaluation of PC and UC tissue, which suggested that the low density of collagen fibers and acid mucopolysaccharides might lead to the formation of PC. To further explore the possible reasons for PC formation, we performed an untargeted metabolomic analysis of serum between PC and UC chicken in the start, peak, and postlaying periods. The enrichment analysis of period-unique differentially expressed metabolites (DEMs) between PC and UC showed that the different metabolic pathways and nutritional levels might contribute to the formation of PC in the different laying periods. Our research provided critical insights into the phenotypic diversity of chicken comb, establishing a foundation for early selection of chicken egg production performance.

Dispersion of single atoms (SAs) in the host is important for optimizing catalytic activity. Herein, we propose a novel strategy to tune oxygen vacancies in CeO2-X directionally anchoring the single atom platinum (PtSA), which is uniformly dispersed on the rGO. The catalyst's performance for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) can be enhanced by controlling different densities of CeO2-X in rGO. The PtSA performs best optimally densified and loaded on homogeneous and moderately densified CeO2-X/rGO (PtSA-M-CeO2-X/rGO). It exhibited high activity in HER with an overpotential of 25 mV at 0.5 M H2SO4 and 33 mV at 1 KOH than that of almost reported electrocatalysts. Furthermore, it exhibited stability for 90 hours at -100 mA cm-2 in 1 KOH and -150 mA cm-2 in 0.5 M H2SO4 conditions, respectively. Through comprehensive experiments and theoretical calculations, the suitable dispersion density of PtSA on the defects of CeO2-X with more active sites gives the potential for practical applications. This research paves the way for developing single-atom catalysts with exceptional catalytic activity and stability, holding promise in advanced green energy conversion through defects engineering.

Meat production performance is the most important economic trait in broilers, and skeletal muscle, as the largest organ in animals, is directly related to meat production during embryonic and postnatal growth and development. N6-Methyladenosine (m6A) is a chemical modification occurs on RNA adenosine that has been reported to participate in a variety of biological processes in all species. However, there are still few reports on the regulatory role of muscle growth and development in poultry after birth. This study aims to reveal the distribution of m6A modification sites in chicken pectoralis major muscle after birth and find out the regulatory relationship between m6A and muscle development. As representatives of leaner (Xinghua chicken [XH]) and hypertrophic (White Recessive Rock chicken [WRR]) broilers, there are significant differences in body weight, muscle fiber diameter, and muscle fiber cross-sectional area between XH and WRR chickens. RNA sequencing detected a total of 397 differentially expressed genes (DEG) in the pectoralis major muscle of XH and WRR chicken, and these DEGs were mainly enriched in catalytic activity and metabolic pathways. MeRIP sequencing results showed that among all 6,476 differentially modified m6A peaks, about 90% peaks (5,823) were differentially down regulated in XH chickens. The joint analysis of the mRNA and MeRIP sequencing data found 145 DEGs with differential m6A peak, ALKBH5 as a m6A demethylase, was also included. The highly expression of ALKBH5 in the muscle tissue of poultry and differential expression between XH and WRR chickens suggest that ALKBH5 may play a crucial role in regulating muscle development. Our results revealed that there were significant differences in growth rate, body weight, muscle fiber diameter, and fiber cross-section area between WRR and XH chicken, as well as significant differences in m6A methylation level and muscle metabolism level.

Bariatric surgeries are becoming more prevalent as obesity rates continue to rise. Being that it is an effective weight-loss procedure, it can induce significant anatomical, physiological, and metabolic alterations, which affect the pharmacokinetics of various medications. Cytochrome (CYP) P450 is a group of enzymes that are primarily responsible for metabolizing most medications. Bariatric surgery may affect CYP activity and consequently alter metabolism of various medications, and the resulting weight loss may influence the metabolism of various drugs. This study investigates the impact of bariatric surgery on which CYP enzymes are affected and their effects medications. Authors of this study did an extensive literature review and research in databases including PubMed and EMBASE. The evidence was gathered for medication efficacy influenced by enzyme fluctuations to advocate for further studies for patients that undergo bariatric surgery. The search was limited to English-language results and is deemed up to date as of September 2023. There are numerous studies that indicated alterations of the CYP enzyme activity, which affects the pharmacokinetics of medications used to treat acute and chronic conditions after bariatric surgery. There are various mechanisms involved in CYP enzyme activity leading to fluctuations and the clearance of medications and subsequently compromising the efficacy and safety of these agents. It is imperative to conduct more prospective randomized control studies with longer duration to guide clinicians on how to manage medications with various CYP activity for patients' post-bariatric surgery.

The jet generated through PTFE based inert material liner has the characteristics of low energy, low density, and large aspect ratio, which can effectively achieve the "penetration without explosion" of explosive reactive armor. PTFE/Cu composite material liner with various densities is prepared, to research the roles of preparation procedure and density in the destroy effect of jet on reactive armor. Through numerical simulation research, it was found that there was no reaction at all in the explosive layer penetrated by the jet generated by the sinter liner molded, while the explosive layer penetrated by the jet generated through the hot-pressing sintering and extrusion molding liner experienced local reactions on the jet impact channel, and the overall explosive layer did not undergo any reaction. Through experimental verification, it has been proven that all three types of jets have achieved "penetration without explosion" on explosive reactive armor.

The B-box (BBX) gene family includes zinc finger protein transcription factors that regulate a multitude of physiological and developmental processes in plants. While BBX gene families have been previously determined in various plants, the members and roles of peanut BBXs are largely unknown. In this research, on the basis of the genome-wide identification of BBXs in three peanut species (Arachis hypogaea, A. duranensis, and A. ipaensis), we investigated the expression profile of the BBXs in various tissues and in response to salt and drought stresses and selected AhBBX6 for functional characterization. We identified a total of 77 BBXs in peanuts, which could be grouped into five subfamilies, with the genes from the same branch of the same subgroup having comparable exon-intron structures. In addition, a significant number of cis-regulatory elements involved in the regulation of responses to light and hormones and abiotic stresses were found in the promoter region of peanut BBXs. Based on the analysis of transcriptome data and qRT-PCR, we identified AhBBX6, AhBBX11, AhBBX13, and AhBBX38 as potential genes associated with tolerance to salt and drought. Silencing AhBBX6 using virus-induced gene silencing compromised the tolerance of peanut plants to salt and drought stresses. The results of this study provide knowledge on peanut BBXs and establish a foundation for future research into their functional roles in peanut development and stress response.

Duck egg production, like that of laying hens, follows a typical low-peak-low cycle, reflecting the dynamics of the reproductive system. Post-peak, some ducks undergo a cessation of egg laying, indicative of a regression process in the oviduct. Notably, the magnum, being the longest segment of the oviduct, plays a crucial role in protein secretion. Despite its significance, few studies have investigated the molecular mechanisms underlying oviduct regression in ducks that have ceased laying eggs. In this study, we conducted single-cell transcriptome sequencing on the magnum tissue of Shaoxing ducks at 467 days of age, utilizing the 10× Genomics platform. This approach allowed us to generate a detailed magnum transcriptome map of both egg-laying and ceased-laying ducks. We collected transcriptome data from 13,708 individual cells, which were then subjected to computational analysis, resulting in the identification of 27 distinct cell clusters. Marker genes were subsequently employed to categorize these clusters into specific cell types. Our analysis revealed notable heterogeneity in magnum cells between the egg-laying and ceased-laying ducks, primarily characterized by variations in cells involved in protein secretion and extracellular matrix (ECM)-producing fibroblasts. Specifically, cells engaged in protein secretion were predominantly observed in the egg-laying ducks, indicative of their role in functional albumen deposition within the magnum, a phenomenon not observed in the ceased-laying ducks. Moreover, the proportion of THY1+ cells within the ECM-producing fibroblasts was found to be significantly higher in the egg-laying ducks (59%) compared to the ceased-laying ducks (24%). Similarly, TIMP4+ fibroblasts constituted a greater proportion of the ECM-producing fibroblasts in the egg-laying ducks (83%) compared to the ceased-laying ducks (58%). These findings suggest a potential correlation between the expression of THY1 and TIMP4 in ECM-producing fibroblasts and oviduct activity during functional reproduction. Our study provides valuable single-cell insights that warrant further investigation into the biological implications of fibroblast subsets in the degeneration of the reproductive tract. Moreover, these insights hold promise for enhancing the production efficiency of laying ducks.

This work proposes a highly sensitive sandwich heterostructure multimode optical fiber microbend sensor for heart rate (HR), respiratory rate (RR), and ballistocardiography (BCG) monitoring, which is fabricated by combining a sandwich heterostructure multimode fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer (SHMF-MZI) with a microbend deformer. The parameters of the SHMF-MZI sensor and the microbend deformer were analyzed and optimized in detail, and then the new encapsulated method of the wearable device was put forward. The proposed wearable sensor could greatly enhance the response to the HR signal. The performances for HR, RR, and BCG monitoring were as good as those of the medically approved commercial monitors. The sensor has the advantages of high sensitivity, easy fabrication, and good stability, providing the potential for application in the field of daily supervision and health monitoring.
