INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic required rapid dissemination of accurate information across the world to both healthcare workers and the general public. Social media represents an opportunity to undertake this. The aim of this study was to analyse a healthcare worker education campaign in Africa delivered through the social media platform Facebook and discuss the feasibility of this approach for future healthcare workers and public health campaigns. METHODS: The campaign ran from June 2020 to January 2021. The Facebook Ad Manager suite was used to extract data in July 2021. Videos were analysed for total and individual video reach, impressions, 3-second video plays, 50% plays and 100% plays. The geographic use of the videos and age and gender breakdown was also analysed. RESULTS: Total reach of the Facebook campaign was 6,356,846 and total impressions was 12,767,118. The video with the highest reach was 'Hand washing steps for health workers' with a reach of 1,479,603. The total campaign 3-second plays were 2,189,460 decreasing to 77,120 for 100% play duration. DISCUSSION: Facebook advertising campaigns may have the ability to reach large populations and achieve a range of engagement outcomes that would be more cost effective and have greater reach when compared with traditional media. The outcome of this campaign has shown the potential of social media's use in public health information, medical education and professional development.

Short- term experiences in global health (STEGH), also known as short-term medical missions continue to be a popular mode of engagement in global health activities for students, healthcare providers, and religious groups, driven primarily by organizations from high-income countries. While STEGH have the potential to be beneficial, a large proportion of these do not sustainably benefit the communities they intend to serve, may undermine local health systems, operate without appropriate licenses, go beyond their intended purposes, and may cause harm to patients. With heightened calls to "decolonize" global health, and to achieve ethical, sustainable, and practical engagements, there is a need to establish strong guiding principles for global health engagements. The Advocacy for Global Health Partnerships (AGHP), a multi-sectoral coalition, was established to reflect on and address the concerns relating to STEGH. Towards this end, AGHP created the Brocher Declaration to lay out six main principles that should guide ethical and appropriate STEGH practices. A variety of organizations have accepted the Declaration and are using it to provide guidance for effective implementation of appropriate global health efforts. The Declaration joins broader efforts to promote equity in global health and a critical reevaluation of volunteer-centric, charity-based missions. The current state of the world's health demands a new model of collaboration - one that sparks deep discussions of shared innovation and builds ethical partnerships to address pressing issues in global health.

BACKGROUND: Institutional Health Partnerships are long-term, institution to institution partnerships between high income and low and middle income countries which seek to build capacity and strengthen health institutions in order to improve health service delivery and outcomes. Funding for Institutional Health Partnerships has increased in recent years. This paper outlines a rapid evidence review on the effectiveness of this modality. METHODS: A rapid evidence review of published and grey literature was conducted. Content relating to the effectiveness of working in partnership and methods and frameworks used were extracted and analysed. The results of this analysis were used to structure a discussion regarding the next steps to strengthen the evidence base for the effectiveness of institutional health partnerships. RESULTS: The evidence review, including citation mapping, returned 27 published papers and 17 grey literature documents that met all of the inclusion criteria. Most of the literature did not meet the high standards of formal academic rigour and there was no original research amongst this literature that specifically addressed the effectiveness of institutional health partnerships. This was not surprising given institutional health partnerships do not lend themselves easily to case control studies and randomised control trials due to their high level of diversity and operation in complex social systems. There was, however, a body of practice based knowledge and experience. CONCLUSIONS: Evidence for the effectiveness of Institutional Health Partnerships is thin both in terms of quantity and academic rigour. There is a need to better define and differentiate Institutional Health Partnerships in order to measure and compare effectiveness across such a diverse group. Effectiveness needs to be measured at the level of individual partnerships, the bodies that facilitate partnership programmes and the level of health service delivery. There is a need to develop indicators and frameworks that specifically address the benefits and values of partnership working and how these relate to effectiveness. These indicators need to be content neutral of specific interventions which are already measured through routine project monitoring and evaluation. This will allow the development of methodological pathways to assess the effectiveness of institutional health partnerships. Until more primary research is conducted or published there is little benefit in further systematic reviews.
