RESUMO

Since the introduction of sulfonamides in the late 1930s, coalescent mastoiditis is an uncommon complication of otitis media. Swelling, erythema, and tenderness over the mastoid area with associated anterior displacement of the auricle are classic signs and symptoms of coalescent mastoiditis with formation of a subperiosteal abscess. Early recognition of this entity is essential to prevent its complications. Prompt otolaryngologic consultation is indicated and inpatient antibiotic therapy should be begun. Surgical treatment is also needed and may obviate further complications.

RESUMO

A patient with subphrenic abscess can present with pulmonary or abdominal symptoms because of the location of the abscess adjacent to the diaphragm. This thoracoabdominal clinical complex has been described previously and, if chest symptoms predominate, may obscure the diagnosis of subphrenic abscess. The case of a patient with occult abdominal pathology who presented with respiratory complaints is discussed.

RESUMO

Each of eight new beta-lactam antibiotics was highly active in vitro against Neisseria meningitidis, and activity was not reduced by combining some of these drugs with penicillin, ampicillin, or tobramycin. Antibacterial activity and lack of antagonism between moxalactam and ampicillin was confirmed in a model of lethal meningococcal infection in mice.
