RESUMO

Education also becomes one of the basic needs of all human being in the today's world. Due to the rapid advancement of the information and communication technology during the past years emphasize the necessity of using e-learning in the education sector. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, all the countries developed and developing had to quickly move from conventional learning methods to e-learning. As a developing country Sri Lankan education sector also adopt the e-learning as a solution for continuing education process. The prime objective of this study is to examine the impact of e-learning on university undergraduates' academic success in the context of management faculties in non-state universities in Sri Lanka. A deductive quantitative research approach utilized for the data collection and analysis. The study population is 2500 undergraduates who are studying in the year 3 and 4 belongs to the management faculties of two non-state universities. Out of the total population 332 undergraduates were selected using convenience sampling technique. An online questionnaire survey conducted to collect data and simple linear regression models employed for data analysis. To ensure the overall reliability of the gathered data, Cronbach's alpha values checked. The findings revealed that e-learning has a significant positive impact on academic success along with a strong correlation of 0.872. According to the main study findings, there is a positive moderating effect on student satisfaction between e-learning and academic success while showing a strong correlation of 0.774. The major findings of this study give insights for higher educational institutions to create new initiatives to direct undergraduates towards the academic success with e-learning exposure.

RESUMO

An elderly man was stabbed with a needle and syringe onto his abdomen while asleep. He progressively developed respiratory failure and coma and died an hour later. Autopsy findings and laboratory analysis confirmed the death as being due to poisoning by cyanide. This case highlights the need to consider cyanide as a possible agent where there is a rapid death with progressive respiratory failure after injection of an unknown substance. Cyanide poisoning by ingestion is frequently seen in suicidal, accidental and homicidal deaths. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of cyanide poisoning by injection in Sri Lanka.

RESUMO

We conducted a retrospective review of obstetric patients admitted to the intensive care unit at Al-Ain hospital during period January 1(st) 1997 to December 31(st) 2002, in order to identify the indications for admission and the outcome. A total of 60 patients were admitted during the six years. The frequency of admission was 2.6 per 1000 deliveries and obstetric patients represented 2.4% of all ICU admissions. Admission was planned in 11 patients (18%) and unplanned in 49 (82%). The mean (+/-SD) duration of stay in ICU was 1.6+/-1.5 days. The leading indications for admission were haemorrhage (28.4%) and preeclampsia/eclampsia (25%). Of the 60 admissions, 47 (78.4%) followed surgery. The mean APACHE II score was 5.0+/-3.0. Twenty-two patients (37%) had blood transfusions, and only two (3.3%) required ventilation. Of the 60 patients only 28 (46.7%) were deemed to have severe illness necessitating intensive care; the remaining 32 patients were suitable for high dependency care. The mean APACHE II score and duration of stay were significantly higher in these patients. There were two deaths, representing 3.3% of obstetric intensive care unit admissions. Our findings highlight the need for establishing a high dependency unit to avoid unnecessary admission to the intensive care unit and to ensure proper management.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To determine fetal biophysical profile changes in women observing Ramadan with uncomplicated singleton pregnancy. METHODS: In this cross-sectional observational study healthy women who were observing Ramadan at 30 weeks or more of gestation were recruited as well as a non-fasting control group matched for age, parity, and gestational age. Ultrasound examination included assessment of amniotic fluid volume, fetal bladder volume, fetal biophysical profile, and umbilical artery Doppler flow. RESULTS: A total of 162 pregnant women were observed. Mean umbilical artery pulsatility index, vertical amniotic pool depth, and fetal bladder volume were similar in the study and control groups. However, there was a significant difference in biophysical scores between the two groups. In the fasting group, 30 of 81 fetuses (37%) had a score of 6/8 compared with 11 of 81 fetuses (13.6%) in the control group (P=0.001). All fetuses in both groups with a biophysical score of 6/8 showed no breathing movements. CONCLUSIONS: Fetal breathing movements are reduced during maternal fasting.

RESUMO

Three hundred and twenty-four patients presenting to Wellington Women's Hospital with symptoms suspicious of an ectopic pregnancy were first studied by testing serum for HCG using a new simple and sensitive (25 mIU/mL) ICON pregnancy test. One hundred and thirty ICON tests were positive. Subsequent management: (a) Immediate laparoscopy noted 3 intrauterine and 15 ectopic pregnancies. (b) Twenty-five patients discharged on revised clinical grounds without pregnancies. (c) An immediate ultrasound examination of 87 women showed 58 intrauterine pregnancies (including 1 misdiagnosed ectopic pregnancy) and 29 ectopic pregnancies which were later confirmed at laparoscopy. One hundred and ninety-four ICON tests were negative including two false negative results in patients with ectopic pregnancies. To avoid both unnecessary laparoscopy or the discharge of patients with a possible ectopic pregnancy, patients with symptoms and signs suspicious of an ectopic pregnancy and who present to hospital should have a rapid sensitive HCG assay. Then, if the test is positive (sensitivity 96%), an ultrasound examination can assist in determining the likely site of the pregnancy.

RESUMO

A small diameter laparoscope and 32% dextran solution was used to perform hysteroscopy on 158 patients with a variety of gynaecological problems. Greatest diagnostic value was in patients with irregular menstrual bleeding and lost IUCDS. The technique of hysteroscopy is easy to learn, safe, and complements the traditional dilatation and curettage as a diagnostic procedure.

RESUMO

Urine oestriol values from 327 pregnancies with antenatal complications were measured between 30 weeks gestation and term. Mean values were much lower than those obtained from pregnancies without complications. When infants were light for dates or developed evidence of neonatal morbidity, oestriol values were more likely to have been below the normal range than in pregnancies resulting in deliveries of normal infants. There was no evidence of severe fetal jeopardy in most pregnancies with oestriol values below normal. Perinatal death was consistently predicted when urine oestriol values lay below a line joining 35 mumol/day at 30 weeks and 65 mumol/day at term.
