RESUMO

Two separate reliability studies were conducted on an observational instrument derived from previous qualitative research and designed for collecting data on teaching behaviors demonstrated by attending physicians during attending rounds. The first study involved five observers coding 17 20-minute, videotaped segments of attending rounds. The second study involved two observers coding 27 two-hour attending round sessions as they occurred live on hospital wards. The reliability estimates from both studies were quite high, indicating that the instrument shows promise for use in both research and evaluation studies.

RESUMO

Interpreting qualitative data in the context of existing theories is a process frequently alluded to, but rarely discussed in detail. This article is a case study illustrating how existing theories and research findings were used to enrich a qualitative, preassessment study examining effective teaching by attending physicians. The investigators advocate an approach in which preliminary theoretical assumptions and orienting concepts are explicitly stated prior to conducting fieldwork. These assumptions and concepts are then modified during an initial pilot phase of study from which more focused theoretical perspectives and key orienting principles emerge. The remainder of the field experience is used for refinement of these perspectives and principles, which serve as the final results of the study.

RESUMO

This paper reports from an ethnographic study examining different instructional approaches among clinical instructors in a department of internal medicine. The focus of the paper is on different questioning styles adopted by the instructors during student case presentations and the impact of these questioning styles on medical students. A means of classifying questions is presented and suggestions for further research are offered.

RESUMO

This paper outlines a planning process for teachers to follow when designing an assessment of student attitudes. The guidelines presented are drawn from the literature on attitudinal measurement and from the authors' instructional experience. They are stated in terms which are general enough to encompass attitudinal measurement in a wide range of instructional settings.
