RESUMO

A case is reported of a young woman who, within a 2-year period, was diagnosed with an osteoblastoma at the apex of a maxillary molar and with a plexiform unicystic ameloblastoma in the posterior mandible. Previous cases of osteoblastoma occurring in the jaws are reviewed.

RESUMO

Fibrodysplasia ossificans circumscripta (FOC) is a lesion characterized by localized calcification of the investing fascia of skeletal muscle. It is often related to repeated trauma and was formerly known as traumatic myositis ossificans. Surgical procedures involving muscles are also believed to be a factor in the origin of the lesion. When FOC develops in the muscles of mastication it can lead to severe trismus. A case is reported of FOC in the left masseter muscle of a 44-year-old man who presented with marked limitation of opening. It was believed that previous fractures of the left maxilla and mandible and/or the subsequent surgical treatments were responsible for the onset of FOC. The radiographic and microscopic features of FOC are discussed in relation to recent theories on the etiology, pathogenesis, and treatment of the lesion.

RESUMO

A case of an oral heterotopic gastrointestinal cyst of the tongue is described and a review of the literature is presented. The oral gastrointestinal cyst is a developmental lesion found more commonly in males, with a wide age range, but mostly occurring in the young. It presents as an asymptomatic swelling and most likely arises from misplaced embryonal tissue. Conservative surgical excision is the treatment of choice and no recurrence is expected.

RESUMO

The pertinent clinical systemic and oral findings have been presented. Systemically, the patient presented with prenatal onset of growth retardation marked by an initial low birth weight, hemiatrophy, normal head size, frontal bossing, and triangular facies. Oral findings include an intact appearing primary dentition marked by microdontia, congenital absence of second premolars, blunted condyles, decreased anterior and posterior cranial base lengths, a mild hypoplastic mandible, and decreased facial height.

RESUMO

A case of aggressive ossifying fibroma has been presented, and emphasis has been placed on the importance of evaluating multiple parameters before a specific diagnosis is assigned. The unique histologic appearance of this particular lesion demonstrates a close relationship between the aggressive ossifying fibroma and a well-differentiated osteogenic sarcoma and advocates the need for more defined microscopic criteria to properly identify such lesions as either benign or malignant. It is suggested that proper surgical management of the aggressive forms of fibro-osseous lesions be dictated by the surgical judgement of the operator, in conjunction with what is best for the patient.

RESUMO

This report presents the clinical and histologic features and treatment of a classic nasolabial (nasoalveolar) cyst. Review of the literature confirms the fact that this lesion is a benign developmental cyst that may arise from epithelium of the nasolacrimal duct. The lesion is usually unilateral, but may be bilateral, is located beneath the ala of the nose, and occurs more frequently in females. Histologically, it is most frequently lined by a pseudostratified columnar epithelium, although both stratified squamous and cuboidal epithelium and goblet cells may be found. The cyst responds well to conservative enucleation.

RESUMO

Since its initial description, there have been approximately sixty cases of massive osteolysis reported, involving virtually every bone in the body. This case represents only the fifteenth report of this disease affecting maxillofacial bones. Clinically and radiographically, the progressive nature of this disease was observed over a 5-year period. Attempts at treatment were without success. From the light and electron-microscopic studies, it can be concluded that this disease process is nonneoplastic in nature, showing features of an exuberant proliferative response of vascular and supportive elements.

RESUMO

The histology of mouse secondary lymphoid tissue was examined following infection of Trichinella spiralis. ICR/CD-1 mice were orally infected with 200 T. spiralis and sacrificed at either 0, 3, 7, 14, 28 or 56 days after nematode administration. The animals were bled and sacrificed, and mesenteric lymph nodes were removed from each animal. They were fixed in 10% neutral buffered formalin, embedded in paraffin, and cut in 4-micron sections. Examination of serial sections demonstrated the sequential development of histological alteration in these regional lymph nodes. Hyperplasia was detected as early as 3 days after infection. Progressive changes occurring between 7 and 28 days after larval inoculation included hyperplasia with concurrent congestion of medullary sinuses, with increased numbers of neutrophils, histiocytes, lymphocytes, and eosinophils. Microscopic appearance of nodes removed from 56-day infected mice was similar to that noted for control tissues.

RESUMO

The occurrence of acinic cell tumors in the minor salivary glands of the oral cavity has, until recently, been considered exceptional. However, three recent papers have documented the details of fifty-two such cases. The purpose of the present article is to record the clinical information and histologic findings in six additional, previously unreported, examples of this tumor in the minor salivary glands.
