RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To determine fruit and vegetable (FV) costs at farmers' markets (FMs) and grocery stores, determine Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children participants' FV intake and psychosocial predictors, and compare FM users and nonusers. METHODS: Prices were collected biweekly from grocery stores and FM vendors. Participants were recruited from Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children clinic to complete a survey of FV intake, psychosocial variables, and FM usage. RESULTS: The FM cost was greater. A total of 377 participants (51%) used FMs. The FM users more often ate vegetables as snacks and > 1 vegetable per day (P < .05). CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS: Despite higher costs, FMs were often used. The FM users had a better vegetable intake pattern.

RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to determine if Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) variables predict soy milk intake in a sample of WIC participants in 2 Illinois counties (n = 380). A cross-sectional survey was used, which examined soy foods intake, behavioral beliefs, subjective norms, motivation, and intention. Soy product intake was low at both sites, and many participants (40%) did not know that soy milk was WIC approved. Most (> 70%) wanted to comply with their health care providers, but didn't know their opinions about soy milk (50-66%). Intention was significantly correlated with intake (0.507, P ≤ 0.01; 0.308, P ≤ 0.05). Environmental beliefs (0.282 and 0.410, P ≤ 0.01) and expectancy beliefs (0.490 and 0.636, P ≤ 0.01) were correlated with intention. At site 1, 30% of the variance in intention to consume soy milk was explained by expectancy beliefs and subjective norm beliefs (P < 0.0001); at site 2, 40% of the variance in intention was explained by expectancy beliefs. The TPB variables of expectancy beliefs predicted intention to consume soy milk in WIC participants. Therefore, knowing more about the health benefits of soy and how to cook with soy milk would increase WIC participants' intention to consume soy milk. Positive messages about soy milk from health care providers could influence intake.

RESUMO

Children with uncomplicated osteomyelitis and/or septic arthritis were more likely (P < .01) to have positive focus than blood cultures. Those who grew a pathogen and/or started on a single antibiotic were more likely to be discharged on a single antibiotic, and those sent home on oral therapy had fewer adverse events.

RESUMO

Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common and impairing psychiatric condition, affecting significant numbers of children and adolescents. General psychiatrists serve, both by choice and out of necessity, in the assessment and treatment of children and adolescents who have ADHD and in the education of patients and their families. For many clinicians, however, there are numerous unanswered questions regarding the diagnosis and therapeutic interventions for ADHD. This article provides general psychiatrists with a practical overview and update on the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of pediatric ADHD. Background information, recent relevant research, current evidence-based practice guidelines, and tips for clinical practice are reviewed in this article. The information is presented in a question-answer format.
