RESUMO

We propose an application for a bidimensional empirical mode decomposition and a Hilbert transform algorithm (BEMD-HT) in processing amplitude modulated fringe patterns. In numerical studies we investigate the influence of parameters of the algorithm and a fringe pattern under study on the demodulation results to optimize the procedure. A spiral phase method and the angle-oriented partial Hilbert transform are introduced to the BEMD-HT and tested. A postprocessing filtration method for BEMD-HT is proposed. Results of processing experimental data, such as vibration mode patterns obtained by time-average interferometry, correspond richly with numerical findings. They compare very well with the results of our previous investigations using the temporal phase-shifting (TPS) method and the continuous wavelet transform (CWT). Not needing to perform phase-shifting represents significant simplification of the experimental procedure in comparison with the TPS method.

RESUMO

Endocrinological Out-Patients Clinic at Children's Hospital in Dziekanów Lesny takes care of the children from Mazovia region. Hormonal findings in children with simple goiter were analyzed in several groups of patients. In all those patients preferential T3-secretion and decreased T4 production was found. These findings allow to conclude, that in Mazovia region there is iodine deficiency, which is probably the main cause of goiter development.

RESUMO

Thyroid function was investigated in a group of 61 newborns with congenital goiter before starting the therapy with thyroid hormones. The group included 19 girls and 42 boys, of which 27 were of age not exceeding one week (group I), 19 were between the first and the second week (group II), and 15 were between the second week and the third month of life (group III). The concentrations of the thyroid hormones were determined by radioimmunoassay. The values obtained have been compared with the local reference range obtained for the newborns of the Mazovia region. The values remaining outside the reference range were found in 47.5% of the newborns studied. The elevated values of TSH were observed mainly in group I newborns (12 from 27); among group II newborns there was only one with the elevated values, and none among the newborns of group III. thyroxine (T4) values were lowered in 14 among 27 newborns of group I, and in 2 among 19 newborns of group II; all T4 values were normal in group III. The percentage of the elevated values of triiodothyronine (T3) was higher in older newborns (group III). The elevated level of T3 accompanied by the lowered level of T4 with the normal or moderately elevated level of TSH is characteristic for the adaptation to the deficiency of iodine. There is preferential secretion of T3 aimed at maintaining euthyreosis. The elevated levels of T3 found in 30% of newborns with untreated goiter suggest an intrauterine deficit of iodine as a cause of the goiter appearance.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

RESUMO

Schizophrenic (n = 20), manic, (n = 16), and normal (n = 16) subjects were examined for their ability to shadow information dichotically and recall it. Text passages were varied in their level of organization and presented in the presence and absence of distraction. Schizophrenic patients were the only subjects affected by the presence of distraction, and this effect was specific to shadowing and not to recall. The severity of positive thought disorder was related to the three shadowing variables in the schizophrenic subjects but not in the manic sample. Closer examination revealed that performance under distraction was specifically related to thought disorder on one variable: the ability to monitor the level of organization in passages that they were shadowing. The implications of these results for research identifying causes and correlates of thought disorder are discussed.

RESUMO

This report presents an assessment of 20 manic and 20 schizophrenic patients using a clinical rating instrument: the Scale for Assessment of Thought, Language, and Communication (TLC). These 40 patients were assessed three times within a 10-day period at the outset of an acute psychotic episode with open-ended interviews which were then evaluated with the TLC. It was found that clinically rated speech disorders were relatively consistent within these patients at the outset of a psychotic episode. Furthermore, it was found that composite ratings of positive and negative speech disorders, as defined by the TLC, were stable discriminators of the manic and schizophrenic patients, while global thought disorder was not useful as a discriminator. The results provide evidence that thought disorder in psychosis may be a stable trait of patients during acute episodes and that positive and negative disorder is a useful construct.
