AbstractThe social environment is often the most dynamic and fitness-relevant environment animals experience. Here we tested whether plasticity arising from variation in social environments can promote signal-preference divergence-a key prediction of recent speciation theory but one that has proven difficult to test in natural systems. Interactions in mixed social aggregations could reduce, create, or enhance signal-preference differences. In the latter case, social plasticity could establish or increase assortative mating. We tested this by rearing two recently diverged species of Enchenopa treehoppers-sap-feeding insects that communicate with plant-borne vibrational signals-in treatments consisting of mixed-species versus own-species aggregations. Social experience with heterospecifics (in the mixed-species treatment) resulted in enhanced signal-preference species differences. For one of the two species, we tested but found no differences in the plastic response between sympatric and allopatric sites, suggesting the absence of reinforcement in the signals and preferences and their plastic response. Our results support the hypothesis that social plasticity can create or enhance signal-preference differences and that this might occur in the absence of long-term selection against hybridization on plastic responses themselves. Such social plasticity may facilitate rapid bursts of diversification.

Tumor lysis syndrome (TLS) is an oncologic emergency most frequently associated with initial treatment of hematologic malignancies and high-tumor burden solid tumors such as small-cell lung cancer (SCLC). Most often, TLS is associated with cytotoxic chemotherapy. In the treatment of SCLC, a paradigm shift has taken place in which immunotherapy is often added to chemotherapy for extensive-stage disease in the frontline setting or as monotherapy in the relapsed setting. Nivolumab is a programmed death 1 receptor blocking antibody previously FDA indicated for the treatment of metastatic SCLC with progression after platinum-based chemotherapy and at least one other line of therapy. Nivolumab, like all immune checkpoint inhibitor therapies, is associated with immune-mediated adverse reactions; however, there are few reported cases of nivolumab-induced TLS. We present a case of nivolumab-induced TLS following a single infusion. An 86-year-old female with a history of widely metastatic SCLC with metastasis to the liver, bone, and lymph nodes presented to the hospital following a fall due to weakness, dizziness, slurred speech, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain occurring 6 days after receiving her first nivolumab infusion. After extensive evaluation, the patient was diagnosed with TLS with hyperkalemia, acute renal failure, hyperphosphatemia, and hypocalcemia. She was treated aggressively with intravenous fluids, rasburicase, and sodium polystyrene sulfate (Kayexalate®), which resulted in rapid improvement of her electrolytes and renal function. However, despite correction of electrolytes and overall symptomatic improvement, over the course of several days, the patient's condition rapidly deteriorated with increasing dyspnea, lethargy, confusion, and eventually death. TLS following nivolumab is exceedingly rare. This report highlights the potential risk of development of TLS with checkpoint inhibitor therapy.

CONTEXT: Modern science and the classic text on hatha yoga, Hatha Yoga Pradipika, report physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and relational benefits of yoga practice. While all have specific suggestions for how to practice, little research has been done to ascertain whether specific practice approaches impact the benefits experienced by practitioners. AIMS: Our aim was to relate the experience level of the practitioner, the context of practice approaches (time of day, duration of practice, frequency of practice, etc.), and experience level of the teacher, to the likelihood of reporting particular benefits of yoga. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional descriptive survey of yoga practitioners across levels and styles of practice. Data were compiled from a large voluntary convenience sample (n = 2620) regarding respondents' methods of practice, yoga experience levels, and benefits experienced. Multiple logistic regression was used to identify approaches to yoga practice that positively predicted particular benefits. RESULTS: Frequency of practice, either with or without a teacher, was a positive predictor of reporting nearly all benefits of yoga, with an increased likelihood of experiencing most benefits when the practitioner did yoga five or more days per week. Other aspects of practice approach, experience level of the practitioner, and the experience level of the teacher, had less effect on the benefits reported. CONCLUSIONS: Practice frequency of at least 5 days per week will provide practitioners with the greatest amount of benefit across all categories of benefits. Other practice approaches can vary more widely without having a marked impact on most benefits experienced.

BACKGROUND: The risk of injury from modern yoga asana practice is poorly characterized in the scientific literature, but anecdotal reports in the lay literature and press have posed questions about the possibility of frequent, severe injuries. DESIGN: We performed a cross-sectional survey of yoga asana participants assessing their experience with yoga-related injury, using a voluntary convenience sample. RESULTS: A total of 2620 participants responded to our survey. Seventy-nine percent were between ages 31 and 60 and 84% were female. The majority of respondents lived in North America or Europe. Forty-five percent of participants reported experiencing no injuries during the time they had been practicing yoga. Of those who did experience an injury from asana practice, 28% were mild (e.g., sprains or nonspecific pains not requiring a medical procedure, with symptoms lasting less than 6 months) and 63% were moderate (e.g., sprains or nonspecific pains not requiring a medical procedure, with symptoms lasting from 6 months to 1 year). Only 9% of those reporting injuries (4% of the total sample) had a severe injury. The strongest predictors for increased probability of reporting an injury over a lifetime of yoga practice were greater number of years of practice (p < .0001) and teaching yoga (p = .0177). Other aspects of participant demographics or yoga practice habits were not related to likelihood of reporting a yoga-related injury. CONCLUSIONS: We found the number of injuries reported by yoga participants per years of practice exposure to be low and the occurrence of serious injuries in yoga to be infrequent compared to other physical activities, suggesting that yoga is not a high-risk physical activity. More work is needed to clarify the causal relationships between the yoga participant characteristics, the asana practice style, and the risk of significant injury.

Nutrient losses from residential lawns and landscapes can negatively impact water quality. Information about nutrient leaching from established residential landscapes containing a mixture of woody ornamental plants and turfgrass is limited. The objective of our study was to determine the effect of vegetation cover (turfgrass vs. woody ornamental) on nutrient leaching from established landscapes. Nine drainage lysimeters were planted with three vegetation treatments with the following coverage: (i) 60% turfgrass, 40% ornamental; (ii) 75% turfgrass, 25% ornamental; and (iii) 90% turfgrass, 10% ornamental. Daily leachate samples were collected and combined to produce weekly flow-weighted samples for 1 yr. Leachate samples were analyzed for total Kjeldahl N (TKN), nitrate (+ nitrite)-N (NO), ammonium-N (NH-N), and dissolved reactive phosphorus (DRP). The ratio of actual evapotranspiration (ET) to reference evapotranspiration (ET) was similar among treatments. However, drainage from the 90% turfgrass lysimeters was periodically higher than from the 60 and/or 75% turfgrass treatments. In most cases, leachate N and P concentrations and loads followed the same trend as drainage. The addition of shrubs in the 60 and 75% turfgrass treatments reduced leachate when rainfall was low and irrigation was the main water input. We suggest that established woody ornamental plants are more effective at absorbing water and nutrients than turfgrass due, in part, to increased root biomass and deeper rooting of established woody plants, which allows for more efficient uptake of soil water and nutrients. The use of woody plants in residential landscapes can reduce nutrient leaching in urban areas.

Research evaluating nutrient losses during the establishment of plant material in mixed residential landscapes is limited. The objectives of this study were to determine the effect of vegetative cover type, compost application, and tillage on nutrient losses during the establishment of landscape plants. Twenty-four small plots constructed with subsoil fill were planted with St. Augustinegrass [ (Walter) Kuntze] and mixed ornamental species in a randomized complete block design. Plots received composted dairy manure solids at a rate of 0 or 50.8 m ha- in combination with shallow tillage or aeration. Cumulative leachate loads and flow-weighted mean concentrations of NH-N, NO + NO-N, and dissolved reactive P (DRP) were calculated periodically and annually to assess nutrient leaching from landscape plots. Higher cumulative leachate volume, inorganic N and DRP loads, and mean NO + NO-N and DRP concentrations were observed under ornamental cover during one or more study periods, which we attribute to differences in root density and shoot biomass between mixed ornamental species and turfgrass during establishment. Greater cumulative leachate inorganic N loads were reported from composted soils than from unamended soils or soils receiving only tillage or aeration. Inorganic N and DRP loads were similar in magnitude to reported leaching losses from agricultural systems. Better management of nutrients and water in woody ornamental plant beds during plant establishment is needed due to differences in plant growth habits compared with turfgrass. Nutrient content of organic amendments should be considered when applying these materials as a soil conditioner in new residential landscapes.
