Distance examination is an important part of veterinary investigation into ruminant herd health and welfare. The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) explored the use of drones to conduct assessments of the health and welfare status of sheep and cattle. Three methods of distance examination were compared comprising observations; from a vehicle, a "micro" category drone and a "very small" category drone. The disturbance and behavioural reactions caused by the methods were compared. Assessments of adverse health and welfare conditions by each method were compared to observations made at yarding. The preferred method was the use of the very small drone which had the best sensitivity for detection of conditions potentially associated with adverse health or welfare and the best optics at a distance that did not disturb the animals. The optics of the very small drone enabled distance examination without disturbance in both cattle and sheep. Cattle were more sensitive to the presence of the drones than sheep. The micro drone was unable to approach cattle close enough to allow undisturbed distance examination. All methods had similar specificity, however, sensitivity varied markedly. The very small drone had the best sensitivity 86% which was statistically greater than the micro drone (44%, P = 0.05) and better than the vehicle observations, which had sensitivity of 77% (not statistically significant). The selection of an appropriate drone model is essential for accurate distance examination. Distance examination of livestock with drones of suitable optic quality and resolution represents an effective method for assessing animal health and welfare.

Objective: We undertook a comprehensive cross-sectional analysis of a multicentred Australian cohort of systemic sclerosis (SSc) patients to evaluate the associations of anti-Ro52/TRIM21 with SSc pulmonary involvement.Method: The study included 596 patients from the Australian Scleroderma Cohort Study database whose anti-Ro52/TRIM21 status was known. Anti-Ro52/TRIM21 was measured via line immunoassay. Data on demographic variables, autoantibody profiles, presence of interstitial lung disease (ILD), presence of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), oxygen saturation, Six-Minute Walk Test distance, Borg dyspnoea score, and lung function tests were extracted. SPSS software was used to examine associations using univariate and multivariate analyses.Results: Anti-Ro52/TRIM21 was present in 34.4% of SSc patients. In the cross-sectional analysis, anti-Ro52/TRIM21 was independently associated with PAH [odds ratio 1.75, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.05-2.90], but not ILD or other surrogate measures of pulmonary involvement such as average patient oxygen saturation. The antibody, however, was also associated with a higher forced vital capacity/diffusing capacity of the lung for carbon monoxide ratio. Prospectively, anti-Ro52/TRIM21 was also associated with an increased risk of death in patients with SSc (hazard ratio 1.62, 95% CI 1.11-2.35), independent of confounding factors. The primary cause of death appeared to be related to PAH and/or ILD, and anti-Ro52/TRIM21 was associated with PAH-related complications.Conclusion: Anti-Ro52/TRIM21 was independently associated with PAH and mortality in SSc patients. Future longitudinal studies are recommended to investigate the timing and pathogenic mechanisms of this autoantibody in PAH.

Because the alveolar macrophage (AM) phenotype of horses with severe equine asthma (SEA) is unknown, the cytokines expressed by M1- and M2-polarized AM were determined and the hypothesis that natural hay/straw challenge (NC) induces divergent AM phenotypes in control horses and horses with SEA was tested. Macrophages from control horses were activated either with eIFNγ + lipolysaccharide (LPS) or eIL-4 to characterize M1- or M2-polarized AM gene expression, respectively and determine the response of polarized cells to pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPS): LPS, zymosan, peptidoglycan and hay dust. Subsequently, gene expression was explored in AM of control horses and horses with SEA at pasture and after NC. M1 polarization increased expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNFα, IL-8, IL-12p40), IL-10, and CD80. M2 polarization increased CD206 and down-regulated arginase-II and IL-10. Expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines and CD80 in response to PAMPS was further increased by M1 pre-polarization whereas M2 pre-polarization down-regulated expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines and IL-10 but increased CD206. In horses with SEA, AMs had elevated expression of IL-10 both at pasture and after NC, but only after NC in control horses. CD206 expression increased in both groups during NC. At pasture, stimulation by PAMPS augmented expression of IL-8 and IL-10 in horses with SEA compared to control horses. NC eliminated this difference by selectively increasing expression of IL-10 in control horses. A fundamental shift in the macrophage phenotype in SEA is supported by consistently elevated production of IL-10. A similar non-canonical phenotype develops temporarily in control horses upon NC suggesting that AMs in horses with SEA have lost the ability to respond dynamically to environmental cues.

BACKGROUND: Equine herpesvirus type 1 (EHV-1) is the cause of respiratory disease, abortion storms, and outbreaks of herpesvirus myeloencephalopathy (EHM). Infection of the spinal cord is characterised by multifocal regions of virally infected vascular endothelium, associated with vasculitis, thrombosis and haemorrhage that result in ischaemia and organ dysfunction. However, the mechanism of thrombosis in affected horses is unknown. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate tissue factor (TF) procoagulant activity and thrombin-antithrombin complex (TAT) levels in horses following infection with EHV-1. STUDY DESIGN: In vitro and in vivo studies following experimental EHV-1 infection. METHODS: Horses were infected with EHV-1 and levels of peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC)-associated TF activity; plasma and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)-derived microvesicle (MV)-associated TF activity and TAT complexes in plasma were examined. RESULTS: EHV-1 infection increased PBMC TF procoagulant activity in vitro and in vivo. In infected horses, this increase was observed during the acute infection and was most marked at the onset and end of viraemia. However, no significant differences were observed between the horses that showed signs of EHM and the horses that did not develop EHM. Significant changes in MV-associated TF procoagulant activity and TAT complexes were not observed in infected horses. MAIN LIMITATIONS: A small number of horses typically exhibit clinical EHM following experimental infection. CONCLUSIONS: The results indicate that EHV-1 infection increases PBMC-associated TF procoagulant activity in vivo and in vitro. Additional in vivo studies are needed to better understand the role of TF-dependent coagulation during EHM pathogenesis in horses.

The genomic sequences of 20 Leishmania infantum isolates collected in northeastern Brazil were compared with each other and with the available genomic sequences of 29 L. infantum/donovani isolates from Nepal and Turkey. The Brazilian isolates were obtained in the early 1990s or since 2009 from patients with visceral or non-ulcerating cutaneous leishmaniasis, asymptomatic humans, or dogs with visceral leishmaniasis. Two isolates were from the blood and bone marrow of the same visceral leishmaniasis patient. All 20 genomic sequences display 99.95% identity with each other and slightly less identity with a reference L. infantum genome from a Spanish isolate. Despite the high identity, analysis of individual differences among the 32 million base pair genomes showed sufficient variation to allow the isolates to be clustered based on the primary sequence. A major source of variation detected was in chromosome somy, with only four of the 36 chromosomes being predominantly disomic in all 49 isolates examined. In contrast, chromosome 31 was predominantly tetrasomic/pentasomic, consistent with its regions of synteny on two different disomic chromosomes of Trypanosoma brucei. In the Brazilian isolates, evidence for recombination was detected in 27 of the 36 chromosomes. Clustering analyses suggested two populations, in which two of the five older isolates from the 1990s clustered with a majority of recent isolates. Overall the analyses do not suggest individual sequence variants account for differences in clinical outcome or adaptation to different hosts. For the first known time, DNA of isolates from asymptomatic subjects were sequenced. Of interest, these displayed lower diversity than isolates from symptomatic subjects, an observation that deserves further investigation with additional isolates from asymptomatic subjects.

Lipid bodies (LBs) are intracellular accumulations of neutral lipids surrounded by a single membrane. These organelles are involved in the production of eicosanoids, which modulate immunity by either promoting or dampening inflammatory responses. Leishmania infantum, the etiological agent of visceral leishmaniasis in Brazil, is an intracellular parasite that causes disease by suppressing macrophage microbicidal responses. C57BL/6 mouse bone marrow-derived macrophages infected with L. infantum strain LcJ had higher numbers of LB+ cells (P<.0001) and total LBs than noninfected cultures. Large (>3 µm) LBs were present inside parasitophorous vacuoles (PVs). These results contrast with those of L. infantum-infected BALB/c macrophages, in which the only LBs are derived from parasite, not macrophage origin. Increased LBs in C57BL/6 macrophages in close association with parasites would position host LBs where they could modulate L. infantum infection. These results imply a potential influence of the host genetics on the role of LBs in host-pathogen interactions. Overall, our data support a model in which the expression, and the role of LBs upon infection, ultimately depends on the specific combination of host-pathogen interactions.

Study question: Do naturally occurring, hyperandrogenic (≥1 SD of population mean testosterone, T) female rhesus monkeys exhibit traits typical of women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)? Summary answer: Hyperandrogenic female monkeys exhibited significantly increased serum levels of androstenedione (A4), 17-hydroxyprogesterone (17-OHP), estradiol (E2), LH, antimullerian hormone (AMH), cortisol, 11-deoxycortisol and corticosterone, as well as increased uterine endometrial thickness and evidence of reduced fertility, all traits associated with PCOS. What is known already: Progress in treating women with PCOS is limited by incomplete knowledge of its pathogenesis and the absence of naturally occurring PCOS in animal models. A female macaque monkey, however, with naturally occurring hyperandrogenism, anovulation and polyfollicular ovaries, accompanied by insulin resistance, increased adiposity and endometrial hyperplasia, suggests naturally occurring origins for PCOS in nonhuman primates. Study design, size, duration: As part of a larger study, circulating serum concentrations of selected pituitary, ovarian and adrenal hormones, together with fasted insulin and glucose levels, were determined in a single, morning blood sample obtained from 120 apparently healthy, ovary-intact, adult female rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) while not pregnant or nursing. The monkeys were then sedated for somatometric and ultrasonographic measurements. Participants/materials, setting, methods: Female monkeys were of prime reproductive age (7.2 ± 0.1 years, mean ± SEM) and represented a typical spectrum of adult body weight (7.4 ± 0.2 kg; maximum 12.5, minimum 4.6 kg). Females were defined as having normal (n = 99) or high T levels (n = 21; ≥1 SD above the overall mean, 0.31 ng/ml). Electronic health records provided menstrual and fecundity histories. Steroid hormones were determined by tandem LC-MS-MS; AMH was measured by enzymeimmunoassay; LH, FSH and insulin were determined by radioimmunoassay; and glucose was read by glucose meter. Most analyses were limited to 80 females (60 normal T, 20 high T) in the follicular phase of a menstrual cycle or anovulatory period (serum progesterone <1 ng/ml). Main results and the role of chance: Of 80 monkeys, 15% (n = 12) exhibited classifiable PCOS-like phenotypes. High T females demonstrated elevations in serum levels of LH (P < 0.036), AMH (P < 0.021), A4 (P < 0.0001), 17-OHP (P < 0.008), E2 (P < 0.023), glucocorticoids (P < 0.02-0.0001), the serum T/E2 ratio (P < 0.03) and uterine endometrial thickness (P < 0.014) compared to normal T females. Within the high T group alone, anogenital distance, a biomarker for fetal T exposure, positively correlated (P < 0.015) with serum A4 levels, while clitoral volume, a biomarker for prior T exposure, positively correlated (P < 0.002) with postnatal age. Only high T females demonstrated positive correlations between serum LH, and both T and A4. Five of six (83%) high T females with serum T ≥2 SD above T mean (0.41 ng/ml) did not produce live offspring. Large scale data: N/A. Limitations, reasons for caution: This is an initial study of a single laboratory population in a single nonhuman primate species. While two biomarkers suggest lifelong hyperandrogenism, phenotypic expression during gestation, prepuberty, adolescence, mid-to-late reproductive years and postmenopause has yet to be determined. Wider implications of the findings: Characterizing adult female monkeys with naturally occurring hyperandrogenism has identified individuals with high LH and AMH combined with infertility, suggesting developmental linkage among traits with endemic origins beyond humans. PCOS may thus be an ancient phenotype, as previously proposed, with a definable pathogenic mechanism(s). Maternal and progeny diets supplemented with 2 sources of trace mineral (TM) were evaluated for effects on the size and severity of osteochondrosis (OC) lesions in progeny produced by 64 Landrace × Large White sows. At breeding, sows were randomly assigned to maternal diets (gestation and lactation) consisting 1 of 2 TM treatments. One treatment consisted of inorganic TM (ITM) with ZnO, MnSO, and CuSO at concentrations to provide 150, 50, and 16.5 mg/kg diet of Zn, Mn, and Cu, respectively. The other treatment consisted of the same ITM concentrations plus an additional 50, 20, and 10 mg/kg diet of Zn, Mn, and Cu, respectively, supplied by a blend of AA-complexed TM (CTM) using Availa Sow. Within maternal dietary treatment groups, selected progeny ( = 280) were fed either ITM- or CTM-supplemented diets. The humerus and femur (1 each) from progeny euthanized at 12 ( = 80) or 24 wk ( = 200) were collected for microscopic (12 wk) or gross (24 wk) assessment of OC lesions. Microscopic OC lesions were present in all pigs at 12 wk. Dietary treatments had limited effects on OC prevalence or severity. A maternal × progeny diet interaction ( = 0.044) revealed femoral OC latens lesions that were approximately twice the size in progeny fed CTM that were produced by sows fed CTM compared with those found in pigs in the other 3 dietary treatment groups. At 24 wk, the sum of gross OC scores at predilection sites of the thoracic (elbow joint) and pelvic (stifle and hock joints) limbs remained similar among treatments, despite greater ( = 0.004) gross OC scores of the medial femoral condyle in progeny from sows fed CTM diets than in progeny from sows fed ITM diets, regardless of progeny diet. Progeny produced by sows fed CTM vs. ITM had increased ADG (0.71 vs. 0.68 ± 0.01 kg/d), regardless of the diet fed to progeny during the growth phases. Covariant analysis using ADG did not alter inferences about maternal or progeny diet effects on OC responses. Although 100% of progeny at 12 wk had histologically apparent OC lesions, only 3 of the 200 pigs examined at 24 wk had gross lesions of sufficient severity to potentially result in clinically apparent disease. Therefore, although some results imply that maternal and progeny CTM diets increased the size (12 wk) and severity (24 wk) of OC in 1 site (the femur), on the whole animal level, no evidence of lameness was noted.

PurposeThe purpose of this study was to examine the preoperative factors and postoperative outcomes following intraocular lens (IOL) exchange for high myopia in pseudophakic children.MethodsThe medical records of all patients undergoing IOL exchange for high myopia were retrospectively reviewed.ResultsA total of 15 eyes were identified that had undergone an IOL exchange for myopic shift. Average age of cataract extraction (CE) was 5.4 months. In all, 10/15 had a unilateral cataract. IOL exchange usually occurred at an average of 6 years following cataract surgery. The average spherical equivalent (SE) of the refractive error at that time was -9.6 D. Following IOL exchange, SE was -1.3 D. A two-line reduction in best-corrected visual acuity was observed in 1/13 of our patients for whom pre- and post-exchange data were available. The average axial length (AL) of the eye undergoing the IOL exchange was 24.0 mm, average AL in the non-operative eye was 22.1 mm. On average, the operative eyes grew 4.4 mm and the non-operative eyes 3.02 mm. No adverse events were seen in the operative eyes.ConclusionYounger age at the time of CE creates a greater likelihood of AL elongation and predisposes a child to myopic shift. IOL exchange should be considered an option to reduce anisometropia and associated aniseikonia to improve visual outcomes. Successful visual rehabilitation and predictable post-exchange refractions were seen with our patients.

PurposeTo evaluate safety and efficacy of difluprednate 0.05% ophthalmic emulsion for treatment of postoperative inflammation after cataract surgery in pediatric patients.MethodsThis was a phase 3B, multicentre, randomized, double-masked, active-controlled study of patients aged 0-3 years who underwent uncomplicated cataract surgery in one eye, with/without intraocular lens implantation. Patients were randomized to receive difluprednate 0.05% four times daily or prednisolone acetate 1% for 14 days post surgery, followed by tapering for 14 days. Safety included evaluation of adverse events. Primary efficacy was the proportion of patients with an anterior cell grade of 0 (no cells) at day 14; secondary efficacy was a global inflammation score.ResultsForty patients were randomized to each treatment group. Adverse drug reactions included corneal oedema (difluprednate 0.5%, n=1; prednisolone acetate 1%, n=0) and increased intraocular pressure or ocular hypertension (n=2/group). Mean intraocular pressure values during treatment were 2-3 mm Hg higher with difluprednate 0.05% compared with prednisolone acetate 1%; mean values were similar between groups by the first week after treatment cessation. At 2 weeks post surgery, the incidence of complete clearing of anterior chamber cells was similar between groups (difluprednate 0.05%, n=30 (78.9%); prednisolone acetate 1%, n=31 (77.5%). Compared with prednisolone acetate 1%, approximately twice as many difluprednate 0.05%-treated patients had a global inflammation assessment score indicating no inflammation on day 1 (n=12 (30.8%) vs n=7 (17.5%) and day 8 (n=18 (48.7%) vs n=10 (25.0%).ConclusionsDifluprednate 0.05% four times daily showed safety and efficacy profiles similar to prednisolone acetate 1% four times daily in children 0-3 years undergoing cataract surgery.

PurposeThe purpose of this study was to determine the long-term complications and outcomes of secondary intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in patients with congenital cataracts.Patients and MethodsThe medical records of children operated for secondary IOL implantation surgery between 2000 and 2014 were retrospectively reviewed. Those who had undergone their initial congenital cataract surgery before 7 months of age were included and were analyzed for intra- and postoperative factors and postoperative refractive outcomes. We focused on three complications: visual axis opacification (VAO), glaucoma, and IOL exchange after at least 1 year of follow-up.ResultsA total of 49 eyes of 49 patients were analyzed for intraoperative indications. Of those, 37 eyes of 37 patients had at least 1 year of follow-up and were analyzed for postoperative outcomes. The mean age at secondary implantation was 55.2±21.6 months. At secondary implantation, 69.4% of eyes were implanted in the capsular bag, 28.6% in the sulcus, and 2.0% that were angle-supported. There was no significant correlation between the site of secondary IOL implantation and age at implantation (P=0.216). The mean follow-up after implantation was 57.6±33.6 months. The rate of VAO was 5.4%, the rate of glaucoma occurring after secondary implantation was 16.2%, and the rate of IOL exchange was 2.7%. The median visual acuity at final follow-up was 20/40. For patients with unilateral cataracts it was 20/60 and for bilateral patients it was 20/30.ConclusionsThe secondary IOL implantation in children is a relatively safe procedure associated with low rates of postoperative complications. Visual outcomes are acceptable and are better for bilateral patients than for unilateral patients.

PurposeThe objective of this study was to investigate preoperative factors associated with postoperative visual acuity outcomes and to develop a model to predict visual acuity prognosis.MethodsA retrospective study was conducted by reviewing clinical charts of pediatric patients who underwent bilateral cataract surgery by a single surgeon (MEW) at the Storm Eye Institute. A multiple logistic regression model was constructed to predict the odds of poor postoperative visual acuity, that is, worse than 20/40, based on age at surgery, gender, primary intraocular lens (IOL) placement, ethnicity, and preoperative nystagmus.ResultsA sample size of 157 children (314 eyes) was investigated with median duration of follow-up of 6.4 years. A total of 78% of children with bilateral cataract had postoperative visual acuity of 20/40 or better. The presence of preoperative nystagmus was highly correlated with poor postoperative visual acuity (OR=6.0; 95% CLs, 2.5-14.1; P-value<0.0001). Children of age <1 year at time of cataract extraction (OR=3.2; 95% CLs, 1.4-7.6; P-value=0.0073), male gender (OR=2.3; 95% CLs, 1.1-4.5; P-value=0.02), the absence of primary IOL placement (OR=3.0; 95% CLs, 1.05-8.4; P-value=0.04), and non-Caucasian ethnicity (OR=2.0; 95% CLs, 1.02-4.03; P-value 0.0447) were associated with poor visual acuity postoperatively.ConclusionsSatisfactory visual outcomes occurred in 78% of children operated on for bilateral cataracts. Preoperative nystagmus, age <1 year at time of cataract extraction, absence of primary IOL placement, male gender, and non-Caucasian ethnicity, were all factors associated with poor postoperative visual acuity.

Each year in the United States, nearly 500,000 infants a year are born prematurely. Babies born before 35 weeks gestation are often placed on ventilators and/or given supplemental oxygen. This increase in oxygen, while critical for survival, can cause long-term damage to lungs, retinas and brains. In particular, hyperoxia causes apoptosis in neurons and alters glial activity. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) are members of the neurotrophin family of proteins that function to promote the growth, differentiation and development of the nervous system. We hypothesized that hyperoxia can alter the regulation of these genes and by doing so adversely affect the development of the brain. We predicted that mice exposed to hyperoxic conditions would have differences in BDNF and GDNF mRNA expression and relative level of methylated promoter regions coinciding with differences in the relative levels of DNMT1 and DNMT3a mRNA expression. To test this hypothesis, newborn C57Bl/6 mice and their littermates were placed in hyperoxic or normoxic conditions from postnatal day 7 to 12. There were significant decreases in BDNF mRNA expression in the prefrontal cortex following hyperoxia, but a significant increase in the isocortex. GDNF mRNA expression was significantly increased in both the isocortex and prefrontal cortex following hyperoxia. DNMT1 mRNA expression was significantly decreased in the isocortex but significantly increased in the prefrontal following hyperoxia. Together these data suggest that short-term exposure to hyperoxic conditions can affect the regulation and expression of BDNF and GDNF potentially leading to alterations in neural development.

Neutrophils (PMNs) are recruited in high numbers to sites of host infection by the protozoan parasites of the genus Leishmania. Although PMNs are capable of phagocytizing Leishmania parasites and are potent producers of anti-microbial compounds including reactive oxygen species (ROS), they are unable to control the establishment of infection. Prior studies document production of ROS in isolated PMNs incubated with Leishmania under conditions allowing phagocytosis, but without a measure of single cells' responses it cannot be discerned whether PMN activation and ROS production is suppressed or ineffective in the cells that internalize the parasite. To address these interactions, we engineered a strain of fluorescent, mCherry-expressing Leishmania infantum (mCherry-Li). By infecting isolated human PMNs in vitro with mCherry-Li, we observed ready association of the parasites with PMNs in a time- and dose-dependent fashion. We also examined production of PMN ROS (using the fluorescent compound DHR123) and PMN activation (as evidence by loss of surface CD62L expression). Whereas many Li-associated (mCherry+) PMNs responded to parasite interactions and uptake with ROS production and/or activation, a proportion exhibited neither response. Furthermore, a large proportion of mCherry - "bystander" PMNs displayed both ROS production and activation. The heterogeneous response of PMNs to Leishmania exposure leads us to hypothesize, first, that some PMNs exhibit decreased activation upon phagocytosis of Leishmania, and could support their maintenance. Second, responses of bystander PMNs may contribute to a local inflammatory environment that is ineffective at parasite clearance.

Dietary zinc (inorganic and organic or zinc AA complex forms) is essential for normal intestinal barrier function and regeneration of intestinal epithelium. Given that heat stress (HS) exposure can negatively affect intestinal integrity and caloric intake, possible nutritional mitigation strategies are needed to improve health, performance, and well-being. Therefore, our objective was to evaluate 2 dietary zinc sources and reduced caloric intake on intestinal integrity in growing pigs subjected to 12 h of HS. A total of 36 pigs were fed 1 of 2 diets: 1) a control diet (CON; 120 mg/kg of zinc from zinc sulfate) or 2) 60 mg/kg from zinc sulfate and 60 mg/kg from zinc AA complex (ZnAA). After 17 d, the CON pigs were then exposed to thermal neutral (TN) conditions with ad libitum intake (TN-CON), HS (37°C) with ad libitum intake (HS-CON), or pair-fed to HS intake under TN conditions (PFTN); the ZnAA pigs were exposed to only HS (HS-ZnAA). All pigs were sacrificed after 12 h of environmental exposure, and blood and tissue bioenergetics stress markers and ex vivo ileum and colon integrity were assessed. Compared with TN-CON, HS significantly ( < 0.05) increased rectal temperatures and respiration rates. Ileum villus and crypt morphology was reduced by both pair-feeding and HS. Both PFTN and HS-CON pigs also had reduced ileum integrity (dextran flux and transepithelial resistance) compared with the TN-CON pigs. However, ZnAA tended to mitigate the HS-induced changes in ileum integrity. Ileum mucin 2 protein abundance was increased due to HS and pair-feeding. Colonic integrity did not differ due to HS or PFTN treatments. Compared with the HS-CON, HS-ZnAA pigs tended to have reduced blood endotoxin concentrations. In conclusion, HS and reduced feed intake compromised intestinal integrity in pigs, and zinc AA complex source mitigates some of these negative effects.

Social subordination in macaque females is a known chronic stressor and previous studies have shown that socially subordinate female rhesus monkeys consume fewer kilocalories than dominant animals when a typical laboratory chow diet is available. However, in a rich dietary environment that provides access to chow in combination with a more palatable diet (i.e. high in fat and refined sugar), subordinate animals consume significantly more daily kilocalories than dominant conspecifics. Substantial literature is available supporting the role of stress hormone signals in shaping dietary preferences and promoting the consumption of palatable, energy-dense foods. The present study was conducted using stable groups of adult female rhesus monkeys to test the hypothesis that pharmacological treatment with a brain penetrable corticotrophin-releasing factor type 1 receptor (CRF1) antagonist would attenuate the stress-induced consumption of a palatable diet among subordinate animals in a rich dietary environment but would be without effect in dominant females. The results show that administration of the CRF1 receptor antagonist significantly reduced daily caloric intake of both available diets among subordinate females compared to dominant females. Importantly, multiple regression analyses showed that the attenuation in caloric intake in response to Antalarmin (Sigma-Aldrich, St Louis, MO, USA) was significantly predicted by the frequency of submissive and aggressive behaviour emitted by females, independent of social status. Taken together, the findings support the involvement of activation of CRF1 receptors in the stress-induced consumption of excess calories in a rich dietary environment and also support the growing literature concerning the importance of CRF for sustaining emotional feeding.
