RESUMO

This study investigated differences in QEEG measures between kinesthetic and visual imagery of a 100-m swim in 36 elite competitive swimmers. Background information and post-trial checks controlled for the modality of imagery, swimming skill level, preferred imagery style, intensity of image and task equality. Measures of EEG relative magnitude in theta, low (7-9 Hz) and high alpha (8-10 Hz), and low and high beta were taken from 19 scalp sites during baseline, visual, and kinesthetic imagery. QEEG magnitudes in the low alpha band during the visual and kinesthetic conditions were attenuated from baseline in low band alpha but no changes were seen in any other bands. Swimmers produced more low alpha EEG magnitude during visual versus kinesthetic imagery. This was interpreted as the swimmers having a greater efficiency at producing visual imagery. Participants who reported a strong intensity versus a weaker feeling of the image (kinesthetic) had less low alpha magnitude, i.e., there was use of more cortical resources, but not for the visual condition. These data suggest that low band (7-9 Hz) alpha distinguishes imagery modalities from baseline, visual imagery requires less cortical resources than kinesthetic imagery, and that intense feelings of swimming requires more brain activity than less intense feelings.

RESUMO

Coronary artery disease has emerged as an important cause of death in young patients with SLE. We report three cases of acute myocardial infarction in young lupus patients who underwent emergent coronary angiography. One patient had a large coronary aneurysm and died five months later from myocarditis. The other two patients underwent coronary angioplasty. The difficulty in distinguishing coronary arteritis from premature atherosclerosis and its relevance to methods of treatment is discussed.

RESUMO

Accelerated coronary ostial stenosis is an infrequent late complication of coronary artery catheter instrumentation during aortic valve surgery, PTCA, or coronary angiography. We report the first case of bilateral coronary artery ostial stenoses developing after cardiac catheterization and right coronary artery PTCA. In patients with worsening angina following cardiac catheterization or PTCA, accelerated ostial stenoses should not be over-looked in the differential diagnosis.

RESUMO

Thrombolytic therapy in acute myocardial infarction unequivocally has improved short- and long-term mortality. The fundamental goal of therapy for evolving myocardial infarction is early and sustained infarct vessel recanalization. The mechanisms linking an open artery with improved long-term survival and other clinical outcomes are presented with use of data from extensive clinical trials.

RESUMO

There are increasing numbers of self-referral stress-management programs, a few of which use group-relaxation techniques, but few data are available on the personalities of the symptomatic and asymptomatic clients who attend or on any changes in personality after the program. Scores on the Eysenck Personality Inventory, Multiple Health Locus of Control, and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory as well as demographic information were obtained from 255 adults who attended a 10-session, university-based, group-relaxation program. The symptomatic clients reported significantly less anxiety, less neuroticism, were more extraverted and ascribed less of their behavior to chance at a 1 month post-treatment follow-up than at intake. The small group of asymptomatic clients also reported less anxiety and neuroticism at the follow-up. There were no sex differences on the Eysenck inventory or the anxiety scales but there were for the Multiple Health internal and control scales. It was concluded that group relaxation appeared to improve mental health scores effectively for both stressed and nonstressed adults and that age was significantly related to some personality scores.

RESUMO

Increasing numbers of self-referral stress management programs are using relaxation and biofeedback techniques, but few data are available on the characteristics of the clients upon which one might base the design or improvement of a self-regulation program. The type, duration, and severity of stress problem, medication, and demographic information were obtained from 423 adults who attended a university-based stress clinic. The clients were classified into four symptom groups (anxiety, muscle tension headache, muscle tension, and "other") and one asymptomatic (personal growth) group. Ten sessions of cognitive and somatic relaxation techniques were provided, followed by a posttreatment improvement questionnaire. The asymptomatic group was significantly different from the stress groups, whereas the latter exhibited more similarities than differences. The groups reported an average improvement in well-being of 67%, and the majority of clients equally preferred the autogenic and progressive muscle relaxation therapies.

RESUMO

This study compared the effectiveness of electromyographic (EMG) biofeedback and relaxation treatment in producing flexibility increases at the hip joint. Retention of flexibility gains and changes in sprinting performance were also examined. Fifteen male and 15 female athletes, predominantly sprinters, were matched according to age, sex, and flexibility and were randomly assigned to one of three groups. The control group received only the testing, the biofeedback group received visual and auditory EMG training, and the relaxation group received modified PMR and imagery exercises. Subjects in the two experimental groups were given eight twice-weekly 10-minute sessions and then were retested for flexibility. Retention of flexibility was reassessed 2 and 4 weeks later. Sprint performance improved for all groups. EMG biofeedback and relaxation treatment methods were no more effective than stretching exercises used by the control group for improving flexibility during the treatment period, but they did produce evidence of superior flexibility gains in the retention period. This may be important as flexibility has been reported to be related to the incidence of injuries.

RESUMO

11 young adult men and 9 women in a running group, an organized exercise class (2 men and 10 women) and a group eating lunch at a YMHA (6 men and 4 women) were assessed as to pre- and post-State anxiety using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory. The three groups showed significant decreases in anxiety after the activity. This suggests that diversionary as well as causal influences may have been operative or an effect of testing.

RESUMO

In study I 10 male gymnasts were matched for hip flexibility and then randomly placed in either a control or a biofeedback group. After warm-up exercises, the control group practiced self-relaxation while the biofeedback group received EMG feedback from the hip extensors. Both groups significantly improved hip flexion from trial 1 to trial 9. The biofeedback group significantly improved more quickly across trials, as measured by slope analysis, than the control group. In Study II 15 female gymnasts were matched for flexibility than randomly placed in control, relaxation, or biofeedback plus relaxation groups. Each gymnast completed STAI (A-state), warm-up exercises, and a 10-minute treatment and was then tested for hip flexion. The control group received no treatment, the second group received modified progressive relaxation, while the last group received relaxation and EMG hip extensor feedback. All groups significantly improved from trial 1 to trial 8 with no one group superior to the others. There were no significant differences among groups for rate of improvement across trials. There were no significant correlations among state anxiety, age, and flexibility measures.

RESUMO

10 marathon runners and 10 joggers reported less depression on an adjective check list than 10 non-exercisers, as well as less confusion, more vigor. Marathoners scored better on each than joggers.
