RESUMO

Lithium tetrakis(4-boronatoaryl)borates were subjected to polycondensation reactions with selected polyhydroxyl monomers such as 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene (HHTP) and 2,3,6,7-tetrahydroxy-9,10-dimethylanthracene (THDMA). Obtained boronate-type ionic porous polymers TAB1-4 were characterized by PXRD, 6Li and 11B magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS NMR), FT-IR, SEM, and TGA. They exhibit relatively good sorption of H2 (up to 75 cm3/g STP), whereas N2 uptake at 77 K for lower pressure range is relatively poor (up to 50 cm3/g STP below P/P0 = 0.8). In addition, the effect of elongation of aryl arms in the tetraarylborate core on the materials' properties was studied. Thus, it was found that replacement of the 4-boronatophenyl with 4-boronatobiphenylyl group has a negative impact on the sorption characteristics.

RESUMO

A novel general protocol for the preparation of functionalized (COOH, CHO, C(O)NHtBu, B(OH)2) tetraphenyl- and tetrakis(4'-biphenylyl)borates is reported. It involves four-fold halogen-lithium exchange in potassium tetrakis(iodophenyl)borates and tetrakis(4'-bromobiphenylyl)borate) using t-BuLi in THF at -78 °C followed by treatment of the resulting tetralithio intermediates with electrophiles (CO2, DMF, t-BuNCO, B(OMe)3). X-ray crystal structures of ammonium tetrakis[4-(dihydroxyboryl)phenyl]borate, lithium tetrakis(3-carboxyphenyl)borate, and lithium tetrakis[4-(tert-butylcarbamoyl)phenyl]borate were determined showing a strong effect of the cation and polar functional group on supramolecular architecture.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Long-term effects of bariatric surgery in morbidly obese type 1 patients are unknown. Five to eight-year experience in the case series of type 1 diabetes subjects is presented. METHODS: Three poorly controlled type 1 diabetes patients, aged 19, 23, and 28 underwent Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery. RESULTS: Their maximum body weight reduction noted during the follow-up was between 27% and 31% of baseline body weight, insulin requirement decreased from 0.6-0.95 to 0.3-0.83 IU/kg, and absolute reduction in HbA(1c) was 3-4%. Significant improvement in blood pressure, plasma lipid profile, and microalbuminuria was noted. CONCLUSIONS: RYGB surgery in morbidly obese type 1 diabetes patients leads to a significant and maintained weight loss and results in remarkable improvement in blood glucose control and concomitant disorders. Bariatric surgery should be recommended to significantly obese type 1 diabetes patients as a means of reduction of vascular complications risk.

RESUMO

UNLABELLED: In literature, the reports on femoral hernia with acute appendicitis are scarce. It is mostly encounter in elderly women than men patients. Due to the scarcity of reported cases, no standard treatment is defined. We report a case of acute appendicitis in femoral hernia in middle-aged man. RESULTS: The main symptoms of appendicitis in femoral hernia are similar to those of incarcerated hernia, with painful swelling in the groin, but the differential trait is asymptomatic abdomen. The final diagnosis is usually made intra-operatively. CONCLUSION: In view of the fact that femoral hernia itself is more frequently encountered in elderly women patients, the cases of appendicitis contained in the hernial sac refer mostly to this population. However, a possibility of this condition developing also in middle-aged men cannot be excluded. Early surgical treatment is the only option to handle the problem.

RESUMO

Congenital lesions of the external nose appear during embryologic development. Their usual location is midline nasal area. The most common are dermoid cyst, glioma, encephalocele and meningocele. The histopatology confirms dermoid cyst in 60%. Diagnosis is based mainly on clinical examination of the patient. Computer tomography and magnetic resonance are useful to reveal the pathway of intracranial herniation or presence of associated anomalies of the cranial bones. A complete surgical removal of the lesion is the only effective treatment. In Plastic Surgery Clinic in Lodz, 20 patients 2-20 years old were operated between the years 1973-2004. Treatment consisted of simple surgical excision of the nasal lesion. The dermoid cyst was diagnosed in 55%. In 3 cases, where herniations were observed, a preparation and simple ligature was performed. The results of all operations were satisfactory. Congenital lesion of the external nose should be considered as dermoid cyst, glioma, encephalocele or meningocele. Complete excision is very important. Deformations of the nose after surgery are to be corrected after the facial skull growth process ends.
