Luminescence dosimetry was applied in the former settlement of Metlino, Southern Urals, Russia as part of a full-scale study to validate the Techa River Dosimetry System (TRDS) 2016 for the upper Techa River region. The village, which was evacuated in 1956, was located 7 km downstream of the release point of liquid radioactive waste by the Mayak plutonium facility. Several brick samples were taken from north-eastern and south-eastern walls of the granary, facing the former Techa river shoreline and floodplain. Samples were all taken at the same height and measured at different depths into the brick. For the majority of brick samples, good Optically Stimulated Luminescence properties of the quartz grains were observed. In some cases, however, strong levels of sensitization and/or signal recuperation were encountered which necessitated adjustment in the measurement protocols. Anthropogenic doses in bricks varied from 1.5 to 6.6 Gy and the horizontal profiles along both walls showed significant variation, which is explained on a qualitative basis. A dose depth profile is observed for selected samples, which is different from the dose depth profile measured and simulated for samples from the north-western wall of the granary in previous studies. This is qualitatively explained by the differences in source configuration.

Since 2012, the European Radiation Dosimetry Group (EURADOS) has developed its Strategic Research Agenda (SRA), which contributes to the identification of future research needs in radiation dosimetry in Europe. Continued scientific developments in this field necessitate regular updates and, consequently, this paper summarises the latest revision of the SRA, with input regarding the state of the art and vision for the future contributed by EURADOS Working Groups and through a stakeholder workshop. Five visions define key issues in dosimetry research that are considered important over at least the next decade. They include scientific objectives and developments in (i) updated fundamental dose concepts and quantities, (ii) improved radiation risk estimates deduced from epidemiological cohorts, (iii) efficient dose assessment for radiological emergencies, (iv) integrated personalised dosimetry in medical applications and (v) improved radiation protection of workers and the public. This SRA will be used as a guideline for future activities of EURADOS Working Groups but can also be used as guidance for research in radiation dosimetry by the wider community. It will also be used as input for a general European research roadmap for radiation protection, following similar previous contributions to the European Joint Programme for the Integration of Radiation Protection Research, under the Horizon 2020 programme (CONCERT). With the use of ionizing radiation comes the risk of accidents and malevolent misuse. When unplanned exposures occur, there are several methods which can be used to retrospectively reconstruct individual radiation exposures; biological methods include analysis of aberrations and damage of chromosomes and DNA, while physical methods rely on luminescence (TL/OSL) or EPR signals. To ensure the quality and dependability of these methods, they should be evaluated under realistic exposure conditions. In 2019, EURADOS Working Group 10 and RENEB organized a field test with the purpose of evaluating retrospective dosimetry methods as carried out in potential real-life exposure scenarios. A 1.36 TBq 192Ir source was used to irradiate anthropomorphic phantoms in different geometries at doses of several Gy in an outdoor open-air geometry. Materials intended for accident dosimetry (including mobile phones and blood) were placed on the phantoms together with reference dosimeters (LiF, NaCl, glass). The objective was to estimate radiation exposures received by individuals as measured using blood and fortuitous materials, and to evaluate these methods by comparing the estimated doses to reference measurements and Monte Carlo simulations. Herein we describe the overall planning, goals, execution and preliminary outcomes of the 2019 field test. Such field tests are essential for the development of new and existing methods. The outputs from this field test include useful experience in terms of planning and execution of future exercises, with respect to time management, radiation protection, and reference dosimetry to be considered to obtain relevant data for analysis.

This work presents an overview of the applications of retrospective dosimetry techniques in case of incorporation of radionuclides. The fact that internal exposures are characterized by a spatially inhomogeneous irradiation of the body, which is potentially prolonged over large periods and variable over time, is particularly problematic for biological and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) dosimetry methods when compared with external exposures. The paper gives initially specific information about internal dosimetry methods, the most common cytogenetic techniques used in biological dosimetry and EPR dosimetry applied to tooth enamel. Based on real-case scenarios, dose estimates obtained from bioassay data as well as with biological and/or EPR dosimetry are compared and critically discussed. In most of the scenarios presented, concomitant external exposures were responsible for the greater portion of the received dose. As no assay is available which can discriminate between radiation of different types and different LETs on the basis of the type of damage induced, it is not possible to infer from these studies specific conclusions valid for incorporated radionuclides alone. The biological dosimetry assays and EPR techniques proved to be most applicable in cases when the radionuclides are almost homogeneously distributed in the body. No compelling evidence was obtained in other cases of extremely inhomogeneous distribution. Retrospective dosimetry needs to be optimized and further developed in order to be able to deal with real exposure cases, where a mixture of both external and internal exposures will be encountered most of the times.

Luminescence dosimetry was performed using bricks from the former settlement of Metlino, Southern Urals, Russia, to investigate the feasibility of validating the Techa River Dosimetry System (TRDS) 2016 for the shore of the Metlinsky Pond, upper Techa River region. TRDS is a code for estimating external and internal doses for members of the Extended Techa River Cohort. Several brick samples were taken from the north-western wall of the granary, facing the Metlinsky Pond. Samples were measured at different heights and at different depths into the bricks. Dating of the granary was performed by analyzing well shielded bricks. Assessment of the gamma dose-rate at the sample positions was done by thermoluminescent dosimeters and the dose-rate in front of the granary mapped with a dose-rate meter. Anthropogenic doses in bricks vary from 0.8 to 1.7 Gy and show an increase with sampling height. A similar height profile is observed for the current gamma dose-rate, which is compatible with the results of the dose-rate mapping. Implications for validating the TRDS are discussed.

RESUMO

This paper provides a summary of the Education and Training (E&T) activities that have been developed and organised by the European Radiation Dosimetry Group (EURADOS) in recent years and in the case of Training Courses over the last decade. These E&T actions include short duration Training Courses on well-established topics organised within the activity of EURADOS Working Groups (WGs), or one-day events integrated in the EURADOS Annual Meeting (workshops, winter schools, the intercomparison participants' sessions and the learning network, among others). Moreover, EURADOS has recently established a Young Scientist Grant and a Young Scientist Award. The Grant supports young scientists by encouraging them to perform research projects at other laboratories of the EURADOS network. The Award is given in recognition of excellent work developed within the WGs' work programme. Additionally, EURADOS supports the dissemination of knowledge in radiation dosimetry by promoting and endorsing conferences such as the individual monitoring (IM) series, the neutron and ion dosimetry symposia (NEUDOS) and contributions to E&T sessions at specific events.

Biological dosimetry enables individual dose reconstruction in the case of unclear or inconsistent radiation exposure situations, especially when a direct measurement of ionizing radiation is not or is no longer possible. To be prepared for large-scale radiological incidents, networking between well-trained laboratories has been identified as a useful approach for provision of the fast and trustworthy dose assessments needed in such circumstances. To this end, various biodosimetry laboratories worldwide have joined forces and set up regional and/or nationwide networks either on a formal or informal basis. Many of these laboratories are also a part of global networks such as those organized by World Health Organization, International Atomic Energy Agency or Global Health Security Initiative. In the present report, biodosimetry networks from different parts of the world are presented, and the partners, activities and cooperation actions are detailed. Moreover, guidance for situational application of tools used for individual dosimetry is given.

Since the early 1980s, the European Radiation Dosimetry Group (EURADOS) has been maintaining a network of institutions interested in the dosimetry of ionising radiation. As of 2017, this network includes more than 70 institutions (research centres, dosimetry services, university institutes, etc.), and the EURADOS database lists more than 500 scientists who contribute to the EURADOS mission, which is to promote research and technical development in dosimetry and its implementation into practice, and to contribute to harmonisation of dosimetry in Europe and its conformance with international practices. The EURADOS working programme is organised into eight working groups dealing with environmental, computational, internal, and retrospective dosimetry; dosimetry in medical imaging; dosimetry in radiotherapy; dosimetry in high-energy radiation fields; and harmonisation of individual monitoring. Results are published as freely available EURADOS reports and in the peer-reviewed scientific literature. Moreover, EURADOS organises winter schools and training courses on various aspects relevant for radiation dosimetry, and formulates the strategic research needs in dosimetry important for Europe. This paper gives an overview on the most important EURADOS activities. More details can be found at www.eurados.org .

In the first years of its operation, the Mayak Production Association, a facility part of the Soviet nuclear weapons program in the Southern Urals, Russia, discharged large amounts of radioactively contaminated effluent into the nearby Techa River, thus exposing the people living at this river to external and internal radiations. The Techa River Cohort is a cohort intensely studied in epidemiology to investigate the correlation between low-dose radiation and health effects on humans. For the individuals in the cohort, the Techa River Dosimetry System describes the accumulated dose in human organs and tissues. In particular, organ doses from external exposure are derived from estimates of dose rate in air on the Techa River banks which were estimated from measurements and Monte Carlo modelling. Individual doses are calculated in accordance with historical records of individuals' residence histories, observational data of typical lifestyles for different age groups, and age-dependent conversion factors from air kerma to organ dose. The work here describes an experimentally independent assessment of the key input parameter of the dosimetry system, the integral air kerma, for the former village of Metlino, upper Techa River region. The aim of this work was thus to validate the Techa River Dosimetry System for the location of Metlino in an independent approach. Dose reconstruction based on dose measurements in bricks from a church tower and Monte Carlo calculations was used to model the historic air kerma accumulated in the time from 1949 to 1956 at the shoreline of the Techa River in Metlino. Main issues are caused by a change in the landscape after the evacuation of the village in 1956. Based on measurements and published information and data, two separate models for the historic pre-evacuation geometry and for the current geometry of Metlino were created. Using both models, a value for the air kerma was reconstructed, which agrees with that obtained in the Techa River Dosimetry System within a factor of two.

Since autumn 2012, the European Radiation Dosimetry Group (EURADOS) has been developing its Strategic Research Agenda (SRA), which is intended to contribute to the identification of future research needs in radiation dosimetry in Europe. The present article summarises-based on input from EURADOS Working Groups (WGs) and Voting Members-five visions in dosimetry and defines key issues in dosimetry research that are considered important for the next decades. The five visions include scientific developments required towards (a) updated fundamental dose concepts and quantities, (b) improved radiation risk estimates deduced from epidemiological cohorts, (c) efficient dose assessment for radiological emergencies, (d) integrated personalised dosimetry in medical applications and (e) improved radiation protection of workers and the public. The SRA of EURADOS will be used as a guideline for future activities of the EURADOS WGs. After an explosion of a radiological dispersal device, decision-makers need to implement countermeasures as soon as possible to minimise the radiation-induced risks to the population. In this work, the authors present a tool, which can help providing information about the approximate size of source term and radioactive contamination based on a Gaussian Plume model with the use of available measurements for liquid or aerosolised radioactivity. For two-field tests, the source term and spatial distribution of deposited radioactivity are estimated. A sensitivity analysis of the dependence on deposition velocity is carried out. In case of weak winds, a diffusive process along the wind direction is retained in the model.

RESUMO

In Europe, a network for biological dosimetry has been created to strengthen the emergency preparedness and response capabilities in case of a large-scale nuclear accident or radiological emergency. Through the RENEB (Realising the European Network of Biodosimetry) project, 23 experienced laboratories from 16 European countries will establish a sustainable network for rapid, comprehensive and standardised biodosimetry provision that would be urgently required in an emergency situation on European ground. The foundation of the network is formed by five main pillars: (1) the ad hoc operational basis, (2) a basis of future developments, (3) an effective quality-management system, (4) arrangements to guarantee long-term sustainability and (5) awareness of the existence of RENEB. RENEB will thus provide a mechanism for quick, efficient and reliable support within the European radiation emergency management. The scientific basis of RENEB will concurrently contribute to increased safety in the field of radiation protection.

The current focus on networking and mutual assistance in the management of radiation accidents or incidents has demonstrated the importance of a joined-up approach in physical and biological dosimetry. To this end, the European Radiation Dosimetry Working Group 10 on 'Retrospective Dosimetry' has been set up by individuals from a wide range of disciplines across Europe. Here, established and emerging dosimetry methods are reviewed, which can be used immediately and retrospectively following external ionising radiation exposure. Endpoints and assays include dicentrics, translocations, premature chromosome condensation, micronuclei, somatic mutations, gene expression, electron paramagnetic resonance, thermoluminescence, optically stimulated luminescence, neutron activation, haematology, protein biomarkers and analytical dose reconstruction. Individual characteristics of these techniques, their limitations and potential for further development are reviewed, and their usefulness in specific exposure scenarios is discussed. Whilst no single technique fulfils the criteria of an ideal dosemeter, an integrated approach using multiple techniques tailored to the exposure scenario can cover most requirements.

The dose response of the 375 degrees C. 470 nm TL peak in fired quartz is studied by using thermoluminescence emission spectra and monochromatic glow curves. The blue emission displays a significant sensitivity increase for doses in excess of 1000 Gy, subsequent saturation at 16 kGy and a pre-dose effect over the entire dose range. Comparison with the growth of the known electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) centres and radioluminescence emission spectra indicates that the [AlO4] centre is the recombination site for the blue emission, whereas the electron trap remains unknown. The sensitivity change seems to be linked to the dose-induced reduction of the [GeO4/Li] centre. Possible mechanisms for the observed dose response are discussed.

Na(+) absorption in the renal cortical collecting duct (CCD) is mediated by apical epithelial Na(+) channels (ENaCs). The CCD is subject to continuous variations in intraluminal flow rate that we speculate alters hydrostatic pressure, membrane stretch, and shear stress. Although ENaCs share limited sequence homology with putative mechanosensitive ion channels in Caenorhabditis elegans, controversy exists as to whether ENaCs are regulated by biomechanical forces. We examined the effect of varying the rate of fluid flow on whole cell Na(+) currents (I(Na)) in oocytes expressing mouse alpha,beta,gamma-ENaC (mENaC) and on net Na(+) absorption in microperfused rabbit CCDs. Oocytes injected with mENaC but not water responded to the initiation of superfusate flow (to 4-6 ml/min) with a reversible threefold stimulation of I(Na) without a change in reversal potential. The increase in I(Na) was variable among oocytes. CCDs responded to a threefold increase in rate of luminal flow with a twofold increase in the rate of net Na(+) absorption. An increase in luminal viscosity achieved by addition of 5% dextran to the luminal perfusate did not alter the rate of net Na(+) absorption, suggesting that shear stress does not influence Na(+) transport in the CCD. In sum, our data suggest that flow stimulation of ENaC activity and Na(+) absorption is mediated by an increase in hydrostatic pressure and/or membrane stretch. We propose that intraluminal flow rate may be an important regulator of channel activity in the CCD.

K+ secretion by the cortical collecting duct (CCD) is stimulated at high flow rates. Patch-clamp analysis has identified a small-conductance secretory K+ (SK) and a high-conductance Ca(2+)-activated K+ (maxi-K) channel in the apical membrane of the CCD. The SK channel, encoded by ROMK, is believed to mediate baseline K+ secretion. The role of the stretch- and Ca2+-activated maxi-K channel is still uncertain. The purpose of this study was to identify the K+ channel mediating flow-dependent K+ secretion in the CCD. Segments isolated from New Zealand White rabbits were microperfused in the absence and presence of luminal tetraethylammonium (TEA) or charybdotoxin, both inhibitors of maxi-K but not SK channels, or apamin, an inhibitor of small-conductance maxi-K+ channels. Net K+ secretion and Na+ absorption were measured at varying flow rates. In the absence of TEA, net K+ secretion increased from 8.3 +/- 1.0 to 23.4 +/- 4.7 pmol. min(-1). mm(-1) (P < 0.03) as the tubular flow rate was increased from 0.5 to 6 nl. min(-1). mm(-1). Flow stimulation of net K+ secretion was blocked by luminal TEA (8.2 +/- 1.2 vs. 9.9 +/- 2.7 pmol. min(-1). mm(-1) at 0.6 and 6 nl. min(-1). mm(-1) flow rates, respectively) or charybdotoxin (6.8 +/- 1.6 vs. 8.3 +/- 1.6 pmol. min(-1). mm(-1) at 1 and 4 nl. min(-1). mm(-1) flow rates, respectively) but not by apamin. These results suggest that flow-dependent K+ secretion is mediated by a maxi-K channel, whereas baseline K+ secretion occurs through a TEA- and charybdotoxin-insensitive SK (ROMK) channel.

To determine the tubular sites and mechanisms involved in enhanced renal phosphate (P(i)) reabsorption seen in the juvenile animal, renal micropuncture experiments were performed in acutely thyroparathyroidectomized adult (>14 wk old) and juvenile (4 wk old) male Wistar rats fed either a normal P(i) diet (NPD, 0.6% P(i)) or low P(i) diet (0.07% P(i)) for 2 days, in the presence and absence of parathyroid hormone (PTH). P(i) reabsorption was greater in proximal convoluted (PCT) and straight tubules (PST) of the juvenile compared with adult rats fed NPD, whether or not PTH was present. These findings were consistent with a greater P(i) uptake in brush-border membrane (BBM) vesicles from both superficial (SC) and outer juxtamedullary (JMC) cortices of juvenile animals. Western blot analysis revealed a 2- and 1.8-fold higher amount of NaPi-2 protein in the SC and JMC, respectively, in juvenile rats. Immunofluorescence microscopy also indicated that NaPi-2 protein expression was present in the proximal tubule (PT) BBM to a greater extent in juvenile rats. Dietary P(i) restriction in juvenile rats resulted in a significant increase in P(i) reabsorption in the PCT and PST segments. NaPi-2 expression in the PT BBM was also increased, as was the expression of intracellular NaPi-2 protein. These studies indicate that P(i) reabsorption in both the PCT and PST segments of the renal tubule contributes to the attenuated response to PTH in the normal juvenile animal. In addition, dietary P(i) restriction in the juvenile rat upregulates BBM NaPi-2 expression, which is associated with a further increase in proximal tubular P(i) reabsorption.

Detailed experiments were conducted to test the behaviour of the ESR signal at the g-value of 2.0057 in corals after irradiation and heating. On the basis of the results an analytical model for this signal was developed. We assume the existence of a precursor to the SO2- radical. On irradiation traps are produced, some in the precursor state and some in the radical state. Heating then causes transfer of electrons into the precursor state, from the precursor state into the radical state and out of the radical state into a base state. On the base of this model, we suggest that the signal at g = 2.0057 can be applied for dating. Our first dating attempts on corals delivered promising results for the suggested procedure.

BACKGROUND: It is known that compensatory renal growth (CRG) following unilateral nephrectomy (UNX) increases both the size of the kidney and its functional capacity; however, few studies have investigated whether differences in CRG exist between the sexes. Our study examined the sex-related differences in remnant kidney growth and function two months following UNX. METHODS: Adult male and female Wistar rats underwent either left UNX or sham operation and recovered for 8 to 10 weeks. Another group of female rats underwent ovariectomy (Ox), with vehicle, estrogen, or testosterone replacement: two-weeks postsurgery animals underwent UNX and recovered for 8 to 10 weeks. Metabolic studies, acute renal function studies [response to acute saline volume expansion (2 to 4% of body wt) or phosphate (Pi) infusions in thyroparathyroidectomized rats (to determine the transport maximum (TmPi)], and renal morphology were assessed at the end of the experimental period. RESULTS: Two months post-UNX, male remnant kidneys grew 114+/-7% of their excised kidney weight (KW), whereas female remnant kidneys grew only 57+/-4% (P<0.05). There was a significant increase in the glomerular volume of male remnant kidneys (126.2+/-13.4%, P<0.001) compared with control kidney volume, whereas there was no change in glomerular volume in female remnant kidneys (20.2+/-16.1%, P = NS). There was also glomerular and tubular damage in the male remnant kidneys, whereas female remnant kidneys were intact. Studies in Ox female rats supplemented with gonadal steroids determined that testosterone is the driving force for the enhanced remnant kidney growth and glomerular hypertrophy. Renal function studies determined that UNX males had significantly higher glomerular filtration rates (GFRs) than UNX females, although the GFR/single KW was not different between the sexes, indicating a proportional increase in GFR. Basal urinary sodium excretion and urine flow rates were significantly higher in anesthetized UNX rats than their sham-operated controls, and urinary sodium excretion and urine flow rates in UNX males were significantly higher than in UNX females. Both male and female UNX rats responded to volume expansion with an exaggerated initial sodium and urine excretion compared with their controls. Phosphate handling was not altered in UNX male rats; however, UNX female rats had increases in fractional Pi excretion that were associated with significant reductions in the maximum capacity for Pi reabsorption (2.10+/-0.07 vs. 3.43+/-0.24 micromol/ml GFR in female controls, P<0.0001). This difference was also observed in Ox rats treated with estrogen and testosterone (2.31+/-0.07 vs. 3.12+/-0.11 micromol/ml GFR, P<0.0007). CONCLUSIONS: These findings indicate that sexual dimorphism exists in remnant kidney growth and function two months following UNX. Indeed, morphological abnormalities and impairment in renal phosphate handling are affected by gonadal steroids by two-months post-UNX. The fact that renal Pi transport was reduced in female but not male UNX rats may also have important implications during periods of high metabolic demand for phosphate in the female.

This study examined whether dietary phosphate (Pi) restriction stimulates an appetite for Pi in the juvenile rat, which normally has a high metabolic Pi demand for growth. Juvenile Wistar rats were placed in individual cages with unrestricted access to tap water and a low (LPD, 0.02% Pi) or normal Pi diet (NPD, 0.6% Pi) for 7 days. On day 8, both groups of rats were given unlimited access to a solution of 0.3 M potassium phosphate water (PiH2O) for 8 additional days. Rats fed LPD consumed 70-100% more PiH2O then those rats fed NPD (P < 0.001). The increase in PiH2O intake resulted in a marked rise in the growth rate of rats fed LPD during days 8-15. A similar Pi intake was inducible after only 2 days of LPD and was associated with significant reductions in both plasma and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) Pi levels; these levels remained low throughout Pi restriction, despite a significant PiH2O intake. Furthermore, the renal adaptation to enhance Pi reabsorption (TmPi) during Pi deprivation remained elevated despite enhanced PiH2O intake. Replenishment with a high-Pi diet rapidly quenched the PiH2O appetite and was associated with restoration of both plasma and CSF Pi levels. These findings suggest that an appetite for Pi can be induced in juvenile rats, perhaps through lowered plasma and CSF Pi levels. This behavioral response may serve as an additional mechanism to maintain an adequate supply of Pi necessary for growth and development of the animal.
