RESUMO

A stable anode-free lithium metal battery (AFLMB) is accomplished by the adoption of a facile fabricated amorphous antimony (Sb)-coated separator (SbSC). The large specific surface area of the separator elevates lithium (Li)-Sb alloy kinetic, improving Li wetting ability on pristine copper current collector (Cu). When tested with LiNi0.8 Mn0.1 Co0.1 O2 (NMC811) as cathode, the full cell with SbSC demonstrates low nucleation overpotential with compact, dendrite-free and homogeneous Li plating, and exhibits a notable lithium inventory retention rate (LIRR) of 99.8 % with capacity retention of 93.6 % after 60 cycles at 0.5 C-rate. Conversely, full cells containing pristine separator/Cu (i. e., SC) and pristine separator/Sb-coated current collector (i. e., SSbC) display poor cycling performances with low LIRRs. Density functional theory corroborates the nucleation behaviours observed during in-situ half-cell Li deposition. Functionalizing polymeric separator by metallic coating in AFLMB is a novel approach in improving the cycle life of an AFLMB by promoting homogeneous Li plating behavior. This innovative approach exemplifies a promising applicability for uniform Li-plating behavior to achieve a longer cycle life in AFLMB.

A partially neutralized polyacrylic acid (Pn-PAA) is used for coating sub-micron-sized α-alumina on a conventional microporous polyolefin separator, fabricating a ceramic-coated separator (CCS). Pn-PAA acts as a dispersant and binder by adsorbing itself on alpha(α)-alumina surfaces under acidic condition through the columbic interaction, providing a repulsive force to disperse fine alumina in aqueous suspension, and binds alumina strongly on plasma-treated separator through hydrogen bonding. This CCS shows favorable wettability in carbonate-based liquid electrolyte and ionic conduction due to the high hydrophilicity of Pn-PAA and alumina. With that, this study found that Pn-PAA-made-CCS yields a substantial adhesion strength of ~106 N/m with enhanced cycle stability, a specific capacity of 145.0 mAh/g after 200 cycles at 1 C at room temperature in half cells (LFP/Li metal).

COVID-19 disease and anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis are both multi-systemic conditions. It is postulated there is a causal relationship between both conditions and this is supported by some case reports. The symptoms of COVID-19 can mimic those of vasculitis especially when the respiratory system is affected. Early diagnosis and treatment of ANCA-vasculitis cannot be overemphasized as this reduces the risk of severe organ damage. We report a 64-year-old lady with SARS-CoV-2 infection who developed ANCA-vasculitis with acute kidney injury and we reviewed the literature on this plausible association. We performed an electronic search of the MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, and EMCARE databases for research studies and case series and reports published in the English language between April 2020 and February 2022. Our review suggests that patients with COVID-19 infection who had proteinase 3-ANCA positive vasculitis with diffuse alveolar haemorrhage had fatal outcomes. We also noticed an increased incidence of active urine sediments. We emphasize the importance of a high index of suspicion for diagnosis and early treatment of vasculitis to ensure an improved outcome.

RESUMO

Global analysis of the susceptibility of influenza viruses to neuraminidase (NA) inhibitors (NAIs) and the polymerase acidic (PA) inhibitor (PAI) baloxavir was conducted by five World Health Organization Collaborating Centres for Reference and Research on Influenza during two periods (May 2018-May 2019 and May 2019-May 2020). Combined phenotypic and NA sequence-based analysis revealed that the global frequency of viruses displaying reduced or highly reduced inhibition (RI or HRI) or potential to show RI/HRI by NAIs remained low, 0.5% (165/35045) and 0.6% (159/26010) for the 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 periods, respectively. The most common amino acid substitution was NA-H275Y (N1 numbering) conferring HRI by oseltamivir and peramivir in A(H1N1)pdm09 viruses. Combined phenotypic and PA sequence-based analysis showed that the global frequency of viruses showing reduced susceptibility to baloxavir or carrying substitutions associated with reduced susceptibility was low, 0.5% (72/15906) and 0.1% (18/15692) for the 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 periods, respectively. Most (n = 61) of these viruses had I38→T/F/M/S/L/V PA amino acid substitutions. In Japan, where baloxavir use was highest, the rate was 4.5% (41/919) in the 2018-2019 period and most of the viruses (n = 32) had PA-I38T. Zoonotic viruses isolated from humans (n = 32) in different countries did not contain substitutions in NA associated with NAI RI/HRI phenotypes. One A(H5N6) virus had a dual substitution PA-I38V + PA-E199G, which may reduce susceptibility to baloxavir. Therefore, NAIs and baloxavir remain appropriate choices for the treatment of influenza virus infections, but close monitoring of antiviral susceptibility is warranted.

Convective precipitation-localized, short-lived, intense, and sometimes violent-is at the root of challenges associated with observation, simulation, and prediction of precipitation. The understanding of long-term changes in convective precipitation characteristics and their role in precipitation extremes and intensity over extratropical regions are imperative to future water resource management; however, they have been studied very little. We show that annual convective precipitation total has been increasing astonishingly fast, at a rate of 18.4%/°C, of which 16% is attributable to an increase in convective precipitation occurrence, and 2.4% is attributable to increased daily intensity based on the 35 years of two (combined) historical data sets of 3-hourly synoptic observations and daily precipitation. We also reveal that annual daily precipitation extreme has been increasing at a rate of about 7.4%/°C in convective events only. Concurrently, the overall increase in mean daily precipitation intensity is mostly due to increased convective precipitation, possibly at the expanse of nonconvective precipitation. As a result, transitional seasons are becoming more summer-like as convective becomes the dominant precipitation type that has accompanied higher daily extremes and intensity since the late 1980s. The data also demonstrate that increasing convective precipitation and daily extremes appear to be directly linearly associated with higher atmospheric water vapor accompanying a warming climate over northern Eurasia.

An atmospheric-water-budget-related phase space is constructed with the tendency terms related to dynamical convergence (QCON ≡ -Q∇ · V) and moisture advection (QADV ≡ -V · ∇Q) in the water budget equation. Over the tropical oceans, QCON accounts for large-scale dynamical conditions related to conditional instability, and QADV accounts for conditions related to lower-tropospheric moisture gradient. Two reanalysis products [MERRA and ERA-Interim (ERAi)] are used to calculate QCON and QADV. Using the phase space as a reference frame, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) cloud-top pressure (CTP) and cloud optical depth (COD) are used to evaluate simulated clouds in the GISS-E2 general circulation model. In regimes of divergence over the tropical oceans, moist advection yields frequent high- to midlevel medium-thickness to thick clouds associated with moderate stratiform precipitation, while dry advection yields low-level thin clouds associated with shallow convection with lowered cloud tops. In regimes with convergence, moist and dry advection modulate the relative abundance of high-level thick clouds and low-level thin to medium-thickness clouds. GISS-E2 qualitatively reproduces the cloud property dependence on moisture budget tendencies in regimes of convergence but with larger COD compared to MODIS. Low-level thick clouds in GISS-E2 are the most frequent in regimes of near-zero convergence and moist advection instead of those of large-scale divergence. Compared to the Global Precipitation Climatology Project product, MERRA, ERAi, and GISS-E2 have more rain in regimes with deep convection and less rain in regimes with shallow convection.

Emergence of influenza viruses with reduced susceptibility to neuraminidase inhibitors (NAIs) is sporadic, often follows exposure to NAIs, but occasionally occurs in the absence of NAI pressure. The emergence and global spread in 2007/2008 of A(H1N1) influenza viruses showing clinical resistance to oseltamivir due to neuraminidase (NA) H275Y substitution, in the absence of drug pressure, warrants continued vigilance and monitoring for similar viruses. Four World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Centres for Reference and Research on Influenza and one WHO Collaborating Centre for the Surveillance, Epidemiology and Control of Influenza (WHO CCs) tested 11,387 viruses collected by WHO-recognized National Influenza Centres (NIC) between May 2012 and May 2013 to determine 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) data for oseltamivir, zanamivir, peramivir and laninamivir. The data were evaluated using normalized IC50 fold-changes rather than raw IC50 data. Nearly 90% of the 11,387 viruses were from three WHO regions: Western Pacific, the Americas and Europe. Only 0.2% (n=27) showed highly reduced inhibition (HRI) against at least one of the four NAIs, usually oseltamivir, while 0.3% (n=39) showed reduced inhibition (RI). NA sequence data, available from the WHO CCs and from sequence databases (n=3661), were screened for amino acid substitutions associated with reduced NAI susceptibility. Those showing HRI were A(H1N1)pdm09 with NA H275Y (n=18), A(H3N2) with NA E119V (n=3) or NA R292K (n=1) and B/Victoria-lineage with NA H273Y (n=2); amino acid position numbering is A subtype and B type specific. Overall, approximately 99% of circulating viruses tested during the 2012-2013 period were sensitive to all four NAIs. Consequently, these drugs remain an appropriate choice for the treatment and prophylaxis of influenza virus infections.

Retrovirus-mediated gene transfer offers the potential for stable long-term expression of transduced genes in host cells subsequent to integration of vector DNA into the host genome. Using a murine amphotropic retrovirus vector containing an interleukin-2 receptor (IL-2R) gene as a reporter and a neomycin phosphotransferase (neor) gene as a dominant selectable marker, we measured the efficiency of retrovirus-mediated gene transfer and the stability of transduced gene expression in a cystic fibrosis tracheal epithelial cell line (CFT1). The use of the IL-2R cell surface marker as a reporter of infection permitted both quantitation of vector gene expression and flow cytometric sorting of cells transduced with the vector. In initial studies, the optimal conditions for retrovirus-mediated gene transfer were determined. The presence of a polycation was required for optimal transduction efficiency. The efficiency of infection of CFT1 cells was increased by repetitive exposure to virus such that it was possible to transduce approximately 80% of the cells following three successive daily exposures. The long-term stability of expression of the non-selected IL-2R gene was also evaluated. A slow decline in the percentage of cells expressing IL-2R was seen with cells that were maintained under constant selection pressure for expression of the neor gene, which was expressed from an internal promoter. Similar results were obtained when cultures were selected initially for neor gene expression and maintained without selection thereafter. In contrast, stable expression was observed in CFT1 cells for at least one year following multiple infections in the absence of G418 selection. In conclusion, (i) transduction of foreign genes into human airway epithelial cells using an amphotropic retrovirus vector can be highly efficient in the presence of appropriate polycations and multiple exposures; and (ii) stable expression of a non-selected gene in these epithelial cells is better maintained without selection.
