RESUMO

This case study describes the implementation of a wellness center based on the integration of a Navy outpatient physical therapy department and a morale, welfare, and recreation cardiovascular center. The logistics and services provided are discussed. The productivity of the physical therapy department based on the monthly number of patient treatments is assessed. A statistically significant increase in patient visits of 38% above the previous year was noted. The newly established cardiovascular center averaged 1,500 client visits monthly. This unique collaboration appears to hold promise as an effective wellness center concept.

RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of Aviation Officer's Candidate School (AOCS) on the aerobic and anaerobic fitness of the candidates. Thirty candidates were tested prior to and post-AOCS. Anaerobic measures included vertical jump and seated shot-put throw. A 1.5-mile run was used as an aerobic measure. Timed push-ups and sit-ups were used as overall strength and endurance measures. Body fat was assessed by OPNAV 6110.1 standards. Statistically significant increases were achieved in all areas, except for body fat and push-ups, which produced no significant changes.

RESUMO

The medical literature has produced a wide array of descriptive articles concerning paralysis of the serratus anterior; however, there has been no work on the role of sports in producing this condition. The functional anatomy, pathophysiology, and clinical evaluation are presented. A case study demonstrates the symptoms and progression of a typical patient with paralysis of the serratus anterior.
