RESUMO

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a neuromuscular disease characterized by a progressive skeletal muscular weakness. As the respiratory care of such patients has been dramatically improved during the past few years, the DMD associated cardiomyopathy is becoming a new concern. We report a clinical case of a Troponin I level increase with normal coronarography occurring after an acute episode of respiratory failure. This report suggests the sensitivity of cardiomyocytes to hypoxemia in DMD patients.

RESUMO

The study was undertaken to determine the aetiology and prevalence of mastitis in hand-milked cows (n = 186) in two major Ethiopian dairies. The California Mastitis Test and culturing for bacteria revealed that 21.5% of the cows were clinically infected and 38.2% had subclinical mastitis. Most mastitis pathogens isolated from milk samples testing positive by the California Mastitis Test were Gram-positive cocci. Staphylococci constituted 57% of the isolates, of which the predominant cause of bovine mastitis was Staphylococcus aureus (40.5%). Other mastitis pathogens isolated include streptococci (16.5%), coliforms (9%) and corynebacteria (5%). Retrospective analysis of farm records indicated that mastitis was the second most important cause of culling and accounted for 27% of the cows removed from these two dairies.

RESUMO

Two patients with severe hepatic and renal failure underwent emergency hepatic retransplantation (2nd and 6th day after transplantation). Continuous arteriovenous haemodialysis was begun before surgery and successfully performed, without any incident, during the retransplantation with a biospal (SCU/CAVH AN 69 S) device, without pump. Vascular access was obtained with femoral catheters. Such a continuous dialysis and ultrafiltration allowed us to infuse massive amounts of blood products before and during surgery and to maintain pH, potassium and lactate at levels compatible with survival in anuric patients. Standard haemodialysis replaced CAVHD when haemodynamic stability was restored.
