RESUMO

Textile-based sweat sensors display great potential to enhance wearable comfort and health monitoring; however, their widespread application is severely hindered by the intricate manufacturing process and electrochemical characteristics. To address this challenge, we combined both impregnation coating technology and conjugated electrospinning technology to develop an electro-assisted impregnation core-spinning technology (EAICST), which enables us to simply construct a sheath-core electrochemical sensing yarn (TPFV/CPP yarn) via coating PEDOT:PSS-coated carbon fibers (CPP) with polyurethane (TPU)/polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/poloxamer (F127)/valinomycin as shell. The TPFV/CPP yarn was sewn into the fabric and integrated with a sensor to achieve a detachable feature and efficiently monitor K+ levels in sweat. By introducing EAICST, a speed of 10 m/h can be realized in the continuous preparation of the TPFV/CPP yarn, while the interconnected pores in the yarn sheath enable it to quickly capture and diffuse sweat. Besides, the sensor exhibited excellent sensitivity (54.26 mV/decade), fast response (1.7 s), anti-interference, and long-term stability (5000 s or more). Especially, it also possesses favorable washability and wear resistance properties. Taken together, this study provides a crucial technical foundation for the development of advanced wearable devices designed for sweat analysis.

RESUMO

Oral lichen planus (OLP) is one of the most common chronic diseases; however, its etiology remains unknown. More and more studies have revealed that emotional instability is one of the risk factors for the onset and expansion of OLP, especially in patients suffering from depression, anxiety disorder, and acute stress. In this case report, we had a 32-year-old female OLP patient who had no obvious response to conventional OLP drugs. Then we switched to a combination of psychotropic drugs and psychotherapies. By regulating mood through drugs and psychological counseling, the patient's oral disease was alleviated. Our case shows that clinicians should consider the mental problems of OLP patients. It also emphasizes the importance of medications and psychological counseling in the treatment of somatic diseases.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to investigate the epidemiological characteristics and profile of drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) among children with TB in Sichuan province of China. From January 2015 to December 2018, microbiological culture-confirmed child TB cases (aged <15 years old) were enrolled retrospectively. Epidemiological and clinical information from these cases, and the drug susceptibility testing results of the isolates were collected and analyzed.Of 317 culture-confirmed child TB cases, 16.7% (53/317) were aged under 5 years old. 54.9% were Tibetans, and 31.9% had clear history of contact with TB patients. More than half (53.9%) were not vaccinated by Calmette-Guérin bacillus (BCG). Thirty percent (n = 95) were diagnosed as severe TB, and 92.4% (n = 293) were new cases. The ratio of severe TB in BCG vaccinated group was significant lower than that observed in unvaccinated group (P < .01). Significantly higher proportion of severe TB among Tibetans than Han child TB cases was observed in BCG unvaccinated group (P < .01). The overall rate of DR-TB in this study was 24.3% (77/317) and 17 multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) cases were identified with rate of MDR-TB at 5.4% (17/317). No extensively drug-resistant case was found. Thirteen out of 17 MDR-TB cases (76.4%) were Tibetan children. The ratio of any resistance to 4 first-line drugs identified were: isoniazid (INH), 15.5%; rifampicin (RIF), 9.1%; ethambutol, 0.6% and streptomycin, 6.0%, respectively. More than half of MDR patterns were resistant to INH + RIF (9/17), followed by at least resistance to INH + RIF + streptomycin (n = 7).This was the first investigation on the epidemiological characteristics and profiles of DR-TB among child TB cases in Southwest of China. Our findings indicated a potentially high risk of TB infection to Tibetan children in the concentrated Tibetan communities of Sichuan.

RESUMO

Many municipal wastewater treatment plants in China receive industrial wastewater that contains inhibitory organic chemicals, such as chlorinated phenols. For the common aerobic biological treatment, nitrification is a key step, but nitrifying bacteria are notably sensitive to inhibition by chlorinated phenols. In this work, normal activated sludge (containing nitrifying biomass) was acclimated to 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (TCP). The acclimated biomass had more than 2-fold faster nitrification kinetics than normal biomass when exposed to TCP, and it also achieved effective TCP removal in parallel. When suddenly exposed to TCP after as much as two months without TCP input, the acclimated nitrifying biomass retained effective nitrification and TCP biodegradation: The nitrification rate and TCP removal rate were 0.325 mM/h and 0.049 mM/h for the acclimated biomass, compared to only 0.165 mM/h and 0.001 mM/h for normal biomass. Resistance to TCP inhibition also was retained for 5 generations of sub-culturing without TCP exposure. High-throughput sequencing confirmed that the acclimated biomass contained nitrifying bacteria and heterotrophic bacteria capable of degrading TCP, although the key genera changed during sub-culturing.

RESUMO

It is common that biological wastewater-treatment processes are exposed to inputs of toxic compounds, such as phenolics. Due to their slow growth rate, nitrifying bacteria are most susceptible to inhibition that can lead to loss of nitrification capacity. Here, a microbial community containing nitrifying bacteria was acclimated to phenol, and it developed resistance to phenol inhibition and maintained nitrification activity. For the phenol-acclimated biomass, the NH4+-N removal rates were almost unaffected when it was suddenly exposed to phenol. Heterotrophic synthesis and nitrification rates contributed 76% and 24% of the total NH4+-N removal respectively during phenol removal, but the nitrification rate increased significantly once phenol was removed and mineralized. In contrast, the NH4+-N removal rates decreased sharply for normal (unacclimated) nitrifying biomass when it was exposed to phenol. The phenol-acclimated biomass retained its resistance to phenol inhibition for at least two months after acclimation, and addition of the phenol-acclimated biomass to the normal biomass conferred resistance to phenol inhibition. Community analysis of the phenol-acclimated biomass showed an increase in families known to contain strains able to biodegrade phenolics. Taken together, the results indicate that the main impact of phenol acclimation was enrichment of phenol-biodegrading bacteria, which allowed rapid removal and mineralization of phenol and, consequently, alleviation of phenol's inhibition of nitrification.

RESUMO

Here we show the design of a photoregulated split aptaswitch (PSA) for the challenging small-molecule biorecognition and its sensing application. The PSA specifically binds with the target in a binary reaction, and can easily rule out false positive signals by azobenzene photoisomerization, exhibiting an approximately 50-fold improved sensitivity over a control assay.

RESUMO

In this study, the feasibility of application of anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) to teat wastewater containing chromium was assessed. Anammox granule activity decreased with increasing Cr(VI) concentration and pre-exposure time in batch tests, and the 50% inhibition concentration of Cr(VI) on anammox biomass was 296.5 mg L-1. Approximately 93.9% chromium was absorbed by loosely bound-extracellular polymeric substances and tightly bound-extracellular polymeric substances when less than 60 mg L-1 Cr(VI) was added. During long-term operation in up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor, significant inhibitory effects anammox performance were observed for Cr(VI) concentrations up to 2 mg L-1. The nitrogen removal rate (NRR) rapidly decreased to 1.49 ±â€¯0.89 kg N m-3 d-1, whereas the NRR was 11.37 ±â€¯1.30 kg N m-3 d-1 in a control reactor. Compared with initial levels, specific anammox granule activity was 22%. The tolerance of the anammox process to Cr(VI) can be enhanced after a long-term adaptive phase.
