RESUMO

Limited electrochemical stability windows of conventional carbonate-based electrolytes pose a challenge to support the Lithium (Li)- and manganese (Mn)-rich (LMR) high-voltage cathodes in rechargeable Li-metal batteries (LMBs). To address this issue, a novel localized high-concentration electrolyte (LHCE) composition incorporating LiPF6 and LiTFSI as dual-salts (D-LHCE), tailored for high-voltage (>4.6 Vvs.Li) operation of LMR cathodes in LMBs is introduced. 7Li nuclear magnetic resonance and Raman spectroscopy revealed the characteristics of the solvation structure of D-LHCE. The addition of LiPF6 provides stable Al-current-collector passivation while the addition of LiTFSI improves the stability of D-LHCE by producing a more robust cathode-electrolyte interphase (CEI) on LMR cathode and solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) on Li-metal anode. As a result, LMR/Li cell, using the D-LHCE, achieved 72.5% capacity retention after 300 cycles, a significant improvement compared to the conventional electrolyte (21.9% after 100 cycles). The stabilities of LMR CEI and Li-metal SEI are systematically analyzed through combined applications of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and distribution of relaxation times techniques. The results present that D-LHCE concept represents an effective strategy for designing next-generation electrolytes for high-energy and high-voltage LMB cells.

Solid-state sodium metal batteries have been extensively investigated because of their potential to improve safety, cost-effectiveness, and energy density. The development of such batteries urgently required a solid-state electrolyte with fast Na-ion conduction and favorable interfacial compatibility. Herein, the progress on developing the NaB3H8 solid-state electrolytes is reported, which show a liquid-like ionic conductivity of 0.05 S cm-1 at 56 °C with an activation energy of 0.35 eV after an order-disorder phase transformation, matching or surpassing the best single-anion hydridoborate conductors investigated up to now. The steady polarization voltage and significantly decreased resistance are achieved in the symmetric Na/NaB3H8/Na cell, indicating the great electrochemical stability and favorable interfacial contact with the Na metal of NaB3H8. Furthermore, a Na/NaB3H8/TiS2 battery, the first high-rate (up to 1 C) solid-state sodium metal battery using the single-anion hydridoborate electrolyte, is demonstrated, which exhibits superior rate capability (168.2 mAh g-1 at 0.1 C and 141.2 mAh g-1 at 1 C) and long-term cycling stability (70.9% capacity retention at 1 C after 300 cycles) at 30 °C. This work may present a new possibility to solve the interfacial limitations and find a new group of solid-state electrolytes for high-performance sodium metal batteries.

M2-like macrophages exhibit immunosuppressive activity and promote pancreatic cancer progression. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) affect macrophage polarization; however, the mechanism remains unclear. This study aimed to elucidate the underlying molecular basis and design a gene therapy to inhibit M2-like polarization. Microarray analysis and IF staining were performed in M1-like and M2-like macrophages to ascertain the expression of CYBB, a major intracellular ROS source. Co-culture assay and syngeneic orthotopic pancreatic cancer mouse models were used to study the mechanism of M2-like skewing. Decoy oligodeoxynucleotides (ODNs) were designed to manipulate CYBB transcription to inhibit M2-like polarization and control tumor growth. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) treatment polarized U937 cells to M1-like macrophages in which CYBB expression was increased. In contrast, co-culture with PANC-1 cells induced M2-like polarization in U937 cells with CYBB downregulation. High CD204 M2-like expression in combination with low CYBB expression was associated with the worst prognosis in pancreatic cancer patients. STAT6 and HDAC2 in U937 cells were activated by cancer cell-derived IL-4 after coculture and then bound to the CYBB promoter to repress CYBB expression, resulting in M2-like polarization. DPI that inhibits ROS production could block this action. Knockdown of STAT6 and HDAC2 also inhibited M2-like polarization and maintained the M1-like phenotype of U937 cells after coculture. Decoy ODNs interrupting the binding of STAT6 to the CYBB promoter counteracted M2-like polarization and tumor growth and triggered antitumor immunity in vivo. Gene therapy using STAT6-CYBB decoy ODNs can inhibit M2-like polarization, representing a potential therapeutic tool for pancreatic cancer.

The realization and discovery of quantum spin liquid (QSL) candidate materials are crucial for exploring exotic quantum phenomena and applications associated with QSLs. Most existing metal-organic two-dimensional (2D) quantum spin liquid candidates have structures with spins arranged on the triangular or kagome lattices, whereas honeycomb-structured metal-organic compounds with QSL characteristics are rare. Here, we report the use of 2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone (X2dhbq, X = Cl, Br, H) as the linkers to construct cobalt(II) honeycomb lattices (NEt4)2[Co2(X2dhbq)3] as promising Kitaev-type QSL candidate materials. The high-spin d7 Co2+ has pseudospin-1/2 ground-state doublets, and benzoquinone-based linkers not only provide two separate superexchange pathways that create bond-dependent frustrated interactions but also allow for chemical tunability to mediate magnetic coupling. Our magnetization data show antiferromagnetic interactions between neighboring metal centers with Weiss constants from -5.1 to -8.5 K depending on the X functional group in X2dhbq linkers (X = Cl, Br, H). No magnetic transition or spin freezing could be observed down to 2 K. Low-temperature susceptibility (down to 0.3 K) and specific heat (down to 0.055 K) of (NEt4)2[Co2(H2dhbq)3] were further analyzed. Heat capacity measurements confirmed no long-range order down to 0.055 K, evidenced by the broad peak instead of the λ-like anomaly. Our results indicate that these 2D cobalt benzoquinone frameworks are promising Kitaev QSL candidates with chemical tunability through ligands that can vary the magnetic coupling and frustration.

High sperm cryotolerance is crucial to the successful cryopreservation of boar sperm. Evaluating the cryotolerance of boar sperm by using a rapid and convenient technique can enhance the commercial viability of these sperm. This study investigated the correlation between sperm parameters for three sample subsets-fresh sperm, sperm with H2O2-induced oxidative damage (hereinafter referred to as H2O2-induced sperm), and frozen-thawed sperm-to identify the potential of these correlations to predict cryotolerance. A total of 64 sperm samples were obtained from 64 Duroc boars. The sperm parameters of the three subsets, where the frozen-thawed sperm were analysed at 30 or 180 min after thawing, were determined, and the coefficients of correlation between these parameters were calculated. The results indicated that H2O2-induced oxidative stress resulted in decreases in various sperm parameters-including total motility (TM), viability (VIA), mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), and live sperm with MMP (LMP)-but increased their coefficients of variation. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis revealed that the kinematic parameters of the H2O2-induced sperm effectively predicted those of the frozen-thawed boar sperm at 30 min after thawing; the corresponding area under the ROC curve (AUC) was 0.8667 for TM and 0.8733 for progressive motility in the H2O2-induced sperm. For measurement at 180 min after thawing, the sperm membrane and mitochondrial parameters of the H2O2-induced sperm effectively predicted the LMP of the frozen-thawed boar sperm; the corresponding AUC was 0.8489 for VIA, 0.8289 for MMP, and 0.8444 for LMP. To our knowledge, this is the first study to directly establish a strong correlation between post-thaw boar sperm quality and H2O2-induced oxidative stress before freezing. Our proposed technique can serve as a valuable reference for the development of practical applications aimed at enhancing techniques for cryopreserving boar sperm.

Clustered ring enhancement (CRE) is a new lexicon for non-mass enhancement (NME) of breast MR in the 5th BIRADS, indicating a high suspicion of malignancy. We wonder if the presence of CRE correlates with expression of prognostic molecular biomarkers of breast cancer. A total of 58 breast lesions, which MRI reported with NME, were collected between July 2013 and December 2018. The patterns of enhancement including CRE were reviewed and the pathological results with expression of molecular biomarkers were collected. The association between MRI NME, pathological, and IHC stain findings were investigated under univariate analysis. A total of 58 breast lesions were pathologically proven to have breast cancer, comprising 31 lesions with CRE and 27 lesions without CRE on breast MRI. The expression of the estrogen receptor (ER) (p = 0.017) and the progesterone receptor (PR) (p = 0.017) was significantly lower in lesions with CRE as compared with those without CRE. The expression of Ki-67 (≥25%) was significantly higher in lesions with CRE (p = 0.046). The lesions with CRE had a lower expression ratio of ER (50.71 ± 45.39% vs. 74.26 ± 33.59%, p = 0.028). Our study indicated that lesions with CRE may possess different features from those without CRE in molecular expression, bearing a more aggressive behavior.

BACKGROUND: Cytomegalovirus (CMV) can cause infection and critical diseases in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) recipients. This study aimed to explore the cumulative incidence and risk factors for CMV infection and disease among HSCT recipients in Taiwan. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study using the Taiwan Blood and Marrow Transplantation Registry (TBMTR) included HSCT recipients between 2009 and 2018 in Taiwan. The primary outcome was cumulative incidence of CMV infection or disease at day 100 after HSCT. Secondary outcomes included day 180 cumulative incidence of CMV infection or disease, infection sites, risk factors for CMV infection or disease, survival analysis, and overall survival after CMV infection and disease. RESULTS: There were 4394 HSCT recipients included in the study (2044 auto-HSCT and 2350 allo-HSCT). The cumulative incidence of CMV infection and disease was significantly higher in allo-HSCT than in auto-HSCT patients at day 100 (53.7% vs. 6.0%, P < 0.0001 and 6.1% vs. 0.9%, P < 0.0001). Use of ATG (HR 1.819, p < 0.0001), recipient CMV serostatus positive (HR 2.631, p < 0.0001) and acute GVHD grades ≥ II (HR 1.563, p < 0.0001) were risk factors for CMV infection, while matched donor (HR 0.856, p = 0.0180) and myeloablative conditioning (MAC) (HR 0.674, p < 0.0001) were protective factors. CONCLUSION: The study revealed a significant disparity in terms of the incidence, risk factors, and clinical outcomes of CMV infection and disease between auto and allo-HSCT patients. These findings underscore the importance of considering these factors in the management of HSCT recipients to improve outcomes related to CMV infections.

Chiral organic-inorganic metal halides (OIMHs) are attractive for their potential applications in chiral optoelectronics and spintronics, such as circular polarized light emitters, detectors, and chiral-induced spin selectivity. Here, we report three pairs of chiral OIMHs with great water stability constructed from chiral viologens. These OIMHs contain either 1D or 0D structures, however, with small band gaps around 2 eV. Circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy on transparent thin films of two OIMH pairs showed a wide CD response covering most of the visible light range. Although the chiral center is not directly attached to the pyridinium in these chiral viologens, the chirality is still successfully transferred into both the band gap and the exciton absorption ranges. Liquid and solid CD studies of the chiral viologens further indicate that the chiral induction inside these OIMHs is possibly through chiral crystallization. This work demonstrated the design strategy of water-stable, small band gap chiral OIMHs through chiral viologens. These low-dimensional chiral materials may provide an interesting system to investigate chiral induction, and their broad CD response may enable their potential application as circular photodetectors with a wide detection range.

The objective of this study was to systematically elucidate the effects of conventional (Cold Pressing, CP; Hot Pressing, HP; Soxhlet Extraction; SE) and novel methods (Microwave-Assisted Extraction, MAE) on the physicochemical properties, bio-active substances, flavor and lipidomics of Camellia oleifera oil (COO). The cold-pressed COO contained the highest contents of squalene (176.38 mg/kg), α-tocopherol (330.52 mg/kg), polyphenols (68.33 mg/kg) and phytosterols (2782.55 mg/kg). Oleic acid was observed as the predominant fatty acid with the content of approximately 80%. HS-GC-IMS identified 47 volatile compounds, including 11 aldehydes, 11 ketones, 11 alcohols, 2 acids, 8 esters, 2 pyrazines, 1 furan, and 1 thiophene. A total of 5 lipid classes and 30 lipid subclasses of 339 lipids were identifed, among which TGs and DGs were observed as the major lipids. In summary, both cold-pressed and microwave-assisted technologies provided high-quality COO with high content of bio-active substances and diglycerides/triglycerides.

RESUMO

In response to societal developments and the growing demand for high-energy-density battery systems, alkali metal batteries (AMBs) have emerged as promising candidates for next-generation energy storage. Despite their high theoretical specific capacity and output voltage, AMBs face critical challenges related to high reactivity with electrolytes and unstable interphases. This review, from the perspective of electrolytes, analyzes AMB failure mechanisms, including interfacial side reactions, active materials loss, and metal dendrite growth. It then reviews recent advances in innovative electrolyte molecular designs, such as ether, ester, sulfone, sulfonamide, phosphate, and salt, aimed at overcoming the above-mentioned challenges. Finally, we propose the current molecular design principles and future promising directions that can help future precise electrolyte molecular design.

All-solid-state sodium metal batteries are promising for large-scale energy storage applications owing to their intrinsic safety and cost-effectiveness. However, they generally suffer from sodium dendrite growth or rapid capacity fading, especially at high rates, mainly due to poor wettability, sluggish ionic transport, or low interfacial stability of the solid electrolytes. Herein, we report a novel composite, NaB3H8 ⋅ xNH3@NaB3H8 (x<1), as a new class of solid electrolyte for high-rate batteries. NaB3H8 ⋅ xNH3@NaB3H8 is obtained from the sticky NaB3H8 ⋅ NH3 after removal of NH3 partially at room temperature. It delivers an ionic conductivity of 0.84 mS cm-1 at 25 °C and reaches 20.64 mS cm-1 at 45 °C after an order-disorder phase transformation. It also reveals a good capability of dendrite suppression and remarkable stability against sodium metal. These performances enable the all-solid-state Na//TiS2 battery with a high capacity of 232.4 mAh g-1 (97.2 % of theoretical capacity) and long-term cycling stability at 1 C. Notably, this battery shows superior long-life cycling stability even at 5 and 10 C, which has been rarely reported in all-solid-state sodium metal batteries. This work opens a new group of solid electrolytes, contributing to fast-charging or high-power-density sodium metal batteries.

The continuous solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) accumulation has been blamed for the rapid capacity loss of carbon anodes in Na and K ethylene carbonate (EC)/diethyl carbonate (DEC) electrolytes, but the understanding of the SEI composition and its formation chemistry remains incomplete. Here, we explain this SEI accumulation as the continuous production of organic species in solution-phase reactions. By comparing the NMR spectra of SEIs and model compounds we synthesized, alkali metal ethyl carbonate (MEC, M = Na or K), long-chain alkali metal ethylene carbonate (LCMEC, M = Na or K), and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) oligomers with ethyl carbonate ending groups are identified in Na and K SEIs. These components can be continuously generated in a series of solution-phase nucleophilic reactions triggered by ethoxides. Compared with the Li SEI formation chemistry, the enhancement of the nucleophilicity of an intermediate should be the cause of continuous nucleophilic reactions in the Na and K cases.

BACKGROUND: Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) is the most common lymphoproliferative disease in adults and currently remains incurable. As the progression-free period shortens after each successive treatment, strategies such as maintenance therapy are needed to improve the degree and duration of response to previous therapies. Monoclonal antibodies, immunomodulatory agents, and targeted therapies are among the available options for maintenance therapy. People with CLL who achieve remission after previous therapy may choose to undergo medical observation or maintenance therapy to deepen the response. Even though there is widespread use of therapeutic maintenance agents, the benefits and harms of these treatments are still uncertain. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects and safety of maintenance therapy, including anti-CD20 monoclonal antibody, immunomodulatory drug therapy, anti-CD52 monoclonal antibody, Bruton tyrosine kinase inhibitor, and B-cell lymphoma-2 tyrosine kinase inhibitor, for individuals with CLL. SEARCH METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive literature search for randomised controlled trials (RCTs) with no language or publication status restrictions. We searched CENTRAL, MEDLINE, Embase, and three trials registers in January 2022 together with reference checking, citation searching, and contact with study authors to identify additional studies. SELECTION CRITERIA: We included RCTs with prospective identification of participants. We excluded cluster-randomised trials, cross-over trial designs, and non-randomised studies. We included studies comparing maintenance therapies with placebo/observation or head-to-head comparisons. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS: We used standard Cochrane methodological procedures. We assessed risk of bias in the included studies using Cochrane's RoB 1 tool for RCTs. We rated the certainty of evidence for the following outcomes using the GRADE approach: overall survival (OS), health-related quality of life (HRQoL), grade 3 and 4 adverse events (AEs), progression-free survival (PFS), treatment-related mortality (TRM), treatment discontinuation (TD), and all adverse events (AEs). MAIN RESULTS: We identified 11 RCTs (2393 participants) that met the inclusion criteria, including seven trials comparing anti-CD20 monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) (rituximab or ofatumumab) with observation in 1679 participants; three trials comparing immunomodulatory drug (lenalidomide) with placebo/observation in 693 participants; and one trial comparing anti-CD 52 mAbs (alemtuzumab) with observation in 21 participants. No comparisons of novel small molecular inhibitors were found. The median age of participants was 54.1 to 71.7 years; 59.5% were males. The type of previous induction treatment, severity of disease, and baseline stage varied among the studies. Five trials included early-stage symptomatic patients, and three trials included advanced-stage patients (Rai stage III/IV or Binet stage B/C). Six trials reported a frequent occurrence of cytogenic aberrations at baseline (69.7% to 80.1%). The median follow-up duration was 12.4 to 73 months. The risk of selection bias in the included studies was unclear. We assessed overall risk of performance bias and detection bias as low risk for objective outcomes and high risk for subjective outcomes. Overall risk of attrition bias, reporting bias, and other bias was low. Anti-CD20 monoclonal antibodies (mAbs): rituximab or ofatumumab maintenance versus observation Anti-CD20 mAbs maintenance likely results in little to no difference in OS (hazard ratio (HR) 0.94, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.73 to 1.20; 1152 participants; 3 studies; moderate-certainty evidence) and likely increases PFS significantly (HR 0.61, 95% CI 0.50 to 0.73; 1255 participants; 5 studies; moderate-certainty evidence) compared to observation alone. Anti-CD20 mAbs may result in: an increase in grade 3/4 AEs (rate ratio 1.34, 95% CI 1.06 to 1.71; 1284 participants; 5 studies; low-certainty evidence); little to no difference in TRM (risk ratio 0.82, 95% CI 0.39 to 1.71; 1189 participants; 4 studies; low-certainty evidence); a slight reduction to no difference in TD (risk ratio 0.93, 95% CI 0.72 to 1.20; 1321 participants; 6 studies; low-certainty evidence); and an increase in all AEs (rate ratio 1.23, 95% CI 1.03 to 1.47; 1321 participants; 6 studies; low-certainty evidence) compared to the observation group. One RCT reported that there may be no difference in HRQoL between the anti-CD20 mAbs (ofatumumab) maintenance and the observation group (mean difference -1.70, 95% CI -8.59 to 5.19; 480 participants; 1 study; low-certainty evidence). Immunomodulatory drug (IMiD): lenalidomide maintenance versus placebo/observation IMiD maintenance therapy likely results in little to no difference in OS (HR 0.91, 95% CI 0.61 to 1.35; 461 participants; 3 studies; moderate-certainty evidence) and likely results in a large increase in PFS (HR 0.37, 95% CI 0.19 to 0.73; 461 participants; 3 studies; moderate-certainty evidence) compared to placebo/observation. Regarding harms, IMiD maintenance therapy may result in an increase in grade 3/4 AEs (rate ratio 1.82, 95% CI 1.38 to 2.38; 400 participants; 2 studies; low-certainty evidence) and may result in a slight increase in TRM (risk ratio 1.22, 95% CI 0.35 to 4.29; 458 participants; 3 studies; low-certainty evidence) compared to placebo/observation. The evidence for the effect on TD compared to placebo is very uncertain (risk ratio 0.71, 95% CI 0.47 to 1.05; 400 participants; 2 studies; very low-certainty evidence). IMiD maintenance therapy probably increases all AEs slightly (rate ratio 1.41, 95% CI 1.28 to 1.54; 458 participants; 3 studies; moderate-certainty evidence) compared to placebo/observation. No studies assessed HRQoL. Anti-CD52 monoclonal antibodies (mAbs): alemtuzumab maintenance versus observation Maintenance with alemtuzumab may have little to no effect on PFS, but the evidence is very uncertain (HR 0.55, 95% CI 0.32 to 0.95; 21 participants; 1 study; very low-certainty evidence). We did not identify any study reporting the outcomes OS, HRQoL, grade 3/4 AEs, TRM, TD, or all AEs. AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS: There is currently moderate- to very low-certainty evidence available regarding the benefits and harms of maintenance therapy in people with CLL. Anti-CD20 mAbs maintenance improved PFS, but also increased grade 3/4 AEs and all AEs. IMiD maintenance had a large effect on PFS, but also increased grade 3/4 AEs. However, none of the above-mentioned maintenance interventions show differences in OS between the maintenance and control groups. The effects of alemtuzumab maintenance are uncertain, coupled with a warning for drug-related infectious toxicity. A deep understanding of the oxygen (O2) reduction and evolution mechanisms is crucial for understanding metal-O2 batteries. It has become evident that the instability of superoxide in the presence of lithium (Li) ions and sodium (Na) ions is the root cause for the poor reversibility and energy efficiency of Li-O2 and Na-O2 batteries. A straightforward yet elegant method is stabilizing superoxide with the larger potassium (K) ions. Superoxide-based K-O2 batteries, invented by our group in 2013, are operated based on one-electron redox of O2/potassium superoxide (KO2) and have high energy efficiencies without any electrocatalysts. Nevertheless, limiting the anionic redox to O2/superoxide affects the capacity output. Therefore, it is attractive to explore the possibility of beyond KO2 in the K-O2 batteries, especially if the use of catalysts can still be avoided. In this research, solid KO2 was used as the condensed O2 source and pre-dissolved in the dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)-based electrolyte. It is encouraging to observe two sets of reversible peaks during the three-electrode cyclic voltammetry scan under an argon atmosphere. One pair of peaks is attributed to the KO2/potassium peroxide (K2O2) interconversion. Such redox has superb reversibility and a small overpotential of 239 mV in the absence of explicit electrocatalysts. Notably, it is further revealed that K2O2 reacts with gaseous O2. Therefore, a gas-open system with an O2 supply is unfavorable for realizing the reversible KO2/K2O2 redox, and a closed cell system with a KO2 supply as the starting active material is suggested instead.

BACKGROUND: Over the last decade, many studies have assessed the efficacy of treatments for refractory/relapsed multiple myeloma (R/R MM). While combination therapies show greater efficacy than traditional methods, limited research has targeted elderly patients who might be less resilient to treatments. Our study aimed to evaluate treatment efficacy for these elderly patients. METHODS: We carried out a comprehensive review of the literature using a systematic approach. Initially, 4966 citations were retrieved and subsequently narrowed down to 13 eligible randomized controlled trials (RCTs) through our systematic review process from databases like Embase, PubMed, and Cochrane Library from 1 January 2000 to 31 December 2022. Evidence was collated through a frequentist network meta-analysis, using the hazard ratio (HR) for evaluation. RESULTS: Combined therapy of daratumumab, lenalidomide, and dexamethasone (DaraLenDex) was the preferred treatment for R/R MM elderly patients. Its strengths included an HR for progression-free survival (0.15; 95% CI: 0.09-0.25) and a 96% P-score. CONCLUSIONS: Our analysis suggests that, pending more comprehensive RCTs, DaraLenDex is the treatment with the highest efficacy for R/R MM in elderly patients.
