RESUMO

Magnetars are neutron stars with extremely high magnetic fields (≳1014 gauss) that exhibit various X-ray phenomena such as sporadic subsecond bursts, long-term persistent flux enhancements and variable rotation-period derivative1,2. In 2020, a fast radio burst (FRB), akin to cosmological millisecond-duration radio bursts, was detected from the Galactic magnetar SGR 1935+2154 (refs. 3-5), confirming the long-suspected association between some FRBs and magnetars. However, the mechanism for FRB generation in magnetars remains unclear. Here we report the X-ray observation of two glitches in SGR 1935+2154 within a time interval of approximately nine hours, bracketing an FRB that occurred on 14 October 20226,7. Each glitch involved a significant increase in the magnetar's spin frequency, being among the largest abrupt changes in neutron-star rotation8-10 observed so far. Between the glitches, the magnetar exhibited a rapid spin-down phase, accompanied by an increase and subsequent decline in its persistent X-ray emission and burst rate. We postulate that a strong, ephemeral, magnetospheric wind11 provides the torque that rapidly slows the star's rotation. The trigger for the first glitch couples the star's crust to its magnetosphere, enhances the various X-ray signals and spawns the wind that alters magnetospheric conditions that might produce the FRB.

Giant radio pulses (GRPs) are sporadic bursts emitted by some pulsars that last a few microseconds and are hundreds to thousands of times brighter than regular pulses from these sources. The only GRP-associated emission outside of radio wavelengths is from the Crab Pulsar, where optical emission is enhanced by a few percentage points during GRPs. We observed the Crab Pulsar simultaneously at x-ray and radio wavelengths, finding enhancement of the x-ray emission by 3.8 ± 0.7% (a 5.4σ detection) coinciding with GRPs. This implies that the total emitted energy from GRPs is tens to hundreds of times higher than previously known. We discuss the implications for the pulsar emission mechanism and extragalactic fast radio bursts.

PSR J1813-1749 is one of the most energetic rotation-powered pulsars known, producing a pulsar wind nebula (PWN) and gamma-ray and TeV emission, but whose spin period is only measurable in X-ray. We present analysis of two Chandra datasets that are separated by more than ten years and recent NICER data. The long baseline of the Chandra data allows us to derive a pulsar proper motion µ R.A. = - ( 0 . ″ 067 ± 0 . ″ 010 ) yr-1 and µ decl. = - ( 0 . ″ 014 ± 0 . ″ 007 ) yr-1 and velocity v ⊥ ≈ 900-1600 km s-1 (assuming a distance d = 3 - 5 kpc), although we cannot exclude a contribution to the change in measured pulsar position due to a change in brightness structure of the PWN very near the pulsar. We model the PWN and pulsar spectra using an absorbed power law and obtain best-fit absorption N H = (13.1 ± 0.9) × 1022 cm-2, photon index Γ = 1.5 ± 0.1, and 0.3-10 keV luminosity L X ≈ 5.4 × 1034 erg s-1(d/ 5 kpc)2 for the PWN and Γ = 1.2 ± 0.1 and L X « 9.3 × 1033 erg s-1(d/ 5 kpc)2 for PSR J1813-1749. These values do not change between the 2006 and 2016 observations. We use NICER observations from 2019 to obtain a timing model of PSR J1813-1749, with spin frequency ν = 22.35 Hz and spin frequency time derivative v . = ( - 6.428 ± 0.003 ) × 10 - 11 Hz s-1. We also fit ν measurements from 2009-2012 and our 2019 value and find a long-term spin-down rate v . = ( - 6.3445 ± 0.0004 ) × 10 - 11 Hz s-1. We speculate that the difference in spin-down rates is due to glitch activity or emission mode switching.

PSR J0537-6910, also known as the Big Glitcher, is the most prolific glitching pulsar known, and its spin-induced pulsations are only detectable in X-ray. We present results from analysis of 2.7 years of NICER timing observations, from 2017 August to 2020 April. We obtain a rotation phase-connected timing model for the entire timespan, which overlaps with the third observing run of LIGO/Virgo, thus enabling the most sensitive gravitational wave searches of this potentially strong gravitational wave-emitting pulsar. We find that the short-term braking index between glitches decreases towards a value of 7 or lower at longer times since the preceding glitch. By combining NICER and RXTE data, we measure a long-term braking index n = -1.25 ± 0.01. Our analysis reveals 8 new glitches, the first detected since 2011, near the end of RXTE, with a total NICER and RXTE glitch activity of 8.88 × 10-7 yr-1. The new glitches follow the seemingly unique time-to-next-glitch-glitch-size correlation established previously using RXTE data, with a slope of 5 d µHz-1. For one glitch around which NICER observes two days on either side, we search for but do not see clear evidence of spectral nor pulse profile changes that may be associated with the glitch.

BACKGROUND: Shorter-duration regimens for preventing drug-susceptible tuberculosis (TB) have been shown to be safe and efficacious in children, and may improve acceptability, adherence, and treatment completion. While these regimens have been used in children in low TB burden countries, they are not yet widely used in high TB burden countries. SETTING: Five health facilities in one district in Lesotho, a high TB burden country. OBJECTIVE: Assess the preventive treatment preferences of care givers of child TB contacts. DESIGN: Qualitative data were collected using in-depth interviews with 12 care givers whose children completed preventive treatment, and analyzed using grounded theory. FINDINGS: Care givers were interested in being involved in the children's treatment decisions. Pill burden, treatment duration and related frequency of dosing were identified as important factors that influenced preventive treatment preferences among care givers. CONCLUSION: Understanding care giver preferences and involving them in treatment decisions may facilitate efforts to implement successful preventive treatment for TB among children in high TB burden countries.

RESUMO

Neutron stars are born in the supernova explosion of massive stars. Neutron stars rotate as stably as atomic clocks and possess densities exceeding that of atomic nuclei and magnetic fields millions to billions of times stronger than those created in laboratories on the Earth. The physical properties of neutron stars are determined by many areas of fundamental physics, and detection of gravitational waves can provide invaluable insights into our understanding of these areas. Here, we describe some of the physics and astrophysics of neutron stars and how traditional electromagnetic wave observations provide clues to the sorts of gravitational waves we expect from these stars. We pay particular attention to neutron star fluid oscillations, examining their impact on electromagnetic and gravitational wave observations when these stars are in a wide binary or isolated system, then during binary inspiral right before merger, and finally at times soon after merger.This article is part of a discussion meeting issue 'The promises of gravitational-wave astronomy'.

Swift J0243.6+6124 is a newly discovered Galactic Be/X-ray binary, revealed in late September 2017 in a giant outburst with a peak luminosity of 2 × 1039(d/7 kpc)2 erg s-1 (0.1-10 keV), with no formerly reported activity. At this luminosity, Swift J0243.6+6124 is the first known galactic ultraluminous X-ray pulsar. We describe Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) and Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) timing and spectral analyses for this source. A new orbital ephemeris is obtained for the binary system using spin-frequencies measured with GBM and 15-50 keV fluxes measured with the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory Burst Alert Telescope to model the system's intrinsic spin-up. Power spectra measured with NICER show considerable evolution with luminosity, including a quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) near 50 mHz that is omnipresent at low luminosity and has an evolving central frequency. Pulse profiles measured over the combined 0.2-100 keV range show complex evolution that is both luminosity and energy dependent. Near the critical luminosity of L ~ 1038 erg s-1, the pulse profiles transition from single-peaked to double peaked, the pulsed fraction reaches a minimum in all energy bands, and the hardness ratios in both NICER and GBM show a turn-over to softening as the intensity increases. This behavior repeats as the outburst rises and fades, indicating two distinct accretion regimes. These two regimes are suggestive of the accretion structure on the neutron star surface transitioning from a Coulomb collisional stopping mechanism at lower luminosities to a radiation-dominated stopping mechanism at higher luminosities. This is the highest observed (to date) value of the critical luminosity, suggesting a magnetic field of B ~ 1013 G.

We demonstrate a novel hyperspectral imaging spectrometer based on computational imaging that enables sensitive measurements from smaller, noisier, and less-expensive components (e.g. uncooled microbolometers), making it useful for applications such as small space and air platforms with strict size, weight, and power requirements. The computational reconfigurable imaging spectrometer (CRISP) system exploits platform motion and a spectrally coded focal-plane mask to temporally modulate the optical spectrum, enabling simultaneous measurement of multiple spectral bins. Demodulation of this coded pattern returns an optical spectrum in each pixel.

In this paper, we examine a laser-based approach to remotely initiate, measure, and differentiate acoustic and vibrational emissions from trace quantities of explosive materials against their environment. Using a pulsed ultraviolet laser (266 nm), we induce a significant (>100 Pa) photoacoustic response from small quantities of military-grade explosives. The photoacoustic signal, with frequencies predominantly between 100 and 500 kHz, is detected remotely via a wideband laser Doppler vibrometer. This two-laser system can be used to rapidly detect and discriminate explosives from ordinary background materials, which have significantly weaker photoacoustic response. A 100 ng/cm2 limit of detection is estimated. Photoablation is proposed as the dominant mechanism for the large photoacoustic signals generated by explosives.

Pulsars are known for their superb timing precision, although glitches can interrupt the regular timing behavior when the stars are young. These glitches are thought to be caused by interactions between normal and superfluid matter in the crust of the star. However, glitching pulsars such as Vela have been shown to require a superfluid reservoir that greatly exceeds that available in the crust. We examine a model in which glitches tap the superfluid in the core. We test a variety of theoretical superfluid models against the most recent glitch data and find that only one model can successfully explain up to 45 years of observational data. We develop a new technique for combining radio and x-ray data to measure pulsar masses, thereby demonstrating how current and future telescopes can probe fundamental physics such as superfluidity near nuclear saturation.

Dynamic photoacoustic spectroscopy (DPAS) is a high sensitivity technique for standoff detection of trace vapors. A field-portable DPAS system has potential as an early warning provider for gaseous-based chemical threats. For the first time, we utilize DPAS to successfully detect the presence of trace aerosols. Aerosol identification via long-wavelength infrared (LWIR) spectra is demonstrated. We estimate the sensitivity of our DPAS system to aerosols comprised of silica particles is comparable to that of SF(6) gas based on a signal level per absorbance unit metric for the two materials. The implications of these measurements are discussed.

Neoclassical noncooperative game theory is based on a simple, yet powerful synthesis of mathematical and logical concepts: unconditional and immutable preference orderings and individual rationality. Although this structure has proven useful for characterizing competitive multi-player behavior, its applicability to scenarios involving complex social relationships is problematic. In this paper we directly address this limitation by the introduction of a conditional preference structure that permits players to modulate their preference orderings as functions of the preferences of other players. Embedding this expanded preference structure in a formal and graphical framework provides a systematic approach for characterizing a complex society. The result is an influence network that allows conditional preferences to propagate through the community, resulting in an emergent social model which characterizes all of the social relationships that exist and which leads to solution concepts that account for both group and individual interests. The Ultimatum game is presented as an example of how social influence can be modeled with conditional preferences.

RESUMO

We consider the astrophysical constraints on the gravitational-wave-driven r-mode instability in accreting neutron stars in low-mass x-ray binaries. We use recent results on superfluid and superconducting properties to infer the core temperature in these neutron stars and show the diversity of the observed population. Simple theoretical models indicate that many of these systems reside inside the r-mode instability region. However, this is in clear disagreement with expectations, especially for the systems containing the most rapidly rotating neutron stars. The inconsistency highlights the need to reevaluate our understanding of the many areas of physics relevant to the r-mode instability. We summarize the current status of our understanding, and we discuss directions for future research which could resolve this dilemma.

High-sensitivity (ng/cm²) optical detection of the explosive 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) is demonstrated using photodissociation followed by laser-induced fluorescence (PD-LIF). Detection occurs rapidly, within 6 laser pulses (~7 ns each) at a range of 15 cm. Dropcasting is used to create calibrated samples covering a wide range of TNT concentrations; and a correspondence between fractional area covered by TNT and PD-LIF signal strength is observed. Dropcast data are compared to that of an actual fingerprint. These results demonstrate that PD-LIF could be a viable means of rapidly and remotely scanning surfaces for trace explosive residues.

Noncontact detection of the homemade explosive constituents urea nitrate, nitromethane and ammonium nitrate is achieved using photodissociation followed by laser-induced fluorescence (PD-LIF). Our technique utilizes a single ultraviolet laser pulse (approximately 7 ns) to vaporize and photodissociate the condensed-phase materials, and then to detect the resulting vibrationally-excited NO fragments via laser-induced fluorescence. PD-LIF excitation and emission spectra indicate the creation of NO in vibrationally-excited states with significant rotational energy, useful for low-background detection of the parent compound. The results for homemade explosives are compared to one another and 2,6-dinitrotoluene, a component present in many military explosives.

The surface of hot neutron stars is covered by a thin atmosphere. If there is accretion after neutron-star formation, the atmosphere could be composed of light elements (H or He); if no accretion takes place or if thermonuclear reactions occur after accretion, heavy elements (for example, Fe) are expected. Despite detailed searches, observations have been unable to confirm the atmospheric composition of isolated neutron stars. Here we report an analysis of archival observations of the compact X-ray source in the centre of the Cassiopeia A supernova remnant. We show that a carbon atmosphere neutron star (with low magnetic field) produces a good fit to the spectrum. Our emission model, in contrast with others, implies an emission size consistent with theoretical predictions for the radius of neutron stars. This result suggests that there is nuclear burning in the surface layers and also identifies the compact source as a very young ( approximately 330-year-old) neutron star.

We performed a prospective, randomised trial to evaluate the outcome after surgery of displaced, unstable fractures of the distal radius. A total of 280 consecutive patients were enrolled in a prospective database and 88 identified who met the inclusion criteria for surgery. They were randomised to receive either bridging external fixation with supplementary Kirschner-wire fixation or volar-locked plating with screws. Both groups were similar in terms of age, gender, hand dominance, fracture pattern, socio-economic status and medical co-morbidities. Although the patients treated by volar plating had a statistically significant early improvement in the range of movement of the wrist, this advantage diminished with time and in absolute terms the difference in range of movement was clinically unimportant. Radiologically, there were no clinically significant differences in the reductions, although more patients with AO/OTA (Orthopaedic Trauma Association) type C fractures were allocated to the external fixation group. The function at one year was similar in the two groups. No clear advantage could be demonstrated with either treatment but fewer re-operations were required in the external fixation group.

We investigate the remote detection of explosives via a technique that vaporizes and photodissociates the condensed-phase material and detects the resulting vibrationally excited NO fragments via laser-induced fluorescence. The technique utilizes a single 7 ns pulse of a tunable laser near 236.2 nm to perform these multiple processes. The resulting blue-shifted fluorescence (226 nm) is detected using a photomultiplier and narrowband filter that strongly block the scatter of the pump laser off the solid media while passing the shorter wavelength photons. Various nitro-bearing compounds, including 2,6-dinitrotoluene (DNT), 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT), pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN), and hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) were detected with a signal-to-noise of 25 dB. The effects of laser fluence, wavelength, and sample morphology were examined.

CMOS compatible infrared waveguide Si photodiodes are made responsive from 1100 to 1750 nm by Si(+) implantation and annealing. This article compares diodes fabricated using two annealing temperatures, 300 and 475 degrees C. 0.25-mm-long diodes annealed to 300 degrees C have a response to 1539 nm radiation of 0.1 A W-(-1) at a reverse bias of 5 V and 1.2 A W(-1) at 20 V. 3-mm-long diodes processed to 475 degrees C exhibited two states, L1 and L2, with photo responses of 0.3 +/-0.1 A W(-1) at 5 V and 0.7 +/-0.2 A W(-1) at 20 V for the L1 state and 0.5 +/-0.2 A W(-1) at 5 V and 4 to 20 A W(-1)-1 at 20 V for the L2 state. The diodes can be switched between L1 and L2. The bandwidths vary from 10 to 20 GHz. These diodes will generate electrical power from the incident radiation with efficiencies from 4 to 10 %.

We measured the expression levels of transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) and vascular cell adhesion molecule (VCAM-1) in rat kidney grafts undergoing chronic rejection and treated the rats with six different regimens in order to determine correlation between their expression levels and severity of chronic rejection. F344 or Lewis kidneys were transplanted into Lewis recipients to generate allograft or isograft groups, respectively. Graft recipients were treated with one of the following regimens: (1) untreated isograft, (2) untreated allograft, (3) tacrolimus (FK506), 1 mg/kg/d for 10 days, (4) triptolide (PG490-88), 0.5 mg/kg/d for 10 days, and (5) leflunomide analogue (FK778), 10 mg/kg/d for 10 days. Kidneys were harvested on day 90 after transplantation and subjected to histological analysis and gene expression analysis by real-time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for TGF-beta and VCAM-1. Gene expression values were compared to measurements of chronic rejection by linear regression analysis. Modified Banff score for transplant pathology show that chronic rejection was mild in the FK778 group, moderate in the PG490-88 group, and severe in the FK506 and allograft control groups. Overall, the expression levels of TGF-beta and VCAM-1 show high correlations with histological changes of chronic rejection. Suppression of the expression levels of TGF-beta and VCAM-1 is associated with the amelioration of chronic rejection by various drugs, suggesting that these molecules are important key molecules in chronic rejection.
