RESUMO
A 55-year-old man with the classical mucocutaneous lesions of xanthoma disseminatum has been followed up for a period of 13 years. The special features of this case, which make it unique, are as follows: (1) the availability of histologic data on multiple lesions for more than a ten-year period; (2) the progressive nature of the multiple osseous lesions; (3) the metabolic studies that show no evidence for accumulation of abnormal sterols in a xanthoma, the blood, or intestinal aspirate; (4) the development of hypothyroidism and symptoms or signs, or both, of an intracerebral and an intraspinal lesion; (5) the partial regression of the cutanous symptoms and lesions while receiving clofibrate, in spite of progression of the mucous membrane and osseous lesions, and (6) the failure to develop diabetes insipidus to date.

In the Nude mouse: 1. Xenografts of human tumours often grew successfully. 2. There was very little growth in allografts of actively-growing normal tissue from Swiss mice. 3. Transplants of mature tissue from the toad failed to grow.

If an enzyme-lipid mixture forms phases of pure lipid and enzyme-lipid solution, and enzyme activity depends on the composition of the enzyme-lipid solution, the temperature-dependence of lipid solubility in the enzyme-lipid solution leads to apparent sudden changes in enzyme activation energy without activity discontinuities at lipid phase transition temperatures.

A case of severe "non-responsive" coeliac disease has been shown to be sensitive to gluten whilst under prednisone therapy, but not without prednisone. This adds an additional dimension to the criteria for diagnosis of coeliac disease. Cases of non-responsive coeliac disease may require both prednisone and gluten exclusion to induce a remission. In this patient, azathioprine induced and sustained a remission when unacceptably high doses of prednisone had failed, and may prove to be a valuable immunosuppressive in non-responsive coeliac disease.
