RESUMO

The intestine represents the most complex cellular network in the whole body. It is constantly faced with multiple types of immunostimulatory agents encompassing from food antigen, gut microbiome, metabolic waste products, and dead cell debris. Within the intestine, most T cells are found in three primary compartments: the organized gut-associated lymphoid tissue, the lamina propria, and the epithelium. The well-orchestrated epithelial-immune-microbial interaction is critically important for the precise immune response. The main role of intestinal mesenchymal stromal cells is to support a structural framework within the gut wall. However, recent evidence from stromal cell studies indicates that they also possess significant immunomodulatory functions, such as maintaining intestinal tolerance via the expression of PDL1/2 and MHC-II molecules, and promoting the development of CD103+ dendritic cells, and IgA+ plasma cells, thereby enhancing intestinal homeostasis. In this review, we will summarize the current understanding of CD8+ T cells and stromal cells alongside the intestinal tract and discuss the reciprocal interactions between T subsets and mesenchymal stromal cell populations. We will focus on how the tissue residency, migration, and function of CD8+ T cells could be potentially regulated by mesenchymal stromal cell populations and explore the molecular mediators, such as TGF-ß, IL-33, and MHC-II molecules that might influence these processes. Finally, we discuss the potential pathophysiological impact of such interaction in intestine hemostasis as well as diseases of inflammation, infection, and malignancies.

RESUMO

Sugar substitutes are popular due to their akin taste and low calories. However, excessive use of aspartame and erythritol can have varying effects. While D-allulose is presently deemed a secure alternative to sugar, its excessive consumption is not devoid of cellular stress implications. In this study, the evolution of Escherichia coli Nissle 1917 (EcN) is directed to utilize allulose as sole carbon source through a combination of adaptive laboratory evolution (ALE) and fluorescence-activated droplet sorting (FADS) techniques. Employing whole genome sequencing (WGS) and clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats interference (CRISPRi) in conjunction with compensatory expression displayed those genetic mutations in sugar and amino acid metabolic pathways, including glnP, glpF, gmpA, nagE, pgmB, ybaN, etc., increased allulose assimilation. Enzyme-substrate dynamics simulations and deep learning predict enhanced substrate specificity and catalytic efficiency in nagE A247E and pgmB G12R mutants. The findings evince that these mutations hold considerable promise in enhancing allulose uptake and facilitating its conversion into glycolysis, thus signifying the emergence of a novel metabolic pathway for allulose utilization. These revelations bear immense potential for the sustainable utilization of D-allulose in promoting health and well-being.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is one of the most prevalent neoplasms of malignancy. The pathogenesis of HNSCC is involved in the change of gene expression and the abnormal interaction between genes. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of our research is to find genes that affect the survival time of patients and construct circRNA-lncRNA-miRNA-mRNA network. This paper aims to reveal the development mechanism of HNSCC and provide new ideas for clinical prognosis prediction. METHODS: Transcriptome data were obtained from TCGA and GEO databases. A total of 556 samples were included. We screened the differentially expressed lncRNAs, circRNAs and mRNAs to predict interactions between lncRNA-miRNA, circRNA-miRNA and miRNA-mRNA. Then, we selected the hub mRNAs to predict the prognosis of patients. RESULTS: We identified 8 hub prognostic mRNAs (FAM111A, IFIT2, CAV1, KLF9, OCIAD2, SLCO3A1, S100A16 and APOL3) by a series of bioinformatics analyses and established the prognostic ceRNA network of 8 mRNAs, 3 miRNAs, 2 circRNAs and 1 lncRNAs according to the targeting relationship by using databases. CONCLUSION: We established the circRNA-lncRNA-miRNA-mRNA gene interaction network in HNSCC. We illuminated the molecular mechanism underlying the gene regulation associated with the pathogenesis of HNSCC and predicted the biomarkers related to prognosis.

RESUMO

Neoepitopes have attracted much attention as targets for immunotherapy against cancer. Therefore, efficient neoepitope screening technology is an essential step in the development of personalized vaccines. Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are generated by back-splicing and have a single-stranded continuous circular structure. So far, various circRNAs have been poorly characterized, though new evidence suggests that a few translated circRNAs may play a role in cancer. In the present study, circRNA was used as a source of neoepitope, a novel strategy as circRNA-derived neoepitopes have never been previously explored. The present study reports CIRC_neo (circRNA-derived neoepitope prediction pipeline), which is a comprehensive and automated bioinformatic pipeline for the prediction of circRNA-derived neoepitopes from RNA sequencing data. The computational prediction from sequencing data requires complex computational workflows to identify circRNAs, derive the resulting peptides, infer the types of human leukocyte antigens (HLA I and HLA II) in patients, and predict the neoepitopes binding to these antigens. The present study proposes a novel source of neoepitopes. The study focused on cancer-specific circRNAs, which have greatly expanded the source pool for neoepitope discovery. The statistical analysis of different features of circRNA-derived neoepitopes revealed that circRNAs could produce long proteins or truncated proteins. Because the peptides were completely foreign to the human body, they could be highly immunogenic. Importantly, circRNA-derived neoepitopes capable of binding to HLA were discovered. In the current study, circRNAs were systematically analyzed, revealing potential targets and novel research clues for cancer diagnosis, treatment, and prospective personalized vaccine research.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Acknowledging lacking of consensus exist in total aortic arch (TAA) surgery for acute type A aortic dissection (AAD), this study aimed to investigate the neurologic injury rate between bilateral and unilateral cerebrum perfusion on the specific population. METHODS: A total of 595 AAD patients other than Marfan syndrome receiving TAA surgery since March 2013 to March 2022 were included. Among them, 276 received unilateral cerebral perfusion (via right axillary artery, RCP) and 319 for bilateral cerebral perfusion (BCP). The primary outcome was neurologic injury rate. Secondary outcomes were 30-day mortality, serum inflammation response (high sensitivity C reaction protein, hs-CRP; Interleukin-6, IL-6; cold-inducible RNA binding protein, CIRBP) and neuroprotection (RNA-binding motif 3, RBM3) indexes. RESULTS: The BCP group reported a significantly lower permanent neurologic deficits [odds ratio: 0.481, Confidence interval (CI): 0.296-0.782, p = 0.003] and 30-day mortality (odds ratio: 0.353, CI: 0.194-0.640, p < 0.001) than those received RCP treatment. There were also lower inflammation cytokines (hr-CRP: 114 ± 17 vs. 101 ± 16 mg/L; IL-6: 130 [103,170] vs. 81 [69,99] pg/ml; CIRBP: 1076 [889, 1296] vs. 854 [774, 991] pg/ml, all p < 0.001), but a higher neuroprotective cytokine (RBM3: 4381 ± 1362 vs 2445 ± 1008 pg/mL, p < 0.001) at 24 h after procedure in BCP group. Meanwhile, BCP resulted in a significantly lower Acute Physiology, Age and Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHE) Ⅱscore (18 ± 6 vs 17 ± 6, p < 0.001) and short stay in intensive care unit (4 [3,5] vs. 3 [2,3] days, p < 0.001) and hospital (16 ± 4 vs 14 ± 3 days, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: This present study indicated that BCP compared with RCP was associated with lower permanent neurologic deficits and 30-day mortality in AAD patients other than Marfan syndrome receiving TAA surgery.

RESUMO

Wuhai is a typical coking industrial base including three industrial parks within its jurisdiction. The emission amount of air pollutants is considerable here, and O3 pollution has become serious in recent years. Clarifying the air pollutant emission characteristics and exploring the formation mechanism of O3 are the basis for objectively understanding the O3 pollution and formulating scientific prevention and control measures. This study established the high-resolution emission inventory of Wuhai in 2018 (HEI-WH18) based on the "coefficient method," evaluated the applicability and accuracy of HEI-WH18 using the WRF-Chem model, and explored the causes of O3 pollution in summer using WRF-Chem diagnosis module output. The HEI-WH18 showed that the total emissions amount of SO2, NOx, CO, PM10, PM2.5, VOCs, NH3, BC, and OC were 65943, 40934, 172867, 159771, 47469, 69191, 1407, 1491, and 1648 t·a-1, respectively. HEI-WH18 could capture the variation and magnitude of O3 and its precursors better than the MEIC, which was suitable for the O3 simulation and source analysis in summer. From the perspective of spatial distribution, Haibowan was a high-value area of O3 during the daytime, and the three industrial parks were low-value areas of O3 and high-value areas of NO2 during the daytime and nighttime. The spatial distribution characteristics of CO were consistent with the spontaneous combustion of coal and coal gangue sources. According to the diagnostic analysis of two O3 pollution processes, the O3 increase in the upper boundary layer was mainly related to the advection transport and chemical process, and it was caused by vertical mixing and the advection transport process in the lower boundary layer. The contribution of the chemical process in the lower boundary layer was complicated, and its positive contribution played a role in maintaining a high O3 concentration, whereas its negative contribution combined with advection transport resulted in the final dissipation of O3 pollution.

RESUMO

Common ice plant (Mesembryanthemum crystallinum L.) is a novel edible plant with a succulent and savory flavor. The plants display prominent epidermal bladder cells (EBCs) on the surface of the leaves that store water and sodium chloride (NaCl). The plants have high nutritional value and are adapted to saline soils. Previous research has determined the impact of NaCl on the growth and mineral content of ice plant, but as NaCl has an impact on a food's sensory properties, an interesting question is whether saline growth media can affect the plant's taste and texture, and if this alters consumers' sensory response to ice plant. The objective of this study was to evaluate the sensory aspects of ice plant, as well as consumer liking in response to increasing NaCl concentration in hydroponic nutrient solution. Four-week-old seedlings of ice plant were transplanted into deep water culture (DWC) hydroponic systems and treated with five NaCl concentrations (0 M [control], 0.05 M, 0.10 M, 0.20 M, and 0.40 M NaCl). Eight-week-old plants (after four weeks of NaCl treatment) were harvested, and the middle leaves of each plant were sampled for consumer testing. A total of 115 participants evaluated various flavor, texture, and appearance aspects of ice plant and provided their liking ratings. The consumers were able to discriminate differences in salt intensity from the plants based on NaCl treatment in the hydroponic nutrient solution. Low NaCl concentrations (0.05-0.10 M) did not have obvious adverse effect on consumer liking, which aligns with the result of previous research that 0.05-0.10 M NaCl could largely stimulate the growth of ice plant. NaCl concentrations higher than 0.20 M are not recommended from both a production and consumer perspective. With increased NaCl level in plant samples, the consumers detected more saltiness, sourness, and fishiness, less green flavor, and similar levels of bitterness and sweetness. NaCl treatment had no effects on leaf appearance and texture, and the consumers' overall liking was mainly determined by flavor. Overall, ice plant presents some unique attributes (salty and juicy) compared to other edible salad greens; however, consumer awareness of ice plant is very low, and purchase intent is relatively low as well. Consumers picture ice plant being used mainly in salads and in restaurants.

RESUMO

The nucleoside antibiotic angustmycin, produced by some Streptomyces strains, is composed of adenine and C6 sugar and shows antibiotic and antitumor activities. In this study, we propose a biosynthetic pathway for angustmycin using a heterologous expression experiment coupled with in silico analysis of the angustmycin biosynthetic gene (agm) cluster. The biochemical characterization of Agm6 demonstrated its role in angustmycin biosynthesis as an unprecedented dehydratase.

RESUMO

In recent years, summer O3 pollution has become more severe in Wuhai, where the terrain is complex and industrial parks are densely distributed. However, the characteristics and formation mechanisms of this pollution have not yet been investigated and remain unclear. Analyzing the variation and formation mechanisms of O3 is crucial to the prevention and control of air pollution in this region. By analyzing characteristics and using a WRF-CMAQ model to simulate three O3 pollution periods in Wuhai from June to August 2018, this study explored the causes of O3 pollution based on in-depth process analysis, and the effects of regional transportation and local photochemical reaction on O3 were also discussed. The diurnal variation of ozone exhibited a single-peak distribution, and near-surface O3 was positively correlated with short-wave radiation and temperature, and negatively correlated with relative humidity. The areas of Shizuishan in Ningxia and the Ulanbuhe desert exhibited high O3 values during the day, while the three industrial parks in Wuhai exhibited low values during both the day and night. Process analysis showed that transportation, chemical processes, and their relative magnitudes had a significant impact on O3. Local photochemical reactions and transport during the pollution period in June and July led to an obvious increase in O3, while the impact of chemical processes was about twice as large as that of transport. The increase of O3 in August was mainly caused by transport. Further decomposition of the transportation effect showed that transportation in the south and northwest directions had a remarkable effects on the increase of O3. Together with the emission of O3 precursors, the main sources of transportation were the Yinchuan, Shizuishan, and Bayannaoer regions. Therefore, Wuhai and neighboring cities should strengthen regional joint prevention and control by jointly formulating and implementing control measures for air pollution to reduce the impact of regional transmission on O3.

RESUMO

T-cell recognition of somatic mutation-derived cancer neoepitopes can lead to tumor regression. Due to the difficulty to identify effective neoepitopes, constructing a database for sharing experimentally validated cancer neoantigens will be beneficial to precise cancer immunotherapy. Meanwhile, the routine neoepitope prediction in silico is important but laborious for clinical use. Here we present NEPdb, a database that contains more than 17,000 validated human immunogenic neoantigens and ineffective neoepitopes within human leukocyte antigens (HLAs) via curating published literature with our semi-automatic pipeline. Furthermore, NEPdb also provides pan-cancer level predicted HLA-I neoepitopes derived from 16,745 shared cancer somatic mutations, using state-of-the-art predictors. With a well-designed search engine and visualization modes, this database would enhance the efficiency of neoantigen-based cancer studies and treatments. NEPdb is freely available at http://nep.whu.edu.cn/.

RESUMO

There is a highly nonlinear relationship between ozone concentrations and its precursor emissions in different regions and at different times, which makes developing effective prevention and control measures difficult. An orthogonal experimental method was introduced to assess the influence of ozone precursors and their interactions on ozone formation, clarify the sensitivity of ozone generation, and propose an optimal control scheme. Based on the WRF-Chem air quality model and an emission inventory of air pollutants in Wuhai City in 2018, this study used an ozone pollution event in the Haibowan urban area (August 17 to 20 2018) to investigate the nonlinear response of ozone formation to its precursors. The orthogonal experiment shows that NOx, VOCs interactions with CO, CO, and interactions between pollutants and meteorological factors are the main factors affects ozone concentrations in the Haibowan urban area. Ozone generation was most sensitive to NOx concentrations during the hours 12:00-18:00 when standard values were exceeded. The ozone concentrations decreased significantly by 12.6 µg·m-3 (7.8%) as NOx, VOCs, and CO were reduced by 60%, 30%, and 30%, respectively. Through the analysis of chemical reaction mechanisms, it is concluded that VOCs and CO affect the photochemical reaction by reacting with·OH, HO2·and other free radicals, which causes the significant interaction between VOCs and CO in the generation of ozone. This method provides a new approach for researching the nonlinear response of ozone formation to its precursors and for proposing ozone pollution control schemes.

RESUMO

City-scale high-resolution anthropogenic emission inventories are an important tool for ambient air quality forecasting and early warning, the analysis of underlying causes, and policy making. At present, city-scale anthropogenic emissions inventories for use in air quality models are scarce for West China. By studying the literature on emission inventories, this paper establishes a city-scale anthropogenic emission inventory for Lanzhou (HEI-LZ16) as the basis for an air quality model. The weather research and forecasting with chemistry (WRF-Chem) model was used to evaluate the applicability of the emission inventory at different resolutions in Lanzhou. The results showed that the emission amounts of SO2, NOx, CO, NH3, VOCs, PM10, PM2.5, BC, and OC in Lanzhou were 25642, 53998, 319003, 10475, 35289, 49250, 19822, 2476, and 1482 t·a-1 in 2016,respectively. Compared with the simulation scenario of multi-resolution emission inventory for China (MEIC), normalized mean error (NME) of O3 and PM2.5 under the HEI-LZ16 scenario decreased by 140.2% and 28.8%, respectively. The HEI-LZ16 inventory is more suitable for application in air pollution research in Lanzhou, which was verified by the WRF-Chem model and the observational data. The spatiotemporal distributions of PM2.5 and O3 were also analyzed using the HEI-LZ16 scenario. The ozone concentration of the maximum daily 8-h average (MDA8) in Lanzhou was low in urban areas and high in the suburbs during winter and spring, and high in the west of the urban valley and its downwind areas during summer and autumn. MDA8 in summer and autumn was influenced by easterly winds and photochemical reactions. In winter, ozone concentrations in urban areas are suppressed by NOx emissions but the concentration decreases. High PM2.5 concentrations are mainly concentrated within the Yellow River Valley. This study shows that there is a pollutant transmission channel along the western side of the Baiyin-Lanzhou Yellow River Valley, which has a greater impact on the ambient air quality in Lanzhou.

RESUMO

Genetic mutations lead to the production of mutated proteins from which peptides are presented to T cells as cancer neoantigens. Evidence suggests that T cells that target neoantigens are the main mediators of effective cancer immunotherapies. Although algorithms have been used to predict neoantigens, only a minority are immunogenic. The factors that influence neoantigen immunogenicity are not completely understood. Here, we classified human neoantigen/neopeptide data into three categories based on their TCR-pMHC binding events. We observed a conservative mutant orientation of the anchor residue from immunogenic neoantigens which we termed the "NP" rule. By integrating this rule with an existing prediction algorithm, we found improved performance in neoantigen prioritization. To better understand this rule, we solved several neoantigen/MHC structures. These structures showed that neoantigens that follow this rule not only increase peptide-MHC binding affinity but also create new TCR-binding features. These molecular insights highlight the value of immune-based classification in neoantigen studies and may enable the design of more effective cancer immunotherapies.

RESUMO

Phosphorus (P) deficiency in agricultural soil is a major constraint for crop production and increasing P acquisition efficiency (PAE) of plants is considered as one of the most cost-effective solutions for yield increase. The objective of this study was to detect quantitative trait loci (QTL) controlling (PAE) and P utilization efficiency (PUE) in barley under applied (+P) and non-applied P (-P) conditions. Based on the analysis of a recombinant inbred lines (RILs) population derived from a cross between a malting barley variety and a wild barley accession, 17 QTL controlling PAE, PUE and yield traits were detected. The phenotypic variation explained by each of these QTL ranges from 11.0 to 24.7%. Significant correlation was detected between most of P-related traits and yield traits. Five QTL clusters were identified on four different chromosomes (1H, 3H, 5H, and 7H). Two of the QTL clusters, located on chromosome 1H (for GPUP/PUP) and 7H (for SPUE/SPC), respectively, are novel. Fourteen genes located in the interval harboring the major QTL were identified as candidates associated with P efficiency. The stable QTL for PAE, PUE and yield-related traits could be important for breeding P-efficient barley varieties.

RESUMO

Motivation: Protein fold classification is a critical step in protein structure prediction. There are two possible ways to classify protein folds. One is through template-based fold assignment and the other is ab-initio prediction using machine learning algorithms. Combination of both solutions to improve the prediction accuracy was never explored before. Results: We developed two algorithms, HH-fold and SVM-fold for protein fold classification. HH-fold is a template-based fold assignment algorithm using the HHsearch program. SVM-fold is a support vector machine-based ab-initio classification algorithm, in which a comprehensive set of features are extracted from three complementary sequence profiles. These two algorithms are then combined, resulting to the ensemble approach TA-fold. We performed a comprehensive assessment for the proposed methods by comparing with ab-initio methods and template-based threading methods on six benchmark datasets. An accuracy of 0.799 was achieved by TA-fold on the DD dataset that consists of proteins from 27 folds. This represents improvement of 5.4-11.7% over ab-initio methods. After updating this dataset to include more proteins in the same folds, the accuracy increased to 0.971. In addition, TA-fold achieved >0.9 accuracy on a large dataset consisting of 6451 proteins from 184 folds. Experiments on the LE dataset show that TA-fold consistently outperforms other threading methods at the family, superfamily and fold levels. The success of TA-fold is attributed to the combination of template-based fold assignment and ab-initio classification using features from complementary sequence profiles that contain rich evolution information. RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Nitroglycerin (NTG) is one of the few immediate treatments for acute angina. Aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2) is a key enzyme in the human body that facilitates the biological metabolism of NTG. The biological mechanism of NTG serves an important function in NTG efficacy. Some reports still contradict the results that the correlation between ALDH2 gene polymorphisms and NTG and its clinical efficacy is different. However, data on NTG measurement by pain relief are subjective. This study aimed to investigate the influence of ALDH2 gene polymorphism on intervention with sublingual NTG using noninvasive hemodynamic parameters of cardiac output (CO) and systemic vascular resistance (SVR) in Northern Chinese Han population. METHODS: This study selected 559 patients from the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University. A total of 203 patients presented with coronary heart disease (CHD) and 356 had non-CHD (NCHD) cases. All patient ALDH2 genotypes (G504A) were detected and divided into two types: Wild (GG) and mutant (GA/AA). Among the CHD group, 103 were wild-type cases, and 100 were mutant-type cases. Moreover, 196 cases were wild-type, and 160 cases were mutant type among the NCHD volunteers. A noninvasive hemodynamic detector was used to monitor the CO and the SVR at the 0, 5, and 15 minute time points after medication with 0.5 mg sublingual NTG. Two CO and SVR indicators were used for a comparative analysis of all case genotypes. RESULTS: Both CO and SVR indicators significantly differed between the wild and mutant genotypes at various time points after intervention with sublingual NTG at 5 and 15 minutes in the NCHD (F = 16.460, 15.003, P = 0.000, 0.000) and CHD groups (F = 194.482, 60.582, P = 0.000, 0.000). All CO values in the wild-type case of both NCHD and CHD groups increased, whereas those in the mutant type decreased. The CO and ΔCO differences were statistically significant (P < 0.05; P < 0.05). The SVR and ΔSVR changed between the wild- and mutant-type cases at all-time points in both NCHD and CHD groups had statistically significant differences (P < 0.05; P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: ALDH2 (G504A) gene polymorphism is associated with changes in noninvasive hemodynamic parameters (i.e. CO and SVR) after intervention with sublingual NTG. This gene polymorphism may influence the effect of NTG intervention on Northern Chinese Han population.

RESUMO

Risk-based soil environmental standard is one of the important aspects in contaminated soil management which have already been widely used in many countries. However, because of diversity in geographical, biological, social-cultural, regulatory and scientific aspects among each country, there are great distinctions on both titles and values of these soil environmental standards between different countries. Risk-based soil environmental standards and derivation process were introduced and compared in detail. The variability was analyzed and explained through the comparison of sensitivity risk receptors, land utilizations and pathways of exposure among these countries. We suggest that the risk-based soil environmental standards among the developed countries could be classified as target value, screening value and intervention value, which aim to protect soil for sustainable development in the future, to determine whether there is potential unacceptable risk to specified acceptors, and whether further counter-actions should be conducted, respectively. At last, risk assessment of contaminated soils and establishment of risk-based soil environmental standards in China was proposed.

RESUMO

Plant uptake factor (PUF), single-variable regression of natural log-transformed concentrations in rice grain/vegetables versus natural log-transformed concentrations in soil and multiple-variable regression with soil concentrations and pH, was derived, validated and compared based on the paired crop and soil data collected from studies regarding As, Cd and Pb contaminated croplands in China. Results showed that the median value of PUF did not present deterministic prediction. But after natural logarithm transformation, the PUF followed Gaussian distribution which could be useful in risk assessment. The single-variable regression models were significant for As, Cd and Pb uptake both by rice and vegetables; however, the standard errors of all the regressions were comparatively large. Soil pH as a variable was generally significant but it only contributed positively to model fit for Cd uptake. After model comparison and selection, the upper 95% prediction limits of the multiple regression model for Cd uptake by rice was recommended to calculate screening value of Cd for paddy soil based on the limit for Cd concentration in rice grain.

RESUMO

The statistical characteristics of plant uptake factor (PUF) of As, Cd and Pb for rice/wheat cereal were analyzed and summarized based on collected data in China. The data were selected and distinguished between field investigation and glasshouse experiment in which metal salts were added to clean soils as grown media. Results showed that the PUF median and range of As, Cd and Pb for rice cereal were 0.026 (0.004-0.090), 0.150 (0.014-1.470), 0.005 (0.001-0.031) and 0.010 (0.003-0.033), 0.360 (0.056-1.700), 0.002 (0.001-0.019) for field investigation and salt added experiment respectively. The PUF median and range of As, Cd and Pb for wheat cereal were 0.010 (0.001-0.110), 0.190 (0.030-2.110), 0.017 (0.001-0.075) and 0.010 (0.003-0.028), 0.150 (0.055-0.730), 0.001 (0.001-0.014) for field investigation and salt added experiment respectively. Significant PUF distribution differences were found between field investigation and salt added experiment. PUF provided not exactly predictive ability of metal uptake by crops since the PUF values were influenced by a variety of factors including the soil contamination levels, basic soils characteristics, the cultivation of the crops and other environmental conditions. However, the ln (PUF) followed Gaussian distribution (R2 = 0.38-0.94) which is useful for general risk assessment and soil benchmark derivation of contaminated croplands. Use of these statistical models is restricted to the range of data they have been derived, as extrapolation outside this range is often unreliable. Soil properties and surrounding environment of the crops should also be in accordance with the conditions PUF derived.
