RESUMO

An increasing number of epidemiological studies have explored the relationship between the risk of gastric cancer and specific dietary patterns, but the findings remain inconclusive. We, therefore, performed this comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis to analyze the available evidence regarding the associations between a priori and a posteriori dietary patterns and the risk of gastric cancer. A systematic search of six electronic databases, including PubMed, Web of Science, EBSCO, Scopus, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), and Wanfang Data, was carried out to retrieve the relevant articles published up to March 2024. Thirty-six studies (10 cohort and 26 case-control studies) with a total of 2 181 762 participants were included in the final analyses. Combining 15 effect sizes extracted from 12 articles, we observed a reduced risk of gastric cancer in the highest versus the lowest categories of the Mediterranean diet [relative risk (RR), 0.72; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.61-0.85; P < 0.001]. Combining 11 effect sizes from 10 articles (involving 694 240 participants), we found that the highest Dietary Inflammatory Index scores were significantly associated with an increased risk of gastric cancer (RR, 1.32; 95% CI, 1.11-1.57; P < 0.001). A reduced risk of gastric cancer was shown for the highest compared with the lowest categories of healthy dietary pattern (RR, 0.78; 95% CI, 0.67-0.91; P = 0.002). Conversely, the highest adherence to the Western dietary pattern was associated with an increased risk of gastric cancer (RR, 1.33; 95% CI, 1.19-1.49; P < 0.001). Our study demonstrated that the Mediterranean diet and a healthy dietary pattern were associated with a decreased risk of gastric cancer. Conversely, the Dietary Inflammatory Index and Western dietary pattern were associated with an increased risk of gastric cancer.

N-Glycosylated heterocycles play important roles in biological systems and drug development. The synthesis of these compounds heavily relies on ionic N-glycosylation, which is usually constrained by factors such as labile glycosyl donors, precious metal catalysts, and stringent conditions. Herein, we report a dehydroxylative radical method for synthesizing N-glycosides by leveraging copper metallaphotoredox catalysis, in which stable and readily available 1-hydroxy carbohydrates are activated for direct N-glycosylation. Our method employs inexpensive photo- and copper- catalysts and can tolerate some extent of water. The reaction exhibits a broad substrate scope, encompassing 76 examples, and demonstrates high stereoselectivity, favoring 1,2-trans selectivity for furanoses and α-selectivity for pyranoses. It also exhibits high site-selectivity for substrates containing multiple N-atoms. The synthetic utility is showcased through the late-stage functionalization of bioactive compounds and pharmaceuticals like Olaparib, Axitinib, and Metaxalone. Mechanistic studies prove the presence of glycosyl radicals and the importance of copper metallaphotoredox catalysis.

This research sought to examine how the physicochemical characteristics of soy globulins and different processing techniques influence the gel properties of soy yogurt. The goal was to improve these gel properties and rectify any texture issues in soy yogurt, ultimately aiming to produce premium-quality plant-based soy yogurt. In this research study, the investigation focused on examining the impact of 7S/11S, homogenization pressure, and glycation modified with glucose on the gel properties of soy yogurt. A plant-based soy yogurt with superior gel and texture properties was successfully developed using a 7S/11S globulin-glucose conjugate at a 1:3 ratio and a homogenization pressure of 110 MPa. Compared to soy yogurt supplemented with pectin or gelatin, this yogurt demonstrated enhanced characteristics. These findings provide valuable insights into advancing plant protein gels and serve as a reference for cultivating new soybean varieties by soybean breeding experts.

PURPOSE: With the increasing level of automation in automobiles, the advent of autonomous vehicles has reduced the tendency of drivers and passengers to focus on the task of driving. The increasing automation in automobiles reduced the drivers' and passengers' focus on driving, which allowed occupants to choose a more relaxed and comfortable sitting position. Meanwhile, the occupant's sitting position went from a frontal, upright position to a more relaxed and reclined one, which resulted in the existing restraint systems cannot to keep occupants safe and secure. This study aimed to determine the effects of different reclining states on occupants' lumbar and neck injuries. METHODS: This is an original research on the field of automotive safety engineering. Occupants in different initial sitting positions (25°, 35°, 45°, and 55°) were adapted to changes in seat back angle and restraint systems and placed in the same frontal impact environment. Neck injury indexes, lumbar axial compression force and acceleration, as well as occupant dynamic response during the impact, were compared in different sitting positions. The injury response and kinematic characteristics of occupants in different reclining positions were analyzed by the control variable method. RESULTS: As the sitting angle increased, the occupant's head acceleration decreased, and the forward-lean angle decreased. Occupants in the standard sitting position had the greatest neck injury, with an Nij of 0.95, and were susceptible to abbreviated injury scale 2+ cervical medullary injuries. As the seatback angle increased, the geometric position of the lumbar spine tended to be horizontal, and the impact load transmitted greater forces to the lumbar spine. The occupant's lumbar injury was greatest in the lying position, with a peak axial compression force on the lumbar region of 5.5 KN, which was 2.3 KN greater than in the standard sitting position. CONCLUSION: The study of occupant lumbar and neck injuries based on different recline states can provide a theoretical basis for optimizing lumbar evaluation indexes, which is conducive to the understanding of the lumbar injury mechanism and the comprehensive consideration of occupant safety protection.

Secondary hydrate formation or hydrate reformation poses a serious threat to the oil and gas transportation safety and natural gas hydrate exploitation efficiency. The hydrate reformation behaviors in porous media have been widely studied in large simulators due to their importance in traditional industries and new energy resources. However, it is difficult to understand the interfacial effects of hydrate reformation on the surface and in micropores of the porous media via a basic experimental apparatus. In this work, in situ X-ray computed tomography (X-CT) technology is used to detect the period, distribution, volume, and morphology characteristics of secondary hydrate formation during hydrate dissociation under depressurization, thermal stimulation, and the combined conditions. It is found that the secondary hydrate formation is inevitable under any conditions of hydrate dissociation. The secondary hydrate morphology varies among porous, grain-enveloping, grain-cementing, granular, and patchy structures, which are closely correlated to the hydrate reformation region and gas/water saturated conditions during hydrate dissociation. Accordingly, we revealed that the interfacial superheating phenomenon before hydrate dissociation could provide a supercooling condition for hydrate reformation. The gas flow along the interface of pores and inside the liquid water, as well as gas accumulation in noninterconnected pores, would exaggerate the hydrate reformation by increasing the local pore pressure. Meanwhile, the hydrate reformation aggravates the nonuniform distribution of gas hydrates in pores. In order to avoid hydrate reformation during dissociation, we further compared hydrate reformation and dissociation behaviors under three hydrate dissociation conditions. It is revealed that the combination of thermal stimulation and depressurization is an effective method for hydrate dissociation by retarding secondary hydrate formation. This study provides visual evidence and an interaction mechanism between interfacial heat and mass transfer, as well as secondary hydrate formation behaviors, which can be favorable for future quantitative research on secondary hydrate formation in different scales under various dissociation conditions.

The tea leafhopper, Empoasca onukii, relies on substrate-borne vibrations for sexual communication and is mainly controlled with chemical pesticides, which poses risks to the environment and food safety. Based on previous studies, we conducted a series of behavioral assays by simultaneous observation of vibration signals and movement to investigate the mating and post-copulation behavior of tea leafhoppers. During mating, the activity of E. onukii was restricted to dawn and dusk and concentrated on the sixth or seventh mature leaf below the tea bud. By comparing the time spent in locating females among different males, the timely reply of females was the key factor affecting mating success. Empoasca onukii females mated only once in their lives, while males could mate multiple times. Male rivalry behavior involved two distinct strategies. The rivals could send disruptive pulses to overlap the male calling signals, locate the courting males, and drive them away after contact. Some rivals could emit mating disruption signals (MDSs) to interrupt the ongoing identification duet and establish their own mating communication. Both identification and location duets could be interrupted by playback of MDSs, which is essential to create effective synthetic signals to disrupt mating communication of E. onukii. Our study clarified the spatial and temporal distribution of E. onukii in mating and the function of MDSs, which will be essential to develop future vibrational mating disruption techniques for E. onukii and its energy-efficient application in the field.

Sulfur mustard [HD; bis-(2-chloroethyl) sulfide] and other analogues are a kind of highly toxic vesicant and have been prohibited by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) since 1997. Exposures to HD could generate several adducts in the plasma and hydrolysis products in the urine, which are widely applied as biomarkers to identify HD exposure in forensic analysis. Several methods have been developed for the detection of related biomarkers. However, most methods are based on complex derivatization, and not enough attention is paid to HD analogues. A modified and convenient analytical method reported herein includes simultaneous incubation and organic solvent extraction. The biomarkers such as thiodiglycol and 1,2-bis (2-hydroxyethylthio) are transferred to HD and 1,2-bis(2-chloroethylthio) ethane via hydrochloric acid at the appropriate temperature. The analytes are analyzed by gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) with 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide (2-CEES) applied as the internal standard. The interday and intraday study according to FDA rules has been achieved to evaluate the accuracy and precision of the method. The two targets are detected with a good linearity (R2 > 0.99) in the concentration ranges from 5 to 1000 ng/mL and 10 to 1000 ng/mL, with small relative standard deviations (RSD ≤6.62% and RSD ≤6.93%) and favorable recoveries between 90.3 and 107.3% and between 89.4 and 108.7%, respectively. The established method can be used for retrospective detection of sulfur mustards in biological samples and successfully applied in the biomedical proficiency testing organized by the OPCW.

Methyl-diethanolamine (CAS: 105-59-9), ethyl-diethanolamine (CAS: 139-87-7), and triethanolamine (CAS: 102-71-6) were identified as the degradation products and bio-markers of nitrogen mustard exposure. Sensitive and convenient detection methods for amino alcohol are of great importance to identify nitrogen mustard exposure in forensic analysis. Herein, analytical methods including gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry combined with heptafluorobutyryl derivatization and solid phase extraction were established for retrospective detection of the biomarkers in human plasma and urine samples. The efficiency of the method was improved by optimizing the conditions for sample preparation and the GC-MS/MS method. The optimization included the derivatization temperature, reaction time, reagent dosage and solid phase extraction cartridges, eluent and pH of the loading sample. The results indicated that the SCX cartridge resulted in better enrichment and purification effects, and the best recovery could be obtained with pH = 3-4 for the loading samples and an eluent of 2 mL 10% NH4OH/MeOH. The GC-MS/MS parameters were also optimized for better specificity and sensitivity. The established method was fully validated for each analyte both in plasma and urine matrixes. The linear range of analytes in plasma was 1.0-1000 ng mL-1 with a correlation parameter (R2) of ≥0.994, intra-day/inter-day accuracy of 93.7-117%, and relative standard deviation (RSD) of ≤6.5%. Meanwhile the results in urine were 1.0-1000 ng mL-1 with R2 of ≥0.996, intra-day/inter-day accuracy of 94.3-122%, and RSD of ≤6.6%. The detection limit of the analytes was 1.0 ng mL-1. The method was applied for the detection and identification of trace amino alcohols present in urine samples dispatched by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and the results were confirmed to be correct.

Angiogenesis has been considered a pivotal strategy for treating ischemic heart disease. One possible approach, the Shexiang Baoxin Pill (MUSKARDIA), has been noted to promote angiogenesis, but its underlying mechanism is still largely unknown. We aimed to determine the effects of MUSKARDIA on acute myocardial infarction (AMI), as well as the underlying mechanistic bases. AMI was induced in rats, using left anterior descending coronary arterial occlusion, and either 6 (low) or 12 (high-dose) mg/kg/day of MUSKARDIA was administered for 56 days. We found that MUSKARDIA improved cardiac function and counteracted against adverse remodeling among AMI rats, which most likely is due to it promoting angiogenesis. Transcriptome analysis by RNA-sequencing found that MUSKARDIA up-regulated cardiac pro-angiogenic genes, particularly growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF15), which was confirmed by RT-qPCR. This up-regulation was also correlated with elevated serum GDF15 levels. In vitro analyses with human umbilical vein endothelial cells found that increased GDF15, stimulated by MUSKARDIA, resulted in enhanced cell migration, proliferation, and tubular formation, all of which were reversed after GDF15 knockdown using a lentiviral vector. Gene Ontology, as well as Kyoto Genes and Genomes enrichment analyses identified calcium signaling pathway as a major contributor to these outcomes, which was verified by Western blot and Cal-590 AM loading showing that transient receptor potential cation channel subfamily V member 4 protein (TRPV4) and intracellular Ca2+ levels increased in accordance with MUSKARDIA-induced GDF15 up-regulation, and decreased with GDF15 knock-down. Therefore, MUSKARDIA may exert its cardioprotective effects via stimulating the GDF15/TRPV4/calcium signaling/angiogenesis axis.

Many artificial organelles or subcellular compartments have been developed to tune gene expression, regulate metabolic pathways, or endow new cell functions. Most of these organelles or compartments were built using proteins or nucleic acids as building blocks. In this study, we demonstrated that capsular polysaccharide (CPS) retained inside bacteria cytosol assembled into mechanically stable CPS compartments. The CPS compartments were able to accommodate and release protein molecules but not lipids or nucleic acids. Intriguingly, we found that the CPS compartment size responds to osmotic stress and this compartment improves cell survival under high osmotic pressures, which was similar to the vacuole functionalities. By fine-tuning the synthesis and degradation of CPS with osmotic stress-responsive promoters, we achieved dynamic regulation of the size of CPS compartments and the host cells in response to external osmotic stress. Our results shed new light on developing prokaryotic artificial organelles with carbohydrate macromolecules.

BACKGROUND: Although traumatic brain injury (TBI) occurs in a very short time, the biological consequence of a TBI, such as Alzheimer's disease, may last a lifetime. To date, effective interventions are not available to improve recovery from a TBI. Herein we aimed to ascertain whether recovery of neurosurgical high-frequency irreversible electroporation (HFIRE) injury in brain tissues can be accelerated by 7,8-dihydroxyflavone (7,8-DHF). METHODS: The HFIRE injury was induced in the right parietal cortex of 8 adult healthy and neurologically intact male dogs. Two weeks before HFIRE injury, each dog was administered orally with or without 7,8-DHF (30 mg/kg) once daily for consecutive 2 weeks (n = 4 for each group). The values of blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption, brain edema, and cerebral infarction volumes were measured. The concentrations of beta-amyloid, interleukin-1ß, interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor-α in the cerebrospinal fluid were measured biochemically. RESULTS: The BBB disruption, brain edema, infarction volumes, and maximal cross-section area caused by HFIRE injury in canine brain were significantly attenuated by 7,8-DHF therapy (P < 0.0001). Additionally, 7,8-DHF significantly reduced the HFIRE-induced cerebral overproduction of beta-amyloid and proinflammatory cytokines in the cerebrospinal fluid (P < 0.0001) in dogs with HFIRE. CONCLUSIONS: Recovery of neurosurgical HFIRE injury in canine brain tissues can be accelerated by 7,8-DHT via ameliorating BBB disruption as well as cerebral overproduction of both beta-amyloid and proinflammatory cytokines.

In this work, a green emissive nanocomposite was synthesized by embedding nitrogen-doped carbon dots into hydrotalcite (N-CD/hydrotalcite) via a hydrothermal process for the recognition of latent fingerprints (LFPs). Good dispersion of the nano-sized N-CD on the surface of hydrotalcite overcomes the fluorescence quenching of N-CD in the solid state and can enhance solid-state fluorescence. N-CD/hydrotalcite emits stable strong green fluorescence even at different excitation wavelengths and exhibits good selectivity and sensitivity for the visualization of LFPs on various substrates such as glass slides, tiles, leather, aluminum foil, printing paper, colored surfaces of plastic packing, copper foil, planks, leaves, currencies, and bar codes. The high-level details of the ridge patterns of both fresh and aged LFPs can be clearly identified with good clarity and high contrast without background interferences under the excitation of a 450 nm light source. There is no significant difference in the LFP image visualized by N-CD/hydrotalcite and commercial fluorescent powders, indicating that the effectiveness of N-CD/hydrotalcite for the visualization of LFPs is equivalent to that of commercial fluorescent powders. These observations illustrate that N-CD/hydrotalcite has great potential in the recognition of LFPs.

This study aims to determine the influence of the hip flexion angle on the injury trends of lower limbs. An impact model was established using a hybrid human body model and an accurate vehicle model. Simulations were performed in two boundary environments of 25 and 40% overlap impacts under different hip flexion angles. The analysis of the dynamic responses indicated that the hip flexion angle significantly affected the injury trends. The maximum femur index of different overlaps was all found at the minimum hip angle, except for the left femur at 25% overlap rate. Meanwhile, the maximum acetabular stress was all found at the minimum hip angle (approximately 0.09-0.20 GPa). This study provides mechanistic insights into the lower limb injuries associated with complex human postures.

Purposes: We aimed to characterize the USH2A genotypic spectrum in a Chinese cohort and provide a detailed genetic profile for Chinese patients with USH2A-IRD. Methods: We designed a retrospective study wherein a total of 1,334 patients diagnosed with IRD were included as a study cohort, namely 1,278 RP and 56 USH patients, as well as other types of IEDs patients and healthy family members as a control cohort. The genotype-phenotype correlation of all participants with USH2A variant was evaluated. Results: Etiological mutations in USH2A, the most common cause of RP and USH, were found in 16.34% (n = 218) genetically solved IRD patients, with prevalences of 14.87% (190/1,278) and 50% (28/56). After bioinformatics and QC processing, 768 distinct USH2A variants were detected in all participants, including 136 disease-causing mutations present in 665 alleles, distributed in 5.81% of all participants. Of these 136 mutations, 43 were novel, nine were founder mutations, and two hot spot mutations with allele count ≥10. Furthermore, 38.5% (84/218) of genetically solved USH2A-IRD patients were caused by at least one of both c.2802T>G and c.8559-2 A>G mutations, and 36.9% and 69.6% of the alleles in the RP and USH groups were truncating, respectively. Conclusion: USH2A-related East Asian-specific founder and hot spot mutations were the major causes for Chinese RP and USH patients. Our study systematically delineated the genotype spectrum of USH2A-IRD, enabled accurate genetic diagnosis, and provided East Asian and other ethnicities with baseline data of a Chinese origin, which would better serve genetic counseling and therapeutic targets selection.

Gas hydrate has great application potential in gas separation, energy storage, seawater desalination, etc. However, the intensity of mass and heat transfer is not enough to meet the needs of efficient hydrate synthesis. Nanoparticles, different from other liquid chemical additives, are considered as effective additives to promote hydrate formation due to their rich specific surface area and excellent thermal conductivity. This work summarizes the effect of the nanoparticles on the thermodynamics and kinetics of hydrate formation. And also, this work probes into the mechanism of the effect of the nanoparticles on the formation of hydrate as well as provides some suggestions for future research. It is found that it's difficult for nanoparticles to effectively promote the formation of the gas hydrate without the use of surfactants, because the adhesion characteristics of the nanoparticles make them easily agglomerate or even agglomerate in solution. In addition, at present, the research on the influence of nanoparticles on the formation and decomposition of natural gas hydrate is still very fragmented, and the micro mechanism of the influence is not clear, which requires more systematic and specific research in the future. At the same time, the development of nanoparticles that can promote the formation of natural gas hydrate should also become the focus of future research.

PURPOSE: To expand the mutation spectrum of patients with familial exudative vitreoretinopathy (FEVR) disease. PARTICIPANTS: 74 probands (53 families and 21 sporadic probands) with familial exudative vitreoretinopathy (FEVR) disease and their available family members (n = 188) were recruited for sequencing. METHODS: Panel-based targeted screening was performed on all subjects. Before sanger sequencing, variants of LRP5, NDP, FZD4, TSPAN12, ZNF408, KIF11, RCBTB1, JAG1, and CTNNA1 genes were verified by a series of bioinformatics tools and genotype-phenotype co-segregation analysis. RESULTS: 40.54% (30/74) of the probands were sighted to possess at least one etiological mutation of the nine FEVR-causative genes. The etiological mutation detection rate was 37.74% (20/53) in family-attainable probands while 47.62% (10/21) in sporadic cases. The diagnosis rate of patients in the early-onset subgroup (≤5 years old, 45.4%) is higher than that of the children or adolescence-onset subgroup (6-16 years old, 42.1%) and the late-onset subgroup (≥17 years old, 39.4%). A total of 36 etiological mutations were identified in this study, comprising 26 novel mutations and 10 reported mutations. LRP5 was the most prevalent mutant gene among the 36 mutation types with a percentage of 41.67% (15/36). Followed by FZD4 (10/36, 27.78%), TSPAN12 (5/36, 13.89%), NDP (4/36, 11.11%), KIF11 (1/36, 2.78%), and RCBTB1 (1/36, 2.78%). Among these mutations, 63.89% (23/36) were missense mutations, 25.00% (9/36) were frameshift mutations, 5.56% (2/36) were splicing mutations, 5.56% (2/36) were nonsense mutations. Moreover, the clinical pathogenicity of these variants was defined according to American College of Medical Genetics (ACMG) and genomics guidelines: 41.67% (15/36) were likely pathogenic variants, 27.78% (10/36) pathogenic variants, 30.55% (11/36) variants of uncertain significance. No etiological mutations discovered in the ZNF408, JAG1, and CTNNA1 genes in this FEVR cohort. CONCLUSIONS: We systematically screened nine FEVR disease-associated genes in a cohort of 74 Chinese probands with FEVR disease. With a detection rate of 40.54%, 36 etiological mutations of six genes were authenticated in 30 probands, including 26 novel mutations and 10 reported mutations. The most prevalent mutated gene is LRP5, followed by FZD4, TSPAN12, NDP, KIF11, and RCBTB1. In total, a de novo mutation was confirmed. Our study significantly clarified the mutation spectrum of variants bounded up to FEVR disease.

BACKGROUND: While ratoon rice has been increasingly practiced by farmers recently in China, on-farm performance in grain quality of main and ratoon crops in the mechanized rice ratooning system is less studied and remains poorly understood. Therefore, a multi-location on-farm survey was conducted to collect rice grain samples from farmers' fields to determine grain quality of main and ratoon crops of ratoon rice at 12 locations across Hubei Province, central China, in 2016. RESULTS: On average, milled and head rice percentage in the ratoon crop was 70.2% and 65.7%, which was significantly higher than in the main crop, whereas chalky grain percentage and grain chalkiness in ratoon crop (10.1% and 2.8%, respectively) were significantly lower than those in the main crop (36.6% and 14.2%, respectively). The differences in these quality traits between the two crops were consistent at all locations. Averaged across 12 locations, scores of translucency and gel consistency were significantly lower but amylose content and alkali spreading value were significantly higher in the ratoon crop than in the main crop, with the difference between the two crops varying in gel consistency by location. CONCLUSION: Overall, grain quality, especially milling and appearance of the ratoon crop, was superior to the main crop in the mechanized rice ratooning system. As a result, this study emphasizes the potential role of the rice ratooning system in other regions with a similar biophysical background producing high-quality rice. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Ratoon rice is proposed as a promising way to improve rice productivity via increasing harvest frequency. Nitrogen (N) is the most effective in promoting the development and growth of ratoon plants. However, limited information is available on how different N management practices affect the biomass production of the ratoon crop (RC) through influencing canopy light interception, radiation use efficiency (RUE), and N utilization. Field experiments were conducted in central China in 2016 and 2017 to examine the effects of N management practices on the biomass accumulation of RC and the underlying physiological mechanisms. The N rates (100 vs. 200 kg N ha-1) in the main crop (MC) had a small and inconsistent effect on the biomass accumulation of RC. N application at 15 days after heading of MC for promoting bud development (Nbud, 100 kg N ha-1) increased total biomass production of RC by 17.2-19.1%, due to the improvements in both pre- and post-heading biomass production during the ratoon season (BPratoon). N application at 1-2 days after harvesting of MC for promoting the growth of regenerated tillers (Ntiller, 100 kg N ha-1) increased total biomass production of RC by 7.8-15.9% due to the improvements in post-heading BPratoon alone or both pre- and post-heading BPratoon. The differences in BPratoon caused by Nbud and Ntiller were associated with crop growth rate, leaf area index, RUE, and N uptake of RC. Total N uptake of RC was improved by Nbud through increasing stubble N content at harvest of MC and by Ntiller through increasing plant N uptake during the ratoon season. N use efficiency for BPratoon was reduced by Ntiller but not by Nbud. These results suggest that both Nbud and Ntiller play important roles in improving biomass production in RC, although Nbud was more efficient than Ntiller.

During respiration, the expansion and contraction of the chest and abdomen are coupled with each other, presenting a complex torso movement pattern. A finite element (FE) model of chest breathing based on the HUMOS2 human body model was developed. One-dimensional muscle units with active contraction functions were incorporated into the model based on Hill's active muscle model so as to generate muscle contraction forces that can change over time. The model was validated by comparing it to the surface displacement of the chest and abdomen during respiration. Then, the mechanism of the coupled motion of the chest and abdomen was analyzed. The analyses revealed that since the abdominal wall muscles are connected to the lower edge of the rib cage through tendons, the movement of the rib cage may cause the abdominal wall muscles to be stretched in both horizontal and vertical in a supine position. The anteroposterior and the right-left diameters of the chest will increase at inspiration, while the right-left diameter of the abdomen will decrease even though the anteroposterior diameter of the abdomen increases. The external intercostal muscles at different regions had different effects on the motion of the ribs during respiration. In particular, the external intercostal muscles at the lateral region had a larger effect on pump handle movement than bucket handle movement, and the external intercostal muscles at the dorsal region had a greater influence on bucket handle movement than pump handle movement.
