BACKGROUND: Ischemic stroke (IS) is a widely recognized disease characterized by high prevalence, mortality, morbidity, disability, and recurrence rates. It ranks prominently in terms of mortality, constituting 60%-80% of stroke cases. AIM: To explore the impact of comprehensive nursing care on the quality of life and swallowing function in individuals diagnosed with IS. METHODS: This study comprised 172 patients with IS admitted to our hospital between February 2018 to March 2021. The participants were divided into two groups, namely the control group (n = 80) receiving routine care and the research group (n = 92) receiving comprehensive care. Various assessment scales, including the standard swallowing function assessment scale (SSA), National Institutes of Health Stroke scale (NIHSS), European stroke scale (ESS), self-rating anxiety scale (SAS), self-rating depression scale (SDS), Barthel index (BI), and the motor function assessment scale (MAS), were employed to evaluate the improvement in swallowing function, neurological deficits, clinical outcomes, anxiety, depression, daily living activities, and motor function before and after care. Furthermore, the study compared the occurrence of adverse reactions during the nursing period, life quality before and after the intervention, rehabilitation compliance, and nursing satisfaction between the two groups. RESULTS: After the nursing intervention, the research group exhibited significantly improved SSA and NIHSS scores compared to the control group (P < 0.05). Moreover, both groups demonstrated significant reductions in SAS and SDS scores (P < 0.05), with the research group showing more obvious advantages (P < 0.05). Compared to the control group, the research group displayed significantly better ESS, BI, and MAS scores (P < 0.05), coupled with a lower incidence of adverse reactions (P < 0.05). Additionally, the research group demonstrated markedly higher levels of life quality, rehabilitation compliance, and nursing satisfaction compared to the control group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Comprehensive nursing effectively improved swallowing function, quality of life, and patient satisfaction, highlighting its clinical significance.

Virtual reality (VR) techniques can significantly enhance motor imagery training by creating a strong illusion of action for central sensory stimulation. In this study, we establish a precedent by using surface electromyography (sEMG) of contralateral wrist movement to trigger virtual ankle movement through an improved data-driven approach with a continuous sEMG signal for fast and accurate intention recognition. Our developed VR interactive system can provide feedback training for stroke patients in the early stages, even if there is no active ankle movement. Our objectives are to evaluate: 1) the effects of VR immersion mode on body illusion, kinesthetic illusion, and motor imagery performance in stroke patients; 2) the effects of motivation and attention when utilizing wrist sEMG as a trigger signal for virtual ankle motion; 3) the acute effects on motor function in stroke patients. Through a series of well-designed experiments, we have found that, compared to the 2D condition, VR significantly increases the degree of kinesthetic illusion and body ownership of the patients, and improves their motor imagery performance and motor memory. When compared to conditions without feedback, using contralateral wrist sEMG signals as trigger signals for virtual ankle movement enhances patients' sustained attention and motivation during repetitive tasks. Furthermore, the combination of VR and feedback has an acute impact on motor function. Our exploratory study suggests that the sEMG-based immersive virtual interactive feedback provides an effective option for active rehabilitation training for severe hemiplegia patients in the early stages, with great potential for clinical application.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationships of leukemia inhibitory factor receptor (LIFR) with cervical cancer invasion and metastasis. METHODS: From January 2021 to December 2022, 45 patients treated for cervical cancer and lung metastases were identified. Western blotting was used to determine the expression of Hippo-YAP signaling pathway-related proteins. Meanwhile, 40 healthy Sprague-Dawley nude mice were used and evenly randomized into two groups, which were injected with LIFR-overexpressing (study group) or normal cervical cancer cells (control group). The lung tissue of nude mice was removed for hematoxylin-eosin staining, and the number of lung cell metastases in nude mice was counted. RESULTS: The highest LIFR mRNA expression was found in paracancerous tissue, followed by cervix cancer tissue and metastatic lesions. The study group exhibited higher LIFR, P-YAP, and P-TAZ protein expression and lower YAP and TAZ protein expression than the control group. The study group had a lower number of lung metastases than the control group. CONCLUSION: Decreased expression of LIFR and decreased phosphorylation of Hippo-YAP signaling pathway-related proteins might be the underlying mechanisms that promote lung metastasis of cervical cancer.

Brain-computer interface (BCI) technology shows potential for application to motor rehabilitation therapies that use neural plasticity to restore motor function and improve quality of life of stroke survivors. However, it is often difficult for BCI systems to provide the variety of control commands necessary for multi-task real-time control of soft robot naturally. In this study, a novel multimodal human-machine interface system (mHMI) is developed using combinations of electrooculography (EOG), electroencephalography (EEG), and electromyogram (EMG) to generate numerous control instructions. Moreover, we also explore subject acceptance of an affordable wearable soft robot to move basic hand actions during robot-assisted movement. Six healthy subjects separately perform left and right hand motor imagery, looking-left and looking-right eye movements, and different hand gestures in different modes to control a soft robot in a variety of actions. The results indicate that the number of mHMI control instructions is significantly greater than achievable with any individual mode. Furthermore, the mHMI can achieve an average classification accuracy of 93.83% with the average information transfer rate of 47.41 bits/min, which is entirely equivalent to a control speed of 17 actions per minute. The study is expected to construct a more user-friendly mHMI for real-time control of soft robot to help healthy or disabled persons perform basic hand movements in friendly and convenient way.

The WUSCHEL (WUS) gene encodes a plant-specific homeodomain-containing transcriptional regulator, which plays important roles during embryogenesis, as well as in the formation of shoot and flower meristems. Here, we isolated two homologues of Arabidopsis thaliana WUS (AtWUS), GhWUS1a_At and GhWUS1b_At, from upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum). Domain analysis suggested that the two putative GhWUS proteins contained a highly conserved DNA-binding HOX domain and a WUS-box. Expression profile analysis showed that GhWUSs were predominantly expressed during the embryoid stage. Ectopic expression of GhWUSs in Arabidopsis could induce somatic embryo and shoot formation from seedling root tips. Furthermore, in the absence of exogenous hormone, overexpression of GhWUSs in Arabidopsis could promote shoot regeneration from excised roots, and in the presence of exogenous auxin, excised roots expressing GhWUS could be induced to produce somatic embryo. In addition, expression of the chimeric GhWUS repressor in cotton callus inhibited embryogenic callus formation. Our results show that GhWUS is an important regulator of somatic embryogenesis and shoot regeneration.

Members of the NF-YB transcription factor gene family play important roles in diverse processes related to plant growth and development, such as seed development, drought tolerance, and flowering time. However, the function of NF-YB genes in cotton remains unclear. A total of 23, 24, and 50 NF-YB genes were identified in Gossypium arboreum (G. arboreum), Gossypium raimondii (G. raimondii), and G. hirsutum, respectively. A systematic phylogenetic analysis was carried out in G. arboretum, G. raimondii, G. hirsutum, Arabidopsis thaliana, cacao, rice and, sorghum, where the 150 NF-YB genes were divided into five groups (α-ε). Of these groups, α is the largest clade, and γ contains the LEC1 type NF-YB proteins. Syntenic analyses revealed that paralogues of NF-YB genes in G. hirsutum exhibited good collinearity. Owing to segmental duplication within the A sub-genome (At) and D sub-genome (Dt), there was an expanded set of NF-YB genes in G. hirsutum. Furthermore, we investigated the structures of exons, introns, and conserved motifs of NF-YB genes in upland cotton. Most of the NF-YB genes had only one exon, and the genes from the same clade exhibited a similar motif pattern. Expression data show that most NF-YB genes were expressed ubiquitously, and only a few genes were highly expressed in specific tissues, as confirmed by quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) analysis. The overexpression of GhDNF-YB22 gene, predominantly expressed in embryonic tissues, indicates that GhDNF-YB22 may affect embryogenesis in cotton. This study is the first comprehensive characterization of the GhNF-YB gene family in cotton, and showed that NF-YB genes could be divided into five clades. The duplication events that occurred over the course of evolution were the major impetus for NF-YB gene expansion in upland cotton. Collectively, this work provides insight into the evolution of NF-YB in cotton and further our knowledge of this commercially important species.

Brain plasticity, including anatomical changes and functional reorganization, is the physiological basis of functional recovery after spinal cord injury (SCI). The correlation between brain anatomical changes and functional reorganization after SCI is unclear. This study aimed to explore whether alterations of cortical structure and network function are concomitant in sensorimotor areas after incomplete SCI. Eighteen patients with incomplete SCI (mean age 40.94 ± 14.10 years old; male:female, 7:11) and 18 healthy subjects (37.33 ± 11.79 years old; male:female, 7:11) were studied by resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging. Gray matter volume (GMV) and functional connectivity were used to evaluate cortical structure and network function, respectively. There was no significant alteration of GMV in sensorimotor areas in patients with incomplete SCI compared with healthy subjects. Intra-hemispheric functional connectivity between left primary somatosensory cortex (BA1) and left primary motor cortex (BA4), and left BA1 and left somatosensory association cortex (BA5) was decreased, as well as inter-hemispheric functional connectivity between left BA1 and right BA4, left BA1 and right BA5, and left BA4 and right BA5 in patients with SCI. Functional connectivity between both BA4 areas was also decreased. The decreased functional connectivity between the left BA1 and the right BA4 positively correlated with American Spinal Injury Association sensory score in SCI patients. The results indicate that alterations of cortical anatomical structure and network functional connectivity in sensorimotor areas were non-concomitant in patients with incomplete SCI, indicating the network functional changes in sensorimotor areas may not be dependent on anatomic structure. The strength of functional connectivity within sensorimotor areas could serve as a potential imaging biomarker for assessment and prediction of sensory function in patients with incomplete SCI. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the predictive values of the leukocyte parameters for hypertensive disorders in pregnancy (HDP). METHODS: A total of 523 HDP patients and 853 normal pregnancies were included in the present study. The leukocyte parameters in different stages of pregnancy were compared among the groups, and the efficiency of clinical diagnosis was calculated to analyze the predictive value of these parameters to HDP. RESULTS: Women with HDP presented significantly higher leukocyte parameters in the second trimester and significantly lower values in the last trimester as compared to the normal gravidas. An evident increase of several parameters was observed preceding the clinical syndromes of HDP; and the odds ratio of increased neutrophil (NEU) and basophil (Baso) for predicting HDP were 1.02 and 1.16 (p < 0.01), respectively. The sensitivity of NEU was 71.95% when it was higher than 6.12 × 10(9)/L, and the specificity of Baso was 71.01% when it was higher than 0.053 × 10(9)/L for the prediction of HDP in 13-20 weeks. CONCLUSION: The NEU and Baso are helpful for predicting HDP during the presymptom period.
