RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Meningiomas are benign tumors that originate from the meningothelial arachnoid cells, but they rarely develop extracranially. There is no specific surgical guideline for resecting them in the maxillary sinus, and little is known about their biological behavior and operative management. CASE SUMMARY: We present a 54-year-old female patient referred to our department with a primary extracranial meningioma that presented as buccal swelling associated with headache. On clinical examination the mass was non-tender, fixed, sessile and non-pulsatile situating in the right maxillary sinus. Computed tomography scan showed a well-defined mass of 7 cm × 6 cm × 6 cm compressing the surrounding structures. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a well circumscribed heterogenous lesion with necrotic center and relatively hypointense on T2-weighted imaging. Imaging studies revealed no evidence of intracranial extension and metastatic nests. Biopsy showed grade I primary extracranial with low mitotic activity. Total maxillectomy with excision of tumor and adjacent paranasal structures following reconstruction of the orbit and maxilla with tissue patch was done by the maxillofacial surgeon. The biopsy reported fibrous meningioma based on the hematoxylin and eosin section. On immunohistochemistry the tumor cells were positive for vimentin, focally positive for epithelial membrane antigen and CD99 and negative for signal transducer and activator of transcription 6. The mass was removed surgically with reconstruction, and the pathological studies confirmed the diagnosis to be an extracranial meningioma. The present study briefly reviews the current knowledge concerning the diagnosis and treatment of extracranial meningiomas in the head and neck area and offers suggestions for managing extracranial meningiomas in the paranasal sinuses. CONCLUSION: To conclude, extracranial meningiomas in the paranasal sinuses may be successfully managed by surgical treatment without evident post-surgery complications.

Objective@#To understand the correlation between myopia related health belief and screen time of primary and secondary school students in Jing-an District of Shanghai, and to provide suggestions for reducing screen time and preventing myopia.@*Methods@#Using the method of cluster sampling,1 585 students from grade one to grade eight of a primary school and a junior high school in Jing-an District were selected for a questionnaire survey regarding myopia related health belief, screen time and the correlation between them.@*Results@#About 18.8%-44.4% of the students perceived themselves as myopia susceptible,which increased with grade (χ 2=33.25,P<0.01), 51.5%-78.0% of the students were aware of the adverse health impart of myopia, 39.3%-55.6% of the students were aware of unhealthy behaviors associated with myopia and 48.7%-77.5% of the students. More than 47.6% of the students daily screen time was more than 2 h/day, and daily screen time increased with grade (χ 2=12.18, P<0.01). Perceived susceptibility for myopia, awareness on adverse health impact of myopia and unhealthy behaviors associated with myopia, as well as self-efficacy associated with myopia prevention were associated with screen time of students.@*Conclusion@#The primary and middle school students in Jing an District show low lever of knowledge on myopia susceptibility and threat, but higher lever of knowledge on myopia severity and self-efficacy of preventing myopia. nearly half of the students use electronic screens too long or too close to their eyes. Awareness on myopia susceptibility, myopia-related behaviors and health impacts of myopia and self-efficacy, combined with screen time reduction might help myopia prevention.

PURPOSE: To investigate the relationship between mental health status and catecholamines level in oral squamous cell carcinoma patients. METHODS: Forty patients with oral squamous carcinoma (OSCC) who were diagnosed in West China School of Stomatology between Dec. 2011 and Aug. 2012, were assessed with symptom checklist-90 (the 5-grade scoring of 0 to 4 points was used) independently according to their actual conditions. Blood sample was taken on the second admission day and fresh tumor tissue with the weight of 0.5 g was obtained. A method was developed for determination of catecholamine and glucocorticoid in serum using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS-MS). SPSS19.0 software package was used for statistical analysis. RESULTS: Forty patients were included in the study. Compared with the scores of SCL-90 in national norms, the scores were all higher in oral squamous carcinoma patients except the interpersonal relationship. Epinephrine(E) and norepinephrine(NE) in serum was (70.27±34.50) pg/mL and (316.73±109.22) pg/mL, respectively. E and NE in tumor tissues was (6.66±3.58) pg/mg and (12.67±5.27) pg/mg respectively. As the concentrations of NE and E from circulating serum increasing, the stage and grade of oral squamous carcinoma were promoted. CONCLUSIONS: Psychiatric factors have an important impact on OSCC patients. The increased level of catecholamines is closely related to clinical stage and grade of OSCC.
