RESUMO

Waste activated sludge from a lab-scale sequencing batch reactor was used to investigate the potential relation of microbial community with lysozyme digestion process for sludge solubilization. The results showed the microbial community shifted conspicuously as sludge suffered lysozyme digestion. Soluble protein and polysaccharide kept an increasing trend in solution followed with succession of microbial community. The rise of lysozyme dosage augmented the dissimilarity among communities in various digested sludge. A negative relationship presented between community diversity and lysozyme digestion process under various lysozyme/TS from 0 to 240min (correlation coefficient R(2) exceeded 0.9). Pareto-Lorenz curves demonstrated that microbial community tended to be even with sludge disintegration process by lysozyme. Finally, with diversity (H) decrease and community distribution getting even, the SCOD/TCOD increased steadily in solution which suggested the sludge with high community diversity and uneven population distribution might have tremendous potential for improving their biodegradability by lysozyme digestion.

RESUMO

The fresh waste activated sludge (WAS) from a lab-scale sequencing batch reactor was used to determine the performance of the lysozyme for promoting its biodegradability. The results showed that a strict linear relationship presented between the degree of disintegration (DDM) of WAS and the lysozyme incubation time from 0 to 240min (R(2) was 0.992, 0.995 and 0.999 in accordance with the corresponding lysozyme/TS, respectively). Ratio of net SCOD increase augmented significantly by lysozyme digestion for evaluating the sludge biodegradability changes. Moreover, the protein dominated both in the EPS and SMP. In addition, the logarithm of SMP contents in supernatant presented an increasing trend similar with the ascending logarithmic relation with the lysozyme incubation time from 0 to 240min (R(2) was 0.960, 0.959 and 0.947, respectively). The SMP, especially the soluble protein, had an important contribution to the improvement of WAS biodegradability.

RESUMO

A novel ligand, 1-(naphthalen-2-yl)-2-(phenylsulthio)ethanone was synthesized using a new method and its two europium (Eu) (III) complexes were synthesized. The compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, coordination titration analysis, molar conductivity, infrared, thermo gravimetric analyzer-differential scanning calorimetry (TGA-DSC), (1)H NMR and UV spectra. The composition was suggested as EuL5 · (ClO4)3 · 2H2O and EuL4 · phen(ClO4)3 · 2H2O (L = C(10)H(7)COCH(2)SOC(6)H(5)). The fluorescence spectra showed that the Eu(III) displayed strong characteristic metal-centered fluorescence in the solid state. The ternary rare earth complex showed stronger fluorescence intensity than the binary rare earth complex in such material. The strongest characteristic fluorescence emission intensity of the ternary system was 1.49 times as strong as that of the binary system. The phosphorescence spectra were also discussed.

RESUMO

A novel ligand with double sulfinyl groups, bis(benzylsulfinyl)methane L, was synthesized by a new method. Its novel ternary complex, EuL2.5⋅L'·(ClO4)2⋅5H2O, has been synthesized [using L as the first ligand, and benzoic acid L' as the second ligand], and characterized by elemental analysis, molar conductivity, coordination titration analysis, FTIR, TG-DSC, (1)H NMR and UV-vis. In order to study the effect of the second ligand on the fluorescence properties of rare-earth sulfoxide complex, a novel binary complex EuL2.5·(ClO4)3·3H2O has been synthesized. Photoluminescent measurement showed that the first ligand L could efficiently transfer the energy to Eu(3+) ions in the complex. Furthermore, the detailed luminescence analyses on the rare earth complexes indicated that the ternary Eu (III) complex manifested stronger fluorescence intensities, longer lifetimes, and higher fluorescence quantum efficiencies than the binary Eu (III) materials. After introducing the second ligand L', the fluorescence emission intensities and fluorescence lifetimes of the ternary complex enhanced more obviously than the binary complex. This illustrated that the presence of both the first ligand L and the second ligand L' could sensitize fluorescence intensities of Eu (III) ions. The fluorescence spectra, fluorescence lifetime and phosphorescence spectra were also discussed. To explore the potential biological value of Eu (III) complexes, the binding interaction among Eu (III) complexes and bovine serum albumin (BSA) was studied by fluorescence spectrum. The result indicated that the reaction between Eu (III) complexes and BSA was a static quenching procedure. The binding site number, n, of 0.60 and 0.78, and binding constant, Ka, of 0.499 and 4.46 were calculated according to the double logarithm regression equation, respectively for EuL2.5⋅L'⋅(ClO4)2⋅5H2O and EuL2.5⋅(ClO4)3⋅3H2O systems.

RESUMO

The natural bentonite was purified and changed to sodium form by NaCl via exchange reaction. Their characteristics, such as swelling volume, swelling value, colloid valence, ethylene blue adsorbed and cation exchange capacity, were measured. The results indicate that the property of Na-bentonite is better than that of natural bentonite. Using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTMAB) and homopolymer of dimethyldiallyammomium chloride (PDMDAAC) as organo-intercalating reagents, two organic modified bentonites were prepared and characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and BET surface area. The XRD results showed that the CTMAB-bentonite and PDMDAAC-bentonite had typical X-ray diffraction peaks, and the d001 values increased to 1.89 and 1.45 nm, respectively. Combined with the results of FTIR, the modified reagents had been intercalated to the layer of bentonite. The BET areas, pore volumes and average pore diameters of the two organo-bentonites were decreased as compared to that of Na-bentonite.

RESUMO

A new organoclay, consisting of montmorillonite modified by a hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium (HDTMA) microemulsion, was synthesized, characterized and used as an adsorbent for the removal of o-nitrobenzoic acid from aqueous solution. Adsorption kinetics, isotherms and effects of operating variables, such as adsorbent dosage, ionic strength and initial solution pH, were also investigated. The results of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and BET surface area determination indicated that HDTMA molecules had entered into the interlayer of the montmorillonite. The optimized experimental conditions for the adsorption of o-nitrobenzoic acid by montmorillonite modified by HDTMA microemulsion were 0.5 g adsorbent dosage, 0.4 mL of 0.1 mol lbL(-1) CaCl2 solution, initial solution pH of 6.0 and contact time of 6 h. The adsorption isotherms of o-nitrobenzoic acid fitted the Langmuir model well (R2 = 0.9880). The adsorption kinetics data fitted the pseudo-second-order equation (R2 = 0.9999). These above results indicate that montmorillonite modified by an HDTMA microemulsion can be used as adsorbent for o-nitrobenzoic acid because of its high adsorption capacity and low cost.

RESUMO

Phosphorus removal is important for the control of eutrophication, and adsorption is an efficient treatment process. In this study, three modified inorganic-bentonites: hydroxy-aluminum pillared bentonite (Al-Bent), hydroxy-iron pillared bentonite (Fe-Bent), and mixed hydroxy-iron-aluminum pillared bentonite (Fe-Al-Bent), were prepared and characterized, and their phosphate adsorption capabilities were evaluated in batch experiments. The results showed a significant increase of interlayer spacing, BET surface area and total pore volume which were all beneficial to phosphate adsorption. Phosphate adsorption capacity followed the order: Al-Bent>Fe-Bent>Fe-Al-Bent. The adsorption rate of phosphate on the adsorbents fits pseudo-second-order kinetic models (R(2)=1.00, 0.99, 1.00, respectively). The Freundlich and Langmuir models both described the adsorption isotherm data well. Thermodynamic studies illustrated that the adsorption process was endothermic and spontaneous in nature. Finally, phosphate adsorption on the inorganic pillared bentonites significantly raised the pH, indicating an anion/OH(-) exchange reaction.
