RESUMO

NaGdF4:Ce,Eu,Tb nanocrystals were successfully prepared by a one-step hydrothermal method with Ce3+ ions as sensitizers, Eu3+ and Tb3+ ions as activators, and polyethylenimine (PEI) as surfactants. Color-adjustable fluorescence emission was achieved by the energy transfer effect between rare earth ions. Blue fluorescent carbon quantum dots (CDs) with a double UV response under 254 nm and 365 nm excitation were synthesized by a one-step hydrothermal method. A hydrophilic NaGdF4:Ce,Eu,Tb/CD composite ink was prepared by an easy physical mixing method. Because of the electrostatic self-assembly effect, the color adjustable luminescence was achieved in a few seconds, and the white light emission with color coordinates of (0.32, 0.32) was obtained. A dual-mode luminescence anti-counterfeiting pattern was designed and achieved by excitation with ultraviolet light at 254 nm and 365 nm.

RESUMO

Nowadays, graphene/polymer composite films with multilayer structure have attracted significant attention for gas barrier application. In this study, a series of reduced graphene oxide/polyethyleneimine (RGO/PEI) composite films were created via recast and layer-by-layer deposition processes. By using the recast process, the myriad PEI molecules in the precursor solution (the PEI : GO feeding ratio is 0.02 : 0.1, 0.05 : 0.1, 0.1 : 0.1, 0.3 : 0.1 and 0.5 : 0.1) ensure more effective reduction and surface modification of the graphene oxide (GO) sheets, while the undesirable free PEI molecules are eventually removed via a filtration process. Then, the RGO/PEI composite films were synthesized on PET substrate using a layer-by-layer assembly. The resulting films show a homogeneous and compact brick-wall structure with excellent gas barrier properties. Barriers against water vapor, nitrogen/oxygen, and carbon dioxide require different content of PEI in the composite film for optimal performance; the ideal values are 19.7, 23.8, and 24.1 wt%, respectively. These values are much lower compared with previously reported studies. Further, the permeability, free volumes, component ratio, morphology, and density of the RGO/PEI composite films have been carefully investigated and discussed. The results revealed that the mechanism behind the excellent gas barrier property of the RGO/PEI composite films is a synergistic effect created by the combination of the brick-wall structure, the small free volume holes, the suitable PEI content (ranging from 19.7 wt% to 24.1 wt%), the high density, and the hydrophobicity.

RESUMO

Tunable mesoporous silica films were prepared though a sol-gel process directed by the self-assembly of various triblock copolymers. Positron annihilation γ-ray energy spectroscopy and positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) based on intense pulsed slow positron beams as well as ellipsometric porosimetry (EP) combined with heptane adsorption were utilized to characterize the open porosity/interconnectivity and pore size distribution for the prepared films. The consistency between the open porosities was examined by the variations of orthopositronium (o-Ps) 3γ annihilation fractions and the total adsorbed volumes of heptane. The average pore sizes deduced by PALS from the longest-lived o-Ps lifetimes are in good agreement with those by EP on the basis of the Barrett-Joyner-Halenda model, as indicated by a well fitted line of slope k = 1. The results indicate that the EP combined with heptane adsorption is a useful method with high sensitivity for calibrating the mesopore size in highly interconnected mesoporous films, whereas PALS is a novel, complementary tool for characterizing both closed and open pores in them.

RESUMO

A series of MIL-101-SO3H/Nafion composite membranes was synthesized. They show an improved proton conductivity, due to the abundance of SO3H groups, which fosters proton conduction by binding the water molecules and enabling a larger number of conducting sites. Gas (including water vapor, hydrogen, and oxygen) permeability, crystallinity, and free volumes of the MIL-101-SO3H/Nafion composite membranes were investigated, as well as their correlation. By increasing the MIL-101-SO3H content, the gas permeability of the membranes significantly decreases, since the crystalline region is larger and the water-bearing MIL-101-SO3H particles are efficient barriers for the gas molecules. The gas permeation in the composite membranes is a very complex process and the results indicate no simple linear relation between the gas permeability and the free volume size (VFV), or between the gas permeability and the crystallinity. Moreover, it is very interesting to observe that the influence of VFV on the gas permeability is closely related to the size of the particular gas molecules: the larger the size of the gas molecules, the larger the free volume needed to achieve their rapid diffusion in the membrane. The results suggest the presence of a threshold value for VFV, which depends on the size of the gas molecules: when VFV is lower than this value, the gas molecules cannot easily jump through neighboring free volumes to a neighboring site, and, as a result, the permeability drops quickly.

RESUMO

In this work, mesostructured metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) of MIL-101-Crs with different specific surface areas were synthesized successfully under solvothermal conditions using cationic surfactant cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) as a structural template. It was found that crystallinity degrees, specific surface areas, and pore size distributions strongly depended on the loading of CTAB. Nitrogen adsorption and positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) results showed that the mean mesopore size increased with loading more CTAB due to the formation of larger templated mesopores. Although Langmuir adsorption of both methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO) was confirmed in MIL-101-Crs, the experimental results showed different adsorption behaviors for them depending on the dye molecular size, pore structure, and charge properties of dye molecules/MOFs in solution. The MB molecules were found to be mainly adsorbed in the interspaces between grains and the templated mesopores, whereas the MO molecules were adsorbed in the inherent pores as well as the templated ones in MOFs due to the unsaturated metal sites' electrostatic attraction on them. Remarkably, MO adsorption capacity was observed to be proportional to the specific surface area, which allowed one to get a good linear fitting of experimental data. Interestingly, the good consistence between the fitting experimental parameter, that is, the number of adsorbed MO-s per unit specific surface area, and the calculated one according to our rough estimation strongly suggests that MO-s are electrostatically attracted and rotating around the unsaturated metal sites on MOFs' inner surfaces, which exclude other MO-s to be adsorbed around due to the "hindering effect" of the rotating motion.

RESUMO

A novel multichannel carrier-suppressed return-to-zero (CSRZ) to non-return-to-zero (NRZ) format conversion scheme based on a single custom-designed fiber Bragg grating (FBG) with comb spectra is proposed. The spectral response of each channel is designed according to the algebraic difference between the CSRZ and NRZ spectra outlines. The tailored group delays are introduced to minimize the maximum refractive index modulation. Numerical results show that four-channel 200-GHz-spaced CSRZ signals at 40 Gbits/s can be converted into NRZ signals with high Q-factor and wide-range robustness. It is shown that our proposed FBG is robust to deviations of bandwidth and central wavelength detuning. Another important merit of this scheme is that the pattern effects are efficiently reduced owing to the well-designed spectra response.

RESUMO

We propose a novel carrier-suppressed return-to-zero (CSRZ) to non-return-to-zero (NRZ) conversion scheme based on a single custom-designed fiber Bragg grating (FBG) with a knife-shaped spectrum. The structure of the FBG is designed and synthesized using a discrete layer-peeling inverse scattering technique. It is shown that such an FBG can replace the combination of interferometer and the cascaded filter that is invariably employed in the reported schemes for CSRZ to NRZ format conversion. Simulation results show that conversion of 40 Gbit/s CSRZ into NRZ signals results in a Q factor that is 4.5 dB greater than the previously reported schemes.

RESUMO

We investigate return-to-zero (RZ) to non-return-to-zero (NRZ) format conversion by means of the linear time-invariant system theory. It is shown that the problem of converting random RZ stream to NRZ stream can be reduced to constructing an appropriate transfer function for the linear filter. This approach is then used to propose novel optimally-designed single fiber Bragg grating (FBG) filter scheme for RZ-OOK/DPSK/DQPSK to NRZ-OOK/DPSK/DQPSK format conversion. The spectral response of the FBG is designed according to the optical spectra of the algebraic difference between isolated NRZ and RZ pulses, and the filter order is optimized for the maximum Q-factor of the output NRZ signals. Experimental results as well as simulations show that such an optimally-designed FBG can successfully perform RZ-OOK/DPSK/DQPSK to NRZ-OOK/DPSK/DQPSK format conversion.
