Effective heat dissipation and real-time temperature monitoring are crucial for ensuring the long-term stable operation of modern, high-performance electronic products. This study proposes a silicon rubber polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-based nanocomposite with a rapid thermal response and high thermal conductivity. This nanocomposite enables both rapid heat dissipation and real-time temperature monitoring for high-performance electronic products. The reported material primarily consists of a thermally conductive layer (Al2O3/PDMS composites) and a reversible thermochromic layer (organic thermochromic material, graphene oxide, and PDMS nanocoating; OTM-GO/PDMS). The thermal conductivity of OTM-GO/Al2O3/PDMS nanocomposites reached 4.14 W m-1 K-1, reflecting an increase of 2200% relative to that of pure PDMS. When the operating temperature reached 35, 45, and 65 °C, the surface of OTM-GO/Al2O3/PDMS nanocomposites turned green, yellow, and red, respectively, and the thermal response time was only 30 s. The OTM-GO/Al2O3/PDMS nanocomposites also exhibited outstanding repeatability and maintained excellent color stability over 20 repeated applications.

Background: The regulation of target gene mRNA mediated by microRNA may play an important role in glucose metabolism in fish. Previous research findings of our research group revealed that Momordica charantia saponin (MS) administration in a high-starch diet could improve insulin resistance of common carp through renovating insulin signaling pathways, whose fundamental mechanisms have remained unknown by far. To reveal this potential mechanism, we aimed to investigate the difference in miRNA and mRNA expression profiles between common carp fed with high-starch diets containing MS (HS_MS1 and HS_MS2) and common carp fed with high-starch (HS) diets. Results: Through miRNA deep-sequencing, 10 significantly differentially expressed miRNAs in HC and HS_MS1, including one upregulated and nine downregulated miRNAs, were identified, whereas 10 significantly differentially expressed miRNAs in HC and HS_MS2, including four upregulated and six downregulated miRNAs, were identified. These miRNAs may not only be involved in the regulation of insulin signaling pathways and insulin resistance in common carp but also be the markers for liver insulin resistance in MS therapy for the remission of insulin resistance. This study identified 10 potential known miRNAs, namely, ccr-miR-10b, ccr-miR-122, ccr-miR-143, ccr-miR-146a, ccr-miR-155, ccr-miR-16c, ccr-miR-200a, ccr-miR-29a, ccr-miR-34, and ccr-miR-375, as candidates participating in modulating the liver insulin resistance. According to the biopathway enrichment analysis of the 252 target genes using the KEGG classical biopathway database, the relative expression levels of gsk3bb, pik3r1, and pik3r3b were analyzed using RNA-seq. Compared to the HC group, a significant decrease in the relative expression levels of pik3r1 and pik3r3b was observed in HS_MS1 and HS_MS2 groups (p < 0.05). This study raised a presumption of the presence of ccr-miR-29a targeting pik3r1 or ccr-miR-143 targeting pik3r3 playing likely roles in Momordica charantia saponins remitting the liver insulin resistance. Conclusion: The findings will further deepen the understanding of the carbohydrate metabolism of common carp and provide an important scientific basis for the application of Momordica saponins as functional nutrients to alleviate insulin resistance of fish in fish culture.

Working memory (WM) is a cognitive function involving emergent properties of theta oscillations and large-scale network interactions. The synchronization of WM task-related networks in the brain enhanced WM performance. However, how these networks regulate WM processing is not well known, and the alteration of the interaction among these networks may play an important role in patients with cognitive dysfunction. In this study, we used simultaneous EEG-fMRI to examine the features of theta oscillations and the functional interactions among activation/deactivation networks during the n-back WM task in patients with idiopathic generalized epilepsy (IGE). The results showed that there was more enhancement of frontal theta power along with WM load increase in IGE, and the theta power was positively correlated with the accuracy of the WM tasks. Moreover, fMRI activations/deactivations correlated with n-back tasks were estimated, and we found that the IGE group had increased and widespread activations in high-load WM tasks, including the frontoparietal activation network and task-related deactivation areas, such as the default mode network and primary visual and auditory networks. In addition, the network connectivity results demonstrated decreased counteraction between the activation network and deactivation network, and the counteraction was correlated with the higher theta power in IGE. These results indicated the important role of the interactions between activation and deactivation networks during the WM process, and the unbalance among them may indicate the pathophysiological mechanism of cognitive dysfunction in generalized epilepsy.

RESUMO

The surgical masks have been essential consumables for public in the COVID-19 pandemic. However, long-time wearing masks will make wearers feel uncomfortable and massive discarded non-biodegradable masks lead to a heavy burden on our environment. In this paper, we adopt degradable chitosan@silver (CS@Ag) core-shell fibers and plant fibers to prepare an eco-friendly mask with excellent thermal comfort, self-sterilization, and antiviral effects. The thermal network of CS@Ag core-shell fibers highly improves the in-plane thermal conductivity of masks, which is 4.45 times higher than that of commercial masks. Because of the electrical conductivity of Ag, the fabricated mask can be electrically heated to warm the wearer in a cold environment and disinfect COVID-19 facilely at room temperature. Meanwhile, the in-situ reduced silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) endow the mask with superior antibacterial properties. Therefore, this mask shows a great potential to address the urgent need for a thermally comfortable, antibacterial, antiviral, and eco-friendly mask. Wearing surgical masks remains the most effective protective measure against COVID-19 before mass vaccination, but insufficient comfortability and low antibacterial/antiviral activities accelerate the replacement frequency of surgical masks, resulting in large amounts of medical waste. To solve this problem, we report new nanofiber membrane masks with outstanding comfortability and anti-pathogen functionality prepared using fluorinated carbon nanofibers/carbon fiber (F-CNFs/CF). This was used to replace commercial polypropylene (PP) nonwovens as the core layer of face masks. The through-plane and in-plane thermal conductivity of commercial PP nonwovens were only 0.12 and 0.20 W/m K, but the F-CNFs/CF nanofiber membranes reached 0.62 and 5.23 W/m K, which represent enhancements of 380% and 2523%, respectively. The surface temperature of the PP surgical masks was 23.9 ℃ when the wearing time was 15 min, while the F-CNFs/CF nanocomposite fibrous masks reached 27.3 ℃, displaying stronger heat dissipation. Moreover, the F-CNFs/CF nanofiber membranes displayed excellent electrical conductivity and produced a high-temperature layer that killed viruses and bacteria in the masks. The surface temperature of the F-CNFs/CF nanocomposite fibrous masks reached 69.2 ℃ after being connected to a portable power source for 60 s. Their antibacterial rates were 97.9% and 98.6% against E. coli and S. aureus, respectively, after being connected to a portable power source for 30 min.

More than 110,000,000 tons of mismanaged plastics were to be produced in 2020. Polymers are favored in the preparation of thermally conductive materials due to their excellent comprehensive properties. However, most polymers fabricated for thermally conductive materials are difficult to degrade in the natural environment. To alleviate the increasingly severe environmental problems, we reported a novel eco-friendly material with high thermal conductivity, which was composited of chitosan microspheres (CSM) and hydroxyl-functionalized hexagonal boron nitride (OH-h-BN) nanoplatelets. Utilizing their significant difference in scales, the OH-h-BN nanoplatelets were arranged between each CSM. Their overall structure was similar to the honeycomb: CSM were honeycomb cores, and OH-h-BN nanoplatelets were honeycomb network. The routine-structure OH-h-BN/CS nanocomposites were only 0.94 ± 0.02 W·m-1·K-1 at 50 wt% in thermal conductivity. However, the OH-h-BN/CSM nanocomposites with honeycomb structure can reach 5.66 ± 0.32 W·m-1·K-1 in the same loading, for enhancement of 502% and 1914% than OH-h-BN/CS nanocomposites and pure CS, respectively.

Wearing surgical masks is one of the best protective measures to protect humans from viral invasion during the 2019 coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. However, wearing surgical masks for extended periods will cause uncomfortable sweltering sense to users and are easy to breed bacteria. Here, we reported a novel fibrous membrane with outstanding comfortability and antibacterial activity prepared by PP ultrafine fiber nonwovens and antibacterial functionalized h-BN nanoparticles (QAC/h-BN). The thermal conductivity of commercial PP nonwovens was only 0.13 W m-1 K-1, but that of the QAC/h-BN/PP nanocomposite fibrous membranes can reach 0.88 W m-1 K-1, an enhancement of 706.5% than commercial PP nonwovens. The surface temperature of commercial PP surgical masks was 31.8 °C when the wearing time was 60 min. In contrast, QAC/h-BN/PP surgical masks can reach 33.6 °C at the same tested time, exhibiting stronger heat dissipation than commercial PP surgical masks. Besides, the antibacterial rates of QAC/h-BN/PP nanocomposite fibrous membranes were 99.3% for E. coli and 96.1% for S. aureus, and their antibacterial mechanism was based on "contact killing" without the release of unfavorable biocides. We think that the QAC/h-BN/PP nanocomposite fibrous membranes could provide better protection to people.

Considerable efforts are being made to develop new materials and technologies for the efficient and fast removal of toxic ions in drinking water. In this work, we developed a sulfur-complexed strategy to enhance the removal capability of heavy metal ions using the polyamide nanofiltration membrane by the covalent anchoring of l-cystine and l-cysteine. The sulfur-functionalized polyamide nanofiltration membrane exhibits superior complexation of heavy metal ions and can efficiently remove them from high-concentration wastewater. As a result, the sulfur-functionalized nanofiltration membrane not only showed excellent desalination performance but also achieved a record removal rate of heavy metal ions (99.99%), which can effectively reduce Hg(ii) concentration from 10 ppm to an extremely low level of 0.18 ppb, well below the acceptable limits in drinking water (2 ppb). Moreover, the sulfur-functionalized nanofiltration membrane showed an exciting long-term stability and can be easily regenerated without significant loss of Hg(ii) removal efficiency even after six cycles. Such outstanding performances were attributed to the synthetic effect of Hg-S coordinative interaction, electrostatic repulsion, and the sieving action of nanopores. These results highlight the tremendous potential of thiol/disulfide-functionalized NF active layer as an appealing platform for removing heavy metal ions from polluted water with high performance in environmental remediation.

Wilms tumor (WT) is the most prevalent urologic malignancy in childhood. Nonetheless, the genetic factors underlying WT remain largely unknown. The miR-423 rs6505162 C>A polymorphism is associated with the susceptibility to numerous cancers; however, no investigations have been conducted on its association with WT. To evaluate the correlation between the miR-423 rs6505162 C>A polymorphism and WT risk in Chinese children, we genotyped this polymorphism using the Taqman method in 145 cases and 531 cancer-free controls. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated to estimate the strength of the association. The results showed that the rs6505162 CA genotype was associated with decreased susceptibility to WT (CA versus CC: adjusted OR=0.65, 95% CI=0.42-0.99, P=0.047). In the stratified analysis, we found that CA/AA genotypes conferred a significantly decreased overall risk of WT in children younger than 18 months (adjusted OR=0.30, 95% CI=0.14-0.63, P=0.002) and those with clinical stage I+II WT (adjusted OR=0.42, 95% CI=0.20-0.85, P=0.017) when compared with CC genotype. In summary, the miR-423 rs6505162 C>A polymorphism may negatively modify WT susceptibility in Chinese children. Our findings should be validated in larger studies involving other ethnicities.

Fibroblast growth factor receptor 4 (FGFR4) is a member of receptor tyrosine kinase family. A functional Gly388Arg (rs351855 G>A) polymorphism in FGFR4 gene causes a glycine-to-arginine change at codon 388 within the transmembrane domain of the receptor. Although the FGFR4 rs351855 G>A polymorphism has been implicated in cancer development, its association with cancer risk remains controversial. Here, we have systematically analyzed the association between the rs351855 G>A polymorphism and cancer risk by performing a meta-analysis of 27 studies consisting of 8,682 cases and 9,731 controls. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated to measure the strength of the association. The rs351855 G>A polymorphism was associated with an increased cancer risk under the recessive model (OR=1.19, 95% CI=1.01-1.41). Stratified analysis by cancer type indicated the rs351855 G>A polymorphism was associated with an increased risk of breast and prostate cancer, but a decreased risk of lung cancer. This meta-analysis demonstrates the FGFR rs351855 G>A polymorphism is associated with increased cancer risk and suggests it could potentially serve as a chemotherapeutic target or biomarker to screen high-risk individuals.

BRCA1-associated RING domain protein 1 (BARD1) is a tumor suppressor, which forms a heterodimer with BRCA1. Three BARD1 gene polymorphisms (rs7585356 G>A, rs6435862 T>G and rs3768716 A>G) were initially identified as high-risk neuroblastoma susceptibility loci by a previous GWAS. Because of the general tumor-suppressing function of BARD1, we hypothesized that these BARD1 gene polymorphisms might modify the susceptibility to nephroblastoma. We genotyped these polymorphisms in 145 cases and 531 controls using Taqman methods. Out of three polymorphisms, only the rs7585356 G>A polymorphism was significantly associated with increased susceptibility to nephroblastoma [AA vs. GG: adjusted odds ratio (OR)=1.78, 95% confidence interval (CI)=1.01-3.12]. Combined analysis of three polymorphisms indicated that subjects with 3 risk genotypes exhibited significantly elevated nephroblastoma risk, when compared with subjects with 0-2 risk genotypes (adjusted OR=1.72, 95% CI=1.02-2.89). Stratified analysis revealed that in term of clinical stage, rs7585356 AA carriers were associated with increased risk of developing clinical stage I+II nephroblastoma. The presence of three risk genotypes was significantly associated with nephroblastoma risk in females and clinical stage I+II nephroblastoma. Our results suggested that BARD1 rs7585356 G>A may be associated with nephroblastoma risk.

INTRODUCTION: Postprostatectomy incontinence significantly impairs quality of life. Although bladder neck intussusception has been reported to accelerate urinary recovery after open radical retropubic prostatectomy, its adaption to robotic surgery has not been assessed. Accordingly, we describe our technique and compare outcomes between men treated with and without bladder neck intussusception during robot-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a comparative trial of 48 men undergoing robot-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy alternating between bladder neck intussusception (n = 24) and nonintussusception (n = 24). Intussusception was completed using 3-0 polyglycolic acid horizontal mattress sutures anterior and posterior to the bladder neck. We assessed baseline characteristics and clinicopathologic outcomes. Adjusting for age, body mass index, race, and D׳Amico risk classification, we prospectively compared urinary function at 2 days, 2 weeks, 2 months, and last follow-up using the urinary domain of the Expanded Prostate Cancer Index-Short Form. RESULTS: Baseline patient characteristics and clinicopathologic outcomes were similar between treatment groups (P>0.05). Median catheter duration (8 vs. 8d, P = 0.125) and rates of major postoperative complications (4.2% vs. 4.2%, P = 1.000) did not differ. In adjusted analyses, Expanded Prostate Cancer Index-Short Form urinary scores were significantly higher for the intussusception arm at 2 weeks (65.4 vs. 46.6, P = 0.019) before converging at 2 months (69.1 vs. 68.3, P = 0.929) after catheter removal and at last follow-up (median = 7mo, 80.5 vs. 77.0; P = 0.665). CONCLUSIONS: Bladder neck intussusception during robot-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy is feasible and safe. Although the long-term effects appear limited, intussusception may improve urinary function during the early recovery period.

OBJECTIVE: To describe and illustrate the evolution of surgical technique, emphasizing technical modifications of laparoscopic donor nephrectomy (LDN) and the impact on complication outcome. METHODS: This is a retrospective observational study of prospectively collected data on all consecutive purely LDN surgeries performed at a tertiary academic medical center (n = 1325), performed between March 2000 and October 2013. RESULTS: Over time, LDN was performed on older patients, changing from a mean of 35.7 years in 2000 to 41.2 years in 2013 (P <.001). Additionally, mean blood loss decreased from 75 mL in 2000 to 21.6 mL in 2013 (P <.001). However, body mass index, operative time, and length of stay remained similar. Overall, there were 105 (7.9%) complications: Clavien grade 1 (n = 81, 6.1%) and grade 2 or higher (n = 23, 1.8%). Procedure duration, blood loss, surgeon, year of procedure, laterality, body mass index, age, and gender did not significantly predict complications. There was no significant difference for Clavien complication rates between the early learning period (first 150 cases) and the rest of the series. CONCLUSION: With continual refinement with LDN techniques based on intraoperative observations and technological advances, complication rates remain consistently low, despite increasing donor age.

BACKGROUND: Robot-assisted retroperitoneoscopic partial nephrectomy (RARPN) may be used for posterior renal masses or with prior abdominal surgery; however, there is relatively less familiarity with RARPN. OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate RARPN technique and outcomes. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A retrospective multicenter study of 227 consecutive RARPNs was performed at the Swedish Medical Center, the University of Michigan, and the University of California, Los Angeles, from 2006 to 2013. SURGICAL PROCEDURE: RARPN. OUTCOME MEASUREMENTS AND STATISTICAL ANALYSIS: We assessed positive margins and cancer recurrence. Stepwise regression was used to examine factors associated with complications, estimated blood loss (EBL), warm ischemia time (WIT), operative time (OT), and length of stay (LOS). RESULTS AND LIMITATIONS: The median age was 60 yr (interquartile range [IQR]: 52-66), and the median body mass index (BMI) was 28.2 kg/m(2) (IQR: 25.6-32.6). Median maximum tumor diameter was 2.3 cm (IQR: 1.7-3.1). Median OT and WIT were 165 min (IQR: 134-200) and 19 min (IQR: 16-24), respectively; median EBL was 75 ml (IQR: 50-150), and median LOS was 2 d (IQR: 1-3). Twenty-eight subjects (12.3%) experienced complications, three (1.3%) had urine leaks, and three (1.3%) had pseudoaneurysms that required reintervention. There was one conversion to radical nephrectomy and three transfusions. Overall, 143 clear cell carcinomas (62.6%) composed most of the histology with eight positive margins (3.5%) and two recurrences (0.9%) with a median follow-up of 2.7 yr. In adjusted analyses, intersurgeon variation was associated with complications (odds ratio [OR]: 3.66; 95% confidence interval, 1.31-10.27; p = 0.014) and WIT (parameter estimate [PE; plus or minus standard error]: 4.84 ± 2.14; p = 0.025). Higher surgeon volume was associated with shorter WIT (PE: -0.06 ± 0.02; p = 0.002). Higher BMI was associated with longer OT (PE: 2.09 ± 0.56; p < 0.001). Longer OT was associated with longer LOS (PE: 0.01 ± 0.01; p = 0.002). Finally, there was a trend for intersurgeon variation in OT (PE: 18.5 ± 10.3; p = 0.075). CONCLUSIONS: RARPN has acceptable morbidity and oncologic outcomes, despite intersurgeon variation in WIT and complications. Greater experience is associated with shorter WIT. PATIENT SUMMARY: Robot-assisted retroperitoneoscopic partial nephrectomy has acceptable morbidity and oncologic outcomes, and there is intersurgeon variation in warm ischemia time and complications.

MicroRNA-335 (miR-335) acts as a tumor suppressor or a tumor promoter in different human malignancies. However, the involvement of miR-335 in prostate cancer (PCa) is still unclear. The purpose of this study was to investigate the functional and clinical significance of miR-335 in PCa. miR-335 expression in 3 PCa cell lines (LNCaP/DU145/PC3) and in 20 clinical PCa tissues were detected by real-time quantitative reverse transcriptase-PCR compared with corresponding controls. The function of miR-335 was investigated for cell proliferation, invasion and migration in PCa cells transfected with agents containing EGFP-miR-335 expression vector. Additionally, miR-335 expression in 104 clinical PCa tissues was detected by in situ hybridization. Its assocaitions with clinicopathological features and prognosis in patients with PCa were also determined. miR-335 was significantly down-regulated in PCa cell lines than in the normal prostate cell line (P < 0.01). With the similar results in vitro, the reduced expression of miR-335 was also found in human PCa tissues comparing with paired adjacent benign prostate tissues (P < 0.05). Moreover, the increased expression of miR-335 suppressed cell proliferation, invasion and migration of PCa cell lines in vitro. Turning to its clinical significance, the low expression of miR-335 was significantly associated with high Gleason Score (P = 0.04), advanced clinical stage (P = 0.04), and positive metastasis (P = 0.02), but not with prognosis in PCa patients. Our data demonstrated for the first time the inhibitory effect of miR-335 on cell proliferation and invasion for PCa cells. The loss of this microRNA might be associated with clinical progression of PCa patients.
